We spent a month on the West coast in 2008, with a nine month old who had just started to crawl and get on his feet. Driving on the right was not as bad as I thought it would be. For me the biggest surprise was the lack of culture shock. Navigating in unfamiliar place can be stressful wherever you are in the world.
Hope you have a great time there.
You were surprised driving on the other side of the road! Must of been a big change! Glad you enjoyed your trip! We can't wait for the next videos!
Yes, can be a bit confusing driving on the other side and even more intimidating doing it in LA.
Very impressed you went from left to right side driving. Especially being that the first streets you took were in LA, with it's traffic, aggressive driving and crappy streets.
Yep, it hurt my brain after only a few hours of sleep on the flight over 😂
This is exactly what I felt like when I came to Australia last year from Canada.
😂
Great video, Tesla is the future, now!
It was also a mindfuck when I drove in New Zealand for the first time (I'm from the US), but I actually got used to it after like a day
Bravo, I've done 2 massive road trips throughout America, just got back over a week ago from 12,000km LA to Key West (Florida) and back again in an ICE car, taking just over 6 weeks. This included 2 kids, though my wife did not want to chance a EV, so we went with an ICE. I was guttered but it would have added a ton of time to our journey. Driving through major cities can be daunting, but you handled it like a champ! Great team work, looking forward to seeing the rest of your journey!
Thanks so much for the comment ! We had such a fun time in the end. Sounds like an epic trip that you did ! Are you guys from Australia as well?
@@RyanCowan Yep, from Oz (Central Coast). How good are right turns on red. Wish we had more roads with that option here!
@@geekyperi Yeah they actually make a lot of sense once we got used to them. I also felt there was more manners on the road than we have here (which was very surprising)
Great first video in the US, really looking forward to seeing more of your trip. and hope you like the USA
13:45 That has mostly to do with you driving in LA, because when you use your indicator to change lanes drivers tend to speed up and not slow down because they don’t want to wait for you and be stuck behind you.
When driving in Southern California we all know that we need to do the “use indicator and swiftly change lanes before the other driver can speed up” maneuver, or just not use the indicator at all. I always use the indicator (because I know it’s still rude not to) but I can kind of understand other people not using it as often if they want to change lanes while driving in LA (and other parts of CA) because you wouldn’t be able to merge otherwise because drivers are so impatient here.
Great first video in the US, really looking forward to seeing more of your trip.
Thanks mate !!
Big fan of your work! Looking forward to more videos of your US trip! 😊
Thank you ! 🥰
Yes, it was humid here like a few weeks ago which was unusual for here but becoming more frequent. I’m too nervous to use Autopilot on PCH because of the sudden stops and turns but I see you felt okay using it. That little mall thing in Malibu is cute too.
Thanks for the comment ☺ In fairness I was constantly switching AP on and off when we were on the PCH. Full Self Driving might have actually been better in this situation 😂 And yeah, that shopping area in Malibu was really nice ! Are you based in LA?
What a fantastic video. I was so nervous for you guys. Keep them coming ❤
Thank you ! 🥰
Ryan, that brings back memories of my first time experience driving on the right hand side in Paris in 1999 starting from the centre of town with no GPS or a descent map and spending about a hour trying to get on to the freeway and then contenting with the high speed drivers doing extreme speeds over the sign posted limits. It was a quick learning curve to adapt or we felt like taking the hire car back to obtain a much more powerful vehicle to match the local's driving . We had a same issues with looking the wrong way out of habit
haha wow that sounds intense !! At least everything was in English in the US ! haha Paris would be much harder
Looking forward the video's of the trip. Driving on the opposite side takes some time to get used to.
Tight right, loose left 👍🏼
haha spot on ! Thanks mate, more videos coming soon 🇺🇸
cant wait for more
Thanks ! 🥰
great video loved it
Thank you so much ! 🥰
Welcome to California! You're brave driving out of LAX into LA traffic. We live in Palm Springs and always tell our friends to call us when they land at Palm Springs airport because we have no interest in facing LAX/LA traffic. :) We have a 2022 Model 3. Best car we've ever owned. Enjoy your stay and we're looking forward to seeing more videos of your visit here!
haha 😂 Yeah felt very intense around LAX ! We didn't get a chance to visit Palm Springs but heard it's beautiful (and a very popular holiday destination!). Glad to hear you're loving your Model 3. Appreciate you following along.
Welcome to USA Ryan !!
Thanks mate !!
Love Love Love this video, thanks for sharing the unfiltered real life experience with you guys mate. Welcome Back to OZ.
Thank you mate !! This is great feedback to get. Really appreciate it as it always feels weird sharing content that's so raw like this. Glad you enjoyed it and more videos coming soon 🙌
@@RyanCowan haha. Always mate. It was great to see you guys experience this for the first time as well.
We felt the same when we first tried driving in that side was so weird
Love the rawness of it. 🤙🏼
I spent a month working in Trinidad and Tobago where they drive 'on the wrong side'. I got used to it to the point it's never quite a problem again. The only issue I had was after I got back home when I started to exit a parking lot. It's no problem driving on the roads as they are marked and there are other cars. But parking lots - I really had to think whether to get in the left or the right side pulling up to the exit.
Wow what an adventure for a Tesla/EV fan guys!
Looking forwards to the rest.
And welocome home. 😊
Awesome video.
Thank you !
you both are sooooo sweet!!!😊
but believe me it’s exactly the same feeling when you have your first ride on the left side as a german 😂😂😂
Great video! I really felt for the two of you driving on the right side of the road. The tension was so clear in your faces!
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. So you are aware front license plates ARE required in California. 80% of the vehicles on the road have the required front plate. That is unless it is a Tesla. Only 20% of the Teslas you see in California have the required front plates. Two reasons, Tesla owners LOVE their cars and feel the front plate distracts from the looks. Also if they do get a ticket it is a fix it ticket. I have seen posts that here in the Bay Area there is a crackdown targeting cars without front plates.
I hope you filmed your charging experience in LA. There are so many Tesla owners there and so many live in apartments without home charging. Quite often you have to wait in line for a charger.
Hey Richard, thanks so much for watching. Very interesting to hear from you about the front number plate situation-as you're correct in saying it was normally just Tesla's we noticed that didn't have the front plate 😂 You'd never get away with that in Australia, they'd book you instantly ! Do you drive a Tesla yourself in San Fran?
@@RyanCowan Yes, we have had a 2022 Model 3 since February 2022. Really love it. We live in East Bay. Big issue driving and parking in San Francisco or Oakland. If you park in certain neighborhoods there likely thugs will break small rear side window. They then reach through and pull your rear seat down so they can see any valuable you have. They recommend if you must park in those areas clean out your trunk and leave your back seats folded down. If you do have anything of real value they recommend you leave in your frunk. Any case where I live haven’t had any issues.
I'm from the US but I've done a lot of driving in the UK and Australia so I'm pretty comfortable driving on the other side of the road. It just takes a bit of practice.
Welcome to the US
I remember my first time driving in the States. Was always going to the wrong side to hop into the driver seat, if no cars around would end up on wrong side 🤣
haha yep SO true !
Lol that was so funny to watch 😂
haha thanks
Drive safe... !
I drove out of that exact exit 10 weeks ago 😊
What did u rent !? ☺
Tesla model 3, after driving a Tesla I ordered a model 3 and receive it on Tuesday pick up here in Brisbane 😊
@@brandstefff That's awesome !! Congrats, very excited for you !
Im in the UK and my head is on a swivel with all the electriccars I have seen 😁.
this is me before watching the new vid. Calm but excited
Post video.
Some highlights:
How Ryan said chipotè 😂
Paige asked about the speed limit and Ryan reply’s confidently ‘kind of yeah’. (Was too funny)
Can’t wait for more US content rental experience, leaving the car at the airport, and ofc the main event.
So glad you guys had such a great time.
Ps the dynamic in the car with Paige trying to stay away while Ryan is spotting Teslas non-stop. 😂😂 cool to see a plaid c
though. Good luck settling back to freezing Melbourne
@@techreview8661 hahah 😂 thanks mate !! appreciate you watching as always 🙌 Can't wait to upload more videos soon. The cars over there were insane, soooo many EV's. Like casually just seeing Rivian's and Lucid's on the road was mind blowing.
@@RyanCowan yeah sounds amazing. My friend who was there in July and I was asking so many question about EVs and they could not give a shit. So good to here from a Tesla nerd like myself
Well done Ryan & Paige, will look forward to watching more! One question. Was Autopilot same as your home car ? I am not such a fan of Autopilot - (but I want to be.) To me, the car tracks to close to the centreline especially on left hand bends. I drive more in the middle - so much so, the car warns me and tells me to "take control".
Thanks mate ! Autopilot was the same as home, but we noticed the navigation was more precise given that mapping data would be even more detailed in California vs Australia.
Welcome to the USA!
i love the the video
I moved from the UK 🇬🇧 many years ago live in Canada / USA and know what you are feeling
I'm originally from Europe, which (generally) drives on the right. Australia, obviously, drives on the left. The trick I used when switching between left and right was not to think in terms of left and right… think in terms of “my side” and “offside”. The centre of the road is on “my side”. This is true wherever you drive. Unless you’re in a diverging diamond of course… I don’t think they have those in Australia though.
What I would find disturbing about driving in America is the use of feet instead of meters! I don’t know how far away 500 feet is!
Sounds like my experience attempting to drive in New Zealand.
I'm only 3 minutes in and I'm so stressed for you guys!!!!
Welcome to usa
I had anxiety just watching you drive on the other side of the road while waiting for autopilot to calibrate !
hahaha yep !! I was VERY glad once I could use Autopilot ! Makes me think I should have got a car with FSD Beta !!
Great Vid. I’ve saved to watch again before next trip to states. I will use Auto-steer & Autopilot as much as possible to prevent lapsing to wrong side. I loved Paige’s support from passenger set and I’ll be pointing that out to my wife before US trip, as i cop a lot of backseat driving in Melb from my wife and wont need to distraction over there. Definitely worth paying extra for a Tesla rent a car for added safety.
Thanks Martin ! How often do u go to the US? We loved being able to rent the same car, and it was surprisingly cheap with Hertz. However, a few people from the event rented with Turo and had FSD ! Appreciate the comment mate !
Some people draw an arrow with textor on the windscreen pointing to the side you drive on.
haha that's a good idea
it's very disconcerting driving on the right side (I'm from NZ). My wife and I were in Virginia after picking up a care at Dulles and took the long way to our first destination , in Leesburg, as I couldn't my head around doing a left turn. It got better, and freeway driving is particularly enjoyable in the US. Best wishes for your trip.
haha yep, totally agree. Once we got on the freeways, made it easier-although was odd that nobody follows the speed limit 😂
Welcome to the US, and welcome back home! It was very interesting to see your experience on the "wrong side" of streets, and different cars, and feel of towns...
yeah, Southern California and especially LA, and parts of Hollywood even, are... kind of crummy. Not appealing at all. Other parts like Malibu and stuff are nicer tourist towns, but still ... roads and sidewalks are not kept up very well (if sidewalks even exist- go to some central state like Texas, they don't exist apparently, can't even walk kids to school?!)....
Northern CA can be bit nicer, but... and , traffic & drivers are nicer, too. Even I hated driving in LA traffic at end of western US roadtrip, so stressful, AP saved me even as a local driver!
Superchargers there are more crowded also, lots of Teslas and not as many homes w/ charging, it is better elsewhere.
great job driving & dealing w/ jetlag! Glad AutoPilot helped... bit strange, it had to calibrate still? did Hertz do some factory refresh between renters?
Note, Hertz apparently has just implemented driver cloud profiles now! w/ some QR code on car screen, it will tie to your account AND you can use phone-as-key even!! (wonder how profiles would work, left vs right-hand drive??)
Thanks for your unique foreigner perspective!
Thanks so much for the comment, I was REALLY hoping we'd get to see the new Hertz/Tesla app integration. I forced a software update but still no luck. I also wondered why AP needed to calibrate-surely that's not for every new rental booking!? And good to know Northern CA is nicer! We were honestly surprised by just how 'underwhelming' some of the areas were around LA. Thanks so much !
@@RyanCowan some sort of Hertz-Tesla API service thing made so much sense to me, just automate "add a driver" to the Tesla rental car, even at rental, add to your app/account and you can even find the car in the lot! Not quite there yet, but so awesome. It does need some latest car update apparently.
My family and I were bit shocked driving around Hollywood etc, few years back expecting lots of glitz and glamour, and... it many parts were *seriously* run-down like you saw. Maybe kind of like Vegas, only the show Strip has all the lights, and off the show part, it's junky.
My worst experience driving to LA on 101 etc, was... seeing all the oil well derricks/jacks... right off the highway/road, near houses/schools, even beaches... just, disgusting, even decades ago as a kid... worse now w/ EVs. Just disturbing seeing something so ugly, dangerous, poisonous (albeit critical), right in front of you... ugly industry exposed. My college teen still has to watch out on the SoCal beaches,... due to old oil well leaks, you still get tarballs on your feet at the beach. So disgusting. Can't wait for the clean green revolution to end it!
SoCal many folks finally actually SAW some of those great mountains like you saw, covid lockdowns cleared all the smog for first time in generations! Hope it stays that way, soon!
Just have to drive is closer to the centre of the road and passenger is closer to the footpath… “sidewalk” 🤪
Loose Left Tight Right is how I remembered to turn .. I did end up on the wrong side a couple of times though 😅
😆haha
Hi ryan , Tesla have to built electric paddle touch the floor not to make your leg so tired❤❤
Enjoy yourselves and the ride. You going to the Tesla Museum?
Yep, already been ! Was amazing, will do some content on it for sure
Good news, if you goto StThomas (which is a US territory) you can drive on our side!!
😮
This car looks very bumpy and shaking all the time... is it just normal in tesla y?
Might just be the camera. But typically, Model Y is known for having a firmer suspension.
Who did you hire through at LAX?
Hertz
I hoped you figured out that you can set Km’s instead of miles, but reading speed limits must be hard in the USA.
Yeah I initially went to change it but then realised I need MPH to see the speed haha
What’s the cost of excess waiver for rentals?
I'm not sure sorry !
Australia to USA
I see one major issue with that car the steering wheel is on the wrong side.
You should drive model x
Hopefully next time !! 😁
Haven’t heard so many f bombs from you lol
I remember my first time driving over there. Definitely a mind f*
haha yeah sorry about the swearing 😂
you don't know traffic until you are stuck on the 405 at 5pm - just saying.
😂 I can only imagine ! Luckily we didn't really get much traffic at all for our entire trip !
This car couldn't even soaked up the road as well as shaky too why?
Might have just been the camera
Haha. Enjoy, never heard you swear so much! 😂
haha yeah, this footage was a bit more raw than usual ! Apologies for the swearing haha 😂
A lot of people here in California don’t put plates on the front of teslas I ain’t putting one on my X plaid wife isn’t on her Y either there are a lot of Teslas in Los Angeles I love LA did you’s like it
Loved LA, can't wait to go back. 🥰 Do u risk getting a ticket by not putting a plate on the front?
@@RyanCowan yes but the police don’t really give you a hard time about it amount of Tesla’s and Supercars plus normal cars I see daily in LA without front plates is a lot I currently drive a 2023 Kia Sorento and don’t have a front plate haven’t been stopped yet
