    I feel like this road is a pretty apt allegory for life, particularly at the advice that was given; "I told you son, there ain't no 'place' to reach. There's just the road and wherever you decide to stop driving."

      Especially with the other character's reasons for stopping. Farm guy to keep himself busy with something new and was defensive about pressing on. Debra getting a "calling" to stay even though it wasn't ideal. She stuck with what she knew from before. The messages he collected, those people had some hope that there was a way out for their messages, but didn't feel it enough to keep going. The apartment folks couldn't see the end of the forest through their concrete trees. That turned to bitterness despite being on the home stretch. D-class lost their opportunity from a shitty attitude. All parallels to what drives decisions in real life.

      Its got a bit of a different feel to it, but if you liked this one you should definitely listen to the audio drama "The Left Right Game," which was originally a series of r/nosleep posts by the same name. Its one of the best stories I've ever seen come out of this side of the internet, has incredible voice acting, and has a lot of thematic similarities to this scp. Honestly, I'd be surprised if this scp wasn't inspired by it.

    I think the reason the people in the apartments are angry is because they chose "safety" in numbers. Instead of having a purpose, like the agent; or providing sustenance, like Brenda; or knowing where they want to be, like the farmer -- they chose the closest to what they had left behind whether it was right for them or not. And now they're stuck and angry.

I'm 29 now and I've unfortunately never had the chance to do anything with my life worthy of note. I was a military engineer for some time before being injured and sent home, now the road has no enjoyment to it, like I'm travelling because I have to... and despite a couple of attempts to stop. It's not for lack of trying mind you just hitting a brick wall every time I try and finding it harder to motivate myself with each wall hit. I did appreciate the reference at the closing parts of the SCP entry with the field of reeds. Very nice symbology.

A long journey where one's resolve and heart are tested while those who could not make the journey attempt to stop you, but this is far less violent than that. The sands devour the weak of heart trapping them in the dunes for eternity and are ANGRY about it, much like the folks in the apartments. No specific gates to pass through were described however so it's not really all that similar, but is a nice comparison.

    Ultimately I enjoy that there was an ending for Agent Simian, I figured there would be since we had the tapes but somewhere along the lines as I lay with headphones on and eyes closed I joined the journey. A simple journey but one filled with meaning. One with a man who went in facing the barrel of death and ultimately came out contempt with the fate life gave him. Living the final moments on the terms he decided and finding the end of the rainbow.

    I think that the end of the 'road' was the apartment complex, full of people who grew content with bad situations but could never go further, never reach happiness and as a result are spiteful with people who could go further, wanting to keep others from getting what they could not. The changing of the fields to being reeds is also probably a deliberate allusion to the land of reeds and is there for a representation of the afterlife.

    • @LordIsrafel
      @LordIsrafel 2 роки тому +4

      In ancient Egyptian mythology, there was a possible afterlife of Sekhet-Aaru, the "Field of Reeds". Should the deceased pass trials to prove his righteousness, he is granted access to a paradise in which gods and fellow righteous souls dwell, and was described as being full of waterfalls and beautiful natural wonders, with islands of very fertile soil so they may grow the food they will dine upon alongside the gods they serve.
      From the Wikipedia entry: "Additionally, a... notable honor of residing in Sekhet-Aaru was the means of communication. The deceased were able to convey thoughts to one another, the gods, and those they had previously lost"
      I like to think he entered a sort of field of reeds of his own, with the car and audio logs being his way of conveying the thoughts of those he interviewed to those that had lost them.

    Great story. The timing for this one is a little crazy for me because my Dad just passed and I've been having a lot of the deep "what is life about" thoughts. This just delves into that more. Big unattainable goal would be building a Space Elevator, probably won't happen but hey, better to aim for the stars and hit the sky than aim for the target and hit the ground.

    I'm not gonna lie, this kind of SCP is one of my favorites. The big ones with world ending consequences or ones that can end your life or entire existence are interesting and horrifying but these ones... these quiet, thoughtful, melancholic ones bring a special kind of mood, and the creativity behind them is just a little different than those bombastic ones. I for one am all for you presenting more ones like this - or any ones that you so choose. I enjoy your content more than most others I find here.

    There's something about this that I keep returning to. Probably because I drive, a lot. Or that I often get a similar feeling while doing so. And that I rather like being able to feel that, and embrace that feeling of calm peacefulness as it settles in.
    Sometimes I wonder if some of us are wired to be travellers, as it's a fairly similar sensation and state of mind when I'm wandering a new city, or hiking an unfamiliar place. As if I felt like it, I could just keep walking forever to see what's over the next crest or turn. Not that I don't plan on returning, eventually, but that there's no rush, and why not just go for a while longer until I'm ready to turn around.
