- In March 2012, Future Music Magazine dropped in to the studio of Nicky Romero to find out how he created his hit track Toulouse. With tips on mixing, starting a track and creating a classic reverse reverb effect this is not to be missed!
You can get more production tips from Nicky by heading over to his channel and check out his latest production video Protocol LIVE: Studio Session with Nicky Romero #01

To the annoying ass people saying that music producing like this isn't a talent, or it's a disgrace to the generation; you're dull and your opinion is blindly biased. In reality, a person who produces music knows as much about it as someone who learns one instrument and plays in a famous band. If you're a music producer such as Romero, you're essentially a one man band, and you make all the beats and mix them. If you want to bitch and complain about there being almost no vocals, then I don't think you've ever "felt" music in your life. 90% of the time the emotion is in the beat. The lyrics just give it a backbone
All was good until you said most of the emotion is in the beat
Saul Silver In Toulouse, half of the song is very much the beat. The drop makes you feel great and upbeat. This is EDM, we're not talking about Taylor Swift or Adele
***** oh yeah sorry I thought you were talking about music in general my bad
100% true
thomas gleeson tienes toda la razon! =)
He always starts with a kick... Kickstart :P... lol
hahahh
ba dum tsss
Mmg 94 I see what you did there
I didnt liked ur comment becoz it has 69 likes already
Big Smoke mah dog
at the end of the day all that matters is who's making the hit. Many producers are self taught and use their tools the way it works for them. Theres no right or wrong way of making music. Just enjoy the art of music and move along. - New Generation Music Producer
Jaciel Sanchez love this what you commented I be live that too.
beam man ?
True, mate! That's whats happening today in the industry
So true man, I’m a self taught producer who has been producing for 4 years ish now and it’s always just been about the art for me
Nicky Romero is an absolute genius. True inspiration! I'm glad there's producers out there willing to share their knowledge.
i watched this for the very first time when the episode came out and now that i re watch it today, 3 years later, i understand pretty much everything lol
I felt the exact same way after re watching this and the avici one. it all used to be a second language. to any future producers, stick with it man. the terminology and logic will eventually feel like second nature
+Brandon Pee im just watching these for the first time rn and in awe cos im trying to understand what they are doing, hopefully i get better with time and understand this jibberish hahahaha
***** you have to go find them my asian brother!! stay positive and keep on!! you can do it!!
***** i usually like to watch a lot of artist interviews and from there you will find a lot of them. Keep that inspiration flowing!!
+Brandon Pee Haha same man :D I didn't know what i was watching, now when i see i understand everything
He is such a technical music producer, he knows a lot in detail and he knows what he is doing! Respect to Nicky Romero
He didn't hide anything, except the part with how to make the tube-sounding phaser @31:45 because it took him 1.5 hours. He encourages you to figure it out yourself. In this video he was like a teacher to me. Thank you Nicky Romero.
Please get him again, I think he's the one who I learned most from during these in the studio sessions.
Definitely.
He actually uploads his tutorials on his own channel nowadays
26:52 that moment when you see a famous dj naming his presets 'Bitch' i'm f*cking dead 😂😂😂
Roger Aydin 😊😂😂😂😂😂
Is it just me or does he remind you of robin van persie lol
Yep my thought aswell! XD
young version of Van Persie lol
He does look like van persie
Yea man!
Yeah me too! xD Fun fact Im dutch! :D
his working speed is really fast.
he is absolutely professional.
lol, i think not.
@@MrHebzO dude, you trollers only get your ass kicked everywhere.
Man, that’s not fast at all
no shit it's nicky fucking romero lol
hes just remaking his own track
Im a guitarist in a rock band but I love Nicky Romero's music! Very informative video! Thumbs Up!
As a classic rock/pop producer, i really learn from EDM producers, so diferentes aproach
24:23 Error 404. English not found.
lol
If you ever had a dream that you had you could you would you do..
Swedish house mafia has the best noise risers in the game
LMFAO😂😂😂
How to Toulouse bass:
Get massive > Get preset Modern Talking > Pitch -24 > Done.
hahahahah so true
Or 3 osc saw on all three one 0, one -12 and one -24 sounds like ERRRGGGG SKRILLEX fuck yeah WOB WOB
This comment actually inspired a video i just uploaded. check it out if you like a good laugh
thank you holy! don't take it so serious bud
I think the loop is made from toulouse
I thought the same about a swedish house mafia song, but the loop was made later
I really wanna see how Zedd produces his tracks, those are amazing. Can you put him on next time?
Creo que el hace sus canciones con instrumentos y los superpone, o eso me parece porque se nota el uso de una bateria o una guitarra
Translate that my english is a shit
I want to see the clarity......
+Daniel Santiago Gomez hahahahaaha
all his tracks are ghostproduced bruh....
Chocolate Flavoured Lasagna nah he's not ghostproduced. he's very open to talking about producing with other producers (especially Grey)
OMG!
THIS GUY HAS A CRAZY FROG PLUCHE IN HIS STUDIO!?!
MIND=BLOWN
accelerated learning, this is what it is! Thnx a million Future music for posting this!!
wow nicky is legit he don't take no samples he make dem all from scratch wow nice
Always great to see other producers making their beats, it's how we get inspired to make our own stuff with their tips and tricks,,
0:18 The toy of Crazy frog on the speakers is so cool
When I see a in the studio with skrillex or zomboy I will then be able to die in peace
Alan Taylor I like to see Zomboy XD. To see how he steals drops from Kill Rex, Skrillex, The Frim etc.
+Epix Official Lmao and skrillex isnt even that good anymore .-.
GD JoarZ I know, he never really was.
skrillex music is still great
Alan Taylor Not really. He has done like one good song and that is Ruffneck (Flex), that has original Dubstep vibes in it.
To make the axwell woosh use the es p and take the noise up and other waves to 0 and put the frequency in max, the add some modulation delay and get the feedback like -80% and Flanger - Chours at 8% and make the adjust you want to make it sound as you like
2024 anyone!? 🙌🏼🔝
Yeah
The way he spent 15 minutes making a 4 bar loop I'll never be able to do, he's a genius...
White noise on drops is a life saver hahaha
Love this video. It's so inspiring to see someone so talented at work. Taught me several new Logic tricks too! Thanks Nicky, and thanks Future Music for producing the video.
So crazy how he created this one really great track and it was such a huge leap for him. I mean i realize he existed before but this track just made his carrer.
Crazy frog 😂 over the speaker made my day 😂😂
its funny because half the producers who do this kind of video have a hard time figuring out how they made certain sounds, they usually don't remember how they did it
Nicky Romero is so good at all that "complex-professional stuff"....Really like ur music
22:21 ..genius!
I feel same
Used to be curious about becoming a DJ, mostly because it would be awesome to play in front of massive crowds, but after seeing how complicated it is... holy cow time for a wank
***** :(
A lot of great techniques and tips from Nicky Romero
"I allways have like FX at every 30 minutes..." Dude you mean seconds? :D
i wish i had a studio like this :(((((
I am not that technical when creating music but the fact I not only understand everything but can learn from it astonishes me.
Like it! Who is watching in 2020?
Me :P
he looks just like van persie ...they must be related
xD
nundi panties It's called being Dutch
nundi panties haha..i cant see that
+22calum22 Not all Dutch people look-a-like lol
nice, thanx for sharing ! No genius of super power, just master of his job ! and if you work hard, i mean diligently, result will be brilliant !
24:24 'I DOESN'T know' hahaha lmao
Lol
i dont use Logic to make my music, but this still helped me alot. : )
still watching this , what a legend dude
Best quote, "I used this plugin from Korg called the M1...... I like to use it because it's a different Piano from ones that everyone else uses"
Suddenly feeling old here hahahah. The M1 must be one of the most used synths in dance music history?
It is, it's literally in every 80s 90s Piano house track.
He means in the mainstream EDM industry
0:52 I always have my bank of Nicky Romero backgrounds that I made myself
I love how simple he keeps it...he used so many presets and pre-made patches to make such a great track.
Just awesome!
REally,, Recpect from Upeer Egypt Dude,,,~~!!!!!!
amazing to see everyones process of making these amazing tracks on Future Music, love you guys
17:57 18:10 is lowkey good
lmao he uses the default synths in logic. Good man XD
I found this presentation to be very insightful with some good entertainment value too. Much Respect Nicky Romero, you now have a new fan!
>tfw a famous producer assigns an LFO to a n.a. filter in Massive, well done.
+dipdip8 hahahahaha
+dipdip8 could you explain the joke? Im completely newbie in this matter.
Emi Izquierdo You use LFO to modulate something, if you modulate something that is bypassed, nothing happens.
+Emi Izquierdo he put an effect on something that was turned off, so it was pointless
We are not criticizing the sound, but just the setup of that filter xD nevermind ... It's like putting a trasparent glass in front of a camera, the photo will be exactly the same.
the most intelligent dj in the world but not the most famous
The last tip is the best of the video
Anyone else noticed that most European and American composers use pianos/keyboards.
You'll rarely see a guitar, violin or harp being used.
it's because the keyboard is not a real piano, it sends midi notes to the DAW, you don't see midi guitars or harps often right :D
I think it's not really the best for that setup you know, a keyboard/piano is a lot more useful with producing electronic music than a guitar for example.
Who the fuck uses a harp for anything?
I'm using guitar because i can't play piano.
18:53 turns into dubstep
That last Reverse Reverb part helped heaps since I didn't know how to do it before
Dear God the way he talks about Massive, he knows nothing about it at all.
Momentum Faux Oh, because I can only criticise something if I'm better at it? Oh please.
Yeah I guess he seems very raw, but no one knows everything when they start.
Silvarret I don't know, you can criticise it but when he's making millions each year and you're just another UA-cam commenter, I'm inclined to want to be him and not you.
hey, so long as it sounds good then it doesnt really matter overall
Silvarret Also, make sure not to criticize the president unless you're also the president too.
"Electro Fury creating Python in the studio with Future Music"
+WeekyFreaks 😃😃
Thank you so much for this Nicky and Future! :)
best producer i have ever seen :D
well its not
Watch noisias "in the studio with FM" to change your mind
manugrows or check pryda's songs and stuff. Deadmau5 rules also
m lilavE
Arnoud1987000 probably first one, cuz elder can listen to everything, but moslty to things that were hits back in their young times
lol I just realised Avicii, Martin Garrix and Nicky Romero all have the same speakers!
Rokit monitors are widely used by a lot of musicians.
OfficialBioFaze
Are these not vtx?
It feels so good when a tune comes out after spending hours........
DAT GUY AT 0:19
you make it to look so easy but it's not
he makes it sound shitter !
+Bad Banda shut the fuck up bitch! If you're an anti-fan of Nicky Romero's get the fuck out of here
It is. I didn't understand when i watched this the first time. But later i got into the music production now its all clear
Holy shit Nicky is a chill guy. Even way way cooler than I had imagined
wish logic was on windows because i cant afford a mac way too expensive
I'm surprised, this is basic producing dance music with Logic and mix it ITB with no need of mixing console or outboard gear. I was hoping to see more in depth on how these dance music producers mixing their sound using bus (group) / send to get their sound wide, deep, and compressed.. Since Nicky using lots of pre-build samples so he don't need much processing on each track except comp for side chaining. Just a low cut EQ and Distortion for color/saturation
If i'm not mistaken.. Swedish House Mafia did real tracking with mixer console in recording studio.
and for the classic reverse reverb part.. he can just do 'Bounce to a new track' to make it simple and ready on a new track..
But, at the end of the day how you mix & master the track is more important to deliver the sound character you need.. :)
You're right that's because in big room/house... tracks you don't need to be superskilled with mixing and sounddesign. The most difficult genres are drum and bass and brostep
+Never Say Die and even if it is that easy, I'm having trouble making musics haha
+Aldy Waani Colour/saturation? This ain't Photoshop
+DenTube you should learn more before you speak
0:19 jesus christ that guy in the back scared the shit out of me with the light and stuff..
Yeah sure, he made all those samples himself right :P
hes on looperman 24/7
noah weijenberg Haha looperman FTW will I use looperman a lot but only for ideas
Logic pro looks so much more clean then fl studio and ableton live.
Derpa Herpa FL doesn't have a specific workflow, so things can get super messy really easily. Not sure about what he means by Ableton, but it's just his preference. Not hating on FL or anything, it's a really good program.
it depend of people, it's personal
Nicky Romero Toulouse 2020🔥🎵✅
So Nicky is also a sound designer?
obviously
m lilavE /facepalm
he also developed plugins...which is great..
It's just a volume automator.... In essence a compressor for dummies.
*****
kickstart is actually a sidechain plugin. :D
people have different music tastes. don't shit on someone for what they like. JFC
Now i know why his tracks always sound the same,,, but they are always hot!!
he has a good combination of talent and intellect. I was rockin this track from his mixshow last summer ...just makes me want to drift.... Great video
I've watched several of these videos and you always see these guys sitting at a computer saying they just made or created something and playing it back. I call bullshit. Let's see them actually making a beat or playing pads or a keyboard. These are all samples made by someone else.
Well you can see him playing the chords at 22:24 . Also in most of the future music videos they are mostly for the artist to go through a song they already released and explain their process in making it, not to make a entirely new song.
Braden Morra He even played his own thing wrong.
DubpleRW you don't need to be a good performer to make a cool melody
dunkel000 Look at the rest of this comment section. He receives a ridiculous amount of hate. Just seeing how he can't play his extremely easy thing which he has produced some time ago explains why he receives all this hate. He doesn't know shit.
26:52 preset name: Bitch
+Nasso hahah damn mannn... so sikckkk
lol yeah
What I take from these FM's is
1) it Demystifies these great works, these guys aren't reinventing the wheel. You cant make these songs at home
2) The importance of the blend
3) A lot of playing around and presets when u find what you like
4) The little nuances, (white noise, layered kicks) gives it that feel.
5) FIND A KILLER SYNTH AND CRANK IT!
25:30 - Staccato* Funny how big EDM producers don't have a shred of knowledge about music theory at all. Kind of urks me. If these people actually took about an hour to google about music theory, they'd make far better tracks, musically. Lol.
Still, interesting to see how others produce. The guitar synth is pretty cool, show's you don't need expensive crap to make good sounds!
Which program is the best for making tracks for windows is it fl studio or are the better ones
fl studio is the best
It depends on how you like to work. No DAW is better than another, it's just what you used to and what you want in a DAW.
Which do you prefere
Jasper Both if your a beginner fl studio if you know what ur doing ableton
shaskool2142 Mabey. I was able to pick up the basics of Abelton very quickly but I found it impossible to work out how to use FL Studio.
You can use 3xOsc for creating White noise, it's in FLS as default and you just select the noise shape (looks like .wave sound) for all 3 oscilliators, then choose a note and extract it to min. 1:00:000.
Then Assign it to a free mixer track and add a fruity free filter. Set "Q" to 1, type stay as low pass, Freq set as something around 300 Hz, then create an automation clip from Freq and set the right point to something between 5 & 10 and the left as around 80 and there you go :)
- ColdfireDM :)
Like si eres Español y no entiendes una mierda XD
Moises Miranda espanol es dificil, ingles es facil. :(
+Moises Miranda (“Moisesmsgamer”) joder no entiendo nada de que hasta diciendo :(
+Moises Miranda “Moisesmsgamer” like :v
Ok. I took a dirty bass from massive and ran it through ohmicide for distortion. Then I ran noise through a separate bus, ran it through a preset in fab filter, added distortion, and now I have a bass that sounds just like this guys. I also added a bit of swing to the end of the bass, compressed it with a kick, added sausage fatner, and I got a groovy fucking kick / bass line going. Almost as good as this guys. This is part of the reason I don't like this style of music. Its too simple and easy to copy.
Ok, now try to be original.
90% of EDM is rehashed from other music. Romero himself admitted to copying 3 different songs and combining them together.
Robert Cece
1. You call "house music" "Edm", you are probably american and too young to understand.
2.Get inspired dont copy. Did you hear toulousse somewhere else before?
3. All you american people want to be famous and copy what you think sounds good, but you dont understand the philosophy and emotion behind it, When something hits the mainstream you distroy it
Robert Cece EDM is the term used, that people like you can categorize.
EDM means "Electronic Dance Music".
Show me a view of your records.
***** "hardstyle, trance, drum & bass and alot more styles" are the genres, "EDM" is the term that mainstream news needed, to talk about it all as one.
excellent video .. guys .. am dj and live in the state of sao paulo in Brazil. too short and the productions of nicky romero ... and now he's showing his techniques in the studio of producer .. very good .... hugs strong FM (Y) :)
Kygo in the studio
Yeeees
+Yago RG that would be pretty boring actually. No offense but he has simple melodies and uses Apple Music Samples and just puts it together
+Simonutd 99 I still love him though
Nice IdZZzzzzz
jesus christ this looks complicated lol
But in the end it pays off, you can make a track and call it your own. Yep, making your own music is awesome
Frank Stein
Depends on what you call music.
Phil Perry If you decide to call what you make music then so be it. Who am i to say it's not, after all i didn't make it.
This actually isn't complicated if you have enough skills :)
these dutch guys have so much talent
Logic looks very slow to work in compared to Ableton
It's not. I use both Logic 9 and Ableton 9. Logic is excellent when it comes to mastering.
However it's down to producer preference. A lot of people love fl studio for working with, Savant, Deadmau5 etc...
jamie miller
mixing is a pain on fl, Deadmau5 sometimes uses fl for getting an idea down quick but he produces on ableton
jamie miller
A nd mastering is just putting plugins on your final mixed down wav, how could Logic be excellent at that?
FL studio is the best imo. I cant do shit in ableton lol, own prefrence though
*****
you got to learn it, .All DAWs are the same at the end of the day
"I created this..."
"I created this..."
"I created this..."
Yeah right... U dont even know how to use massive propertly
***** nope but im not a million $ producer eighter
***** Massive is like the easiest thing out there. I love how he doesn't know it :P
Yeah and you can't fucking spell properly
DJ Dextek At that point in time he had just recently bought it, that why he seemed like a noob
Since when does knowing how to use massive decide if you are a good producer?
Just finished watching. Thanks to all involved with this video. I've learned tons.
computer a bunch of used presets + silly synth FLsounds + other´s samples + loops + frequencies plugg ins = edm
ZsnipeX ZSM he did as he said
Bvm yuuuueww que uyuyuuyyy yo
Jorge Guerrero Belive me or not pop and rap has the same problem. Stop the EDM hate bullsh!t!
RAVENDDD1 exactly. edm is just pop.
a
He uses GarageBand XD
Nah, it's Logic 9, very good piece of kit
How fast his workflow is, it's maddening.
So he's a "musician" and he doesn't even play an instrument, but people but millions of records...what the fuck is wrong with this generation
yeh he writes all the chords the melodies millions of people buy his records because he is a great producer producing is very very hard
as a producer it just tells how retarded you all are
ITS NOT TALENT? PUT YOUR ASS IN SOMEONE ELSE SHOES THEN MAKE YOUR BLOODY STATEMENT!!!
ZAZE hamuna93 yeah he's a producer. He's certainly not a musician. Millions of people but "lil wayne" records and definitely don't consider him a great musician
ShatteredDimensionz literally tens of thousands of starting producers try to become as good as him but cant but anyone who wants to start a rock band just has to learn to play an instrument which anyone can do not everyone can produce you have to have a certain spark and ear for energy dont look down on producers they do what all your rock bands do but instead of sitting with a guitar they sit at there desk with a midi keyboard and write the chords melodies etc they all understand music theory all of it they just cant play the instrument very well as they dont have time to learn as they have to produce
***** how does one "perform" this kind of music? It's a guy that gets on stage and plays his damn iPod and dances around acting like he's doing something.
He doesn't even know what he's saying.
and still he's an dj who have been on tomorrowland several times and have many millions. so he doesn't need to know what he's saying because he sure know what he's doing
I'm sorry, did I say something wrong?
Phillip Zhong Do you even know what he's saying?
lasse bjørnstad So worldwide fame and making millions of dollars is what music is about these days? Last time I checked music was a tool used to express emotion. If fame and money is a high priority, you shouldn't be making music, that's just a disgrace.
Sure he knows a fair amount and knows a few tricks, but in the end he is just another asshole who got popular with money and promotion not with talent or skill.
And why are you guys raging on Phillip? He shared his opinion and you guys just ripped him apart, music is about connecting with people, and that is something you guys are just missing by a long shot.
If you wish to respond to this comment, do so with as much of a pissy attitude as possible, I love to see assholes express their anger, just makes me even happier.
bro him and dyro knows lots of things about producing the problem is that he is dutvh and he can't explain to u everything cuz he is hezitatting and it's not his first language
This pro djs are really good at what they do, respect.
doesn't matter which software he use, it's important to come with the right idea.
a master piece ! nicky romero mis respect!!
"I think I was too lazy 2 do that at the time" lmao that shit had me ROLLIN. 39mins in.
I've been trying to make music so much and failing but somehow this inspired me to keep trying
