- Restoration of my other favorite scene from the thief and the cobbler. This restoration was a passion project and I wanted restore each one the original sources for each scene. The song playing during the zoom out is constructed from both versions of the workprint Williams and Calvert. Ai assisted tools were used to upres both the video and audio then the majority of the restoration was done frame by frame manually.

It's funny to think how ZigZag claimed he could play people like playing cards.
Because once he revealed the Golden Balls to One Eye he essentially revealed his entire hand.
Since if all One Eye needed to seize the Golden Land *was* the Golden Balls...
..What would he need ZigZag for?
He did have at least some strategic value in getting the Golden Balls since he’s an insider to the king’s court. One Eye can’t exactly march in there and take it on their own
The One-Eye, after hearing ZigZag give that whole long-winded spiel of his, simply refers back to what he said at the beginning about "charming beasts" and puts it to the test immediately.
"Throw him to the alligators."
I don't blame Fido for his reaction, not one bit.

It actually makes sense. Zigzag comes making various claims of power that can just be parlor tricks or unverifiable, and the banner trick is a pretty unimpressive attempt at showmanship & flattery. He pretty much hands him the key to victory, so he's basically useless now (save maybe for his skills as a spy and infiltrator, if One-Eye cares for such things). But if he can "charm beasts" as he claimed, then he proves he MIGHT have some genuine power and thus could be of use for future plots.
One-Eye, for a brute, made cunning test. Either he dies and is useless, or he succeeds and can be used in future campaigns. One-Eye loses nothing either way.
@@DeathMessenger1988also helps that when he said he controls the decks, he was literally doing tricks with an actual deck of playing card and nearly spilled them all and while he did grab them in time, if he can’t even control basic playing cards, can he even be sure he can actually control people?
This is surreal. It feels close to an alternate reality where the film was finished.

@@tuckernutter not the way it was supposed to. The version they ended up releasing was altered from what the film was supposed to be so they could rush it to release.

I kinda like this version, cuz with the music in the background it makes it sound like ZigZag is trying to talk over the music, like he's yelling for a reason, trying desperately to keep the Mighty One Eye's attention. But like, you can clearly see he is surrounded by all manner of music and entertainment and wealth and indulgences, and he's STILL BORED.
Aye aye aye, he's spoiled.
To be fair he probably hasn't had a good conquering in ages thanks to those 3 drag-i mean magic balls. I'd be bored too at that point.

I remember seeing this scene for the first time in the earlier Recobbled edits and I was stunned by the panning shot starting from Zigzag to reveal all the chaos that was going on in front of him, giving him reason to look so stunned but a second later I was blown away by the reveal that the whole thing was a shot directly from One Eye's POV, ending with his singular eye and finally giving him a proper introduction in full as he scowls at Zigzag. It's a marvelous shot.
Everytime I see this scene pop up I have to watch it multiple times, it's such a feast for the eyes.
They may not have finished the whole movie, but damn they accomplished truly amazing feats of animation in the attempt

If your an animator, this film is an animation feat, and it’s not even finished and probably never will be. The animation is so good that when I first saw it, it got me to love animation and become an animator. This is PEAK animation, and if this came out it would be revolutionary, even now. This animator also wrote the Animator’s Survival Kit, and if you read the book you can tell this guy made it.
One of the best books I've read! I learned a lot from Richard's novel.

One Eye has great taste in women, and furniture for that matter
Not only is the animation beautiful, but I love how it perfectly conveys its message without spelling it out.
Up to this point, Zigzag is the big bad. But in reality we’ve only seen him fool and intimidate peasants and politicians. Now here he is dealing REAL evil.
It’s like a highschool football player going into the NFL.
While this is a beautiful restoration, I will admit the lack of certain sfx weirds my brain out like not hearing Zig-Zag’s foot slamming into the floor or the sound of birds wings flapping. But given the insane visual and audio restoration ya did. That critique is honestly a nitpick. Ya did fucking great! (Plus idk what lead to those sfx being cut either.)

The scene of him entering the camp only to realize we’re seeing it from One Eye’s POV has got to be one of the best cinematic moments ever put on film.

This single scene was condensed with so much skill and craftmanship. Mr. William's work hopefully will inspire more. Long live the Iron Age of new artists.
It genuinely hurts how expressive this animation is. The pure meekness and sadness you can feel from poor Fido sheepishly asking for food at 0:32 always makes me feel so bad for the little guy, he's just so cute and ZigZag does NOT deserve him

If you notice the skulls, the ones lining the roads leading into the tent of the Great One Eye, they only have one eyesocket!
In other words, they seem to be One-Eye-skulls! It also appears to indicate that with one entirely fused or degenerated orbit (eye cavity), the One Eyes are really, as the name suggests, one-eyed. I.e., they are not just all squinting to mimic their master but really are missing an eye!
Makes me wonder, together with skin coloration and tooth-profilation, whether or not they are a separate species from humans.
Dude had some audacity using their flag for a magic trick and then asking for a job.
Gotta love the camp opening score....man that pretty cool and 4k restoration!
I hope one day we can watch the movie as it was intended to be, complete and keeping this awesome animation.
Impossible, sadly. Richard Williams passed away, and without him any further work on the film would just be fan fiction essentially.
I wonder, did King One Eye wanted Zig Zag to be thrown to the alligators, since he saw no practical use for him, or was he just testing Zig Zag, to see if he could prove that he was useful?

I believe the people who made Aladdin even said that they were "inspired" by the Thief and the Cobbler clips.
Of course...being trapped in development hell for literal decades meant this film never had any chance to be anything even remotely as successful as Aladdin.
This is terrific work. It makes me want to rewatch the original film. Thank you for sharing your passion project with the world, and letting us enjoy Williams' work anew.

Garrett doesn't like what I do. I cut alot of the rougher bit get rid of noise and grain sharpen and do lots of dust masking. Too impure for his cuts
If you saw this film as a child like I did! You also now randomly see bright colors while running errands too! 😭
Makes me wish that the movie was released in 4K, I think an HDR treatment would work wonders for the black levels in the background.
There were multiple times looking at King One Eye where I’d forget the throne was women, and that the orbs were not an ornate halo structure on his armor. Which resembles something out of Buddhism I think? Maybe Hinduism? Or maybe some manner of Japanese Yokai? Anyways, that it a wonderful blending of imagery there

I find it interesting that One Eye focuses on the fact that Zigzag can charm beasts. It seems that he is the kind of warlord that prefers to win his force with brute strength rather than with deception and slight of hand.
One Eye's voice is very menacing. I like it.

I have never heard the music on this scene extended for this long. Ever since i was first captivated by that shot leading to King One Eye's face, I always wondered if the backing music was production music for this film or taken from somewhere else like it does with the Scherezade Suite in other moments of the film.

Hmm, this restoration seems to suffer from some fairly severe jump-nudges, like in the 1:00 transition, whereas the original is completely smooth.

i didn't notice until watching this the 100th time. but the camp of the one eye is propped up by the War Machine. that was what Zig Zag was looking at with such fear in his eyes. you can even see its 5 legs in the one eyes reflection
