  • In 1998, Indian superstar Rajinikanth’s film Muthu opened to a phenomenal response from Japanese fans, becoming a runaway hit at the Japanese box office, staying in the theatre for more than 100 days.
Yasuda Hidetoshi’s tryst with Rajinikanth’s movies also began with Muthu, released in Japan as Muthu-The Dancing Maharaja. Yasuda is one of Rajinikanth's biggest fans; running a Japanese fan site dedicated to the superstar, travelling to Chennai for the release of every new Rajinikanth movie, organising events that celebrate the superstar’s birthday and new movie release in Japan with other fans. He can often be seen zipping around in an autorickshaw that he imported from India to Japan, in honour of one of Rajinikanth’s characters from Baasha who was an autorickshaw driver. VICE met Yasuda in Osaka, Japan to understand how he became a Rajinikanth fan, stories and experiences from his travels to India, what it was like to meet Rajinikanth in person and what it means to be a fan of the superstar.

I could literally feel the love and passion of Yasuda San . We don't need money, wealth, power to become happy and satisfied. • @rythmicharmony

Throughout this 13:45 min long video, I had a wide smile on my face. It's amazing that how when Yasuda’s life wasn't getting a turn, entry of Rajnikanth sparked a new light into it. And despite the language differences he chased his passion and ultimately proved his dedication by meeting the Legend himself. By looking at how happy he is, I can tell Yasuda is a kind and nice person. So my dear Indians and all the people, always respect your culture, chase your passion no matter how different it seems at first, in the end your hardwork will pay!

7:11 I feel this dude's pain. I remember trying to learn Tamil back when the internet was almost non-existent (I'm Malayali born in the US, but have family in Tamil Nadu). Downright impossible to find anything teaching you the languages of each state. The main source was those "learn Tamil in 30 days" books, and even all my family were saying stuff in that book was wrong.

It's sadly a problem for languages that aren't popular among learners. I'm a Brazilian with interest in many cultures and I want to learn certain languages such as Tamil, but there are few resources still. If you want to learn an indigenous language, it's even more difficult to find books or classes.

It is telling and kind of sad that I suddenly realise that I don't see that much happiness around me in people's eyes, so bless this couple. And yes, Indian movies are often fun to watch. I've been blessed with countless movies from around the world, from Asia to Africa, Europe and the Americas. You can easily learn by watching Tamil News and buy a alphabet book and a English - Tamil - Tamil dictionary to know the meanings. And try to hear some melody songs or watch movies. It's actually easy to learn, speak, read, hard to learn writing, very hard to master it (there are pandits for those things).
