  • In this before and after video for our channel DIY Doll Artist we restore a beautiful 70 year old vintage American Character Sweet Sue bride walking doll. She has her original bridal dress and saran wig. She is 23" tall a big girl. She was given to use to restore and restores well. she is a hard plastic doll and I show how I clean her. I also show that she has 2 metal prongs that keep her head attached and make it possible to remove it. She has three cracks, 2 in her head and 1 on her thigh and I am successful at restoring them. You can see other before and after videos and tutorials showing the specific techniques I use in restoring vintage dolls on my channel @DIY Doll Artist. Here are some links to those videos and some of the products I use in my restorations.

      why thank you . that was kind of you to say. part two will come but it will be awhile. Doctors orders I need to rest for a bit. It promises to be a great part two though.😉

      We love that dress too. We ran across it at a craft show at Christmas time. There was no way I was leaving that place without that dress. I had the lady make one for my best friend now of 61 years. But that was a couple of decades ago.❤️ I’m happy you like that dress too. It now permanently belongs to this doll.😉

    🙋‍♀️❤️. LOVELY Makeover as always. I didn't mind the head wobble. It looked kind of lifelike!

      thank you l’m so glad you enjoyed her. The reason I didn’t leave her head moving back and forth was I didn’t think it was meant to do that and because it reminded me of those bobble head things people buy. But I noticed the same thing you did. She did and maybe still does look a little life like. 🥰

    I so enjoyed watching this one. I love these old dolls but have been afraid to tackle the walkers. Thanks. I always learn from you both.

      I’m so happy you enjoyed this one. But be careful not all the walkers are made the same way . Toni’s are not made like these last two walkers we did. Toni’s are a bit harder to work with than these last two. If you have any questions about fixing different types of walkers I will help if I can.🥰

      Iloveyour videos so much. I am 77 yo and grew up loving dolls. I kept all of mine and most of my sisters. I am a retired nurse and I'm back at "fixing" my dolls. I guess I'm still nursing. You all are the best. I watch them and always learn something new.

    Her face really looked like it came back to life! A few months ago, I saw a large sweet sue doll in a wedding dress, I don’t remember the small details but I wonder if it could be the same one. Not likely but fun to imagine! That doll looks so much better!!! Thanks for another swell video!

      Hi! No it was not the same one. This doll came from her owner to be fixed then to live here because she had no one that wanted her. well she’s very wanted here! I’m so glad you liked the way she came out. But this is only part one. There will be a part Two about the restoration of her original dress and wig. It’s always nice to hear from you.❤️🥰. we hope all is well with you.😘

    Aww! What a beautiful transformation. The dress fit like it was made for her! I got the nerve to repair a cracked Mary Hartline from watching your show! I would love to see how you repair the wig as I have wig problems myself. I am at a loss for how to resolve wig problems--I've found broken threads and disintegrating wig caps and I don't know what all. Also would love to see every bit of Chantae's touch ups for the face and matching paint for painting the crack repair if you are ever casting about wondering "what can we do next?" You guys are tops and we love watching you. Laura and Connie (my 88 year old Mother). P.S: Happy Mother's Day! Your video was a wonderful start to our Mother's Day!

      We are going to address the wig problems on a sweet Sue coming up soon. But will address it more fully in the Part 2 of this video on her original Saran wig. But that a ways down the line. Chantae would like to address the face painting but has to figure out how. It’s very complicated and is very different for Chantae and she’s an artist.Matching colors is very difficult And getting the strokes just right is something that is perfected over time. But we will try to show something that might help. Chantae is just now becoming more comfortable with her work on the dolls. so you can see why we hesitate. way to go! on fixing your Mary Hartline ! That’s the whole reason for this Channel 🥰 we are so happy you enjoy the videos and a very very very Happy Mother’s Day to you all ! Love Sharon and Chantae❤️😘

      @@DIYDollArtist Great news! I'm looking forward to learning more from you! I'd like to watch Chantae work her magic, even if she was not teaching it! A friend and I paint too (not as well as Chantae, I'm sure) but we watched the Christmas ornament tutorial she did and loved it! Keep on keeping on and I hope you are feeling great!

    It would be helpful to see how to take the head off and put it back on. Thank you!

      I’m in total agreement with you. But we needed one more person to help to be able to film it and we only had two people available at that time. We had to put the rod with the two prongs through the two holes in her head. it’s was hard to do because her body blocked our vision. so had to put the camera down so someone could hold the flash light in just the right way but it was still hit or miss. So sorry if you come across a doll made that way you will see what to do. If you need help just ask and we will walk you through it.🥰

    How was the original wig unsalvageable? It looked filthy is all. By replacing it with a cheap new wig you have lowered the doll's value.

    • @DIYDollArtist
      @DIYDollArtist  2 місяці тому +1

      I always appreciate hearing other’s thoughts about our videos. I don’t know if you watched the whole video or not. We never said that it was unsalvageable. We said because it would need extensive work to restore it that because of my health it would take a bit to take on that project. The wig cap was already fragile and having to remove it to restore the doll made its restoration even more involved. That’s why we said in the video that the restoration of the wig and dress would be a part two video. We will use that wig to teach others how to restore damaged wigs instead of throwing them away. we will do something similar with restoring vintage textiles instead of people them away. As to her value ,she is priceless. She was sent here by her owner to be repaired and to have a permanent home though out our generations. For the time being we choose a vintage Dynel wig for that is the closest to her era. Cheap is relative to one’s personal perspective. We feel we did right by her by not putting a cheap wig on her.

      They said the wig was a temporary replacement so she didn't have to wait around bald-headed while they work on and film extensive repairs to the original. They are exceedingly careful about retaining the original doll, which is one of the many reasons I'm such a devoted fan. For example: they don't replace bad lace, they hide it with lace over top so that the original is preserved. They do not cut unraveled fabric from tags so as to leave them original.
