  • Quick, real-time video of installing a couple brass threaded inserts. These are great to install in places where bolts might go in and come out of frequently. The inserts themselves, as well as the drivers are readily available from places like amazon. I’m not including a link because they come in a variety of sizes. Search “brass threaded inserts” and pick your appropriate size. Thanks for following along!! Follow me on Instagram! Second Life Design

    Perfect!! Thank you, great job of explaining this. Now I just need to understand how to spec the male threaded stud to the female threaded insert.

    I was taught that the slot goes in first. I use a 6" piece of threaded rod with two nuts to start the inserts. Easy to keep it perpendicular to the work.
    BTW, I've never had luck with the stop collars. They're never perfect for the bit so they wiggle, and tend to come loose. I use a piece of tape on the bit.

      The slots index the install tool, at least the inserts I’m using.

      @@SlabGuy I saw that! I've never seen that tool before, cool device!!! I used a screwdriver in the slots until someone told me I was doing it wrong!
      The threaded rod is handy because it allows you to easily see it's going in perpendicular to the work. Two nuts lock against each other and push the insert in.

    Hey mate - how much smaller should the drill hole be than the insert so it holds in tight? Also I guess with slab timber you don't have to worry about movement?

    Total novice here. I'm thinking of installing some inserts in my desk and wonder if there is any rule of thumb as to how far into the wood you can safely go with the inserts? (my desk is only slightly over 1" thick). Also, would there be any value in using a small amount of adhesive before fitting the inserts?

    • @SlabGuy
      @SlabGuy  4 роки тому

      I wouldn’t use an insert longer than 5/8” long. And be very careful drilling. I’d practice on a test piece first. I don’t use any glue in case the insert ever needs to come out.

      The hole needs to be the diameter of barrel of the insert, if you can not measure the diameter or do not know the diameter of the barrel.
      Hold up several drill bits with a light behind the insert. You want the drill bit to hide the barrel but still be able to see the flutes (ridges) extending beyond drill bit. I hope this helps.

    • @allens7476

      It depends on how hard the wood is. Start with one about the size of the insert body (minus the threads) If it goes in with difficulty, go a little bigger. I've split some poplar trying to force an insert in too tightly.

    What is the benifit to using this method over normal screws please? I'm currently making my first table so am quite naive

    • @SlabGuy
      @SlabGuy  4 роки тому +6

      I prefer using these for a couple reasons. The main one being that the hardware can be taken out many times without compromising the wood. If you ever have to move the table, it’s a big help.Second reason is appearance. It looks like a nicer final product. They aren’t expensive and are very easy to install.

  • @michelleperkins7797

    Thanks for the video, do threaded inserts allow for wood movement? I've seen lots of things saying you shouldn't screw the legs directly into the top due to seasonal movement, but wondered if these pieces of hardware reduce that? Thanks in advance.

    • @SlabGuy
      @SlabGuy  3 роки тому +4

      They don’t allow for movement on their own. They are preferred over just screwing straight into the wood because the fasteners can be taken in and out with out damaging the wood.

    If the bolts are are fully tightened onto the leg bracket, why don't the threaded inserts come out when going to remove bolts?

    • @russell3421
      @russell3421 6 років тому

      Steve Ward the insert’s shape doesn’t allow it to spin backwards

    • @timetravellingbunny3952
      @timetravellingbunny3952 5 років тому

      Steve Ward - The inserts are installed with more torque into the wood, and would require more torque to remove from the wood, than is required to remove a screw or bolt from the internal threads of the insert.
      Russell - The special driver bit (possibly from EZLok) used at 3:50 to install these inserts will just as easily remove them. Nothing in the design of the inserts disallows them from spinning backwards.

    Appreciate the effort but it would have been a better video if you described the sizes of how deep the first pilot hole was and the size of bit you used and then the size of the second bit. And what kind of bolt or screw did you use???? And how were the legs attached? Not much to learn here and it was hard to see and that music in the background is useless and unnecessary. Just saying ...

      No problems so far. The only issue I have ever run into with these is installing them into end grain. In softer woods they do not hold as well, in hardwoods, it is generally better but can vary also.

      It depends on the thickness and quality of the plywood. They do make shorter inserts that are less than 3/4”. If it’s a lower grade plywood it can pull out pretty easily.

      it seems everyone is correct here (www.groov-pin.com/tap-lok-wood-series.html). I was seeing different suggestions and hit upon an actual manufacturer site that recommends either way depending on the wood (slotted-end down for medium-hard woods, up for softer).

      The guy in the video you linked says the purpose of the slot is to cut wood, then says you should first drill a hole to match the outer diameter of the insert.
      What would be the point of having slots designed to cut when inserting those slots into a hole that’s already as big as the outer diameter of the slots?
      Those slots are for insertion tools, not for cutting wood. That’s why manufacturers of that type of insert make insertion tools that engage with those slots.
