Honda's in-house 10-speed automatic was beefed up for the MDX Type S/TLX Type S and shifts 40% quicker. Would love to see this transmission in the Integra Type S.
Possibly in the ADX Type S if Acura makes it
@@drivescene6747yes! The ADX Type S and hopefully with the Integra Type S at its mid-cycle refresh.
the accord 2.0T was quick was well
@@backtoshallabal6662 indeed. It would've been nice to see Honda keep the 2.0T in the Accord but give it the upgraded Type S 10-speed transmission.
@@TheBreakfastLover hopefully Acura gets their heads out of their own a**e* and give us the ADX Type S with the 10at and an AWD system (probably won’t be SHAWD, but at least the AWD system from the hrv)
The MDX impresses once again
Not sure how lol 😅 The Durango is heavier and only has a 5 hp advantage. The extra tq is really for towing. The Durango can tow 8700 lbs.
@@TrentonThomas627 it’s a drag race, no one cares about towing.
@@drivescene6747🎯
At least one Type S model can win the occasional race.
@@layne4376 correct. People seemed to believe that the MDX would be the slowest in its class like the TLX is, but apparently what isn’t understood is that the MDX is lighter than its competitors and the TLX is heavier than its competitors.
The weight to power ratio speaks for itself
MDX: 13.8
Durango: 14.9
the lower the number the faster...
The only thing that could *possibly* alter the outcome would be a superior tire choice for the Durango over the MDX. But, at that point, it's not apples/apples I suppose. Plus, I'm sure the powerband for that turbo is set fairly high, probably mid to upper RPM band (which explains why off the line they're nearly comparable, but as soon as 2nd gear shifts the turbo really starts to produce power).
Been Honda fan since 89 had an Accord LXI flip light. I've owned 15 so far including Acura. Currently own 03CRVEX and best Accord made 93SE H22a swapped. 😊

Honda's 10-speed Transmission is no joke.
Unfortunately Honda is notorious for subpar reliability on their automatic gearboxes. ZF is the opposite
@@KubanKevinironically, the previous gen TLX had the ZF9 transmission and it was terrible. The Honda in-house 10AT has been rock solid for the past 6 years.
@@KubanKevin I have owned 6 different Honda's over 25 years. Zero Automatic transmission issues. Actually Zero issues over that time. I have owned 5 other manufacture vehicles and everyone of them have had issues, one (Chevy) had transmission issues. My real world experience does not back up your claims. I put my money on Honda or Toyota any day of the week. I cannot say the same for Mopar, GM, or Ford.

Yeah you can’t hide the weight though honestly they handle really well for how heavy / big they are.
I have a durango hellcat. Step your game up kid.
@@EJD2014 I’m not sure they said anything worthy of being dunked on here. There is nothing wrong with the 392 Durango at all.

These cars cost a lot and in order to get them without cash you need credit established so you should actually step you game up and get some cash or credit built up 👌🏼
I think if Dodge found a way to step there game up with the amount of weight they use on there muscle cars they could be top of the line and have the fastest muscle cars.
As the owner of an MDX Type S Advance, I'm surprised by the result. I did not expect it to beat the Durango. But the type S an incredibly fun car to drive, as it does everything so well, and it has plenty of luxury features as well. And in reality, both of these vehicles are plenty fast, but Im gald we have the MDX.
The weight is killing the Rango! But I absolutely love my 2021 Durango RT, Tow N Go - this package gives the RT every single SRT part except the engine. But I'm going to slap a supercharger on her this summer and some other bolt-ons and it'll be an awesome quick 3-row SUV daily driver.
I’m convinced Acura retuned the 2024 MDX Type S’s, because it has a higher limiter than 112 now.
The 2024 is slightly retuned
Great video Sam! Since the mdx type s is booming lately in here would have loved to see just for the reference how it would stand against the accord 2.0T 😁 because why not its all about having fun
You say he's got a better transmission, but the Durango has the 8-speed ZF ))) People say it's a good transmission.
ZF has many types of transmissions - lower end and higher end. This is not the highest one
@@SamCarLegion The difference between them is the power/torque of the engine it's mated with)). Durango 5.7 HEMI has the 8HP70 model which you will find in cars like Durango/Grand Cherokee 6.4 HEMI, Rolls Royce Phantom 7 and 8, BMW 7 series F01/F02, lots of BMWs or Alpinas F30/F31/F32/F33 and even G20/G21, Aston Martin Vanquish 2nd Gen, Range Rovers etc.
This is nowhere near "a lower end ZF".
@@Eugen-E i get that but they are not tuned the same way even though they may be the same. You can actually hear the shifts in the acura. The 10speed has the quicker shift. It won’t change the outcome by a lot if the Durango had faster tran set up but it could be closer.
Yeah put the Durango on a 600lb weight loss diet and see what happens.
@@thorpower1015do the same to the MDX and see what happens
No surprise since Honda competes in F1. Who is Dodge..err I mean Stellantis? A multinational conglomerate that is going to pick the pockets of American fans until Dodge is buried alongside Pontiac, Oldsmobile, AMC, Plymouth, Mercury and eventually Buick. All bark, no bite.
In looking at American brands, seems like Dodge has fallen behind the times in technology. You cannot keep making cars without giving it thought, functionality and ergonomics. Acura MDX has been an Acura staple since 2001, when the MDX model showed up at the dealerships. Since it has been in a constant evolution, while now its in the 4th generation, Acura will continue to evolve their best family do it all SUV. I owna 2011 MDX with SH-AWD and the MDX truly makes the best out of torque vectoring technology. Something that was offered way back on the 2nd generation, not many understand the importance of it or the application of it. My MDX with 3.7 v6 engine has a 300hp in the base configuration, while the engine lacks efficiency, there is plenty of torque available at low revs. I believe my MDX with only 115k miles will definitely last 200k with very basic maintenance. Acura reliability is definitely worthy attribute. Not sure how reliable Durango can be past 100k miles.
You know what up for sure.
Yeah stellantis is doing their American companies a disservice I don’t see Chrysler are dodge lasting 5 years

As you said Sam, the advantage the MDX has is its transmission. Very smooth and quick with 10 gears.
2 SUVs that would be good to drag race against the Durango R/T are the Chevy Tahoe Z71 5.3 and Ford Expedition XLT. All 3 fall in the same SUV category and have similar horsepower.

hope to see mdx types vs tx550h+ or rx500h
I’m pretty sure that hemi V8 has cylinder deactivation, so when you’re cruising it helps with the gas mileage considerably.
I am quite surprised to see the MDX beating a HEMI. I don't understand why Acura limited the top speed to only 112 mph.
The weight is the big difference here, the Durango weights the same as my fairly loaded F150, everything else it competes with is 500lbs or more lighter.
Agreed re: top speed; all MDXs have a 112 mph governed top end.
@@MidnightAspeck tuner will change that 😊
Tires most likely
No surprise considering the power to weight ratio.
Power to weight ratio. But, the tow and go RT durango would be a match with a fully loaded mdx type s in my opinion. And would be much interesting race for sure. 😎👍
Is that the tow and go trim for the Durango? If I'm not mistaken the tow and takes some drivetrain goodies from the srt
Tow and go gets suspension/brakes but not engine/transmission upgrades so overall the performance results would remain the same.
@@S8ER doesn't it have launch control
@@TrentonThomas627 no launch control. It does have Snow, Tow, Eco and Track mode though. (Just confirmed with my friend who owns a 2022)
@@S8ER I read on the forums it has the srt transfer case , SRT exhaust, srt tires as well. I'm sure on the dyno it likely puts out slightly more than the regular rt
@@TrentonThomas627 yeah it may have the transfer case (I did just see comments about that), transmission looks to be the same as the R/T and it keeps the R/T gearing.
I just had a 2023 rango hemi for a rental and it moves fr
Good race video between the Acura MDX Type S and the Dodge Durango RT. The MDX had the advantage due to quicker shifting for the transmission. It's also a little lighter in weight, but primarily the quicker shifts was the main one. Also, as for the MDX, was it in regular drive mode or Sport mode for the races? If it was in Sport Mode, then that would be another reason it had the advantage.
Yeah also the durango was at a disadvantage since 1 they break torque it which normally on N/A vheicles makes them launch slower and it looks like they are running on regular gas which makes it a hell of alot slower as I do drive a early wk2 durango with the 5.7 hemi as on regular gas it did a 0 to 60 in 6.8 7 seconds range while the midgrade made it much faster by 0.6 seconds and I could easily tell by driving around, as also I don't if the durango was in sport mode either.
how about use the paddle shifters from a roll in sport mode, how you drive makes a difference. Have to use the torque advantage to get a jump in the hemi.
MDX is more aerodynamic, lighter, has a 10 speed transmission, huge advantage. The Durango needed about 30 more HP to be in the mix.
Not too surprising. Even the base engine MDX get moving when set to Sport mode and the tranny set to sport.
We need that X7 “xdrive40i” vs mdx type S
Agreed, X7 would be interesting. I've got a GLS 450, I'd love to see how it does against these SUVs also. Should be competitive on paper.
@@Driver.Diaries gls450 would be a perfect match too & the ford expedition platinum (swb) only because thats making 400hp from the 3.5TT
I love my MDX, I almost bought a Durango, the Durangos look great but I really don’t trust American cars anymore, my 2015 Silverado has had nothing but problems, it has been well maintained and it’s just one thing after another, it’s broke down right now, I have a 2000 Silverado that still runs great with 240k on it, of course I had to put some work into it, my Expedition had catastrophic failure at 200k.
Sq5 vs mdx?
It's not as much the transmission difference, but the fact that the Accura weighs a whole lot less. The hemi's torque advantage fills the wider ratios without problem and launches the Durango harder. The power to weight ratio difference really comes into effect at higher speeds. The Accura may also be more aerodynamic, but I'm not sure.
MDX Type S 💪💪
Put 2 people in the MDX and see who wins
@@Freddy_Confetti still the MDX, even if you have 7, because Dodge is ass
Tryna compare a stock hemi vs a supercharged car is delusional 😂😂 search up 392 cs type s 💪🤯
So many factors, but I love my Acura
Its the weight that plays the bigger role, then its the transmission and then aspiration. Nothing to be humilated by. The durango did fairly well considering the mdx has more advantages. Try running 89 octane in the durango next time. Hemi’s love 89 octane
Does the Durango have a ZF8?
Yes
@@dbobeatz6175 The ZF8 is a great transmission. But I know not all ZF8's are "Created Equal". Depends how the transmission was tuned from the factory and probably very sleepy in the Durango's case. I've had a SQ5, X3 M40i and now a X3M and all 3 have/had the ZF8. The ZF8 in the BMW's feel night and day from the Audi. Most likely the way BMW tuned them from the factory.
The Durango is a good bit heavier but it has a RWD layout which is much better then anything with a transversly mounted engine in my opinion.
None of us should be surprised.
The Durango weight is way higher.
Also I understand why they paired these 2 cars up as far as horsepower goes.
But if you are a buyer and have the Acura $, you would be shopping for the SRT 392.
Price point is more equal at that trim level.
And let's be honest ... If you did that video. I don't care about the transmission difference. The Acura has no shot.
So again I understand why this video is made lol
one of the few logical comments here! wow
These aren’t even in the same category or price range. Wouldn’t the 392 Durango be its competitor?
When someone’s putting car lengths on you it’s not a good race.
Sport mode/ and use shifters pleaseeee as yes weight is a difference as well
The MDX is just an all around way nicer vehicle. Period
not the transmission in the roll race, its the weight difference, its huge
The 10-speed in the new Acura models are super quick around 50/60 mph (I’m in the u.s) the car holds all the power around corners, Hondas/acuras are better on rolls vs a drag no doubt about it.
Try 5.7 Tow N Go next time I wanna see if it makes any difference with factory SRT pages and exhaust
Please Sam, Acura MDX Type S vs Lexus RX500h F performance
Thats a walk

I'm sensing a Ford Explorer vs the Dodge Durango drag race might be next.
So there IS replacement for displacement.
My 2018 Forester XT took an R/T to gapplebees. I think the better match up for the Acura would of been the SRT or even an Explorer ST
Good one
The weight makes a difference too

Not bad for a pushrod V8 and heavy. That's technology for ya. I like to tow + the V8 sound, if I could afford it, Durango ftw in my world
Guys, I just started watching many of your videos and after watching this one I think you need to put the 2.0 turbo accord against the MDX and watch the Accord take the win again.
I’ll take the 5.7 Durango and throw a $4k TorqStorm supercharger kit on it and a Tune, and make 500hp for less than $6k invested.
And live at a repair shop😂😂
And Honda again! I love!! 😍
Hey Sam I think the 2019 x3 m40i with 355 hp would be a better match up for that type S they have simillar hp because the sewer x3 m40i has 382

Idc honestly which is “faster” or “better” I was still sold on the TYPE S very nice vehicles and the ride nice with style even the A spec is wonderful too Acura’s current line up is pretty solid.

Three row MDX A TOP in its class ALWAYS.
A race with an R/T with Tow N Go package would have been a better race. It is factory tuned with SRT parts and has track mode with more aggressive shifting and a 3.09 differential. It's a more comparable model to the MDX.
You need to use manual mode and go back into automatic to rule out the kickdown reaction times.
Acura all day but it needs a lil more hp. Love that Super handling awd system. A lot of people sleeping on it.
The Durango is much heavier and trust me i used to have the Durango SRT 392 when it first came out. That bad boy was heavy.

If you mean, it’s the transmission because of gear ratios that may be the case, but it could also be the weight, aerodynamics. It’s probably not one thing.
The Durango keep its tow specks so it can still do it work but stay fast enough to get in to traffic and interstates with a huge trailer with sacrificing its capabilities as a power factory

Not too bad considering that body on frame old Durango is a true old school 500 lb heavier suv and the Acura is more of a crossover with a better tuned transmission

@@niuhuskieguy oh when did they change that because that thing is a heavyweight
5.7 hemi hasn't impressed me in anything. I was unimpressed in the durango, was unimpressed in the 1500, and surprisingly unimpressed in the grand cherokee. The 5.7 feels overrated by approx 50 horsepower.
The 6.1 and 6.4 hemis are a whole different story.

Transmission??? It’s more down to weight lol
Yes of course - but better tranny helps. Also more torque in the Durango
@@SamCarLegion The maximum torque of an engine matters just when starting from a dig in the first gear (max torque is at low/mid rpm which you don't use after the first gear) after that the power is what matters because it's the same torque but at higher rpm.
That's why tuned diesels are good off the line but at higher speeds they are not.
Durango has a ZF transmission. The X5 has a ZF 8spd tranny and showed the MDX its taillights. I think weight and aerodynamics came to play here.

Sorry Max, but your test wasn't really a fair comparison unless you have the "TOWnGO" package on the Durango. TOWnGO changes the shift ratios on the ZF transmission plus it includes all the SRT performance goodies that improve 0-60 to 5.7 seconds - equal to the MDX Type S. Without the TOWnGo package, you should only be comparing this Durango to the non-Type S MDX.
This definitely was a good race. I thought for sure with the Durango having more torque and horsepower, that the Acura would come in second. Japan did a great job on that transmission and engine. Note...if you get the Aspec MDX Model, your engine and transmission will be built at the ohio factory in the US vs from Japan.
