Karate Concept: The Nukite "Spear Hand"

  • This week we are showing applications on a movement found in traditional karate, the nukite or "spear hand." It is a very dangerous striking technique if used correctly and also a very good tool used to break through the opponent's tight guard.
    We are a group on a mission to return Karate to its roots through the use of Kata as self-defense.

    Legit karatekas incorporate grappling. Period.
    Excellent instruction.

    I like how fast yet solid you moved in the intro. Usually when I look at a match between two martial artists then they just end up punching wildly and start hugging harder than two cartoon characters in a movie. But you moved even faster than them but still not random spontaneous movements and actually fluid moves

    Your interpretation of nukite is called tuite or "palace hands". The nukite is actually designed for striking after conditioning for many years. One of my sensei, and I watched him do this, used a nukite to go through a watermelon. Once the hand(s) are conditioned it IS made for striking. I do appreciate and enjoy what you are doing as I do the same with waza out of our kata. Thank you for your demonstration.

      +Zayd Shakur Thanks! Our sensei definitely showed us a new way of thinking and we hope to share that with everyone else! Grappling awareness is a necessity for any martial arts, thanks again!

      Traditional Okinawan styles of karate contain a lot of grappling. A lot of it is applied durring the blocking techniques where the practitioner grabs the arm or leg of the attacker during the block to control their flow of motion or move them off balance. The horse stance is a great way to take someone's leg out from underneath them when the front knee is directed at their inner thigh as the knee of the attacker can be pushed out while the ankle is grabbed and pulled in. You have to be careful with this technique though because it can easily tear the connective tissue in the knee area or seriously damage the joint.

    Interesting concepts, but do you guys totally discount the spear hand as a striking technique?
    I mean the Chinese and Okinawans had tons of impact conditioning training methods for the fingers, so they must have been planing on hitting an opponent with the fingertips eventually, right?

    • @karateculture
      @karateculture  9 років тому +11

      +Anaerobixx We totally agree with you and we definitely do not discount it as as striking technique. The quick highlight segment at the beginning of our video shows strikes with the fingertips and we also have tools to help strengthen our fingertips for striking. This video was more of a discussion to bring up less apparent applications of the nukite since the majority of martial artists have been exposed to the spear hand as a striking technique. Thanks for the comment, we appreciate the question

    This makes perfect sense. Cupping of fingers to strike as an improvised grab was totally new to me. Thank you for sharing guys

    I enjoyed the info and variations of the technique shown. I'm a practitioner of Uechi-ryu and the technique is used slightly different in our style. This is one of the differences between Uechi-ryu and Goju-ryu. Both the sanchin strike and the nukite strike in our style are trained to be penetrating techniques that are regularly used around the ribs and armpit area (there is a deep pressure point in the armpit that can disable the arm) and the penetration is usually used in the rib area between the ribs themself to cause severe damage to the connective tissue between the bone. Good to see different perspectives on this technique and I believe that students of all styles can add a lot to the practitioners of others by giving them something different to look at than what they were trained. Keep up with the videos, I feel this channel is offering a lot to the martial arts community and especially the karate community as a lot of traditional martial artists can get into the habit of only looking at the techniques that they practice through the "tradition" that they have been taught and there are always innumerable ways to apply any technique depending on what is going on. The cranes beak technique that you showed is great for attacking the area between the collar bone and neck and is regularly used for groin attacks as these techniques have great penetrating power. The straight finger nukite is also regularly misunderstood due to the fact that the fingers are supposed to be slightly angled towards the palm and never locked out. Looking forward to seeing more stuff.

    Loving these videos, I knew there was more to Nukite, I was just obsessed with striking at the hips and pushing down for a while (pinan nidan). I have one complaint though, really simple and it's that when you do the comparison between kata and live, it's like trying to read subtitles in an action movie. I'm not catching everything and I'm constantly rewinding to see what you did. Other than that, amazing videos guys. I am applying what you're teaching to my martial arts.

      Thanks for the suggestion! Our more recent videos use the format you suggested, it's hard trying to make sure the viewers don't lose their attention when a video is too long. But you're right, it's better to be able to see and process the applications for those who are spending the time to watch, thanks!

    Is the spear hand safe to use during sparring for your opponent? Does doing finger push up helps to better the spear hand? Thanks.

    • @karateculture
      @karateculture  6 років тому +1

      Theres ways to use it but I wouldn't make a habit out of trying to use it for strikes during sparring. We tend to use it more to help slip our arms past an opponent versus striking. Finger push ups could help but you would want to train your grip as well as your wrists.

    I like that you didn't grab the gi for the throw. I wonder if you can tell if martial artists are from the South because of this. Basically because you'd just be ripping off a guy's t-shirt. :-)

    I think that you guys should maybe trademark this idea because having been a martial artist since I was five years old and now 43, I know for a fact that is NOT for what is spearhead was meant aside from striking part which was briefly discussed in the beginning. It is a good concept however otherwise all those years of training in arts like traditional karate which has tons of spear hand strikes will seem totally useless.
