The ZF gearbox

- Finally its here! My video on the ZF gearbox, would of liked to of done it sooner but finding a ZF as loud as the B10M at the end is hard to come across.
Any way here is a selection of buses which all have the ZF gearbox in common, I have attempted for the video to start off with the quieter ZFs and they get progressively louder through out the video but notice the word attempt...
The ZF gearbox i find is the best of the three gearboxes (see other videos on my channel for voith and allison) including reasons such as it is the most economical, gear ratios are better than the other gearboxes so gives the bus better acceleration, retarder not as sharp as voiths so braking is easier to list a few reasons. The biggest downside to ZFs are on many the gearchanges aren't perfect and you can feel a slight jolt especially from 1st to 2nd and especially on volvo olympian it likes to go bang...
Anyway here is a list of buses in the video and what ZF qualities they possess!
KX08KZD (Scania N230UD): You can hardly hear the ZF at all in the (apart from maybe slowing down in second gear) but you can tell its ZF from how fast it goes through gears.
YN64AKV (Scania N230UD): Same as above but a louder gearbox.
YN16WVR (Scania N250UD): Similar to above but you can gear the axles making a typical ZF gurgling sound.
SN15LNK (Enviro 400 trident): No ZF sound but a clunk and gurgling axles.
SN15LNR (Enviro 400 trident): Same as SN15LNK but at faster speeds.
N715TPK (Dennis Dominator): Mainly engine and axle sounds but you can tell from how it changes gear and from how quickly it changes gear that it is ZF.
P684SVL (Volvo olympian): typical quite quiet ZF groaning when accelerating and slowing down
MIB7717/J322BSH (Leyland Olympian): A nice ZF to this but long air releases causing a lot of hissing and a loud diff when slowing down but groaning in gears 1 & 2 is noticeable.
FX05GXL (Volvo B7RLE): Again another nice ZF you can hear monaing through the gears even slightly in neutral!
M916MKM (Volvo Olympian): A very loud ZF in gear 1! ZF goes quiet after that until decelerating in gear 2.
S958URJ (Volvo Olympian): Another volvo olympian with a great ZF gearbox you can hear moaning a lot even in neutral! Sadly gearbox was a bit knackered and was the reason for its withdrawal.
YX59CAA (MAN 14.240): Should of really put this earlier in the video but hey ho, this is a good example of the further away from the engine you sit the louder the gearbox.
L622TDY (Volvo B10M): An insanely loud gearbox you can hear groaning like mad! Good example of how a ZF sounds like with kickdown and non kickdown.
Thanks for watching!
The video alone show why many bus fans including myself like the ZF sounds the most. I do like the Voith Tridents but of the two. ZF wins hands down ;).
Great video by the way.
Perfect video! In Israel, on every Volvo B8R or B7R had a ZF Ecolife.
Les boîtes ZF 5 HP sont les préférées. Merci beaucoup ! Bien à vous !
🍀🚇🍀🏆🍀🚇🍀💫
As an operator I can tell you that we prefer the voith gearboxes. They are much more reliable however more expensive.
Merc Citaro, E400 (not Scania), Scania L94s & B10BLEs are my favourite for the ZF
Great informative video George! Ignore some of the idiots who are jealous they can't compose a video as good as you :-)
thanks dude :)
U can't get much thrash out of an n230ud/n270ud omnicity because it just growls when the gear changes
I waited so llong for this
Me to haha
+The295 2A lol
That dennis dominator, WOW!!
ZF is german and means Zahnradfabrik Friederichshafen /Gearfactory Friedrichshafen
you have got it wrong at the start the bus was on gear 0 not N, D, N, R are decided in the cab manually
East London is filled with growling N230ud Scania omnicities DD
Awesome video
There are two types of ZF gearboxes. ZF EcoMat and ZF EcoLife
if you wanna hear a zf then you should see a plaxton prestige
these are more like a manual transmission with helical gears, synchro rings and shift forks aren't they?
or are they a traditional automatic style transmission with planetary gearsets and multiple clutch packs?
ZFs are more like the traditional hydro-kinetic automatic transmissions, with clutch packs, torque-converters, solenoids and so on.
LOVE THE VIDEO ITS FINALLY HERE! XD
Thanks! :)
The SN15LNK hasn't really got a ZF Ecomat, it's got a ZF EcoLife.
You are counting the gears wrong. 2'nd gear is at 0:20, then 3'rd at 0:22 and so on.
The ZF gearbox has a weird type of way of changing gears. Here's the order, 1st unlocked gear, 1st locked gear, 2nd unlocked gear, 3rd mechanical gear, 4th gear and 5th gear. That's the order where the bus is driving off with a ZF Ecomat gearbox.
Hearing an enviro 400 climb a hill is so funny
TheOriginalGamerHD i know lol
Omnicity buses have them fast gear changes
The ZF Ecomat is the best gearbox.
When you going to do Allison?
Allison
ZF
anything else
I shift
Voith
I like these on Leyland Olympians. Someone done a Voith gearbox video.
zf sounds best on the e400 and the b10m
My channel has an sg280h with an excellent zf that’s better than all of the buses in this video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
5:14
21211s better 21213s horrid only thing is 21211 is noisy
The dominator is a voith not zf
I own that dominator. It’s ZF, only batch of ZF ones
@@georgegreenoshinei'm a bus enthusiast myself, and it confused me because the gear ratios sounds almost voith like. its probably the sound of the axels confusing me . it sounds almost like a dennis trident (when decelerating). anyway, that's a very very fantastic bus you own there ; ).
@@MidlandsbusEnthusiast yeah she’s unique now. Don’t think you’ll find another bus quite like it!
Ewww 21213 from scunny
toxic 2006 21213 was a nice bus when i had it, 21211 was horrid!
0:19 thats acc gear 2 but ok
Bro voith wins hands down i mean it is a looot better.
