And I just realised that Interstellar, The Martian AND Saving Private Ryan involve saving Matt Damon lol.
Did you know that Matt Damon needed help in space long before that turns out he had a ring that had a map that led to his ship that could build an entire planet (titan a.e.)
Lol
And they are all excellent movies
Just watched Saving Private Ryan and I wanted to watch something sci-fi and apparently Matt Damon is still needing to be saved
EXACTLY
This is like the origin story of Matt Damon's character from interstellar lol
+Brandon J (NotePine) Everyone has cracked this joke thinking they're the ones that came up with it. Quit it. It's boring.
+Lawliet Jayson i apologize I didn't see other comments stating this. I didn't mean to duplicate a comment that had already been stated, I was just expressing my opinion on a public comment board. I'm sorry my comment bored you 😕
+Brandon J (NotePine) Lol you copied that joke, everyone is saying it.
+TOXiK COOKiE I didn't know I did sorry. Humans are capable of coming up with there own ideas and sometimes those ideas have already been thought of. I apologize if my comment has caused so much trolling in your life.
Brandon J Your comment is invalid, you liked your own comment.
It's Matt Damon's "Cast away"
And Apollo 13.
No it's Saving private Ryan 2
Clever.
Spoiler Alert : Sean Bean doesnt die at the end
so who was the guy in the Lord of the rings??
Salvador Allende what the fuck!?! knowing that should I even watch it?
Alec O'Reilly it's a tragic
No One Dies
But his career does
Chew-wa-tell Eh-gee-oh-for
thank you!!
lolol
I mean for fucks sake he almost won an oscar. can the man get some name respect?
+Alessandro Felix I just call him Bob.
You spelled it out phonetically but you didn't show which syllables are stressed...that's where people are struggling. It's CHEW-a-tell EDGE-e-oh-fore not chee-WAT-ell which is how I hear some people saying it
I would give this film 8 Pirateninjas out of 10.
^lols
Can u pirat this shit alredy??
+JEBUZ FUGIN CRIZED not that kind of pirate hahahaha
+Anacronian A fellow book reader I see :P
+Anacronian So not even space pirateninjas?
Man I thought it was gonna get an A+ from all the reviews out.
+DustingBread Well, it has a 93% right now but only a 7.5/10, so the unanimous consensus seems to be that it's good, but not one of the greatest movies ever made.
+DustingBread I think it was one of the few movies that didn't rely on "oh, this was a successful book, let's just make a movie about it and make some money." It was very faithful to the book and honored it well
+Rajdeep Maan I think that's average rating of the RT critics is 7.5/10. The actual score is just the percentage that rated it 6/10 or higher.
+Rajdeep Maan Well, right now it has an 8.6/10 on IMDb, which you could have figured out for yourself by checking both websites, but I was in fact talking about Rotten Tomatoes. I don't think people pay enough attention to average ratings on RT. It makes the difference between a movie everyone loves/hates and one that everyone likes/dislikes to some extent, some more so than others.
RiverOfWetness468 I feel that man. I didn't love MI5 so when I saw that it was at 92 I was pretty shocked but then I saw the average score was 7.4 which seems more accurate to me.
Could it be that the NASA request was to release the movie the same week the Mars water news went public?
+Federico Pacheco Or I'm just looking too much into it?
No, the discovery is a new one, they couldn't have known beforehand.
+DefinitelyNotOfficial
That's what NASA wants you to think.
+Liverbird reptilans
Guys. Think about it.
It all makes sense now.
So glad to see you give this an A. I read the book a year ago and after I was through with it, it was easily, EASILY, in my top ten of all time. You're right, the best parts about the book definitely happen on Mars.
So glad to see all the great reviews too. I'm officially excited for the movie.
Hey Mr. Meeseeks... LOOK AT ME!
+Mr. Meeseeks Thank you for mentioning the book! I loved it as well, and I wonder if a lot of the humour Chris mentioned was taken directly from it, since that shit was hilarious! Rereading it now before I watch the movie
***** Really interesting POV on it. I hadn't heard a thing about it before I read it, guess I should be thankful, it's true that it sucks when stuff is overhyped!
Maybe put a spoiler alert somewhere in that comment though.
Also, I assume Meseeks meant top 10 of books he's read, so although I agree that top 10 of all time is a little ambitious, if Meseeks doesn't read much or has only read more recent books I would be completely with him (imo this is by FAR one of the best science fiction books of the past few years, though I'm sure there are some good ones I haven't read)
p.s: RICK AND MORTY FOREVER AND FOREVER A HUNDRED YEARS WWW.RICKANDMORTY.COM
+Andre Gronum If you think that you have already died, making it to the next day is pretty good reason to be optimistic. Also, the humor and optimism are coping mechanisms. Clever people us optimism as a way to let despair
+Andre Gronum Whereas I agree with most of your points, don't forget that most of the book is based on fictional video journals Watney created. These journals were not made everyday and there were definitely large gaps in times where no entries were made. It makes total sense to me that someone would not bother with a journal when feeling super down or depressed. Thats one way one can see how their is lack of dread on Watneys behalf. Of course he would prefer to log down his thoughts when he'd solved a problem and not a sob story of 'today i was thinking about death again and how my body would not even rot if I died here"....
I like the timing of this movie.
+BananaGaming 🍌 You're the last person I would expect here lol.
+Sinon - San right?
WHOA. The way he pronounced Chiwetel Ejiofor's name threw me so hard I had to pause and recover lol.
1:59 Chiwetelly Jofer
Hahaha I know right...chris you fucked his name up bad.
+wapprez He's a good actor, almost as good as Chiwetel Ejiofor!!!!
That had me laughing for days. Chi-wet-il-ly Jo-fer? Chris, I love ya man.
I'm ashamed to say I just finished watching the film. My dad loved anything space themed so he accidentally left his dvd at my home for about five years. With quarantine happening I decided to give it a try, and holy crap do I regret not watching this before.
I just finished watching it right now. I wish I had watched it when it came out .
Now go listened to the Audiobook. The one narrated by RC BRAY. I got it as my first audiobook back when they used to give 1 free credit when u buy a new iphone. It was like 2/3 yrs before the launched of the movie. And man oh man it was waaaay way waaaay better. The movie was excellent but the audiobook is god tier. I got hooked so badly and from then until now I listened to audiobooks and The martian is still in my library.
I just cant put into words the pride and joy when he goes for Pathfinder. Damn. Chills.
I am so incredibly excited to see this
+Cassandra me too!
Me three!
me four
+Cassandra me five
Watch your step Cassandra you
might
fall.
As I've stumbled on the fields,
sister mine,
Don't spoil scenes mate :(
yeah a bit thx
+Amey Nanote I read the book, and if the film is anything like it, what Chris "spoiled" is nothing compared to the shit that goes down
+Amey Nanote Don't worry, he didn't spoil anything. Honestly, he didn't :)
+Amey Nanote I'm pretty sure that thought won't occur to you once the opening scene plays in front of you.
StoreSusan #2Gay4Putin Thank God.
So, "Cast Away" in Space?
+Chris Bradford That's right! I wasn't. :)
I actually just watched "Cast Away" again a couple days ago. Still one of the best "survival" movies I've seen in a long time. The comparisons are apt, though. Does Matt Damon have a "Wilson" equivalent in this film? :p
+Digishade SPOILERS
I
V
no he doesn't :]
+Digishade It seems a lot more funnier than Castaway.
+Digishade yeah but cast away was good. This film was AWFUL. SO boring.
+Digishade Yep, and Wilson is a potato.
"Sebastian Stan was good," that was what I was waiting for lol I am rooting so much for Seb to get more awesome roles now
+Cassandra I heard yesterday that RDJ's been championing more pay for 'the other Avengers', whatever that means exactly. Still, it's great to see a lot of actors benefit from Marvel's exposure, hopefully in roles and financially too.
lettersfromhelen I did notice that lol but good is still a compliment
I thought he was great, as always.
Lol he has like 4 or 5 lines in the whole movie. But I actually didn't even think he was good. He was just miscast. The whole time I thought "wow this astronaut looks like an actor/model and nothing like like an astronaut"
Actually he was the only even remotely model-looking male astronaut.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Absolutely love it.
this is a good movie. a very well made movie. You watch it and have to appreciate the film making . a director's movie.
Couldn't really focus, because of Scully. Damn, she looks right into your heart, that one.
I knew there was a good reason why I subscribed to your channel Chris...keep up the great work man.
Your pronunciation of chiwetel ejiofor is unique
I saw this last night... it's a good movie *but* I didn't find it as good as some people are making it out to be. A must see but don't go in over hyped like I did.
Well then its your own fault for overhyping it, not the movie's. I went into The Martian with moderate expectations and absolutely loved it
Yeah it is good..... But it didnt get me that much..... It is def no Cast Away.......
+M Oviegeek So no talking volcano? I heard there are volcanoes up there.
@@nmr7203 Ive watched many films that have lived up to the hype. I can name a few I was hyped up about and actually met my expectations. Goodfellas, the shawshank redemption, the incredibles, the irishman to name a few, so thats bullshit
Hey Mr. Stuckmann, would you recommend reading the novel beforehand or watching the film first?
Do you get advance screenings with the press? I was curious because sometimes it seems you do and others you don't . Is it based on distributor?
In book the jump arround a lot from mars and earth. I think from what i am getting from your review it happens only 1 or 2 times. Also why they card an non indian actor for role of venkat kapoor. I have listened to audio book and i am sure the author wanted him to be indian.
+Karan Chaphekar Yeah I agree they changed his name to Vincent too
to appeal more to a western audience?
+Karan Chaphekar Yeah let's start a petition and ban this movie for not representing Indians, how about the fact the only indian actors are Aziz Ansari and that dude with Massive eyebrows who plays the pakistani guy on Silicon valley or maybe you want some guy from Bollywood to come over and break into a song with Jessica Chastain, yeah that will work.
+Aza Jabar how about irrfan khan or dev Patel or many other great Indian actors who already have worked in Hollywood?
Umais Siraj So many, sorry I stop counting because I was getting close to infinity
I'll never quite understand why you post at 5am (_literally the worst time for optimal UA-cam viewership_) -- but for night owls like myself, I still appreciate it. But seriously, get some sleep, haha!
So glad Ridley Scott knocked in out of the park with this one - cant wait to see it in IMAX laser in a few days. Don't think I've ever been disappointed with a film you scored an "A" - don't intend to start now :)
+Jogwheel You know there's such things as timezones right? At any given hour of the (earth) day, it's every hour of the day. Anyhow this video became live at 7pm on Tuesday in Sydney, Australia. Welcome from the future.
Your awesome and I love your channel. I'm also a subscriber...don't eat the spam is hilarious!
+musicalaviator there are such things as time zones BUUUUUUUUUUT Chris lives in the Central Time Zone same as me and the video was posted at 5am. So Chris is still posting it at a really weird time for where he lives...but he probably schedules his videos to post early.
*****
Did you not not read my comment? I'm aware _some_ people are awake at this hour, especially on the other side of the planet... but are YOU aware that 85% of Chris's audience lives in North America (and not Australia)? Welcome to the present.
DannyX Thank you!

Or maybe he hits the upload button, pastes the video description into the relevant area, and uploads the thumb, presses "Publish" and heads to bed.
UA-cam does it's uploady thing for a few hours and, bobs you're uncle, 5am upload.
I watched this and I didn't see the part where they went back to earth for 25 mins that you're talking about at all.. was there a different cut for the non-3D? My friend also watched this review and questioned that.
Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain review? Please? Pretty Please?
+Ma4zu6 soon... very very soon
I been waiting for it too 👀
hope its pretty good
+Ma4zu6 If you just want to hear another voice praising the game about how perfect it is, then there are already plenty.
I want to hear it once more from chris
I read the book a couple years ago. I really like it besides some pacing issues, and after I finished it, I knew this book would be definitely a great film. It's one of those books that seems to be written to be turned into a screenplay; it screams “I wanna be made into a movie” and that's probably the reason why this film is so good.
months*
I loved this movie, it was so great. My favorite part is that there was no villain, the was no evil corporation or anything.
what 25 minute sequence at the end without Damon is he talking about? I didn't notice that at all. What happened during that scene? I'll try to remember :P
Hi, sorry my poor english. I just wanna say that i found i misstake in this movie. i dont remember exact the minute but around 20-30 in the movie. He is outside and working with something and you can see that the cam he have on his shoulder in one "shot" its in the wrong side. He have all the time on one side but in this particular shot the movie cutters did something wrong and the change/turn the shot right to left side. I hope you understand me..sorry my poor english
Didn't you give Exodus like a B-?
+Mark Angelini Jr. lol he knows it wasn't a great film... i guess he was being generous that day
+Mark Angelini Jr. That's exactly what I was thinking! Sometimes I feel like Chris was one of those kids in high school who got all A's and if he got a B it was the end of the world lol he's given some movies that he kind of trashed solid B scores.
+cuzthechicksdigit I mean he does tend to overrate. He gave American Hustle an A+....I don't know if he'd stick by that now. And that's only one example.
+Mark Angelini Jr. Exactly, Chris's scores are usually inflated. I normally knock off a letter from his scores and find that to be more accurate (e.g., B- = C-). Sometimes his A's truly are A's though, so here's hoping this is one of them! Sidenote: His commentary is usually what I care for in his reviews. I tend to trust that over some arbitrary grade he gives at the end.
Exodus wasn't the greatest movie of the year, but it served its purpose as a monumental historical action movie. It's just that certain aspects of the movie didn't work too well. I still don't see the point of Chris' reaction in this review compared to him being like "movie was fine, not amazing, but okay" in the Exodus review...
I wanna see Jeremy and Chris review a movie together
before I watch this video, are there any spoilers? I'm seeing the movie tomorrow and I don't want anything spoiled.
Great review Chris!!! glad to hear the humor from the book is portrayed throughout the movie. Just finished it recently and the character is optimistic and funny throughout the book. Cant wait to see this weekend!!!
I wonder why people always mention "Alien" but never "Bladerunner", which was his actual best movie of all time. :)
Great review, now I can´t wait to see this!
Yep. ^^
I like " Alien" more but that's my opinion
+Arvid Shirasb That's a tough one... Alien or Blade Runner. I'll agree with you, Blade Runner is his best because it just has so much more to it than what you see on screen. Alien requires a mood and sometimes it seems a bit long and drawn out, whereas BR can be watched time and time again (thanks to multiple cuts;) and it still resonates.
I notice no one ever argues Legend or GI Jane.
+Cyril I like Bladrunner much more, because it has an intelligent and twisted story and there is no real villain in its plot, despite of the fact, that we´re told, who the bad guy are at the beginning. The music from Vangelis is amazingly done and there´s not a single stupid and unnecessary shot in Blade Runner. In my opinion BR can´t be beaten, no matter how many times Scott Ridley tries, but I like Alien too, so no hard feelings guys.
+Arvid Shirasb I believe Alien is remembered more because this was his first attempt at directing a full science fiction film, and he nailed it.
>That intense moment during the last minute of this video where you don't know if he'll give it an A or A+.
I'm curious, did you read the book before seeing the movie? If so, how well do you think they portrayed the book? I know the author was heavily involved throughout the production process.
+Chris Stuckmann where do you your shirts from? I remember you telling the website but I forgot it.
I like Exodus. The Counselor was bad though.
+Ben Dichiera I'd blame it more on McCarthy's script than I would Ridley Scott, the direction wasn't great or anything, but the script was incoherent at best.
+Ben Dichiera I accidentally bought the Counselor on Blu-ray because the title didn't ring a bell and it looked quite nice. My memory of the movie came back while watching the opening sequence, still hate myself for buying the movie.
+Inigo Montoya exodus was a good movie. so uderrated imo
+Inigo Montoya I still can't bring myself to watch Exodus. I think Bale and Edgerton are excellent actors, but nothing they do could let me believe they were the characters they were cast to play- and I even accepted Heston as a Mexican in Touch of Evil... hey, I just realized Heston played Moses in the Ten Commandments- see that, and even him I was willing to accept as Moses, but Bale...
I like the Counselor
Matt Damon: "WOHOOO!!" *BOOM* If you've seen the movie you know what scene I'm talking about.
Great review Chris!!!!
The last Ridley Scott movie I loved was "Prometheus" so I can't wait to see "The Martian" after hearing the positive reviews.
Chris, I understand you have a lot of reviews to do for the next few months but could you please review some Tarantino movies before the Hateful 8? (Specifically Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction).
Good review! And nice X files shirt. "The truth is out there!"
The book is where the jokes come from.
I don't know if is me, but when Watney is removing those fragments from his body, I notice that they use the same song or effect from that killing scene in Gone Girl
Glad to hear Ridley Scott is back! Awesome shirt!
everest review?
Loved it!! The only major scientific inaccuracy was the severity of the dust storm. Other than that, it's so nice to see a legitimately plausible sci-fi film.
And some of the meta humor was hilarious!😅
+Mando314159 Agreed, and the overworked publicist made the meta humor even more hilarious.
Please, tell me some similar books to this one, because i always found about them when the movie based on the book comes out :/
Love all your reviews. Good job Chris!
Could you please review Everest Please...?
You butchered Chiwetel Ejiofor's name so hard!!! hahaaa
+LightCyrus You gotta google weird names before you try to say them on your vids for thousands of people to see.
+Taha Demure What if it was your name? and you were as Oscar winning actor.
+Taha Demure almost won an Oscar anyway
Matt Damon SHOULD play as DEATHSTROKE
No
+mickypure no
+mickypure NO.
Just you want to see that
No
Chris, where did you get the Scully t-shirt from?
Chris, you keep mentioning that Mark Watney's (Matt Damon) comedic optimism is credited to the screen writing but if you read the book that is simply Mark's character. What i guess i'm saying is that the book its self written by Andy Weir is both hilarious and nail biting and i expect the same from the movie. All in all, i'm very exited to see this when it comes out!
I did enjoy the movie but the script had some weak moments. Such as when the NASA president said as long as nothing goes wrong then he should be fine according to this plan. 10 seconds later the air seal chamber explodes due to an unknown reason basically fucking this guys plan up even more. Also (SPOILERS) the recapturing of Watney felt too 'Gravity' like with the jet packing around in space to get from point a to b. Wasn't as exciting as it was meant to be. Overall good film but not many plot twists and intensity since everything is simply done through montages for the main character.
A surprisingly positive review, despite all the negative ones on Metacritic. Truly you are the only critic to trust at this point.
+Steven Norris It's got 73 what on Earth are you talking about.
+Raoul Weatherell great is the new good and good is the new bad... at least, that's how people are treating number scores these days.
Every movie over 60 is really good. Critics on metacritic are mostly over critical, and think they have a duty to uphold movie standards.
+Steven Norris
It doesn't have one negative review as of the time of me writing this. A 73 on Metacritic is actually a good score.
+Steven Norris But he did disappoint me on Magic Mike :P
Chris, where did you get your Dana Scully T-shirt?
Chris, have you read the book?
It is a really good read, even though it gets kinda tehnical sometimes. But Mark Watney is such a funny and witty character and there are so many super intense and thrilling moments, it's a real nailbiter.
I'm really looking forward to watching it soon. Unfortunately, in Germany it opens 15th of Octobre.
Anyway, thanks for letting us know that the movie (and 3D) is great so I'm gonna go watch it in theatres.
i laughed my ass off, didnt expect that at all, but loved it!
Chi-WEH-tull eeh-JOH-furr . . .
Bless your soul, Chris. XD
It’s actually Choo watt el Edge E Oh For
@@lifetheslowway A little late on this one, Eye -An -Eph.-Pea.
question! going cinema, worth seeing it in 3d or normal?
I'm so excited, this review has pumped me up even more. Gonna go see it tomorrow maybe in 3D on your recommendation!
Well, I for one, thought that C section scene in Prometheus was unintentionally hilarious, am I the only one?
+TheRealUcanUwill yes you are.. that scene was masterful.. not funny at all
Comedy gold.
+TheRealUcanUwill No you arent. But I also thought that a lot of other scenes in the movie were unintentionally hilarious. For me it was such a great looking movie with such a bad Story/Script.
+TheRealUcanUwill the whole movie is a barrel of unintentional laughs
+TheRealUcanUwill
Many other scenes were but that C section scene was truly masterful in my opinion. But again, I agree that there were many scenes that were unintentionally funny.
It's pronounced Chew-i-tell Edge-E-o-four
Great review. Loving your Papo T-rex and Raptor figures on the right shelf unit. Are they there to represent Jurassic Park/World?
Does Chris EVER reply to his comments? I have been watching him for a long time and I have not seen him reply to one of his comments.
Kind of ironoic that this film about how baron mars is comes out just as water is confirmed it exist on mars.
Nothing against the film there it looks great I just think that's quite humorous timing.
+Thomas Mason Mars is still as barren as this movie claims it is. The salty water tracts they found are seasonal and appear in certain quantities. Basically, even if Damon's character showed up at that time of year, it'd be impossible for him to harness any of it.
Jalanko13 I know that. I was making a humorous observation about the timing... I wasn't suggesting Matt Damon should try to drink highly toxic brine.
Wow i really expected this to be an A+
You talked so much love about this film, and then you give it an A :P
Youve given wayy worse movies an A+ IMO :P
A 25 minute break from what is going on on Mars (when Mars is where the main character is) isn't a good thing. It makes sense why he brought the rating down and if that 25 minutes wasn't there then the film would of probably gotten the A+ rating.
***** It probably isnt a full 25 minutes either, because ive seen many review, and no one has ever mentioned this.
And it would be a big thing to miss, and not tell in a review is it not?
FreakieFan It is Chris' opinion, he really did not like the 25 minute diversion to Earth. The other critics probably didn't mind it at all.
Plus that rating doesn't matter, he gave the film a glowing review with just one complaint that probably doesn't even matter to most.
+FreakieFan Well if it fells that way then it is worse.
Rating doesnt matter, but i was just suprised he gave this an A, and not an A+
Chris I was really waiting for you to review this film and hear what you have to say. The trailer looks really awesome, and it seemed to give it more of a vibe of a period film like The Right Stuff and Apollo 13 rather than a science fiction. I don't think it was intentional but that's the feeling I had after seeing the trailer for the first time . I love science fiction but iam starting to like science fiction movies in were you could actually see these things happening in our lifetime. as always thanks for review Chris.
What were sols in the movie ? Like time in ewrth
in the single digit viewing...
was I the only one who thought the movie had some moments that made no sense at all.
ex: when he has to put the tarp on the space ship, but the tarp is flapping in the wind... on mars... we're they had to have oxygen tanks to breath on mars because there is no oxygen on fucking mars?
or
ex: they are in a dust storm with millions of rock shrapnel flying around... and somehow the space suits don't have a single dig or scratch on them...
***** please enlighten me...
No, you are right. The dust storm thing is a cheat that the author of the book has admitted to on multiple occasions, simply because he thought it would be more dramatic. And if there can be storms, then there can be winds too, which explains the second thing.
That being said there is no need for oxygen in order for there to be turbulence in the atmosphere, if that's what you were saying. The martian atmosphere is about 1/10th as strong as earths and any wind would therefore feel 1/10th as strong as well.
oxygen isnt the only gaseous substance to exists. Wind can exist without oxygen.
Chris, the humor and positivity that you mentioned Damon's character having is pretty well indicotive of an astronaut. They are very strong people (clearly) and they are thrill seekers on the highest order. So they not only generally have great outlooks they are also trained to use that to break that tention and stay positive. They are on a different level than the rest of us, really. And you sold me on this movie. I'm not a big damon fan (his politics bother me) but he is a hell of an actor and I'll give this movie a shot. Thanks!
Please, let someone tell me where I can get this shirt.
I liked Exodus, and this is coming from a dude who doesn't believe in that type of crap.
This movie is AMAZING. I loved it from beginning to end. Matt Damon made his character so relatable and hilarious, you truly cared what happened to him. GO SEE IT RIGHT NOW!
i love the book and I'm really looking forward to see this in 3d, also is there any disco music in the movie?
Thanks a lot Chris, I was on the fence to watch this, the trailer and premise seemed good. But your review sealed the deal. One large popcorn please!
matt damon's best work in years? he was in interstellar and that's hard to top
Maybe he does in this. Go see it and judge for yourself.
+frank unodostres That Interstellar Cameo was completely unnecessary and took me out of the film (wish Nolan had gotten a less known actor for it). Where as in the martian the success of the whole film is riding on Damons shoulders.
Zach Farr I can't understand that argument. how does the fact whether an actor is famous or not take you out of the film? maybe I'm dumb but I honestly don't get it
The fact that it was an uncredited cameo. I was really into the movie, then all of a sudden Matt Damon pops up. And I thought "wait Damons in this?". Probably just a personal preference, but he's a very recognizable actor and It just reminded me I was watching a movie. I got right back into it, and I thought he did well in the role, but I think an unknown would have been better for the part.
_"He's hilariously funny. Every single that happens that goes wrong he finds the good in it......he finds the humor in this terrible situation"_
That's what makes this film a typical hollywood one dimensional crap. The guy is all alone on the lifeless planet and he's not bothered at all. No worries, fears, emotional struggles....nothing. There is no sense of solitude and isolation. Just a collection of problem solving puzzles and a light minded guy having fun.
No watch the film, he broke down 3 times, nearly giving up. Also astronauts are well trained and are also hand picked. Real astronauts are put into tests on earth where they are contained and isolated to test their cabin fever susceptibility. So no, its entirely plausable that this dude could maintain his calm and only break downa few times
+FeatherBlack Actually there are several moments in which he reveals his emotional vulnerability (the initial recording of himself, when he first makes contact with Earth, the HAB mishap, and during the takeoff sequence all come to mind.) He experiences fear, but his personality makes him mask it with humor. If anything it makes the scenes in which that facade crumbles all the more powerful. You also see his humor grow progressively more out there as the stress and isolation take their toll.
THIS. The 3rd manned mission to Mars is not going to be full of idiots like these.
Super Earthling Yamcha Idiots like who?
FeatherBlack
i don't mind a character like this. it's just that he was never really tested in the movie.
If he fails multiple times at things or have some near death experience then makes a quip about dying from disco music, then it would have a much greater impact.
Hey Chris, you should do another halloween special video this month. I loved the other ones you've done, like to see another
Chris you need to do a weekly podcast! Interview actors, directors and so on. That would be awesome and I would totally listen
I thought the movie was decent but it's no Interstellar
^
BizarreSmallville It may not be as deep as interstellar, but you have to give the Martian credit for creating an exciting plot that was intense and also pretty funny.
Dime Time1007
you mean predictable plot with bland editing and zero tension?
Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Interstellar was an amazing film. But, the plot holes in that movie where bigger than Gargantua. I mean "love transcending space- time, gravity and dimensions"? What the fuck, Nolan? That's the lamest most non-scientifically grounded scientific bullshit I've ever heard. And the last 15 minutes where ridiculously unnecessary. I love Interstellar, but it's no "The Martian".
so dissappointed you thought so much of this film sigh
You mentioned Exodus: Gods and Kings as a Ridley Scott slip up, what about the Counselor?
I REALLY love this movie. I have it downloaded on my phone and listen to it many times during long commutes. The movie is refreshingly light hearten even though Damon is stranded on another planet! I have seen a few people say that damon is always cracking jokes. I think the screenwriters were trying to make the comedy of the script play out through other characters as well. Even scenes that damon was not in were funny.
One other thing I love is that science is the driving force behind the story. Not characters or plot devices.
This movie sucked and matt damon was playing jason bourne. I had high hopes because of the reviews :/
me to. it sucked
people must have convinced themself it was good because of the director.
+rooster sideburbs indeed, however imo matt damon was phenomenal as a crazy lunatic in interstellar. By the way the martian is really nothing like interstellar
What the fuck did you watch, mate ?!! .. he was the exact opposite of jason bourne
Mido Mado wut?
Movie was predictable and riddled with one dimensional, stereotypical characters.
How are you able to see movies so early before their release?
Really enjoyed this movie, wish the ending showed some landing instead of earth cuts, and idk about donald glover in this, better than he was in magic mike xxl I suppose.
This movie was dog shit.
I would say you are only fit to see your own Poop
The humour was so predictable and formulaic you could see the jokes coming from a mile away. Every scene was a cliche and an idea that you've seen many times before. The 3D was a total gimmick too. I give it F.
+Mani M Yeah the predictability of this movie was a big bummer. Even all the "wronggoings" were easily forseeable and made the film feel superficial. That also lead to a lack of sci fi atmosphere which in the end left the film for a cheap Comedy with some nice visuals here and there. I d rate it with a C
boi learn how to review or even watch movies before you make your opinion
Finally Ridleys picked the ball back up, can't wait to see it. In Stuckmann we trust!!
anybody know what Chris' shirt is referencing?
Thanks for the review. Side note ... who's on the t-shirt? Scully?
I'm getting Phantom Pain in your lack of the new Metal Gear review. I really want to know what you thought of the 'ending'
Movie looks great but what are the differences from the book?
I'm going to see it tomorrow, so happy to see all the great reviews
