Hey brother ! so today my 735 arrived as my 734 just made the Montana border on it's way to Helena and its new home. My best friend wanted it and I wanted to up grade and also went with the helico cutter blades. I ran in after getting it mounted on the stand that is made to fit both. Then I came in a nd rewatched your set up video and went to set it all up. I spent the last 30 years as a union perscion Millwright so I had a clue. After set up it took on some hickory and some quilted maple. It did great . My helico will arrive in a week or so and I will go back to you for install. Love your video's and I can hear your voice very well unlike others. Stay cool, you be the Man !!!

Just bought one of these used. For the Dewalt in particular you can set the feed speed lever in the middle (essentially neutral) and rotate the feed rollers by hand.
Love this series! You are absolutely correct that we should give all of our equipment some periodic, regular TLC. We oftentimes neglect to 'tune' and clean each and every piece in our shop. The investment in time pays off 10-Fold! Thanks for all the GREAT tips!
Pro tip: Many levels have magnetic strips. Lay one on each side of the planer bed extending over whichever feed you are adjusting. Levels will hold the feed for you while you tighten!

Newbie watching this, please could you explain what you mean a bit more? struggling to get this level and not sure how to use these magnetic level strips
@@gylesdias2900 loosen the 4 screws, place level across the planer bed magnet side down ensuring the magnetic part is touching the bed and out/infeed table. tighten screws, repeat on opposite side. I ended up adding a bit of an angle to both sides but same process.

I’ve been using ceramic auto exterior protectant on my metal surfaces and it has been working better than the paste wax I was using before
Hullo young man. You and your wife are now starting a new phase of your life together with the arrival of a little girl. The lunch box thicknessers we have over here are more like timber mincer's. We use mostly a machine that is a combined planer (jointer) and a thicknesser underneath. Then again we use metric and you use feet and inches. You sent a man to the moon with a pencil, paper and using feet and inches (a rocket as well) Love to all the family BIG GUY.
AAAAHHH! Wish I would have seen this video earlier. I went from changing blades, cleaning rollers, waxing table, heating up my shop, thinking keyed gears were broken...the big problem was a misaligned infeed table. Just milled about 20BF of cherry like a boss. Thanks, man. Now I can finish building that moxon from your other video.
I just enjoy watching these vids about adjusting the infeed and out feed shelves. It doesn't dawn on these geniuses that the planer comes set up from the factory. Leveling these shelves only enhances the snipe. The planer has two rollers. If you are having snipe. Simply lift slightly up on the out feed side of the board as it comes off the front roller and this will greatly lesson the snipe. If you do what this "expert" suggests. You will definitely improve your SNIPE. Guaranteed. Leave it alone and enjoy planing
On the 735 I don't think the infeed and outfeed tables are supposed to be exactly level. They're supposed to be level where it meets the main planer bed, but they're supposed to incline the further out you get. This is supposed to simulate the tilting of the board trick that further helps to reduce (eliminate?) snipe. I definitely noticed a difference in snipe after making this adjustment on mine.
Good idea! I’m definitely gonna try that...my planer leaves really bad snipe. I made the planer sled and it works well but it’s a pain to use.
You are correct! I'm surprised JKM hasn't corrected his video with this information or acknowledged it in the description. The tables came set this way from the factory for a reason!

No matter how i adjusted my out/in feeds i get snipe with this planer…disappointing to say the least. I have only found one way to eliminate snipe, use a long straight board resting on feed arms but then my height gauge is useless without doing math.
Just bought a new planner. Have to get it calibrated. Perfect timing for this video! thank you.
The blades for the 735 are NOT made be sharpened per manufacturer. You may be able to hone them but they are indexed to the cutter head so the height adjustments changes slightly. 2 things will affect planer performance when you try to sharpen the knives. Additionally, if the knives are not sharpened exactly the same amount the quality of the surface will be compromised. Washboard and increased snipe will result. Good video.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND ANOTHER THANK YOU. I am waiting on a new belt and a set of sprockets for my DW 735. Even though the belt does not seem worn and the sprockets are fine. The problem I am trying to correct is the feed rollers are not doing their job. Now I watching you, and your chain on the opposite side that I am on and then I hit me like a ton of bricks, My problem is on this side. So I jump up, remove the three screws and find the BROKEN SPROCKETS. Thank you, Jonathan, you are the only one that shows this side when cleaning the planner.

Thanks for making this. I have the slanted board issue. I was able to minimize it but haven’t been able to eliminate it. I do flip the board but have had times I lose track of which side is the high side lol. But at least I know now not to drive myself crazy trying to get it perfect

I love this upload. My new Harbor Freight Baur planer has horrible snipe right out of the box. I watched that video of the one piece you mentioned someone else made but I am going to try and adjust my flip tables prior to building a unit. Thanks for the info.
So does this one even after playing with countless adjustment settings to the in/out feeds.
All I can say is take your in feed and out feed tables and angle them most of the way up! I got rid of snipe that way. Does it happen still? Yes, but with long stock, If you don't grab it at end and lift up a bit, when end goes past first roller, it will tilt UP into the blade and that last 2" or so will snipe. Also supporting it at an angle going in helps alot -I use a roller stand which angles things like a 1/8" to 1/4" as things enter the planer. When you get to final thickening, you'll want to know this. I've spent too many hours chasing snipe and thickness to give a crap anymore. I hate it, but when I get it right, so nice.

Hi very nice presentation. I have a 13 inch dewalt thickness planer. Let’s say I have three pieces of 2X4 and each one them is 2-7/16 , 2-3/8, and 2-5/16 how do I make all three of them being 2-5/16 without manually measuring them. I appreciate your input. Thanks
Started sharpening the blades on my 735 as I am using it to take about 1mm off 25 year old Merbau decking surrounding a pool. After about 100 linear feet the blades are dull and coated with a horrid sap an need cleaning and sharpening. 2 minutes on some 800 grit paper will clean and sharpen the blades enough to get another 100 feet of boards through it. Only sharpened once, but many people say they get 2-3 sharpens before they have to toss the blades
Blades here are US$70+ a set, but I have some non genuine blades arriving to test their longevity and hopefully save me some $

@@BarrySumpter the knockoff blades work well and along with sharpening the blades I can use the plainer for hours with no issue, swapping blades every hour or two.

Remove the cover on the hand wheel side. The v belt pulley is held with a 24 mm nut. It is low profile and has neither a lock washer nor nylon lock. Inspect it. If it loosens (the machine vibrates a lot right?) the pulley will wobble the belt will melt and the pulley gets ruined. Oh you’ll definitely know this is beginning if the feed rollers are running but the cutter head isn’t.
You left out step one - get a planer if you dont have one!

The Wen manual says the infeed and outboard sides should be about 1mm higher than the cutting table...why would that be? It looks like you are making them perfectly flat across which seems to make more sense. Thank you!

Since you are already using Glidecoat, why do you use a pastewax on the bottom surface? I've been using Glidecoat on the bottom for years with great success. Other than that mystery (to me), great video.

Your first mistake was adjusting it. It comes set up from the factory. A lot of these so called experts don't know anything about the planer and they think they need to have the infeed and out feed shelves level with the bed? That is totally bogus. You greatly enhance the snipe by doing that. Leave it alone. If you have leveled it then go back and slightly elevate each side until the snipe is minimal. Listen to this guy and yur guaranteed snipe

What about deep grooves in the bed? I do my wood working outdoors and didn't notice little rocks stuck to the boards and it gouged the bed.
I realize this video was made a couple of years ago, but I recently was given a DW733 when my father-in-law passed away. He left it in an outside shed (for about 8 years is the family estimate) and there is rust in many places. I'm going to buy some replacement blades and try to clean the rust off the roller they mount to, but I was wondering if you have any other suggestions/warnings to help me try to get this planer back on line. Thanks for everything you have shared and taught me.
Some day I have this tool on my list to buy. I hope to have it in November. Can you do a video on how to use it? Or do you have one? I have seen lots of people use one. But they don't go over how too.

The snipe on this planer is caused by the rollers, not the extension tables. The only way to eliminate snipe is to use a sacrificial board. If I have room on the side, I attach mine there. If I don't, then I just run one before and after the board I am planing.
Do you put the sacrificial board into the planer directly in front of the product-board?
@@SteveBossie Normally, my sacrificial board is attached to the board I am planing so that it sticks out each end by 3 inches. I normally use two. One on each side of the board I'm planing. The only time I can't do this is when the board im planing requires the entire width of the planer, which almost never happens.
To attach the boards, I use tape and CA glue, tape and hot glue, or I just wood glue the boards directly. I normally remove them with the tablesaw if glued directly.
Trying to put a sacrificial board in front and behind the planed piece doesn't always work, and requires you to hurry, so the attachment method is much better.
The boards I attach are normally thin strips cut on the tablesaw from scrap, and they are thicker than the project piece. If I am running a longer piece through the planer, then I don't cut pieces the entire length. I cut pieces and attach at each end only.

Thanks for sharing. This can be a silly question. I assume there is only one motor in a thicknesser which dives both the cutting block and the feeding rollers. Obviously they rotate at significantly different speeds so there should be a high ratio reduction gear somewhere. How is it maintained, periodic engine oil change? Correct me if this is wrong. I know this is an old post but I was wondering if its possible when you replace the rollers in a 735 dewalt to reverse them. Front in rear and rear in front and if they can what would it do? Thanks in advance for the answer.

Hi. I love your videos and find your method of explanation to be very clear and helpful. I have a question for you about my Dewalt 735 planer. I bought it used and I didn't notice in the dark of the garage the gouges on the planer bed. I used it for the first time the other day and in order to avoid scratches in my wood, I used MixWax finishing paste wax and my files to get rid of the high spots of the gouges. It seemed to work. I applied multiple layers of the wax but still feel the cuts in the metal. It seems to have done the trick. Is there another method that might work better?

HELP! My brand new DW 735 does not plane evenly across the width of a 12 1/2” cutting board glue up. If I reverse, as you mention in the beginning of this video, my board is left thicker in the center than the edges. This is a big problem when cutting into 1 1/4” thick pieces for end grain cutting boards. I’ve taken close measurements and the cutting head is not parrell to the bed. Can you point me in the right direction for adjusting? Thanks
I made a long bed for my Dewalt planer, using 3/4” plywood, and I air-spray my planer out after every use. My problem is that I’m getting an uneven cut from one side to another. I can’t tell if the rollers are parallel with the bed, but something is messed up in there. Any ideas?

Hi, I recently bought a used DeWalt planer and went to change the blade and the screw on the top is just spinning. I got the other 3 out. I can't pry up because it's recessed. Any thoughts?
I disagree with your advice on adjusting the cutterhead to be parallel. That said, my planer is not a DeWalt 735, and it may be different for that planer. Mine is a Delta 22-555. It was fairly significantly out of parallel with the table. If one follows your recommendation to simply turn the board around, won't you wind up with a crown in the middle of the board? At any rate, I disassembled my planer and got the cutterhead to within .003 " over the 13" length of the cutterhead of being parallel. I used 1-2-3 blocks and feeler gauges. It took me about an hour and a half to do that, which was significantly less time than correcting the thickness difference in six pieces of walnut that I had cut for use in two bedside tables. I also took the opportunity to give it a good cleaning and lubricated screws and guide rods. Vertical adjustment is now much smoother and noise free.
Great review / tip video. I'm planning to buy a thickness planer but i don't know which brand to buy. I doubt between the Makita and the dewalt. Are you happy with this dewalt and do you recommend him?

I have the Dewalt it's a great planer and comes with a extra set of knives. Don't mess with trying to "level it" n you will be fine. It comes set up from the factory. All you need to do is wax or seal the bed and begin planing. That simple
Love your vids Jonathan, keep up the good work. I just tuned up my old DW733 in the hopes to eliminate the snipe I'm getting. I also added an MDF sled and still getting snipe on both ends of a board. Any idea with might be causing this?
Yes. Leveling the in feed and out feed as he suggested definitely increases the snipe. Go back to the original position of the tables. They need to be slightly elevated from the bed. Adjust until most of the snipe is gone. If you still have a slight bit then simply lift up slightly on the out feed board as it passes the front roller and you will have minimal snipe which can be eliminated by sanding. Listen to the this other suggestion and yur doomed to snipe hell!!

I have this planer and it generates an enormous amount of static which I assume is from the wood chips bouncing around the attached vacuum hose. When I open the cyclone bucket afterwards the chips are bouncing around like popcorn! I tried grounding the hose wire to a machine screw in the back of the unit, but it doesn't seem to do much. Any tips you can think of, let me know!
I have the same issue...get a static shock each time I disconnect the hose.
i ran a bare copper 14ga. wire from a piece of romex THRU the middle of the flex tube & ground it to the catch can, if metal.. if plastic ? im not sure... i hope it helps you..

When is DeWalt going to come out with this model that has a helical head already installed? Come on DeWalt, get with the times!
I had my 735 for 3 days. Took it back. Worst snipe I've ever had on a planer, and I've been using shop planers since my first one (Makita 10" ) back in 1980, regardless how I fed the material. This machine also ate blades. Less than 10 minutes planing clean pine 2x8's and the blades were rendered unusable and that was while taking less than 1/16" on a pass, about 1/2 turn on the handle. Switch is in a terrible location, nothing to keep a board from hitting it and turning the machine off when sliding a board across the top and positioning it to refeed it. Then there is the chip exiting the machine at 200+ mph. There needs to be a way to disconnect the blower to be able to just have the chips drop into a receptacle. And lastly, as if this wasn't enough, the power cord is on the wrong side of the machine, creating a tripping hazard unless you do some magical rerouting. Back to using my 25 year old Ryobi AP13 which still performs remarkedly well after a million miles of use.
Thanks for the tips. I have one of these and was just getting ready to do a tune up for the summer. With this planner, do you have some slop in the hand crank wheel? Mine has a little although it generally holds it's height just fine. Just looking to compare it to another to see if I am imagining something or if it is within tolerance.
Get the wixey digital height gauge. It'll give you piece of mind
My planer is a Ridgid and I'd like to know if the rollers can be tightened or adjusted. I thought I noticed, when passing a board, the rollers move up in a spring like motion and leave a 4 inch long snipe.
I'm not familiar with that one. I would look up the instruction manual

This is the DW735, the 734 is the more traditional lunchbox style planner with 2 posts while the 735 is a four post.
Anyone reading this late after the fact. 735 hands down.

I have this same planer.. and I get intense static shock from the chip port. I have tried wrapping wire around it to ground it and it’s helped a little. I’m concerned there is a short in the blower fan. Does anyone know a source to speak to a dewalt rep or an avenue to fix this. I’m tired of getting shocked. Or watching the hair on my arm stand on end when I’m near it..
More grounding maybe. Closer to your dust collector?
Same here. It's not an electrical issue; it's just static charge from all the chips blowing through the plastic dust port. Grounding wires wrapped around the ducting will help carry some charge to ground, but you'll still get an occasional shock.
Judy attach an alligator clip to your hose wire the other end to the base. That will dissipate your static charge.
My planer is displaying the problem you addressed initially, planning out of square. You mentioned that there is no simple fix for this. However, I deal with very close clearances in my work and passing it through again is not really a good option, I am determined to fix it. Have you ever attempted fixing this? Any advice would help. You'll need to rotate the screws at one end of the machine. On the DeWalt 735 there are two screws on each end - most lunchbox planers have one screw per side. Anyway, give the screw or screws on one side a quarter turn and see if the problem gets better or worse. It's a fiddly process of trial and error and some tools are easier to adjust than others. See if your manual has detailed instructions.

I HAVE A QUESTION. THERE IS A PART, THE CUTTER HEAD LOCK LEVER. IT HAS A SPRING AND IS ADJUSTABLE UP AND DOWN. IF YOU TIGHTEN IT, IT DOESNT’ MOVE, LOOSEN IT AND IT WORKS UP AND DOWN WITH THE SPRING. AT WHAT POSITION ARE YOU TO TIGHTEN THE SCREWS. DOES THE BRACKET NEED TO BE UP OR DOWN. DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR ANSWER.
Lock lever goes back into normal open position when the dust collector is bolted back on
It's basically a safety lock out item. With cover off you need to press down to rotate the 3 straight blades when servicing them. Simples

Pro tip: last time I was cleaning under my blades on the cutter head my intelligent self ran my finger down the blade and it’s so sharp I cut myself down the whole 12.5 inches and was bleeding before I realized what was happening
