That's how mine was set up. The only issue I have with it is floating point errors. Each default cube is now 1mm but still one internal unit, so large objects, or objects with large scaling values quickly start to behave strangely or generate floating point errors (example: you type in 30mm on the x axis dimensions and you get 29.87 instead). Make sure to constantly apply scale to minimize this. The CAD-Like transforms addon for blender also starts to quickly produce spazztic results if floating point errors are encountered. Another option is to learn to use an open-source or affordable parametric CAD software alongside Blender. There are things that CAD just does many times better and there's nothing stopping you from using both apps together for their strengths. Recommendations for CAD: - Alibre ATOM (The basic version of Alibre CAD, popular with small workshops and has most of the features you'd get out of the full package. At $200 it's fairly affordable. It's aimed at hobbyists and woodwork shops but is licensed for commercial usage.) - Free CAD (Free and open source, but buggy and not as polished) - Fusion 360 Personal (Only if you don't plan to sell anything you make. F360 has free licensing for personal use, I know a lot of people still like this.) - TinkerCAD (Never used it and seems pretty basic, but if it fits your needs then it's an option) There are probably others but those are the ones I know about. If you plan to do a lot of CAD-type work or sell things I'd recommend Alibre, it's professional software and will pay for itself in saving you hours of frustration. Alibre's interface asnd workflow are heavily based on Solidworks so the skills you learn transfer over well if you get a job with CAD later on. I learnt Solidworks in college but the pricing is absurd for the freelance or home user, same with most other industry standard CAD packages... >->
@@Keep-Making btw you could of just done x/1000 with scaling and you would of had it correct without having to figure what is the correct number as 0.001 is 1 thousandth of a mentre
Thank you for making these tutorials, really clear and straight to the point. I just got my first 3d printer as a gift and I'm starting my 3d modeling journey. I don't have the money for the course, but I've already learned a ton of basic Blender use, through your tuts on YT.
Dude, I appreciate you so much! I watched this video when it came, used Blender for a bit, now I am back a couple years later and this holds up to Blender 4 as well! I have a cool project I am working on. I am using the Recreator3d, Ender based pull-trusion for recycling PET. The next thing I am printing is a phone case and then a light. Once I get it all figured out I am going to take it and a printer to the North Philippines.
It's bittersweet knowing that I can save my startup without a cube. I don't know how many cubes I immediately deleted..... and then re-added back in when starting. I like being able to set up everything like that without having to redo it every time. It gets old and I typically forget something.
Just want to say thanks so much for these tips! Especially saving the default startup file! Also want to thank you for ALL of your tutorials! Great stuff and made so that even fresh off the vine noobs such as myself, can easily understand and grasp! I've watched many (OMG sooooo many) others and I find your style to be the one that really works. You might speak a tad quick sometimes for a newbie like me, but that's what pause, rewind and replay are for, right? Lol! Thanks again, great stuff!
Funny, checking out the new CADSketcher your latest video was talking about. Had to come here to get the unit scale right since stuff wasn't quite right w/o it. So did all that made a CAD sketch via the wiki "getting started" section and noticed with all the adjustments I did the light and camera were nowhere to be found. Until I noticed they were in the hole of the part I made and like just a couple of mm from the world origin. Maybe I'll reposition them in the startup file :D
Pretty close to the default setup I use for modeling files for printing, I do with the devs would simply include a one click preference to setup modeling in millimeter scale.
Halo , i have a Orz om 136.1 hz aluminum alloy tuning fork , i want to change the handle sizes and the the top of the 2 wheels size . How to changed and kick what button to change in blender 3.4 ?
Great content! I was about to comment that you could link the two scales via drivers, but apparently the grid scale is one of the very few things in Blender you can't attach a driver to.
Useful stuff! Only thing I would add is maybe to reduce the navigation Orbit Sensitivity from the default 0.4 deg to something smaller. Bit choppy at this smaller scene scale otherwise.
When I change my system units like this my viewport screen in 1-3-7 mode broken!???(I mean ortho views of top left or right). Screen draws lines broken and diagonally.
Your videos are great, but once I did the metric millimetres changes my camera and lights are tiny. It's kinda confusing. Maybe I missed something you said about that somewhere?
very good tutorial .. it will be nice if you make a full Startup file with all customization and upload it .. also if you make a tutorial about your customization ...thanks
Thank you that was a great solid setting up Blender. Wow, I wish Adobe illustrator has such capabilities, Blender is far more advanced in its organizational features. 👌 I’m here because as a food packaging designer using illustrator’s 3D tools to create my mock-ups, it is not possible to create a model using a mesh tool or a gradient to export as an .obj file to use in Adobe Dimension. But I found myself using Blender. As of 2023 Adobe no longer support 3D in Photoshop. I will be looking at all your tutorials. And I subscribed.
Love this channel! Question for ya, do enabled add-ons persist between files, or would that be something to turn on as well and then save as the default startup file?
Thanks for the tut. However, after changing the unit scale to 0.001, the 2 meter cube becomes a 2mm cube. Is this really correct, or should the unit scale be left to 1?
Not sure what I did wrong but the thick bright white grid lines on the floor are missing going diagonally up and diagonally down on the opposite sides from each other.
unfortunately this doesnt work at all for precise working. if i try to transform(e.g. inset or extrude) via measures its all messed up and nothing is right. might work for freemodelling, but not for precise measure inputs.
HI YAAAALLL! I have this problem with the mm setup: I want to be able to work in MM, however scenes I make senes can reach up to 100 meters sometimes, so that is what I set my view cutoff to be. Unfortunately, after setting everything to MM, when zooming out, the Matcap and studio shaders are getting JITTERY, and my view is cutting off at about 10 meters, even though I set it to 100000 mmm (100m). It seems that Blender Viewport is just not designed to work like that. It is better to just keep it in meters and use fractions of it, f.eg. 0.001m is 1mm. That be it. I don't think blender is a good software for CAD like applications. Just buy a Rhino license. I's really cheap.
I was following your directions, but when I changed the edit lines to bright blue I was immediately like "I don't like that." Not because the color is bad, but because my brain says Blue Line = Mark Sharp. There's way too many small details to blender that you absorb over the years
Glad you're making blender content but for a total beginner setting up his system, this video is extremely fast and hard to follow and not to mention hard to see. Even boosting your scale to a whopping 1.25 it all comes out a blurry mess on any monitor that's not 4k.
Hey Maker Tales I have a questions: Would it be possible to make a review about cheaper fep sheet versions for resin printers? I’ve tried a some new fep that cost me only a few cents. It worked the first time but not the 2nd time. Just like to see what your results would be. (Laminate pouches) Video: ua-cam.com/video/4wnYcYb1YRw/v-deo.html
You didn't have a setup blender you didn't even show us once you're done you can go to this for tool pathway to see how your prints going to look while printing 😡
I searched for "how to change blender units" and found your channel. The information in your videos are incredible and really practical. Thank you!
The tutorials I have always needed
Came for just the mm aspect, ended up with a much much better workflow. Thanks!
BEST blender channel on the planet

Free Cad has had a major update, have you tried it (bug-fixes)?
Nice job! I always send people on r/blender asking about 3D printing to your channel. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much Pete. That means a lot. Any chance you've told them of the pre-sale 😉

thank you, i have always, after using rhino, considered blender to be a very very long haul flight in coach, you just upgraded me to first class.
the best blender tuto ever
0:55 And also guys, you can still play pressing [shift + spacebar] so no need to use spacebar to play anyways......

Nice. I also always turn on Face Orientation, and change colours blue to alfa 0 red to alfa 0.5. Results i always see if have wrong normals.

Great setup tips, Especially the 4K ones were very helpfull, thanks man.
Thanks! I keep coming back to your vids
Well done mate this is fantastic! Just starting to use blender after using fusion 360 and Autocad for years!
muito obigado! very fast and directly to point explains :D love it.
A super helpful and quick explanation, thanks so much!
hi, would like to know do i need to set anything in the camera? using 24mm focus length working for interior look weird.
Thank you for your help.
Helpful and to the point. Thank you!

EXCELLENT - Thank you very, very much.
Is it possible to save all these changes as a file so that you can setup Blender on any PC by loading your preference file?
When I export an stl. The resul is an extreme tiny figure... how can I export it in the same size??? Tks for your videos

Why didn't you remove the timeline editor at the bottom?
To anyone who is getting jagged edges after changing clip start, bump it up to 0.2 or even 1mm, makes the edges smooth again.
Your videos are great, but once I did the metric millimetres changes my camera and lights are tiny. It's kinda confusing. Maybe I missed something you said about that somewhere?
WHY set the unit scale to 0.001, if we straight up set the units to mm?
Thank you very much!

big help bro !
blender mm snap to vertex circle cursor to small when working with CAD transform grab tool. is there a way to solve the snap small circle cursor?
i was able to fix this problem in the cad transform add on preferences. i changed the circle radius pixel size option

Thats correct behavior.
However 2mm cube is odd! You can replace it with a 100mm cube and save the startup file.
why do you need to change it to 0.1? is it like converting everything to mm?
AWESOME!!!!!
Somebody help😢😢 I can’t find the answer anywhere. What unit scale number will be for centimeters? 0.01 ?
Great!!!
Not sure what I did wrong but the thick bright white grid lines on the floor are missing going diagonally up and diagonally down on the opposite sides from each other.
GENIUS
thank youuuuu!!:)
so gooood~~ but my Camera can not see any mash...
thanks so machhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think I'd need the course, since I figured out a bit about precision creation on my own. Such as using normalized values to scale faces.
unfortunately this doesnt work at all for precise working. if i try to transform(e.g. inset or extrude) via measures its all messed up and nothing is right. might work for freemodelling, but not for precise measure inputs.
i didnt know setting default startup was a thing this is revolutionary and somewhat embarrassing
why did i never watch this video before?!

Change your UA-cam quality settings to High. If your network is not optimal, UA-cam's "Auto Quality" will tend to default to 480p, aka blurry mess
