  • So I went out and bought the second cheapest BMW K1200LT on the market. I hope to empower you guys and gals out there to fix your own K series bikes. They are notoriously expensive to run if you service at the dealership, but with adequate knowledge, you can do it yourself and save thousands! Stay tuned, folks, this behemoth needs some love!

      Thanks for your input, Barry. From the short ride I was able to make, I think I get it. I would like to take it out just a bit more, before starting the restoration. Right now I am making a list of what needs doing. It is a "while I am at it" kind of job, where everything gets sorted out. Do you think this would make interesting content for the channel? Changing the clutch, timing chain, adjusting valves, sorting out the brakes, pannier mechanisms, centre stand and so on?

    Changed the clutch on mine a few weeks ago luckily I'm a mechanic, you have to suspend the bike in the air, garages want about 2000€ to do the job, fantastic bike if you can do your own maintenance it's a major job just to change the air filter not difficult but time consuming time is money in a garage.

    Sorry about your surprise clutch problems. Seemed like it was much better in the second video, maybe cause u didnt "give it the beans" lol. Would have liked to see u do the maintenace on the channel

    Love the video mate !
    Bought mine 4 months ago for 1000 Euro from a friend of my father who had al zheimer , such a bargain . discovered all these gadgets, the comfort and the ease this bike gives at handling, huge difference with all the 80's honda trail i used to ride before . Doing the maintenance yourself much cheaper as you say , though i would never be able to change a clutch or an abs pump for exemple .
    It's crazy to think these bikes were 25K of worth when released and today can touch them for 10X less

      Thank you Paul! You made an absolute bargain indeed! I already replaced the fork oil seals, serviced the front calipers, replaced brake lines and pads. I also detailed it and replaced the windshield. It looks fantastic now! Went for a ride the other day, and strangely the clutch no longer slips. I pulled hard up to 180kph (on closed roads etc etc lol) and it went fine! A humbling experience, as changing course at that speed is like sailing a cruise ship, you have to anticipate 10kms ahead. lol Have fun with yours! They are fantastic bikes.

      You won't be disappointed, it is a great touring bike. Make sure that you find one with the maintenance book full of stamps. Service history is paramount with these, as some items can be costly to repair. Inquire about the clutch, which is a particularly expensive item to replace. Timing chain needs replacing every 80k kms, and adjusting the valves is a camshaft-off job, each shim is around 30€ and there are sixteen of those. So make sure to source a properly maintained example. 🙂 I went and bought the second-cheapest bike around because I am always up for a challenge, and I was not disappointed. Have fun!

    Turn the heated seat off my friend, it's probably on high heat, I'm sure you ll find the awitch on the side of the right seat

    Fantastic machine for sure and would make some interesting content i think you will have to do the clutch in order to sell it on as it is slipping so bad

      That is what I was thinking too. I can't really sell it on as it is, it wouldn't feel right. Looks like I just opened a can of worms!

    S.o.b needs a new clutch, well it looks very clean if that's any consolation.
    I'd say flip it now or unless a new clutch wont cost much and can be done fairly easy then flip it for a small profit.

      It has 75.000 kms, just about.

      Agreed,@@AscendedZombie . It is a heavy bike however, and it has had two previous owners so far, before me... This being said, I am guessing that the clutch itself is okay, and that it is the crankshaft oil seal which is leaking... The bike is 19 years old after all. My money is on that anyway, we'll have to wait until removing the gearbox to find out.

      ​@@gmcevoyYes that's exactly what happens with these. I just bought a -99 with 60tkm and it has exactly the same issue. You will find that the dry clutch is not so dry anymore.. It's a bummer to remedy but you will have an absolutely fantastic touring bike that you'll enjoy for years to come.

      @@JuhaEerikki Hi! The issue was in fact the clutch actuation rod who would sometimes not fully come back. I had it fixed, then sold the bike. I bought a K1600GTL instead.

    How much you bought it?
    If you keep it the only thing you need to change is a clutch ...for me keep it...

    I'm interested to know what you ended up doing. As you probably know the clutch is a big job on the LT, but I believe you can get them to last a long time by treating them differently to how most bike riders use their clutch. Because it's a dry clutch, slipping it for slow speed maneuvering is a very bad idea. I have learned how to get a balance between engine RPM and full engagement. The LT is definitely a bike for a confident wrencher but I have found that after you have done a few jobs on it, they don't seem so mysterious anymore. I have an 05 model in the same color as yours.

      I have done lots to it, but not the clutch yet. I will keep that job for the winter. As I am a professional mechanic, I fear nothing, but wrenching on my own cars and bikes does make me feel like I'm at work. I hope to get it ready for next year, and then I will decide if I keep it or sell it. It is a great bike nevertheless.
