1) Open Settings on your iOS device
2) Scroll down to Facetime and select it
3) Click the slider switch to disable (should be gray, not green)

Just found a tweet reporting this bug to Apple on the 20th and it fell on deaf ears. Only 1 hour ago did Apple disable the Facetime conferencing server preventing this bug from working until they can fix it. That means they knew about this for 8 days and it was public for 8 days during which time literally thousands of people could have been spied on and recorded doing or saying who knows what. This looks really really really bad for Apple at this point and I suspect they are going to have some heavy lawsuits on their hands.
i freaking love how apple always has these kinds of problems. either the phones disconnect from service is you hold them like a normal phone, or you can basically turn the users device into a spy device...
Does this apply to regular FaceTime?? It’s clearly FaceTime conferencing is compromised...

Everyone says it is from update 12.1 and newer does that mean it doesnt work on any update prior to ios 12 like 11 and older?
Please tell everyone you can reach online to disable Facetime until Apple iOS 12.4 releases later this week with a fix for this issue. I just confirmed that the latest version available when I made this video which is 12.3 doesn't fix the issue. Also, some people are saying this bug only works if the person on the other side dismisses the call with the physical volume buttons. I can assure you that after heavily testing this myself on iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and iPhone X and iPad Pro (ver 1) I didn't have to touch the device at all to gain control of it's audio and video from the device initiating the call. The only way to protect yourself against this is to turn the phone physically off or disable Facetime by using my directions in the video description. [EXPAND FOR UPDATES]

Apple disabled the Facetime conferencing servers so now when you add yourself to the call it doesn't appear to work. This is a workaround until they can fix the bug in iOS 12.1.4 but it should protect people. I confirmed that it does work however you can no longer add more people to the Facetime call as a result. I still recommend you keep Facetime disabled until a confirmed update is released at the device level in case they enable the conference servers accidentally without the fix in place.

Since u ur a software developer, I was wonder if u know how to lunch a program at initial log in into windows for a specific user using the "shell" scrip found in regedit in windows? I know that it changes the overall log in into windows but I was wonder if there's a way to set it up for a user n not everyone in the same comp. This is why I jailbreak my iPhone a patch was released on Cydia on the 21st on the recent changes.

Yes, and I'm sure it has been already. I tested it on my buddy Greg and was able to listen to audio and video without him being aware of it. I even called him afterward and he didn't believe me so I told him how to do it back to me. Needless to say he disabled facetime immediately after that and so did his wife.

I have both front and rear camera with a little hatch on it so i can still take pics when i need to.
@Jesse James I understand the privacy thing trust me. I just feel like at this point it's almost a lost cause. I feel if "big brother" wants to watch you, "he" will. That might be a bit paranoid but I feel society has changed with people already pouring their lives out via social media. However when it comes to a blatant security flaw like this that allows a person to person attack it's definitely not right.

Just a clarification: current iOS version is 12.1.3 as I just updated from 12.1.2 just now.
Also, if you followed this then checked for updates between 12.1.2 and 12.1.3, the update WILL NOT turn FaceTime back on.
Why do I say this? Because some updates turn stuff on even when you have turned it off. This ISN'T one of those cases.

Your regular Apple buff probably cares about production quality, when it comes to stuff like this I absolutely don't.
I wonder if this could've affected older iOS devices as well. All iOS does in this scenario is check if FaceTime has permissions to access the camera and mic. Big shock, it does by default.
