wow that pull at 40psi really looked like a friggin rocket ship for that short time.

Boost never went above 25-26 PSI for the entire run, failed when it went into 40+!

Check out John George at speed for a few minutes before the engine grenades. This short five minute video is exciting and heart-breaking at the same time. The car is SO FAST, and it was tough for the team to fail to record a great time and a win with the car. Read the full report here - bit.ly/1rUAiup.

***** We've had a 12 years of success at tracks. The NASA Nationals is just the last race of the season wherre we run challenge cars all year. I don't know of another replica/component car company that races as much as we do and failures are part of success. The 818 just ran 56 seconds at Lime Rock and The GTM that was in a fire has won the west coast NASA championships, numerous SCCA wins and placed 4th overall in the 25 hours of Thunderhill! Good run before the failure. You were reeling them in and flying by.

    Engine failure caused by
    1. Not up to temp. Piston expansion vs block expansion means clearance issues
    2. Intake air temps SKYROCKETING! This will toast the boost controller causing high boost if the line falls off. Or solenoid fails.
Poor intercooling and no thermostat to the coolant to allow proper warmup. Keep the IAT BELOW 120f

Sucks his engine blew up on him. Subaru parts are fairly common though. So not as devastating as a BMW or something Italian blowing up.

25 pounds of boost seemed excessive unless the engine was built, then when it blew up it was running closer to 40 pounds! KABLAMO! Did you lose a vacuum line to the wastegate?

Adrian Trosclair use metal zip ties on all hoses with high psi

Emile Tabb if you lost a vacuum hose wouldn’t the car revert back to wastegate spring pressure…...

What I am most impressed by is the fact that it hit 1.5g in some of the corners

Incredibly fast car! Seems to defy the laws of physics! It must be incredibly light to be able to accelerate, slow down, and corner the way it does! Ran beautifully at 25 lbs of boost. Good driver too, knew how to drive this 818 on the edge. Would have loved to see what the car could have accomplished. I cringed when I saw the boost start peaking and saw the smoke. Better luck next time guys. Thank you for sharing this awesome video nonetheless! This car is amazing.

RPM seems a little too high with a cold engine, oil pressure, water temp?7000 rpm why is that oil pressure so high ?clearance issue? The motor could of had a problem before the run,but because of rpm and water temp,it will be hard to tell if that is why it broke.Take it easy guys,

im surprised the 5 speed holds up to the torque in this setup as a transaxel with only the front axels being used. since subaru people dubbed this generation 2.0L 5 speed the transmission made of glass.
or since its only using the 2 front axels and not the center diff and rear, does that mean the torque load is actually cut in half?
if thats the case then this gearbox could hold a lot more power than i expected in this setup.

Yep. The vacuum line failed and caused the wastegate failure. Engine couldnt take 44 lbs!

Factory Five Racing yea, i noticed it sounded rough in the mid 30's boost, then when it went to over 40, it was getting tight in a hurry. I had that happen on a ford motor, stuck a piston when it went past 30. nasty sound.

7000 rpm and 130 degree coolant and 90 pounds of oil pressure sure didn't help matters. What a cool car though

Water temp 134 degrees + 7000 rpm= plain old stupid, look at the oil pressure 100 pounds, come on guys warm up the engine to operating temp before ever attempting laps.Sorry John, but you cannot operate a engine like this, granted there may have been a clearance problem or some other unseen problem, but the cold, high RPM operation is taboo in the racing world.
