How can fossil fuels be “moral" when activists tell us, “keep it in the ground?"
Because:
“3 billion people …. still use less electricity than a typical American refrigerator” says Epstein. To allow them to have a modern life, “that's going to depend on fossil fuels.”
But what about pollution and climate change?
I push back throughout this extended interview.
If gas were $12/gallon, we wouldn't all be driving electric cars. We'd all be poor.
Maybe that is the goal. Leftist have been great in making the poor poorer.
And EV's would be even more unaffordable because you're not shipping things across oceans on battery power and that doesn't even account for the amount of petroleum-based materials it takes to build an EV.

The amount of abundant, useable kinetic energy, employed in driving the machines of civilization, is directly proportional to the wealth and standard of living of that civilization. Western Civilization

Perhaps one of the unspoken reasons that governments want to get rid of fossil fuel is the freedom and self-reliance that fossil fuel gives so many ordinary people.
In some ways, yes, but if you have a car that is charged with electricity that you get mainly from solar panels on your own roof, you cut the government out of the fuel entirely. It depends on how far you need to go. I'm for removing as much government influence from everyone's life as possible. All options should be available, and the market should decide.

Fossil fuels are a mess of taxes and subsidies combined with the US military backing up threats to other countries to keep the price stable. 1st off they're not "fossil fuels " no one with a brain cell believes that nonsense. It's a renewable resource that's continuously created. I graduated from college in 73 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. In 74, after witnessing the USA's dependence on other countries and their political whims, I asked myself what could I do to help the USA. I spent the next 41 years of my career as a Petroleum Engineer. Reliance on 'renewable' energy sources is a dream. People are concerned about the environment, and in seeking alternate energy sources they are 'driving off a cliff'.
The rampant stupidity in this Country is unbelievable. Just like everything the Democrats do, their so called solutions will only make things worse and will harm the planet, the economy, and the majority of Americans.
The funny thing is that they're going to destroy the environment which will impact the climate if these "alternative sources" are allowed to go unchecked. Each type of energy they suggest has a much more direct impact on the environment, but they only measure it by the carbon footprint which is how they're able to claim these are "clean" energy sources.
its not that we are driving off a cliff , but rather it should be noted. That we should use less of it and let it be a booster and use it for making innovation to reduce impact of petroleum product getting into places where it shouldnt.
Thank you Mr. Mooney for your work and statements. No one should be climate obsessed when they can't do simple math. It takes 54 metric tons of earth to be moved , hauled and processed to make a one ton lithium battery. No wind turbine, solar panel or battery has a shelf life of greater than twenty years at the extreme end and ten years for most of these products. The combustion engine in my car is more than 22 years old and can easily take on another 100,000 miles. For the climate warrior, where will you dump the mega tons of toxic waste that will be used panels, turbines and batteries? Mining will have to be accelerated more than 1,000% to reach these ridiculous climate goals, yet the environmentalists prohibit mining. They are destroying our economy for a fairy tale.

Why doesn't this guy tell you that the new solar panels are 40% more efficient, clean,cheaper and will be suppressed like everything is now that makes people energy independent or new batteries that not lithium, cobalt and way more efficient, cheaper, cleaner or solar paint or running your car on water with on demand hydrogen, all exist and work and have been suppressed. Long form interviews where the people are actually allowed to talk and hash out their ideas are SO much better than traditional interviews.
There was a time when I wanted solar and wind power to live up to the claims made for them, but then I realized that WANTING to believe anything obscures and endangers beliefs that are based upon observation, data and proof. When people WANT to believe something, they will become fixated upon accepting lies, deceit and falsehoods if it aligns with their beliefs.
This. Yeah solar should have been the future 25 years ago but never achieved high output. Good for night lights and remote communication devices and that's about it.

It is a scientific fact, all things being equal, combustion engines are more powerful and efficient than electric motors. Thus the reason cars, tools, utilities and other mass energies initially were and are run on combustion engines. There is nothing new under the sun... even the sun itself. Solar, wind, geothermal are not meant for global energy supply. Even for small applications when considering the costs of raw material components of batteries, solar panels and other technologies it is untenable in the environmental, financial, social, etc. sense.
Don't be fooled climate change is a farce for gaining control of the population. WAKE UP PEOPLE!
@@Richardofdanbury Let's not forget incandescent bulbs in this climate nonsense. LED is fine for some things but there are still many uses for incandescents that LED can't touch. One 60 watt incandescent bulb in a small greenhouse or well house can keep things from freezing up for several degrees below 32.. no LED can do that. Put fluorescent bulbs in the mix and being that they run on cycles.. spinning power tools are dangerous with those.
Use incandescent bulbs in the house in winter and the furnace doesn't get turned on as soon as with LEDs.

As a utility worker for decades, it is clear that most people don’t understand the energy business, and they don’t realize how important low cost electricity and gasoline are to the economy.
Since about the 1980’s, the public have been propagandized to think free bubble up and rainbow stew are their “right”, and are just around the corner. 🙄
They have no idea how much thoughtful planning and hard work have gone into the electricity and gasoline distribution systems, upon which we all now rely.

There is no valid reason to get rid of fossil fuels ------ "renewable energy" is too expensive and unreliable. Most importantly, there is no climate emergency.
Exactly. He makes good points about the wishful thinking of some on the pro wind and solar side, but it feels some of his own counterpoints are just cherry picked examples. I dont know if that's true and still have a lot more researching to do in this area, but I don't believe the truth is as black OR white! so looking forward to a debunk video!

So my ev is at least 2y out. ( I bought 1 car new and that 993 is sitting save and sound 8k miles away in a garage - I really have to get that thing)
... ev, new batterystorage, solar and wind are perfect for certain applications. There will be a place for ice and oil for a long time.
I run my ac on solar ( Florida) 3/4 of my electric bill.
I would consider it ideal if we could export 50% of our gas and oil and use the other 1/2 for gasoline, fertilizer, plastic etc.
Burning petroleum products is a complete waste of a extremely versatile recours.

I spent 26 years in the coal industry. Initially out of school I also looked askance at fossil fuels having been indoctrinated in the liberal mindset. After studying and learning the coal industry I quickly became aware that the basis of civilization was contingent on fossil fuel.
It is refreshing to see a young man like Alex who can see through the fog of liberalism to the unrealistic goals of the left leaning Climate Globalists.

I was in elementary school in the 70's we were told we were heading towards the next ice age...we were going to float away in the 80's due to the hole in the ozone...acid rain was going to burn us all up....can't count the number of times we were going to run out of food and water causing us to all die...oh and growing up during the height of the arms race we were all going to die in a nuclear winter if someone got an itchy finger....
My son learned in elementary school that global warming would destroy the world while my daughter was taught in elementary school that both global cooling and global warming was wrong it was now climate change...made very interesting conversations over the years

One addition I would make is that there is now a credible debate that fossil fuels may be keeping our CO2 levels above the dangerously low threshold, we are very close to now. Read that again if you have to… We’re at the lowest CO2 level we’ve been in several hundred million years. A bunch of people I looked at that and start producing reports. Grid-wise you’re absolutely right and advancements in fission and fusion will help immensely but just like with fossil fuels, there needs to be more education and counter-propaganda
My brother wanted to move to California either this year or within the next 5 years. I informed him that he either needed to do it now or not at all. If he moved out there, he would be getting 2 gasoline cars and a house. I informed him that although I strongly encourage him not to (and he wisely chose not to), he'd have to do it now. Reason is because California is banning fossil fuel cars and mandating solar panels on houses. I informed him that he might not be able to get a non EV or he might have to put solar panels on any house he purchases. Its stunts like that that sometimes make me regret living in the US. Sometimes I think that the left wing environmentalists in government care more about the environment and "looking good for reelection" than they do about taking care of their people.

@@stuarthirsch Now, as the grandson of the man who invented PVC pipe and basically revolutionized modern plumbing (I know that's a hollow claim) , there is something to be said about a lot of unnecessary plastic in things like packaging, food, toy's ext. not to mention its toxicity to the human endocrine system. You should check out the study done on the life span of cement, and how access plastics in the environment have damaged long term structural integrity of modern construction. Obviously banning plastics outright is pure insanity, but a more responsible approach to its production, use and disposal should be readdressed.

Fossil fuels have not only lifted people from poverty and increased life expectancy, it has redefined the worldwide definition of poverty and has drastically increased the world's life expectancy. Even people who are not entirely reliant on fossil fuels reap the benefits. Widespread famines are brought to an end thanks to commercial transportation, fertilizer, and farm equipment. All powered or made from fossil fuels.

The best case nuclear project maybe ever cost $4.5 billion for 1GW

The largest solar park on the planet is the Bhadla Solar Park in India, which has a capacity of about 2245 MW - and that's not even accounting for the fact that solar panels are only operating at maximum output about 24% of the year
Compare that to the average nuclear reactor which outputs around 1GW and operates at maximum output about 92% of the year and it isn't even close
As to the cost, the construction cost of Bhadla is definitely a fraction of the cost of one nuclear plant - but that's just the construction cost; the maintenance and logistics costs for solar park construction are wildly higher and result in far more deaths per kilowatt hour than that of the horribly propagandized deaths per kilowatt hour for nuclear plants
You wanna talk about saving the planet - Bhadla takes up 22 square miles to produce a fraction of the energy that the average nuclear reactor taking up ONE square mile produces

Eventually a sensible transition to renewables can happen, but the answer to making that happen is decades of nuclear energy. These plants take time to build. We should be building lots of nuclear power plants now.

I was trained in the Naval Nuclear Power Program to operate nuclear reactors for two years and spent four years operating one on a US fast attack submarine. Three Mile Island ended my planned career path in nuclear power electric generation. I then spent 31 years in fossil fuel electrical power generation. We have four options. One is to go back to pre-1860 and burn oil from whale blubber for lighting and wood for heat and cooking. The second is to go to pre-1700 and use wood and coal as a fuel. The third is to start building nuclear power plants again. Fourth is to continue using fossil fuels.
The belief that wind turbines, solar panels and batteries is going to power the world is a myth. So there is definitely a moral case for fossil fuels.

Epstein is also a blogger at Master Resource, an organization that has received funding from the Koch Foundations (involved in crude oil supply and refining, wholesale marketing of fuel oil, base oils, gasoline, asphalt and other oil based products), amounting to $100,000 between 2005 and 2011.
This is a blatant lie, he receives ZERO funding from anyone. He doesn't need it, he has two NY times best-selling books and gets paid very nicely for his speaking engagements.

@@MorphingReality Like what exactly? I have found at least one paper (from the IEA) that claimed solar and wind were close to competitive in 2007, and that was an absolute lie. They're not even competitive now without government subsidies, even with all the advances that have been made. Don't get me wrong, I believe that a replacement(s) will be feasible, in the future. However, the supposed replacements that are just a few years off(which is mostly just salesmanship from researchers, and other invested parties). This includes renewables, hydroelectric, biofuels, hydrogen, fusion(fission is absolutely viable for a significant chunk, but even then there are some hurdles due to needing the infrastructure). These in combination may work out in the future, but for the last few decades [sic] they've just been selling a dream. The economics of that could change though, especially if governments continue to strongarm it. I am also just an internet retard, so take it all with a grain (or ~64.8mg) of salt.

I've been saying since the '80s, if we cut out the CO2 what will the trees breathe? I also remember when the "new ice age" was predicted in the '70s which freaked people out - and rightly so. Look at human history, we decline when it's cold and flourish when it's hot.
In the 70s most Climatologists were predicting warming. Peterson - The myth of the 70s cooling consensus - Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. CO2 levels have gone 280 ppm to 418 ppm in the Industrial Era due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions. There’s no shortage of CO2.
From about 1940 to 1970, temperatures were falling before rising again. We are in an interglacial period that will end, and into the deep freeze we go. Human induced warming (absolutely real) is delaying the inevitable.

Look up the history of the name fossil fuels, there's an excellent old interview about it. The marketing term fossil fuel is designed to think that there's some limited availability to this overly abundant resource.
A quick Google search had me fact-checked by Reuters. They say it's untrue that Rockefeller coin this term. So now we know for a fact that this is the real story LOL, if the mainstream media says it's not true, we all know what it is.

Right. I have long since realized there is a case for naturally occuring oil. I need to revisit that, I think. If one believes that decayed plants and animals are the source of oil, then they accept that oil is a finite resource. This is how the popular usage of the term "fossil fuel" has come about.

The Earth is a ball that has a fire in the middle of it, so that fire is probably creating the oil. The core of the Earth in the magma and all of that, that's most likely what creates oil. The idea that oil comes from the top down seems implausible when you think of the fact that the Earth is a ball of fire.

china´s coal plants were mentioned many times. but china is also the world leader in wind and solar energy production, they aim to generate a third of their energy from renewable sources by 2025. china produces almost 2x total amount energy than usa, and still, 24% of their power comes from renewables.
he says cant work on cold, but 7th biggest renewable producer is russia. and its colder in russia than texas. how does he explain that? texas guys could've made it winter proof, but they chose to skimp out. norway has cold winters, too, and their renewables is 97.2%.

In Ontario Canada, the government forced a very expensive transition to windpower. The result was very expensive electricity. And that led to energy intensive manufacturers (high paying jobs) to RUN to the US, and shut down operations in Ontario.

I live in a northern city where we experience several days each winter with temperatures of -30. Decades ago, it used to be several days of -40. Now -40 is extremely rare. Summer and daytime temperatures are about the same as ever. I call that climate improvement.

The battle to slow energy use was lost when national governments failed to slow population growth in the 80's.
I'm seventy three years old, so I was a kid in the fifties. Just about every night, there were news casts of children with distended stomachs who were starving to death. The prediction was overpopulation was going to cause mass starvation around the world. It didn't happen, and the reason is modern farming techniques and fossil fuels. Third-world nations now have tractors and farm equipment run by diesel and gas. The yields from farming have gone up to where people have enough to eat. Do away with fossil fuels, and the news casts with starving children will be back on the evening news.
When the Texas grid went down two winters ago, it took Whole Foods' cash registers with it. Whole Foods was incapable of processing payments, other than in cash, for nearly a week because the servers those registers were using for that data processing are based in Austin, TX.
A similar situation happened here in Toronto, Canada last year. Most major stores have their telecommunications with one provider. The main plant had a power outage that brought down the entire network, therefore no POS systems worked, enabling stores to only allow cash transactions. Since 90% of customers only use debit or credit, they were stuck paying for purchases, and ATMs were unavailable since they were handled by the same telecommunications company.

@@HealthyDisrespectforAuthority Ha! True. Unfortunately, I'm a dyscalculic, myself. Has nothing to do with learning math, but rather, is related to dyslexia. In fact, dyscalucia is sometimes referred to as "dyslexia with numbers." I'm a "high-functioning" dyscalculic, meaning I can do some basic arithmetic in my head, but it's very limited, very slow and prone to error, hence my use of calculators. But, with that tool and the measurement tools in Autocad, I successfully pulled off a 31 year career as an architectural/engineering draftsman/CAD tech. There are dyscalculics who are unable to read or recognize numerals, have no ability to read a clock and have no sense of direction. I had a little difficulty learning to tell time, as a child, but I overcame most of that. Dyscalculia wasn't even named yet when I was a boy in the fifties and sixties. In fact, the term "learning disorder" didn't exist, either. I didn't discover I had the disorder until I was 43. It wasn't until I was 56 that scientists isolated the cause to a congenital defect in the left parietal lobe of the brain, which occurs in-utero. Many people who have never experienced dyscalculia believe it can be overcome by learning, but this isn't true. A dyscaluic has no facility for math because of an impairment in the brain, not laziness or simple ignorance. Whatever normal people "see" or experience in their mind when they do math, I don't have that. It's simply not there for me, and never has been.

Believe me, I wish I had possessed the same facility for math that my civil engineer father had. I could have followed in his footsteps, or maybe become an architect. Instead, I wound up with a degree in graphic design and, with that and about $6, I can get a latte at any Starbucks.

@@RussellNelson My take on Stossel's interview technique is that he throws out standard talking points and lets the interviewee counter them. Otherwise you only hear one side of very complex but very hyped subjects.
I remember when my son was very little and he asked me what biofuel is. I told him it’s where we take our food and turn it into a fuel we can burn in our cars. He said but isn’t it stupid to burn our food… from the mouths of babes…
Al gore in his Oscar winning documentary said the Arctic would be gone by 2013 and polar bears would be extinct. Polar bears are thriving right now and not even on endangered list. Media was also fearmongering about 10 years ago, citing "experts" that were predicting Florida would be underwater in 7 years. Australia even warned in 1999, that in 20 years, there would be no more snow. They just had historic record snowfall. Climate has always been changing. That's why ice age is cyclical and Sahara desert was lush 10,000 years ago.
