The Academic Karelia Society (Akateeminen Karjala-Seura, AKS) was a Finnish nationalist and Finno-Ugric activist organization aiming at the growth and improvement of newly independent Finland, founded by academics and students of the University of Finland in 1922.
    Lyrics:
    Finnish
    1. Tää kansamme kauan on kamppaillut,
    Se seissut on ryssiä vastaan.
    Se ei ole orjaksi antautunut,
    Ei luopunut kalleimmastaan.
    Se ei ole tahrannut kunniataan,
    Vaan takaisin Suomellensa,
    Se viha ja rakkaus rinnassaan
    On vaatinut vapautensa.
    2. Ne voittomme lunnaat jos kalliit lie,
    Niin sittenkin kesken on työmme,
Ja kyynelin käyty jos onkin se tie,
    Niin kerran me vieläkin lyömme.
Niin kauan on iskevä Suomen mies
    Ja uhma sen kalvassa kestää,
Kuin katkee ne kahleet kuin kirpoo se ies,
    Mi heimomme herruutta estää.
    3. Me kuulemme Karjalan kanteleen
    Viel’ itkevän vangitun kieltä.
    Käy veitsenä veljein se sydämeen
    Ja Kullervon nostaa se mieltä.
    Me nousemme voimalla kirkastamaan
    Tään kansamme kauneinta unta,
    Ja kerran myös juhliva vapauttaan
    Suur-Suomen on valtakunta.
    4. Me tahdomme suureksi Suomenmaan,
    Me voitamme vastustajan.
    Ja Vienanlahdesta Laatokkaan
    Me piirrämme miekalla rajan.
    Se meidän on veljinä velvollisuus,
    Tää veikot on tunnus-sana:
    Suur-Suomelle aamu on koittava uus’
    Viel’ untakin kirkkaampana.
    English
    1. Our people have fought long,
    Stood against Russians,
    Haven't surrendered as slaves
    And abandoned their most precious,
    Haven't soiled their honour
    But back to their Finland
With wrath and love in their heart
    Have demanded their freedom.
    2. Though the ransom for our victory might have been costly
Our task hasn't been finished yet
And even if our path would be tearful
    We still keep on striking.
As long the Finnish man keep on striking
As the defiance lasts in his sword
Until the shackles were broken and yoke thrown away,
Which prevents the supremacy of our tribe.
    3. We hear the Karelian zither
Still weeping the language of oppressed
It strikes our hearts as a knife
    Still raises Kullervos spirit
We shall rise with vigor to embrighten
    Our people's most beautiful dream
Once again shall celebrate it's liberty,
    The realm of Greater Finland!
    4. We want to make Finland Great
    And overcome our adversary
And from the White Sea to Lake Ladoga
With our sword we draw a border.
    That's our duty as brothers
And hearken brothers this is our creed:
"To Greater Finland the new dawn will come
    Even brighter than the dream".

The fact that in the span of a few months this video has gained 3 000 views is a delightful thing to see. It's reassuring to know that there are still ones, who hear the Karelian kantele!

As long as Karelia is under the Russian yoke, how could the Finns ever forget it?

AKS was a great organization. One of the reasons I like them is that they helped the Estonian Vaps movement and Artur Sirk who was our greatest hero and could have saved Estonia unlike Päts who took Estonia into complete doom in 1939. Respect from Estonia.

The contributions of the Estonian volunteer forces during our wars are also not forgotten. We cherish the memory of Estonian bravery still to this day, and we're glad to lend a hand any day should the need ever arise again. Only a sea divides our tribes, brothers to the end.

Not everyone appreciates our brand of nationalism and irredentism, unfortunately, despite standing valiantly on the side of western civilization and against the yoke of the east. At least Estonians remember this favourably, it seems, the rest of Europe has internalized the Soviet Russian anti-fascist creed.
The closer to Russia one is located the less likely he is to think positively of Russian rule.

For people who don't know. AKS was a Finnish nationalist movement which did 'crusades' to Karelia in the 1920's to reclaim lost territory and make a Great-Finland empire. Most of the people in this movement were nationalist high school graduates. The white hats that everyone is wearing means, that person has graduated high school. The movement was later abolished in the Tarto treaty. This was a huge shame for the movement and the founder even k1lled himself as a martyr for this movement after the abolishment.

    • @TheFinski
      @TheFinski 6 місяців тому +10

Calling the heimoaate imperialistic paints a twisted picture. The goal of the ideology was to unite East-Karelia with the rest of the Finnish people, under the republic of Finland. Imperialism is more about asserting domination for political gain.

It was abolished in the Moscow armistice of 1944, not the Tartu peace treaty which defined the border between Russia and Finland before the second world war.

    • @herptek
      @herptek 3 місяці тому +5

You forget quite a bit of history if you think peace of Tarto ended AKS. That was but the beginning. The mentality in AKS was that this was a peace of shame because it meant eastern Karelia was left to Russia. The East-Karelians themselves rebelled against the bolshevic tyranny, but after the peace Finland could not officially help the kindred nation without breaking peace. AKS did not rest on its laurels, however, but organized and gained quite an influence inside Finnish cultural, political and military elite. AKS would have their final vengeance against the Russians in 1941.
