EDventures * did you have to lower the engine to get the pulley off? Other videos I've seen shows them lowering the engine but you never mention it. I don't want to mess with doing that if I don't have to!
Richard Long Yes I removed the two motor mount bolts under the car up front and the motor mount on passenger side up top. No other way to get pulley off unfortunately.
Yes definitely. Not a lot more money and it pays to not have to take it apart to change it later. I also replaced the timing belt tensioner. I bought a kit that had pump, belt and tensioner all in it.
I have a 2010 journey 3.5 V6 and she seems to be leaking from the bottom, center, back of engine. Any tips on what the leak may be? My wife noticed the steam coming out from the passenger side of the hood. I tried investigating and all I could see was what looked to be from underneath and in the back of engine Thanks
Yes it was a small leak from water pump, but it also had a blown head gasket i assume from the previous owner driving it when hot. My sister bought it a week prior and they sold her a lemon. It has been running great now. Her husband has been driving it ever since i repaired it for them. I is not an easy project but it is doable if you got the tools. One trick is look where the idler pulley bolt is and get a hole saw or drill bit bigger than the bolt and drill a hole in the frame cage there. The bolt is too long to get out without doing that even dropping the engine down is not enough to get beyond frame. Only other option is to lift engine almost out of the car which i did not intend to do. Drilling the hole saves a lot of time.It is also wise to get a new timing belt to replace as that is what turns the water pump. That will save you a future headache since most of them need replacing after 100,000 miles. It is required to remove it. The pump i bought came with a new belt and belt tensioner. Cost a little more money but trust me you only want to do this work once.
What happened with my sister's Journey was you coul see a rust line under the pump where it was leaking. I fixed that but due to someone driving without water cause the corner og a head gasket to blow. Luckily the aluminum head did not crack. That leak was difficult to find. I just had a hunch once i put it all back together and it was still leaking that it was a head gasket or cracked head. I tore the whole thing apart twice.
shawna rudd Yes it is not that difficult. It is on the right side if you are standing in front looking at the engine. There are two 10mm bolts that hold the thermostat housing on. I found it easier to remove the hoses that are attached to it first to get to the bolts. Thermostat was about $16.
@EDventures* Hey Ed, I just recently got a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT and my tensioner pulley would not budge an inch. I had to remove the idler pulley just to remove my belt, vice versa. Recently, my car gave me an coolant temperature warning, and I think I might have to change the water pump if it isn't the coolant temperature sensor. History wise, I've already changed the alternator, thermostat, and EGR Valve (+Tube). I also noticed that my coolant reserver likes to overflow, even though I have the coolant line at the specified line. My question to you is, if I can't remove the tensioner pulley, will I still be able to access and remove the timing chain.
@@Living_EDventures I can remove the idler pulley, but I cannot adjust the tensioner pulley, because it has locked up. This journey has allot of rusting issues. The tensioner pulley is locked up so tight that the bolt slips on a 15mm. I've used tensioner pulley wrench's and it still isn't moving or coming lose. I've sprayed the tensioner pulley lightly with blaster, no results.
@@Living_EDventures remember that I can remove the serpentine belt, by removing the idler pulley. What I'm wondering is will I have to remove all of the pulleys to access the water pump?
@@kepheramanjet3244 It has been a couple years since i did it. I think yes all the pulley need to be removed to get the inspection cover off. Sounds like you need a new tensioner too. I had to take the front bottom motor mount off and the belt side top motor mount off to lower the engine to get some of the stuff off.
Ed so I do motors and transmission all the time never tried to do a water pump with the timing belt so what do I use to mark the timing marks ? Paint markers and do I use any gasket sealer on the new pump ?
It has notches on the cam gears and on the upper timing housing, also on the crank and lower timing housing. I did not use sealant as it has rubber o-ring gasket on the pump. You could use a thin bead if you wanted to.
EDventures * I didn’t kno u was from mi I’m from Detroit cool beans but when aligning them timing marks how should I do it crank first or the cams cuz I heard u can messed the valves up
I aligned the marks with the belt still on then changed it. One cam gear will move when you take the tensioner off, but will religned once you put the tensioner back on. I replaced the timing belt and tensioner also since it had over 100k miles on it. This is my sister's car.
The video is helpful with one exception. You casually mention loosening the engine belt tensioner. That looks impossible on mine. There is about 1/2 in. clearance between the tensioner and the frame. What technique or tool combination do you use to loosen the tensioner bolt?
Welcome to the inquiry about the temperature of the engine Dodge Gearny 2013 in the summer conditions at the temperature of the air 50C in Iraq. When the operation of the air conditioner rises the temperature of the engine up to 120 c. All the Dodge cars. Is there a solution to this .. And thank you
There are a few companies that make a product you add to your anti-freeze coolant that will lower engine temperature a few degrees. One is called Water Wetter. Red Line Racing Lubricants makes one, also Royal Purple racing Lubricants make one. I know there are other companies that do as well. My cousin used to use it in his race car when he ran gasoline instead of alcohol.
Yeah I wish I could remove it. It was something I did at Christmas time. Didn't realize how annoying it was at the time. Appreciate you watching and thanks for the feedback.
I said 3.9 in the video, but it was a 3.5 as the video title says.
How can you worki in the snow

Richard Long Yes I removed the two motor mount bolts under the car up front and the motor mount on passenger side up top. No other way to get pulley off unfortunately.
Did you went ahead and change the time belt also??
Yes definitely. Not a lot more money and it pays to not have to take it apart to change it later. I also replaced the timing belt tensioner. I bought a kit that had pump, belt and tensioner all in it.
@@Living_EDventures Nice, I've changed timing belt before and its kinda nerve wracking. Had to make sure everything is line up.
Yes sir, better to do it while apart rather than have break and destroy things.
You said 3.9 engine but, the title shows 3.5?
Awesome video. Thanks a lot.
Neil Williams Yeah I said it wrong, it is a 3.5 H.O.
Thanks for pointing that out

Happy New Year ED! I Enjoyed watching watching you change toy water pump brother. Good job: might need your skill set sometime lol
I'd be happy to help. I do everything myself. From mechanical to home repair
Does anyone show how to do a thermostat for this year and model

Did you lower the motor just to remove the harmonic balancer??
If i remember right i had to to get the pulley for the serpentine belt off.

Why can't you remove the pulley? Is it because you can not get the bolt out because it hits the side of frame/body?
Also it is a timing belt not a chain

You have to lower the engine by taking motor mount off. The upper mount and lower mount.
There also may be a special tool you can rent, but I found having to raise and lower the engine to get certain bolts out.
EDventures * what did you raise it with? Engine hoist?
@@reybigg811 Floor jack under the oil pan
EDventures * do you know the torque amount for the engine mount bolts?
Thank you

I can see a lot of people benefiting from this video. I'll have to show a timing belt soon on my Nissan Frontier. Stay connected. :)
Thanks

Thank you very much but where do you get such a cooling solution? I use Ac Dilco coolant but also warm the engine with air conditioner ..
You can purchase it at auto parts stores here, but you could search it on Google I'm sure and purchase online.
That fake snow crap has got to go.
