Colonial historians viewed India as a country that lacks the feeling of nationhood and self governance. They proposed that scriptures in India had no sense of time and chronology and people were only interested in spiritualism due to which the society needs someone to govern them. The Indian society has caste system due to which it lacks harmony. The modern Indian historians rectified this generalisation by putting forward the ancient Indian history which preaches about the governance of Ashoka’s kingdom and making clear that India is well versed in self government and do not require a despotic rule. The rationalist did felt that there was a need of reform which every society needs in terms of growth and development. Certain writers such as RD Bhandarkar criticised child marriage and were in support of widow remarriage as they were ideologies from the ancient india. The modern historians such as Rajendra Lal mitra marked that the class system in Europe was similar to caste system In India.

Answer of the given question 👇👇👇 The colonialist historians generalized Indians in the following category: i. No nationhood,ii. Caste and discrimination, iii. Despatic rule and iv. Spiritualism and the next world thinking. Let's discuss the counters of Nationalist historians through the following points: i. Through the writting of RG Bhandarkar's Political history of Satavahanas he proved the that we have nationhood in ourselves. ii. Rationalist approach of Some nationalist historians compare our caste system to the European's class system, which some how managed the criticism of colonialist historians. iii. DR Bhandarkar's Work on Ashoka and Hemachandra Roy Chowdhury's Work on Mahabharata to Gupta Era showed the administrative power on Indians and the capabilities of Indians to govern themselves. iv. The Lokayata believes of Ancient India proved the "this world thinking" of Indians and showed that Indians were not only tensed about the next world but also payed attention to this world.
Max Mueller and other western scholars made certain generalizations about the nature of ancient Indian history and society. • They- - The ancient Indians lacked a sense of history, especially of the factor of time and chronology. -The Indians were accustomed to despotic rule. -The natives were engrossed in the problems of spiritualism or of the next world and least bothered about the problems of this world. - The caste system was most vicious form of social discrimination Indians had neither experienced the feeling of nationhood nor any kind of Self govt. Vincent Arthur smith gave primacy to political history, his approach was imperialist, emphasized the role of foreigners in ancient India India was presented as a land of despotism which did not experience political unity until establishment of British rule. The modern Indian historians rectified this generations by reconstruct ancient Indian history of India in such a manner as to make case for social reform and for self-government. They adopted mainly three approaches (1) Rationalist approach(2) political history (3) Hindu revivalism Historians and scholars like rajendra lal mitra compare our caste system to the European's class system, writers such as R.G Bhandarkar criticised child marriage and caste system and were in favour of widow remarriage as they were ideologies from the ancient india, also through the political history of satavahanas he proved that we have nationhood in ourselves, the writings of D.R Bhandarkar about the political institution of Ashoka proved that we have a strong administrative system and Indians have capabilities to govern themselves. Pandurang vaman kane wrote-history of 'Dharmashastra'and studied of social processes in ancient india, Rc Majumdar focused on History and culture of Indian people,Kp jayaswal wrote several articles to show that the republics existed in ancient times and enjoyed a measure of self-government. The Lokayata believes of Ancient India proved the "this world thinking" of Indians and showed that Indians were not only tensed about the next world but also payed attention to this world. As we move towards Non-political history A.L. Basham and D.D. Kosambi were two of the most influential historians of ancient India A.L. Basham was one of the first historians to use archaeological and literary evidence to reconstruct the political and social structures of ancient Indian society. D.D. Kosambi was an Indian historian who made significant contributions to the study of ancient Indian Society, particularly in the areas of economic history and the history of science and technology. His work on the economic history of ancient India, in particular, has been highly influential in the field. Both Basham and Kosambi played a major role in shaping the way that historians today understand ancient Indian history.

Colonial historians are those who argued that Colonial rule was right in India. They argued that Indian do not have proper time chronology, they like Despotic rule, believes in Spiritualism and thinks about the next world i.e. after death world, Caste & discrimination and also argued that there is no nationalism as well as no self governance. Though which was then rectified by Modern Historians that they are not fully right as taking an illustration that self government or talking about political history under Ashoka's rule there was well established self government which was even told by D.R. Bhandarkar in his book named- "Political Institution of India". Similarly, many modern historians argued such as Rajendra Lal Mitra in his book talked about Indo Aryans, Vedic texts related to rationalistic approach.
