You guys have been very helpful to me. I have been doing karate sense 1992, and for the longest time I have had trouble finding bunkai within the katas that would be practical in a real self defense situation. What really catch my eye with your videos was the throwing applications. A lot of what I see you guys doing are set ups that my Judo buddy has been showing me for years, in both Japanese and Russian methods, which has allowed me to contact the dots within the katas. Also I will going for my four degree black belt in Isshin Ryu this May........hopefully. My Sensei wants me to do more bunkai then I'm use too, and as I said before these videos have allowed me to reanalize things with a practical mindset. Keep up the good work, and thank you.
That's exactly why we started this channel, so glad we could help and good luck with you test! I'm sure you'll do great! thank you so much for the comment and hope to train with you one day!
This is one of my favorite videos that you guys put together. I have watched this one several times. I really am stoked about what you guys ate doing. This is one of those videos that proves Karate is still relevant. After learning the traditional techniques one is only limited by the imagination as to the application. Keep up the good work!
If our instructors would have shown like that what the purpose of the moves was, it would have helped performing the Kata's when it came to grading but the sanbons were useful too, would be good to see vids of some of them too.
This style of karate is very traditional, please make one video with all the katas and fast way and slow way , and the bunkai long video it will be the best videos of 2017 of karate for every one
Once Master Kano said to Funokushi, "teach me", then several okinawan karate graplings are applied to Judo. In return master funokushi learn alot from Judo rank system and all the mainland Japanese martial art way of style
@@y.wirasmoyo . Funakoshi wanted to do with karate, what Kano had done with jujutsu by creating judo. To make karate a method of scholastic physical fitness program gear towards sports. Mabuni was against it because he knew that eventually it would deteriorate into modern shiai karate and become a farce.
it's definitely on our radar, but we don't know how soon we can get over to the UK. We'll definitely make an announcement whenever it happens, thank you for the support, hope to meet and train with you one day!
@@santiagobohorquez1207 . It's really just karate, the way it was and was meant to be used and applied. It's a shame that karate-do became just japanese kickboxing and modern sports karate has become something else. This is the true karate, before there was any idea of styles...
Wow! 😉👍Another great intense video from you guys. I have a question.. what do you think about Bruce Lee saying that Kata has potential but shouldn't be a memorized pattern? I think that if you analyze it enough it can be a great part of martial arts!
Agree with you completely and kata is only step 1, it gets your body coordinated to drill with a partner effectively and spar effectively after that. But kata by itself is only a part of the whole
Karate Culture Thanks for the reply. 👍 I see what you're saying and I always looked at it as muscle memory and more applicable than studying names of strikes.
I recall a quote from a book by Otsuka Hironori, the founder of the Wado-ryu style: "Kata must be trained and practiced sufficiently, but one must not be 'stuck' in them. One must withdraw from the kata to produce forms with no limits, or else it becomes useless. It is important to alter the form of the trained kata without hesitation to produce countless other forms of training. Because it is a habit, it comes to life with no hesitation - by the subconscious mind.”
My only question is do we still even need kata anymore and just go straight for the application. I'm not trying to throw shade at karate but wondering if it's just for traditional sake. It might have made sense for the old masters who didn't have way to better record their moves and body mechanics, but with the way we are able to share information in today's day and age, I feel you can just cut the red tape
great question and it comes up often. Learning kata and repeating them over and over gets your body coordinated to learn the actual techniques easier. You definitely can learn them off the bat but an inexperienced person will take much longer to get the techniques correctly if they don't have a better understanding of how their body works. It's like learning to write poetry without knowing the language, you can memorize famous poems and repeat them on paper. But you lose a lot of the meaning and you wouldn't be able to memorize a lot of them. Doing kata is like learning the alphabet of that language so that you can copy any poem and eventually write your own from scratch. But doing kata alone without drilling with a partner or sparring (using the kata) afterwards is where people fail. Kata is important but it's just a piece of the whole, it's necessary to understand your body mechanics and practice efficient movement without the need of a partner, similar to shadowboxing
Shorin Ryu primarily I believe. Pretty sure they've cross trained in other disciplines too, including other Okinawan karate styles. I do Goju and recognise some of the kata they do. It's similar to this.
The style is already there, is called karate. This is the way it was meant to be applied. Sports karate is not really karate, is only something that looks like karate.
thanks, for the link to the video, it's very good, as always and I am going to try out some moves today. But I had in mind that in one video you (Michael, aka "Tsunami" ) showed and application for the "third move" of rohai: the pullback to the double hikite with closing the feed and a 90° turn, similar to the motion in matzukase. Can you remember that?! 1000 Thanks!
Don't be silly; those old Okinawans were always beaten in the ground game by Brazillians. :) Thanks, great demonstration of why "impractical" kata techniques represent very effective techniques to those who know what they mean.

we gotta crank out moar!!
Your style of Karate looks great. Thanks for posting.
thank you for the kind words! Glad you enjoy it
Great compilation!
You showed very clear that one movement can have many aplications.
Happy New Year!
From watching these vids I learned Okinawan karate 🥋 is really tegumi in a white crane form
Great analogy, we feel that way as well. Efficient combat within the clinch is the ultimate result of kata and karate training
This is amazing. Thank you for doing such brilliant and wonderful work. Thank you for "decoding" the katas and bringing back the old way 🙏🏻
Very good job !
Everything you need for self defence is in the kata and basics
Without kihon there cannot be kata, without kata there cannot be kumite.
fantastic! happy new year and I hope you guys keep making more videos. osu!
Really great job gentlemen. Was matsubyashi shorin ryu student a while ago. Seeing stuff like this makes me want to go back!
Its never too late to go back to Karate :)
Stream longer versions of your bunkia and Wawa, please!!!😯
Once again, great effort and nice video guys...👍👏
Would love to see more full kata analysis!

I can see some daido juku karaté techniques in your videos, really love your time and effort dedicated to karete culture. Osu!
Karate is karate, the differences in the styles are only the preferences of the founder.
This style of karate is very traditional, please make one video with all the katas and fast way and slow way , and the bunkai long video it will be the best videos of 2017 of karate for every one
Added to favourites. Thanks. Osu!
Sweet! Thanks! we have a few compilations-type videos on this channel so feel free to check those out as well

Awesome 🤙🏾 loving the vids
The music makes it badass XD
Osu !!! This is Excellent and Very Insightful for White belts to Black Belts with Degrees. Thank You/Osu !!!!
That Kata move at 0:27 looks so much like a Kata Guruma (fireman’s carry) to me.

Will you guy's ever be coming to the uk. I would love to come to one of your seminars.
it's definitely on our radar, but we don't know how soon we can get over to the UK. We'll definitely make an announcement whenever it happens, thank you for the support, hope to meet and train with you one day!
Can you make a detail video of kata application
hey guys! I am really liking all your videos so far. I just have a question. what style of karate do you guys practice and do in your videos?
Okinawan karate, specifically shorin ryu
Karate Culture ahh thank you. I was thinking it was a mix of goju ryu and shotokan because ive done both styles. great job btw😉

Never been, but would love to be invited for a seminar!

What style of karate is this?
Okinawa to de, specially shorin ryu
It's only the way that karate is meant to be applied. The true meaning of kata, the true bunkai! There's only one karate.
is this goju ryu?
