Also…don’t wear a pocket knife. We got stopped in Mexicali by the local police. They took our knives and placed them in the back of our rigs. They said that pocket knives cannot be within arms reach while driving.

Thats BS on the part of the police. You are allowed to have a pocket knife in your car.
They were just giving you a hard time being foreigners. But better to go along with it and a mile later you can take it out.

Baja is amazing, safe, and has great food. I am surprised more people don't overland there. Watch out for the topes though! Some of the speedbumps make the Rubicon trail feel like a cakewalk! :-P Just kidding.....

My father is a retired Colonel in the mexican army, I grew up with the military and these tips have always helped me go through military checkpoints:
When coming to a military Check point:
    Roll down your Windows
    Turn off your headlights
    Turn on your inside lights
Be courteous with the Military personnel
When asked, state where you come from and where you are going.
It is customary for military personnel to ask you what you do for a living, just answer.
If they tell you they will perform a routine revision, do not refuse.

Marco, I really love this planning video. I have been wanting to go, but my non justified fear for not going was previously influenced by media reports and some bad apples seen in the news. Your outings and video experience has been very helpful. I am close to convincing my wife and hope to go down this year. Thank you very much. Much love my friend.

Not if you are only driving in the Baja peninsula, Baja and Baja sur are consider Free Zone, which means as a tourist you do not require vehicle permits
