Thank you for the tip about the science museum! I had no idea! Next time I am in London I will have to plan it to be at the end of the month so I can experience it.
Watching this almost ten years later, I think someone could do "Breaking the News" nowadays if the network/local news station ran the game. A special edition of the midday news, where the rules are briefly explained at the top (no obscene gestures or clothing, no playing on serious stories, no interaction with the reporting team, no bothering other stations' staff, etc, and if you break any of these rules your points are forfeit), a website or app where you can register an account to play and featuring a map of locations where eligible stories are being shot, a special ticker at the lower third of the screen giving score updates, winner gets an interview on the evening news and maybe a small cash prize, that sort of thing. Justified financially by saying that the broadcast should have a higher viewership than usual because of all the background shenanigans, so they can charge more for ad time/have a constant rolling sponsorship in a corner of the screen. I don't know if all the math would work out the way I'm thinking, but it sure would be cool.
I don't get why you think it would be so despicable to do a "break the news" style video again. If all you do is stand in the background and give a quick thumbs up or some other 2 second "hey this is me" gesture, how is that so bad? I feel like it doesn't ruin the shot as long as you don't linger and don't try to really draw attention away from the news for more than one moment.

+Matt Gray Cheater
+Tom Scott THIRD
+Tom Scott Just watched Breaking the News, with the Top Gear theme music dubbed over the intro and just as I thought it couldn't get any better. It did.
Neat how the automatically generated subs understand your very clear "and I'm Tom" as "I'm Charlotte". Has anybody else noticed this?
We need breaking the news 6 years later 4 years later
Want to feel old?
Wait.
Don't worry about going off on one! Nobody minds travel stories if they are entertaining. Great vid guy and great format. Look forward to the next one!
the wife and I have been watching old episodes and had just watched that one, then I check my feed and this is here! Random
I don't klnow how I've gone this month and missed half your videos but dam my evening just improved XD
hey, ever though about putting these on some kind of podcast service? I love these, but I'm skipping them a lot since I can't just watch 18 min while sitting at the computer, but would love to have you guys talk in my ear when I'm commuting!
The White Piano Key Download a mp3 or just play the video?
”breaking the news, six years later, six years later" sounds fun!
"Really funny when you're a student" I guess that's why I love the video so much! This is probably the best episode of Park Bench I'll ever watch. Shame you won't be making another but I get your points. Maybe you could think up another similar challenge which doesn't risk being arrested?!
+Mike Crilly Why would they be arrested?
+EclecticBuddha I guess America's just like that.
Lol it's not. You could if you were trying to steal the mic or something but we have a long, proud history of being a goof in the background of cameras. Just look at all of the FHRITP videos. Aside from some huffy reporters, its all good. Edit: Not the original FHRITP, its fake, but plenty of copycats.
I love the horrified expression Matt has when the math clicks and he realizes there are adults out there who were born in a time where google has always been there
Tom: there are few more depressing words that go together than Luton Travelodge
Me: Slough Travelodge.
Yes we have stayed there and it was for three nights.
Am i the only one who noticed @TomScott that he HAD a camera phone in 2009 (Breaking the news??)
+xserv4real Not my cameraphone! Borrowed it from our camera operator early on in the shoot when mine died...
Matt and Tom Worth a try ;-) but then? Matt had an iPhone?
Dont put spoons in quotation Marks.
almost time for “The Park Bench: 6 Years Later”
I had to smile when you mentioned that something was 7 to 8 years ago and you were getting old. Try being pre- calculator, cassette tape, VHS tape, Moon landing, and pre Nixon. I love your show.
Breaking The News, Six Years Later, Six Years Later
I don't think I've ever seen Tom this giggly
It's been another 6 years
Talking about being pre-Google reminds me of doing old projects in middle school, collating research from Yahoo, Dogpile, Geocities, and AskJeeves...
I just fuckin lost it at "Créme de la Crematorium" for some morbid reason.
This is very quickly becoming my favourite video of each week. Nice work guys!
I think the closest thing to a national 'chain pub' is probably Buffalo Wild Wings. Most bars, pubs, etc are small mom and pops or very small regional chains.
I think that is still the best video on youtube, so retro, so amazing!
If you ever feel hard done by remember Tom Scott went grey in his twenties.
Poor Tom😞
He is still the best UA-camr on the platform though
Hey, at least he still has hair, unlike EpicLloyd, who, well, is bald now.. It fits him tho!
Whereas Matt has been Gray for years
I have seen both videos like 5 times and I cannot stop watching...
its been another 6 years
Listening to breaking news from six years previous, 5 years after that!
Tom, you shouldn't be embarrassed about the ponytail. It was cool.
Thank you for the tip about the science museum! I had no idea! Next time I am in London I will have to plan it to be at the end of the month so I can experience it.
Breaking The News, Six Years Later... Six Years Later
Decade since that came out! God I feel old.
Now it’s time for:
Breaking the news, six years later six years later
The older video is a lot of fun to watch too! Thanks!
1:20 Phones have had cameras for a long time. Flip-phones had cameras!
Micah Philson “cameras” 45 seconds of 3gv mpeg1 hardly counts.
Thank you guys, now *I* feel old.
live in luton, im so sorry for the travellodge. please forgive us
Watching this almost ten years later, I think someone could do "Breaking the News" nowadays if the network/local news station ran the game.
