All these toys are linked by the fact that they involve sand flowing from one place to another. Sometimes this flow can create amazing images, sometimes static images, and sometimes moving ones. In other cases the flowing sand gradually reveals words or a picture. And in at least one case, the flowing sand provides the energy which powers a toy's movement.
You are like the grandfather I never had who just came back from his archeology adventures in the mysterious deserts and mountains of the Orient/Africa with strange artifacts.
+Eratosthenes but he forgot to bring them so he just shows you the things he made with the sand he collected after digging
Ben Abbott Haha, yea!
How come everytime an elderly person has a TV Show or UA-cam channel someone always has to say “you’re that grandpa I never had”
He only does it part time.
this.
The sand powered wheel driven box was amazing. No springs, batteries, belts or rubber. A toy thats almost immortal if kept dry.
Absolutely. What a genius invention!
it’s one of the oldest mechanical devices too
I see a thousand people have said this before, but I *must* say it again:
I just watched an old man talk about sand for 11 minutes. And it was every bit as mesmerising as it does not sound.
This man has singlehandedly restored all the faith in humanity I have lost on the Internet today.

If there is a God (which is not a good discussion topic in youtube), I imagine him like this, marvelled by every little thing humans have made.

There is not.
Digital Dirk you are the reason he was insecure about posting his harmless comment.
Sleepy Pup I would blame Toadster06 first
Literally Everything 100th like
I feel like I'm gaining brain cells just listening to this guy.
+TheDaftWizard omg lol me2
+hikoseijuro922 Are you sure you aren't losing brain cells?
***** yea losing the half functioning ones to be gained as fully functioning xD
Same. I feel all educated now
TheDaftWizard Same man i love this guy
Finally found a type of ASMR that works for me; old man talking about sand
ASMR is for perverts.
+BugPope No it's not lol. asmr is any sound at all that gives you tingles like tapping or whispering. nothing pervy about it
I dont like those kinds of asmr videos anyway. I just like the noise ones, not the role plays
+BugPope Japanese Anime is some of the most perverted media in the world. barely scratch the surface and you get Chicks on their knees begging, teary eyed. You talk about ASMR and have so much Japanese pent up angst?
+nodoubtjd111 lol
Watching and listening to this guy speak calms me down like no other drug
He’s the best drug ever. Except pain meds when women are on their periods
this is literally the most entertaining/boring video I have ever watched. bravo.
what
+Michael Davis yar yep yer
ha i was just thinking the same thing im bored as fuck but i cant stop watching
Dumb recommended videos
+Michael Davis I subbed. Definitely different than channels now a days being all hyperactive and shit...it gets old. I like these videos. Some are funny, but most of all they're relaxing, plus he sounds badass!
"Night Out with the Boys"
He said it before it was even popular
Maybe what is too be learned is that it's been popular for years and years, and not the other way around
@@inigo137 So it’s not “years and years for popular been it’s that is learned be too is what maybe”?
@@PolyChromium You fried my mind for a second there. Kudos!
A phrase that's been in use for generations wasn't "popular" until zoomers discovered it?
@@jtofgc That's literally how teenagers think. "If it wasn't invented in the 15 years I've been alive, it might as well be fictional."
Half of the joy I get from this is the accent.
Tim once again shows us the wonders of sand through the way it flows rather than timers, with an amazing collection of almost hypnotising sand toys! Wonderful. :)
ThePlamzJoker Hello there! I found you! (btw make more with tim now or else) (and no I don't know what or else means) (JUST DOO ITTT!!!)
Right. Who are the 300 people that disliked this? I came here to watch Tim and kick ass. And I'm all out of Tim.
SilverMoon same 😂
SilverMoon I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
They have sand in their vaginas.
I love the water.
I love Tim too. It's fun trying to figure out what he's saying.
Only here would I watch sand falling down for 10 minutes.
Lemme guess why u feeling down...mmm...constipation??

Thank you so much for this! I have been fascinated by sand toys ever since I received a Magic Picture Window similar to the Wham-o one you show here. Years later I came across another one at a yard sale. They were enjoyed by my children too.
typical Grand Illusions video, they start off with the very first product and proceed to blow my mind.

I was just considering whether to add this to my ASMR playlist, actually.
The ball-bearing doesn't go through the sand when it's on top of it. When you shake it, a little bit will actually fall through the gap under the ball and make a step for the ball to go upwards, shake by shake, until it's back at the top.
am i the only person who loves "the riddle in the sands" title? its so interesting it makes me want to watch the video
the black sand and water actually looks like a pretty realistic representation of larva eruptions, pretty cool.
larva eruptions )))
I was thinking if you filmed it close-up, and maybe flipped it to negative, it would be totally passible. Cheap FX without the instant incineration.
;)
@Monkey - That's my Death Metal band's name.
;P
I wonder where you can buy those because I would definitely buy it
larva eruptions are not very healthy
Thankyou for sharing your wonderful collection Tim :) I particularly loved seeing the really old acrobat sand toy, I had seen one of these in the Museum Of Childhood, its fantastic to see it in action!
Tim, you beautiful genius, you never fail to entertain me even when I'm at my worst
***** His videos helped to cheer me up during my recent breakup. This man is a legend
There's just something about these videos!
Masky Hope everything gets better soon
+JaySweatshirt I just found this channel and I love it. Which is your favorite of his?
I can't honestly choose a single video, but the one that really intrigued me was the plethora of candles that he had!
these videos help me fall asleep, and i mean that in a good way. they’re soothing
I had a few toys like this growing up. They're very relaxing and hypnotic. My favorite was one of the sand-in-water kind with white and black sand. Made lovely patterns.
Such wonderful objects
I'm sure you have seen kinetic sand in stores now, it's like a solid that pours like liquid, it feels moist but never dries out. I think really it is a silica sand. Made in Sweden I believe.

extraordinary. heh.
I love these! About every month or two I'll come back and just binge watch these videos, even the ones I've seen before. Very entertaining! Tim is great at keeping my attention for the long pauses when waiting for something to happen, or even just explaining things that I already know. Fantastic stuff!
I have no idea why I like this channel.
(But I really do)
Tim shakes his wand until his ball comes out, extraordinary...
Wow! I really loved this one! That acrobat at the end was phenomenal! And the hills/mountains... terrific!
Tim's a cool guy.
The best channel on UA-cam. Just love these videos, thank you!
I love his understated enthusiasm. :) Good stuff.
This collection and demo is wonderfully fascinating. A life of collecting and being amazed. Thank you for sharing!!
I could listen to this man talk for hours. Such wonder and grandeur.
I'm pretty sure this was the first *Grand Illusions* video I watched & I've been hooked ever since.
Many thanks, both for the fascinating look into such a remarkable industry and the respite from a stressful & disturbing reality.
wwhy is this grandpas voice so calming?
all the anxiety i have had, has been washed away by sand of all things
Tim, you are a role model to all of us ageing men. You give us all the idea on how to be a perfect grandpa. Much appreciated. Thank you!
Everyone that Tim has had close contact with during his life mocked him behind his back, for the hoarding of completely useless inanimate objects.
Look who is laughing now!
#datyoutubemoney
Who mocked him ?
@@disclose_beauty friends, probably
*evil people*
I doubt anyone who would meet Tim would be willing to mock him.
The channel's not monetized, dude. Didn't you notice the lack of ads?
Your assumption: Bitter and unappreciated, hoards toys in expectation of future wealth and fame so he can rub his niche hobby in everyone's face
Actual Tim: Loved by everybody, never thinks about money or popularity, gets popular anyway for being gentle and happy
I remember years ago these sand pictures were so common. Enjoyed this as a first time visitor.
This guy is pretty cool. I subsribed.
I'm 20 years old, I own one of these, it's blue and white though. I know it's long before my time, but my grandparents owned it. When I was little I would always play with it while I was at their house. Now it's mine, in my apartment. Amazing toy.
1:48 "This weird sort of sandwich appears only on a few beaches..." :-)
I grew up with a sand sculpture toy. I would mess with it all the time thinking how much an artist I am lol until a cousin of mine came over and showed me what it was really capable of.
what a relaxing show.
Fascinating collection! Thank you for sharing!
Fantastic video, first i've seen of yours. I loved it!! :)
@8:47 I believe the difference between the sand forming sharp peaks on top and smooth ones on bottom is about sand distribution. On top the sand falls through specific set holes, forming defined peaks and valley. On bottom you have an observable "normal distribution", aka the bell curve. Each grain of sand has more space while falling in addition to being moved by the chaos of other sand falling along with it, so it spreads out. Both make predictable shapes based on the ability for the sand to move, on top movement is more confined, so you get sharper angles.
@2:30 I would extend the same normal distribution theory to the magic sand wand. As you toss it up while shaking you have put the large ball and all the sand into a free fall. They should predictably normally distribute. I imagine as the ball is tossed up a certain predictable percentage of sand will land before the ball, and others after. Every time this is done, a percentage of sand above will distribute below. As the as ball is larger and yet falling at an even rate with each grain of sand, every grain that is falling precisely level with the ball is going to end up appearing to be nearly under the ball. It would require dozens (hundreds?) of grains of sand to pile up to be at the mid point of the ball. So with every toss more sand goes under, than above. This eventually puts the ball on top. I would guess this would work no matter the density of the ball and if you had 3 sizes of objects, the largest would always end up on top and the smallest on bottom, so long as there was enough material for such a distribution to be observable.
Is it me or did I just sit here and stare hypnotically at a video about sand toys? I mean, I tried to look away.....but his voice...and the sand.... Whoah, I thought I was back there again. 'Extraordinary...' OH NO...😂👍
I absolutely LOOOVE your channel, and as a product designer, I am really inspired by the things you showcase here
Today is my birthday and I've spent it sick in bed. The "happy birthday" toy made me smile :) I'm a new fan of your videos, Tim. They've been a lot of fun the past few days I've been unwell!
Holy crap I've been watching this for more than 10 minutes! Hypnotic
The water and the black sand is really nice to watch.
This man is always interesting.May he keep showing interesting things for years.
Well isn't that nice? I for one think anyone would enjoy a glowing-sand-thingy in the dark room
11:17: Good demo of a well-known problem in shipping. If you are shipping granular material composed of a mixture of finer and coarser, the coarser will migrate to the top of the container. The reason is that if a void forms, it's more likely that a smaller particle will fall into it, effectively displacing larger material upward.
You could say those toys have defied the sands of time. I'll let myself out.
Tim Has A Beutiful, and a Interesting voice
Like if you agree
Jason Adam r/youngpeopleyoutube
Seeing these toys, I like to return back to childhood again :D
This is amazingly soothing and therapeutic! Thank you!
It's called the "Brazil nut effect" the reason why the ballbearing goes up inside the tube with sand
Glad he enjoys these things so much and shares with the world because I can't possibly collect so many of these things.
No hablo ingles, pero sus videos me transmiten mucha paz NUEVO SUSCRIPTOR
Actually the artwork in the bottle can be made without any glue. It's more of a special filling method with an artistic "destruction" of the layers along the glass walls by - kind of a - long toothpick.
Tim I really enjoy your videos, I think the stuff you shiow is so cool!
This dude gives off some real chill vibes.
It's amazing to see so many things that are so unique.I mean like you don't see this everyday.
after watching this I feel smart enough for Harvard😂
The bottles with sand pictures are not made with glue. At least they're not supposed to be made that way.
They use sticks to make the different colors go down by the side, and fill the different colors in careful order and quantities.
You can see some people making them in some craft fairs and find some videos that teach or show you how they're made.
This is why i love this channel. its just a guy sitting going through his collection. theres no controversy, and no reason for anyone to be an idiot. he definitely needs to be on higher scales
'Harry Potter and the Riddle of the Sands.'
That would have absolutely worked.i
This guy brings a new meaning of ASMR.
GLORY TO SHURIMA.

I was watching this feeling like I was suddenly udnerstanding everything about Reality and the Universe.. when suddenly I read
"GLORY TO SHURIMA" .. and I suddenly feel confused again.
+AWayKin I wish I could remember wtf I was thinking, also nice profile picture
I'd venture to guess that the metal ball moves up as you shake it because it creates space underneath for sand to fill in before the ball can move back to where it was, it slowly moves up as sand moves past it.
Sand of the Nile

Very interesting videos! I would like to see more water-type gadgets and toys like that water and sand one in this video and those oil based ones. I used to have one that would drop these blue oil droplets down a spiral in water and it was one of my favourite things.
The first ASMR channel I subscribed to
I've found my new favorite boring channel. In all honesty I thought the acrobat toy was clever.
I could watch these for hours.

Grand Illusions I'm surprised Tim doesn't have a coloured sand from The Needles on The Isle of Wight. Also if you visit you can make you own coloured sand in decorative shaped glass. Which is a must for everyone in the UK at least once in there life.
As a kid in the 70s I recall some.type of sand thing. It was in glass and the sand was colored...multicolored actually. I cant recall if it was wet or dry but they didnt mix together and they formed lanscapes or something.
about the toy at 3:00. That also works with larger particles like up to an inch in diameter, the smallest and lightest ones going to the bottom and the largest and heaviest ones staying at the top.
I remember trying to make one of those wands with the ball bearing and some salt ones, and it didn’t work. I never knew quite why, but I expect it’s because I had too much salt in the tube, and the experiment book had not tested to see it would work. Oh well, it’s nice seeing you do it and knowing it’s fact and not theory :-)
I was about to throw an internal fit on the beach in Turks and Caicos because I couldn’t find any shells. Once I sat on the beach and looked at my hands, to my epic surprise I found hundreds of tiny seashells on my hands. Unlike any other sand I’d ever seen, each granule was actually teeny tiny intact seashells!
When the sand is stationary it behaves as a hard surface, just like the ground, meaning that things can rest on top of it with ease. When the tube of sand gets shaken the added separation between the sand particles causes it to behave as a liquid. The motion of the shaking also allows the bearing to move up. When the bearing moves up and the sand settles the sand becomes compact enough to support the bearing. Shake the tube enough, and inevitably, the tube will reach the top of the sand.
The ultimate treasure showcased by grand illusions is Tim himself.

Tim is the greatest

I too, am a sand enthusiast. I collected sand from every place of this earth, and the seven earths beyond the sandy portal.
I wish we still made toys with this much thought and value... Now everything is electronic and cheaply made...
That enthusiastic "whoopie" was great.
I'm telling you he's trippin' balls on psychedelics.
How vulgar!
There's some interesting potential in those sand-canister toys...You know how, in video games, you sometimes get those 3D "holographic" map screens which point out where you are? One of those sand canisters could be an "Arabian Nights" take on the concept: you turn the canister upside down, and the "enchanted" sand gradually takes the shape of a 3D map.
I used to have something similar to the one shown at 7:57, and it's got some nice little waterwheels in it. It's a shame I cannot find it anymore.
Basically, my potential productivity is stolen by UA-cam by distracting me. So that the dollars that I would have earned, go to UA-cam instead. Every minute I spend watching a UA-cam video, or spent on Facebook, is a minute spent away from improving my own life. #MyLife
+MyLife Way to make me feel bad :c I really need to finish my paper lol.
+U N Same boat dude, that comment came from the heart. Assignment due in a couple of days, and there's still plenty of reading to do. Couple of hours on UA-cam (maybe more than that) 3 better call Saul episodes, 2 Pen and Teller episodes and reading many interesting articles on the Web that have nothing to do with improving my life. We feel bad, because we should, we are capable of more, and we should achieve more.
MyLife So true, we have no shortage of time thou we convince ourselves to think we do. Also procrastination is a bitch.
SAMESIES!!
I had one of those egg shaped toys as a kid. We had a pink one like that, and a blue one.
Idk why but tims voice is so soothing
If Grand Illusions were made into a movie, Anthony Hopkins would portray this guy.
0:00 Just realized he’s driving a KR200. Classy.
the ball bearing "floats" to the top because of the density of the sand. When the sand is shaken it performs like a liquid. Liquification of the sand.
I wish I had been able to watch Tim as a child.
