Mine would just start the victim speech, then get furious and look really evil if her scene doesn't work. I believe I was able to have a mature conversation about an actual topic once or twice in my whole life. She and my dad started to feel immature to me not long before I became a teenager myself, and that took a toll on me. Parenting yourself is crazy, but I'm confident that I did my best. At least I'm better than them.

Most people only remember the contraversy of the cheating scandal surrounding the actress and the director. Not the movie. That's the problem with a lot of movies nowadays. I like this movie, too. Not as much as Mirror Mirror, but Kristen Stuart did an excellent job as Snow White. The sequel is okay, although not my favorite. Disney doesn't have to do a live-action Snow White, two of them have already been made! As for the cheating scandal? That shouldn't factor into whether you enjoy the director's movie or not. One universal aspect of movies that get a reputation for being kinda bad or at least "not great" but acquire a niche following such as this movie, Van Helsing, The Mummy, Stargate and so many more I can't think of right now (also not just sci-fi and fantasy genre), is camp. They're a little camp. And Hollywood americans just don't get camp. And that doesn't mean gay or queer, its a tone, a vibe, a kind of acting or worldbuilding and certain sincerity or earnestness. Its hard to define.
Yet, such films resonate with younger people, outsiders, non-americans etc. and I think thats really interesting.

Stargate, while personally the series surpasses it, is a good movie that clearly was magical enough to get a series made.
      And the mommy wasnt loved?

@@marocat4749 Yes, but Stargate never caught the mass imagination as it were. The Mummy was also liked, but never huge as such; more popular in Europe and elsewhere than the US. Its also campy fun which doesn't vibe with US more "unga bunga action star" preferences.
Chronicles of Riddick is also a movie you can add to the list, but it is another sci-fi/fantasy movie and I've been trying to think of other genre movies that fit the "C+ or B- movie in the US because campy, but A in EU and elsewhere because they're more ok with that" category.

I do think she has a limited range and is only suited to a specific type of role. If she's cast for anything outside of that, it comes off wooden to me too.
Meanwhile, I saw a screening of "The Lighthouse" last night and was left stunned. Robert Pattinson also has a relatively limited range, in that he can specifically play unhinged characters who come off as quiet and reserved on the surface, but he's so good at it that I think he deserves an Academy Award for some of his performances.

As a person that loves fantasy I absolutely love this movie, to me Ravenna represented toxic feminism (she says a couple times in the movie that men only know how to break a woman´s heart), her view of men is very distorted. On the other hand, there´s Snow white who represents a new generation of feminism that hasn´t learned to hate men, she is hope, femininity, life and at first soft and kind, but learns to be fierce and lead an army to war without resorting to using her beauty (like seducing men). The feminist undertones, the costume designs, the beautiful cinematography and the amazing musical score makes this movie a gem that was ahead of it´s time, I love the cast´s acting too, Kirsten was extremely competent in this role and to me she was rightly casted. Thanks for talking about this movie, it deserves more recognition.

The huntsman relationship with her always felt avuncular, never romantic, and the kiss felt like a goodbye meant for the one he wasn't able to give his wife after she was taken. I'm always here for a good "Publicly Labelled Bad Film is Good Actually" takes, especially if it's for a movie that I myself remember liking when I first saw it. The Matrix sequels being a prime example, along with your Van Helsing and Underworld videos. Your description of Snow White's arc in this movie is very well done, how her "fairest blood" relates to her being a kind and caring person in the face of hardship (similar to Cinderella and what it is about her that is so often overlooked , but in a darker and more epic way), the deconstruction of Ravenna's character reveals a lot more depth to her than first watch, and the supporting cast and visuals do indeed help you feel as though you've explored this fairytale world enough by the time it's all over (later aided further by its sequel). 🍎
Speaking of dark fairytale movies, there's a 2008 indie film called "Spike" that re-tells Beauty and the Beast as a cloaked "teens hunted by a killer in the woods" horror film, turning the fairytale into a modern Gothic cautionary tale about a living as both man and Beast, and how all too easy it is for the Beast to take over in spite of overt instances on one's own humanity (kind of like Phantom of the Opera in a sense). It's a slow-paced and largely mediative movie, and as such, relies quite heavily on whether you can get invested in the (nameless) characters, which is why IMDB viewer opinion on it is so varied (an understatement). But I for one found the film quite fascinating, requiring multiple re-visits just for how atmospheric and sincere it all presents itself, so I've decided now to recommend it onto you, Bob! (it's free to watch on Tubi). 🌹

@@BetterWithBob Awesome, I'm glad I've piqued your interest with it! Spike was a movie that long-since intrigued me when I first read about it on the BATB adaptations Wiki (my favorite fairytale), but it's so indie that there's not a lot to be found about it aside from its IMDB page, so imagine how happy I was when I finally spotted its availability on Tubi. Being the analytical viewer I am, I enjoyed much of what it had to say about the presentation of fairytales through our modern lens. While yes, much of it can and does come off in a pretentious, "This isn't how people talk," sort of way, but if you allow yourself to be pulled in by it all, you'll start to understand some of the messages being communicated by writer/director Robert Beaucage's screenplay. In particular, the danger of using fairytale tropes as evidence to why someone should love you. 🖤

We have to witness how LOW an empire like Disney have to fall, to look back at unappreciated art that was good 10 years ago but no one give it a chance as we lived in better times, but now that we are starving for GOOD ART...........the realization of how bad we treat these films hit harder in the face now, I saw this movie in THEATERS and I remember been MIX when I saw it, I love the visuals but my blind hate through Kristen Stewart didn't allow me to give her flowers..............I have grow from that and so happy to see people now give them and this film the flowers rightfully deserved, specially when you look at the crap we are get feeding today.....this film looks GORGEOUS, a dark fantasy done right, the themes and characters all done right, I wish Disney or WB or Netflix could pull off this, I saw this weekend DAMSEL and my god that movie is so bad, makes this one looks like LORD OF THE RING in comparison, Rupert Sanders is actually very underrated, and in the visual department the guy never disappoint, he had 2 films under his wing and both are in my opinion UNDERRATED, this and Ghost in the Shell, not perfect by any mean but the dude always try and I like that, can't wait to actually see his version of the CROW when he release it this year (if is not push back)......thanks for makes this video man.

Whenever I think of Charlize Theron, I think of these Snow White movies first - because this is what I first saw her in before anything else. She is SO intimidating and so good in these movies that I cannot think of any “evil queen” archetype without thinking of her first. For that and the Florence + The Machine end credits song? 10/10 ❤

Your monologue around the 22 minute mark is so spot on. Movies USED to depict the _real_ toxic traits of women -- female rivalry, vanity, manipulation, and female rage primarily. Now, all those things are basically subtley celebrated in modern movies. Making the female lead of every Disney remake and female-lead film and show an "I'm not like other girls" girl _encourages_ female rivalry. Vanity, pride, and self-satisfaction are now portrayed as good, when the female lead "comes into her power" -- aka realizes that she's the best and everyone else is just trying to hold down her awesomeness. Manipulating men is portrayed as good because our modern, _overly_ feminist culture says that men -- especially straight white me -- are sh*t, and women who can use their "wiles" to manipulate them are cool. And above all, female rage is portrayed as "badass" and "powerful", instead of a what makes women so incredible: _serenity_ of heart, the ability to withstand incredible pain and not break, gentle nurturing kindness, and mercy. Those are things women are good at in a way men generally aren't. And turning all these toxic traits into "girl boss" traits is just awful.

    • @Sydvicious_studios
      @Sydvicious_studios 10 місяців тому +7

I think a lot of women are tired of being forced into the nurturing, serene, gentle, kind, understanding role. The reason the toxic traits are celebrated is because it's empowering to be something other than the box women are often placed into. I love seeing women not be afraid to be what they are, no matter how ugly that may be. Sure, being manipulative is toxic, but some people are manipulative, and let's not be afraid to say women can be evil too. I see what you're saying for sure, I just think it's better to lead with curiosity rather than judgement when it comes to the feminist culture (or any culture, for that matter!).

    • @milo_thatch_incarnate
      @milo_thatch_incarnate 10 місяців тому +8

@@Sydvicious_studios - I understand your point, but I respectfully would say that I have to disagree with it. The whole point of calling the qualities I listed "traits" is because I believe that they are inherent and built into a woman's heart, and that only maturity can make them blossom.
Being a forceful, un-gentle, masculine, manipulative, or angry woman is, I believe, armor to protect the gentle side of our hearts. It takes maturity, love, and growth to see those deeper traits flourish.
I also find it interesting that you would suggest that being manipulative or evil is... fine. At least that's how it sounds like you're putting it. Just because "some people are manipulative" as you said, doesn't mean they shouldn't work to grow out of that state.
Growth should be the goal, not "this state in which I am now (however ugly) is just how I am, and I can't (or won't) change it." That's stagnant and pretty unhealthy.

I don't understand why this movie got such hate at the time and tbh I'm glad is getting the proper recognition it deserves lately (maybe thanks to the upcoming Disney - almost certain-abomination?). The production value is top-notch, the main cast have done a great job and the plot despite based on very basic source material - let's face it, the fairytale itself has not much to tell - has its own twists and interpretations while respecting the original source at the core. It's far from perfect but far from being labelled as bad as well. People back then really had unrealistic expectations and standards, I really wouldn't know what they were looking for exactly. What did you expect from a movie based on a children tale, I wonder. The cheating/ affair "scandal" emerged (at least in my country) months later the movie came out to cinemas so it was almost entirely prejudice regarding Stewart. Which unless living under a rock it is widely known and accepted that she's a good actress.

I took a bit of a new tack with Snow White and The Huntsman; it's like a live action fanfiction. All the FF tropes are there, everything from it's overwroughtness, the love triangle, making Snow into a warrior princess, hell even the ripped off LOTR and Miayazaki imagery is par for the course when thinking of it as a middle-schooler's take on Snow White. And that not to say I don't enjoy fanfiction, I really do, but when I look at this movie through the FF lenses, I can appreciate it a bit more.
Edit: I have to also put in that I really appreciated the costumes and armor and even tactics in this film. They all have heighten feel to them being a fairy story but I could certainly believe that this was normal clothing that characters would be wearing in this story, I would credit that to what looks like the art department taking a time period (looks like roughtly 15th century Germany to me) and basing the costume designs around even if accuracy isn't the name of the game it being a fairy take, and I always appreciate functional armor. Everything was well fitted and everyone could move in it well and people were even using helms and shields. Always a plus.

I also loved Stewart's performance... except the rallying the troops scene where I just didn't believe the intensity.

Bruh this film was and remains my favorite film of all time, so much so that I’m writing a sapphic retelling of this retelling. I will be forever bitter that they dropped Kristin for the sequel and basically retconned the entire first film with it UGH. The huntsman broke the spell so what was the second movies point??????? Stupid. Also I like to think that Ravenna was jealous of both Snow’s physical beauty AND fairest blood, because she was obsessed with how she herself was aging and losing her power.

I really didnt understand all of the negative criticism this movie got when it came out... Of course it wasn't perfect, but I really liked it! I feel like a HUGE part of it was just because people were hating on Kristen Stewart. I even remember seeing a video from a _beauty_ UA-camr (I think it was MakeupbyTiffanyD) after the movie came out, who had just seen the film and said something to the effect of "I dont understand why people are saying its a bad movie. I like Kristen Stewart, but even if I didnt, its not like she 'did a bad job' or whatever... Like, I think her performance was perfectly fine and its a good movie." Obviously im paraphrasing, because it was a casual vlog type video that I watched over a decade ago, but her saying that in the video (I'm almost certain it was from MakeupbyTiffanyD) stuck in my head and made me more curious about the movie when I'd heard mostly negative things until that point. I definitely remember looking for ways to watch it after that, watched it as soon as I found it available for streaming (I think I might've actually rented it), and quite enjoyed it!
People really hate on Kristen Stewart for some reason, and i dont fully understand why. I dont think its just because of Twilight. I mean, yeah she has some specific mannerisms and whatnot that tend to come out in her performances (which was definitely amplified by her characterization in Twilight), but so does almost every other actor/actress (I'll use "actor" as a gender neutral term from this point on). People who are naturally charming and charismatic will almost always have a natural charm abd charisma on screen, regardless of the character they're playing, and those actors are often praised. People who have a bit of awkwardness to them (like Kristen Stewart) will almost always have a bit of awkwardness to them when on screen, yet it seems to be off-putting to a lot of people for some reason. It's the same thing, just opposite. Even the greatest actors cannot fully erase their identity and transform themselves into a completely different person for roles. Thats just not realistic, and a big part of the reason why even the highest paid and most popular actors still get "typecast" into certain types of roles. That was very rambling, but hopefully it nade some amount of sense lol

@@BetterWithBob I'm glad! I tend to type out very long-winded comments, and sometimes read them back and think "uhh did that even get my point across?" Haha.
Anyways, I'm a fairly newer subscriber, but I love your videos! Your take on such things is very refreshing, and I particularly love how you say things like "let's like something for what it is, instead of just saying it's bad for something it's not trying to be" (paraphrasing again obviously, but you know what I mean). I like a lot of the movies/shows I've seen you talk about, and the way you word things makes a lot more sense than something I'd probably come up with when trying to explain why.
Also, I know you've mentioned you were more into Charmed than Buffy, but I'd LOVE to see some Buffy content from your perspective ❤️

Sadly, Kristen Stewart got so much bad press because of her "bland" way of acting in Twilight, and then later on, her affair with the married man and all that just added on to people's irrational hatred. The funny thing is, her so called bland acting in Twilight is actually pretty accurate to book Bella. But since when has that ever mattered to angry internet people? Some people also really, really hate the books, and transfer that hatred to the actress playing Bella. The Twilight fandom can be as all fandoms: quite scary sometimes.

      >>for some reason
Misogyny. No, really. A lot of the early twilight hate was simply because it was something that teen girls liked, which automatically meant it was bad, for a lot of people. That just translated into Kristen Steward hate because she was so inextricably connected to it. Nvm that Twilight was bad because it was *bad* , and based on awful, abuse-glorifying, sexist nonsense, not because it appealed to teen girls, and that Stewart was bland and boring in that movie because the main character has as much personality as a plank of wood (of course, her occasional overacting when allowed to show some emotion didn't help matters... I recall the second movie being particularly bad at that.)

Yeah, some parts were definitely misogynistic. That, sadly, always happen when something written for female audiences become wildly popular. Over and over again. Just look at what some people say about Barbie's success. Are there some valid critique out there? Yep, but so much misogyny, too.
That Twilight was written for female teens didn't work in its favor with people like that. To say the least.

Hi!! I love your videos, it's feels very special to hear you bringing love to movies I loved all my life but weren't considered "good" or worthy of serious critic. I've always had to hear that the movies I like are "shallow" "only blockbusters" "mainstream", and no one actually takes the time to hear my reasons and consider (A.k.a my sister, the 'oscar winning deems it all worthy"/fantasy, animation its not to be considered ever kind of movie fan).
So when I watched your video about the Mummy, my all-time favorite/know the lines by heart/am probably queer because of Evy, I was beyond delighted. And then again about Van Helsing which I rented a heretic amount of times as a kid.
I always wondered if I was the only one seeing something in these movies or my judgement was kinda questionable (it probably is), so I just wanna say thank you, for your patience and hard work to make these videos, it makes me happy and I feel validated in a way!
Also, I don't know if you ever saw or are interested in like Brother Bear (the Disney jewel forgot at the bottom of the tartarus), Waterworld (dystopia at it's best without needing a YA hero and dictating governmental system), and last but definitely not least Interview with the vampire and its adaptations, although a 12 episode 1 hour long each would be necessary to talk about only the first book, well, if you are then i would love to hear what you have to say about them, and if not, take them as recommendations!
Again, thank you and hugs from Brazil!!
