    The Crown is most definitely not historically accurate. The producers take actual events and often either distort them with gross exaggerations or create a story that is a totally fictious construction. Perhaps the overarching feeling of the emotional hardships and sacrifices of monarchy is reflective of the truth, but no one should watch this show thinking they are always seeing historically accurate depictions of events in Queen Elizabeth's reign.

    Band of Brothers vs Saving Private Ryan. Different but equally compelling. However, I cannot ever watch SPR again, despite its brilliance. There are too many scenes (especially the murder of the Jewish soldier by the Nazi in the tower) that I find particularly traumatizing. Simply cannot go there again.

    Gotta say, I'm so freaking happy to someone else who recommends Canal+'s Borgia: Faith and Fear! Years ago I wrote the AntiWhiteQueen blog and I did a post comparing it to the Showtime The Borgias show, which was a Michael Hirst production. For me, Borgia was the superior show. While there were chunks of it that weren't historical or I thought went too far (Lucretia killing Juan...), the part of it that won me over was the accuracy of the brutality, such things would never be permitted in a Hirst production! I was not taken with the acting, but I appreciated that they cast actors who closely resembled the known appearances of those people- I'm sorry, Jeremy Irons is a fantastic actor but in no way shape or form does he in any way resemble Rodrigo Borgia! According to the production, they had most of the actors use their real accents to "represent the melting pot that was Rome," with the exception of Cesare who is actually Irish but took on an American accent for some reason. While I think that's a noble idea, it doesn't really work in practice when an entire family have completely different accents from each other!
    To this day, it is the blog post with the most contention. Though I stopped writing it when I became pregnant with my son and didn't have the energy to keep going, about a year ago that post got tagged in another blog that was essentially gate-keeping (it was on how unless you finished college and have a degree in the topic, you have no business discussing topics that interest you- just the worst kind of elitist garbage), and the author says about my opinion that Borgia is better as "it isn't," while not being a trained historian herself. It almost made me want to take it up again out of spite!
    I have not rewatched Borgia in many years. It was taken on by Netflix in the last season, but in the last few years it has only been available in Europe. I check periodically, and right now it's only available for purchase on Apple TV, which I don't have. I miss it!!

    The Crown is good fun, but not exactly accurate. As pointed out by others it's Saving Private Ryan promo reel being used when talking about BoB.
    Rome deserves a place on the list even if the last season became very rushed story wise (script for 2 seasons pressed into one as the show was being cancelled). I also prefer The Borgias over Borgia, but can't really tell you why
    Oh and the first couple of seasons of Vikings are also heavily inspired by the old Norse sagas. If you haven't read the sagas I imagine the show loses some value
    Having said all that my first and only true love in historical shows is "I, Claudius"

      @Basauri.48970 Місяць тому

      Although _I, Claudius_ was a wonderfully acted and incredibly entertaining show, it could never be considered historically accurate. Just like _The Crown_ it follows the events surrounding the characters; the rest is highly fictionalised given that it's base source, the homonimous novel by Rupert Graves, is not a reliable material either.

    The Borgias is nothing but soft porn and violence in velvet clothes... so if that is your thing.... for intellectuals, the original Masterpiece Theater from the 70s Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson is the best Historical drama series of all time, no sex, no violence, no frills, just satisfying characters and dialogue.

    • @LizRealGirlBeauty
      @LizRealGirlBeauty 2 роки тому +2

      The Borgias was a Michael Hirst production on Showtime, Borgia- Faith & Fear was originally produced by Canal+ and then joined with Netflix in season 3. They are two completely different productions. The Borgias is a typical Hirst production, with a rose-tint to it and superior acting but playing fast and loose with facts (it is easily comparable to The Tudors, of which he "borrowed" part of the opener with H8 running his finger down AB's neck, which always irritated me- his lazy can you be?!). Borgia is dark, gritty and much more brutal, but the nudity and violence are never made light of, nor turned away from. The public executions are incredibly realistic, almost too much at times. Borgia definitely handles Lucretia better, showing her growing into a strong, popular noble wife, just as she actually was.
      Plus, no incest.

    • @stephanieking4444
      @stephanieking4444 Рік тому

      The show mentioned in the list is not "The Borgias" featuring Jeremy Irons. It's "Borgia", a canal+ production led by a US director featuring a cast with different European accents. I agree that Borgia is closer to historical accuracy than The Borgias when it comes to characters looks,ages and general chronology.
      I really like the show and can't understand why so many commentators slated it because of the variety of accents. Accent is a superficial matter compared to trying to convey accurate fact based story telling.
      Borgia focused on the depth of storytelling, whilst The Borgias focused on the superficial crowd pleasing elements of storytelling
