I grew up speaking AAVE and I was an excellent student, went to an excellent college, and now work in Corp. I continue to speak AAVE with family and friends and code switch at work. I choose to speak AAVE because that is my nature way of speaking. Most of my professional black friends also speak AAVE and code switch at work.
You are absolutely correct. It was not my intention to make it seem as though my way of speaking is solely based on my education level. As someone who also has to tap in to code switching on occasion, I totally get you. My apologies if any bit came off as offensive. I think the way I sound is much more based off of my parents and where/how they grew up as opposed to anything else.

this is your second video I watch, for the first 20 mins or so I thought you sounded white but it didn't add up with the literal logo of three black men right in the middle of the screen XD edit after watching: to clarify, personally the skin color of an individual is as important as the color of their eyes. As a latino I've been "complimented" on my normal sounding accent so this video hits home for me
It’s interesting how different people’s minds work. Not to toot my own horn, but I feel like there were lot of context clues that helped me get to the correct conclusion.
13:18 I got a similar comment IRL a couple weeks ago. This little girl working the door, looked at me and asked, "how old are you? Because your deep voice doesn't match your kid face." I still feel some type of way about that. That is by far the strangest way to tell someone that they got a baby face. And of course, like everyone else does, she dropped her jaw to the floor when I told her how old I am
I would just like to add that for it isn't 'speaking well' that makes someone sound "white", the White American accent is sometimes this LACK of an accent. It's a very neutral North American English pronunciation. Living in NYC I've heard people speak extremely well but some pronunciations make it clear that they're from New York, same as Boston. When someone articulates well, like a news anchor it becomes harder to pick up dialectical differences and that sounds 'white' to many people. When I first heard you I thought you were White but I think after the Schultz video I was like nah, this is a Black man.

I'm often told I don't sound black because I'm "articulate" and "poised". People sometimes don't believe I'm born n raised in NYC. Ironically, I didn't think you were black at first either. I thought you were Asian but it wasn't because of you how you speak or words you choose, I originally found the tone of your voice and some of your inflections to remind me of that I'd hear from Asian men I've met along the way. Once I heard you say the "n" word though, I realized oh, he's a brother lol.
Scary how they always act genuinely flabbergasted too lol. Had a co-worker I had only talked to virtually before meeting in person say "but you're so well spoken."

Early comment but, the push ups trick in insanely good. I started doing it cause I was bored and it's a good reward system. The first couple of times it is annoying but after that it becomes kinda addicting
You will notice that critical thinking skills are lacking from people who aren't actively curious about learning. To imply educated black people are few and far between is crazy and I enjoy your takes even when I don't agree. It allows me to think critically
To be honest I thought you were non black because of the way you sound but then I looked at your profile picture and that answered my question. It’s funny because I get the same thing lol. People think I’m non black based on the way I speak. I grew up in watts/south central L.A (The hood). People would assume I grew up in a “white” neighborhood.

The idea of someone coming to the vidoe from that link 8:35 and getting to this part 😂😂
😂😂
Early comment but, the push ups trick in insanely good. I started doing it cause I was bored and it's a good reward system. The first couple of times it is annoying but after that it becomes kinda addicting
Nah fr! If I go to long without doing them, it feels weird now. It’s changed a lot!
I didn't assume you were white, but before I saw you in livestream form, the picture I had in my head of you was the comedian Josh Johnson. You've got a similar voice and similar humor, IMO
