I've been using it for years on my a7iii, and it's one of my favourite lenses. Remember it is designed as a full frame lense. Paired with a a7 series camera it gives you such a nice and compact package. Perfect for street photography. And for the price you got it at, I would even buy it as a body cap.

Does it have phase detection autofocus across the entire sensor? I have a sigma 30mm 2.8 and you only get PD in the centre of the screen

I love this lens. Good performer, light, small enough, silent autofocus, and makes a great daily driver.
Using it on my Song A7. Perfect for full frame!

Additional points about this excellent lens:
    1. It's a 35mm FE lens, so you can use it on full frame Sony's without having to shoot in crop mode.
    2. When used on an APS-C camera, the field of view is equivalent to that of a 52mm full-frame.
    3. At 3 ounces, with no distortion, it is perfect for creating stitch panos in the backcountry.
    4. It's also a useful focal length for filming.

I'd love to see more lenses like this: not ultra-fast like a 1.4, but fast enough at 2.8, and using that smaller aperture to just shrink and lighten the lens. Compactness is a virtue.

I love how you use older cameras and still make content for Sony APSC. I got the A6400 after watching some of these videos. I’m still trying to find a good video lens and nature outdoor photography lens. But prices are kill me.

If you don't mind messing with manual focus and aperture, I highly suggest an old vintage lens. M42 lenses adapt easily to Sony bodies. My current favorite lens cost me $34 including the adapter.

If you want a good all around lens, you can check out the Sony 18-105 F4 OSS. Its an awesome all around lens. But if you want the sharpest possible lens you can go for the Sigma 16/30/56mm lenses. All three of them are F1.4 and super sharp. I own both the Sony and Sigma 16mm and recommend them highly. I use a A6600

Full frame 35mm and 50mm lenses are in focal length area where the optical problems aren't as serious as with ultra wide or super telephoto lenses. So they can be made relatively small, light with good optical performance and above all with low cost.

And just to add to who samyang is, the lenses are the same as the rokinon with different branding. They are made in the same factory. I recently moved from the A6000 to the A7r III.I sold off all my lenses and it was harder to part with my Samyang 12mm than any other lens (including the two Sigma's I sold)

I’m definitely considering this lens to have with my Sony 85mm F1.8. Would be an excellent duo to cover most of my bases. The use of aspherical elements to minimize distortion is what’s selling me on this.

@@trym2121 I've had the samyang out in weather and barely had any issues, though I suppose the 4x price point to avoid having a spot on your sensor in the middle of the day makes sense if money isn't an option

I have had the 35, 24 and 18 2.8 lenses from launch. They're the best bang for the buck for full frame and pair especially well with the A7 and A7S models. A bit of a stretch to the full 42mp of the Rii but if you export and scale down to 30mp or less they're very good. I have the Sony 35mm 1.8 FE for pro work and it's only really the brighter stop, sealing and closer focus that makes it worth the extra spend. The pancake nature of the 35 and 24 Samyangs mean you can usually pocket your camera if the weather turns nasty.

I own this Lens since late 2017, so some years. Bought it with Firmware v2, now current is v6. Many cheapskates don't invest 50 bucks into the Samyang USB Dock, which could update all Samyang AF Lenses - so quite a good investment. As for the 35mm F2.8 FE AF Sammy here - one can get this 2nd hand mint now for around 120 bucks, which is a steal ! i paid almost 400 bucks into late 2017, and it was totally worth every cent.

I got the very similar samyang f2.8 24mm, also use it with the old a7. I think the mark I is a wonderful combo for lightweight, 100g less for the body. Image quality is similar to what you describe. Flare - due to the low performance of the old body it becomes visible how this is straightened out in body. With a very pleasing result. Focus noise is totally acceptable for stills. For video I would try to avoid focussing during the shot. The focus noise persists in manual focus mode. Maybe that's just variations of the lens being noisier or quieter.

I just got this lens and it makes a click noise when in single shot auto focus, it’s not actually the focusing motor making the noise though. When I focus, I can see the aperture ring making the noise as it opens fully and then closes back down to the selected aperture. It doesn’t make the noise at f2.8 (because it is already wide open so the ring doesn’t move) but it makes the noise at all of the other apertures.
    Is the noise normal?

I've heard this one is soft but seems your copy is quite decent. I got 24mm F2.8 and I'm really happy both for photos and videos. It's small compact and full frame!. But there is an opinion these sony E Samyangs tend to get softer over time. Mine still sharp, but you can see stories of degradation on serious YT channels. You can also see, that its performance in low light is terrible, but no surprise there it's F2.8.

I've used it on A7Riii for a while and while not bad, there is nothing special about this. The best things are size, weight and price. I then used the Sony 35/2.8 briefly on A7iii. It did appear to have more pop and better colours though price-wise it is way more.

One of its weak points is full frame corner performance, the sharpness just degrades outside APS-C area. Something like A7RIV makes it glaringly obvious, even stopping it to f/8 does not bring full frame corners up to APS-C corners performance =(.

    • @Cfyzium

@@Athiril In a sense I already had. I have Sony 35 f/1.8 and it seems (based on Christopher Frost comparison) the new Samyang 35 f/1.8 is even slightly better in pure optical quality, only lagging behind a bit in build quality. Those two lenses are already good wide open and nothing short of awesome stopped to f/2.8. However, they are not quite in pancake territory =(. Honestly, I'd gladly pay a similar amount, maybe a bit of a premium even, for a slower f/2.8 pancake with comparable optical characteristics. Alas there is only Sony Zeiss 35 f/2.8 for $700, which really is not much better than Samyang 35 f/2.8.

I don't know how any of you can even stand to think about a lens that works for both FF and APS-C. It's like I'm stuck in the middle of a math problem and I can't solve for x until I decide whether or not I care about y. I mean, it's kinda wide on FF and it's the narrow side of average on APS-C. I can't shop for both those things at the same time! Does it think it's competing with APS-C lenses? That would be difficult. I paid $239 for the Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 and about $400 for the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and that feels like an amazing value. I'd be much more excited about getting the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for $300 than this. If I'm using a FF camera isn't that because I've decided I don't really care that much about convenient lightweight lenses? Oh, wait a minute ... is this for people who bought the A7C? I don't trust those people. Like, "Hey, here's something that looks like what you've already got, except it's actually bigger and heavier and you need new lenses." Oh but that sensor. If they cared about sensors they'd get something better than an A7C. You've all gone crazy. I just want an A6400 with 10-bit color and a real HDMI port. And either a USB-C port or a battery that lasts more than 15 minutes. Your choice. Is that too much to ask?

After using Samyang for few years, fisheye lens 8mm and 12mm F2.0 are my favorite on my A6600/A6400.
This 35mm F2.8 is my choice, since its design isn’t specially for APSC, and you could even go for Sony 35mm F1.8 for the same size / similar price. The cheaper Sigma 30mm F1.4 is much out performed of this Samyang.

dude what a coincidence.. I literally just ordered this last week on a whim with my sigma 100-400 and it's straight up great, light as hell, AF is quick enough also. Just doesn't do very well in low light bc of the design.

@@JustAskThisDad hmm is that the G OSS? basically for the price point the 100-400 seemed like a good bet for full frame. After ten hours with it I'd recommend it if you don't want to fork out the $$ for a gm. It is very sharp, the only drawback being a fair bit of breathing at 300-400, which doesn't matter if you're using high shutter speeds anyway. Another plus is it's just light enough to shoot handheld in the day. -- the sony was an extra $600 in my country for the 70-300 FE and the image quality didn't seem much better

@@iluvyunie it's the new lens sony launched recently at same price as sigma 100-400. Not the old expensive one. Thanks for personal feedback on the sigma, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. I don't think I will ever notice the breathing issue as I will mostly be shooting photos of birds and planes.

Samyang is the only reason I am using Sony. I choose my lens kit first and then the camera to fit them. Well I require compact low glass primes and as far as I am concerned most Sony and Sigma lenses fall way short of that; huge heavy, bloated with far too much glass and over sharp. I require the ability to make images look real at hyper focal distances for my panoramic street shots. Anything over 10 lens elements usually disappoints. Only a very good low glass prime like a Leica Summilux will separate picture elements using tone alone (goodness I hate bokeh). So with my Sony A7ii and A6000 I use Samyang 24mm f2.8, Zeiss 35mm f2.8, Samyang 45mm f1.8 (I have the Sony 50mm f1.8 and it will give good photos in sunshine but, its AF performance is lamentable. I do love this lens but it just isnt good enough) and Sony 85mm f1.8. I am desperate to add the brand new 28-60mm pancake zoom for trips which Ted Forbes informs is a stellar performer. Most of these Samyang lenses are superb and there is nothing else like them on the market (I beleive the f1.4 primes are a tad iffy but I dont buy fast primes anyway). If they added the L mount alliance to their range I would return to Leica like a shot as you can now pick up a Leica SL used for about £2000. That 35mm f2.8 would be superb on my Leica T; I live in hope as I love the Leica T - winks
P.S. My banner photo was taken with my Leica X113 with 23mm f1.7 Summilux; you just cant get an atmospheric image like that with a high glass prime; the Samyang primes come close ;-)
