    I just picked up a 2000 K1200 RS and I love it. I have 900 miles in it so far and will put many more on it. I agree it wants to stretch it's legs, has plenty of torque and pulls like a train. It's a quick smile maker, handles well in the twisties. My only complaint is the relatively small tank compared to my R1200RT. I'm planing travel and camping trips with my K.

      @gmcevoy  Рік тому +1

      Great news, Mark! It is a brilliant sports tourer, isn't it. I am quite happy with the tank's capacity so far. I would think that your R1200RT might be more frugal than the K1200RS? Tank capacity won't differ that much, surely? How much fuel can the R1200RT hold?

    I very recently purchased a '99 RS that was stored for two years by the previous owner. Getting it sorted and can't wait to go for a ride. Viewed your service video with great interest!

      That is fantastic, Paul! It is a great bike, brilliantly engineered and extremely solid. It will provide many years of enjoyment. If you don't already have one, make sure to stack up all maintenance invoices to make a maintenance history file. These bikes are forgiving regarding neglect, to a certain extent. By that I mean that you can buy a poorly serviced one, give it some love, and make a decent bike out of it. A bit like the RS I have here, and the LT that I just bought. Nasty can of worms that one, as you will soon find out if you stick around. :-) Enjoy your RS as soon as you can, you are going to love it!

    MAY I SUGGEST THAT THE RS IS
    A BETTER OPTION, IF YOU CHANGE
    THE UPPER TRIPLE CLAMPS, TO
    ONE WITH THE HANDLEBAR CLAMPS
    FIT A BAR YOU LIKE, AND THEN
    YOU CAN TOUR ANYWHERE ALL
    DAY WITH A BACKPACK !
    CHEERS !

      @gmcevoy  Рік тому +1

      ありがとう Quite heavy indeed, but the weight is not much of a problem except during low speed maneuvers. You must have beautiful roads to ride, in Japan.

    Got a year 1998/2000 K1200RS which stood in the garage for 7 years. Reason: starter relay had burned so that when turning ignition key the starter motor started right off. Got a replacement relay from USA, a different brand as BMW stopped selling it. It's not starting so I ended at your site for advice. Thanks for the vids.

      You are quite welcome. I have had a similar issue with a K100 I used to own: it was the kill switch which had given up the ghost. Anyway, thank you for stopping by, and I do hope that you will find my future productions to be of interest! See you soon!

    The yellow beast is ready for spring! Good to see you ride the old fat lady again, Geoff! Can't wait for more bike content, especially the clutch job on the RS (yes, I'm a bit of a sadist).

      @@gmcevoy I've now put a few thousand clicks on my RS, and your description of 'dancing with a fat lady' was just spot on! Are there any other warning signs of an ending clutch, besides slipping when you twist the wrist? I think a hydraulic clutch gives you less feedback about wear, if that makes sense?

    • @gmcevoy
      @gmcevoy  Рік тому +1

      @@SsgtHolland The thing is with these dry clutches, is that they can go from one day to the next if the crankshaft oil seal happens to let go. When there is enough oil on the friction plate, it starts to slip. I do notice however that a certain "mushiness" in the clutch lever is a sign that it is about to go, accompanied by the fact that the clutch will engage rather late on the lever travel. Highly detailed information will accompany the video, worry not. 🙂

    Oh my God, I have the same flying banana like you and an LT in the shed which I am restoring, I can't believe it, BTW, you have to install bar risers on the RS mate, it is absolutely life changing, but go for 80mm or 100mm, you will thank me later !
    I have bought the LT to restore, because that is what I could afford, but I want to see how it feels riding it, like the position on the saddle and all that.
    With the RS after 2 hours of riding, I had pain in my wrists and neck, back...but after I installed risers, OMG !
    Ride safe !
    👍😀
    Clutch is slipping? no problem, replace the rear main seal as well, or slipping because the clutch slave cylinder is leaking, but you have to take the baby apart as well 🤭

    I predict that the LT will get some TLC but will be sold the reason being that the RS is best of both worlds being a sports touring but i could be wrong and it's going to be interesting to see how it goes. ultimately it's just great to get some content from you because you're a cool dude 😃

      Forks have a small leak, needs a good service and not been able to check anything since I got it back from having the ABS taken off, all small things that add up, the workshop it went to had it sitting in their dead shed for 3 and a half years, so don't know what damage has been done. The ABS seized and the boot caught fire, but apart from that it was/is an excellent bike. I now have to use a satnav as the circuitry won't allow the speedo to work without the ABS.
