Probably the best drummer I've ever heard. So he's not a poser and makes it look effortless, you tend to underestimate just how good he is. He doesn't play crap he's there to compliment the music not overpower it, it's a gift. Grateful he's back. Big fan of the Pumpkins and Jimmy.
@@thomasedmundrichards Yea i would say so. Maybe not in drum circles, but i only hear of 4 drummers. Bonham, Neil Pert, Danny Carey, and Travis Barker.
Jimmy is looking/sounding real good; and what a good speaker ! Liked how much he articulated about the sound, and broke that down. So glad he is still happy rocking it ! !
Hi saw the smashing pumpkins last night in Indianapolis do a 3 1/2 hour set. Jimmy was so precise and so technical and so dynamic that it blew my mind. I’ve been playing drums for 30 years and I haven’t seen that much perfection before. There’s always little things that I catch a concert where the drummer screws up or miss is a cue or something like that but Jimmy was on top of it the entire 3 1/2 hours set. He did three solos last night. Small mid song solos and they were mesmerizing! Their stage show was amazing as well. Those drums and cymbals sounded amazing!
@@RM-rm3hk He really, REALLY does have that much impact on the SP sound. I've still really liked the albums that he wasn't playing on, but wow...what a home-run difference WITH his unique musicianship.
Thing is, Dave Grohl knows how to serve the song, which is always more important than showing off your chops. Jimmy does that too, but coming from a jazz background i think he has more swing, gotta have that swing sun.
lol Dave Grohl was your first thought? Only disrespect is that you're comparing the two. Jimmy is on a different planet. It's amazing he even ended up with the Pumpkins as few other alt rock drummers (any?) of that era had his technical ability. Part of what made SP so unique and still a great band, even as tastes evolve.
One of my all time favourtie drummers. Not only is he a stellar drummer, but he is a fantastic musician who serves the song while still adding flavour and dynamics from behind the kit.
The only drummer I've ever heard can accentuate vocal and guitar lines simultaneously. This man is mythical; to say the least. I've always said when it comes down to it; as long as you have Jimmy with Billy, then you'll always have The Pumpkins.
I’m a 38 year old drummer and Jimmy is the first person I remember hearing about struggling with addiction. Glad to see him healthy and killing it as always
The ending of Hummer has some fantastic fills. I'm not a drummer but I think Jimmy's unique among rock drummers, probably because he plays more like a jazz drummer.
Jimmy is a true master of his craft, you can tell just listening to him talk about it. Truly articulate, understands what a drummer should do and knows how to elevate what could be a mundane song, into a complete masterpiece.
I’m in my 50’s and been drumming since I was 11. There have been countless drummers over the years who have made a difference in my playing and Jimmy has remained my goto for inspiration for style and complexity. Jimmy you are amazing. Thank you for your time, talent and willingness to never give up!!
Wow. Brilliant player I have never heard of before. He says during the interview he doesn’t want to blow chops all over the material and that’s evident in his playing here; tasty and impeccable and effortless not showing off. Brilliant.
Check out the Pumpkins' first album Gish -- "Suffer" through "Tristessa" for particular drum standouts. Power meets nuance -- I'm not even a drummer and I can sing every drum hit on this album haha!
He is so fluid - but also manages to grove at the same time. Plus he really controls the dynamics of all the drums and cymbals so that they breathe and work together beautifully. Nice player!
absolutely makes the Pumpkins for me....couldn't really get behind the albums without him....what a backbone to have in a band!! I could listen to Jimmy Chamberlain and Danny Carey all day everyday
Jimmy is the best! The Smashing Pumpkins got me through high-school. Saw them live on their melancholy and the infinite sadness tour. One of the best shows and nights of my life!
Just a real force of nature. Even though I'm just a fan of the Pumpkins and a guitarist by interest.....I could listen to Jimmy talk drums all day. I love people who unburdened by talent, regardless of the pursuit. They make the complex seem simple and the unconsidered, real. Hope he never stops. One of the true greats.
Started drumming at age 12, Bonham was my idol in the early years but once I heard and studied and played along to Jimmy, I realized he was the drummer I wanted to emulate most. His chops are incredible, he has power, strength, but mixes in delicate jazzy licks, it's just the perfect style to me. I can't even pull off some of his fills 100% of the time, truly admire his talent.
Saw them in Tampa! Didn't even realize it was a three hour show, I was so completely into it. Just phenomenal show with everyone in perfect form, especially JImmy. He makes the band, along with Iha obviously. The difference is staggering between the Real Deal and the Pumpkins Cover Band. Did they do the full Stairway to Heaven and Ground Control... and Landslide there?
When the album Gish came out, I fell in love with The Smashing Pumpkins. But it was mainly because of the drums who made the sound that really did it for me. As a drummer, Jimmy is a big inspiration for me. But I’m not even half his level.

Jimmy chamberlain is a “musicians drummer”. A true professional glad to see him healthy and playing better than ever 👍
the contemporary version of Neil Peart, impressive
+1! He absolutely is, and his performances scream that. His combo of touch, nuance, and rocking crush is a force to be reckoned with.
How dare you compare Neil Peart to Jimmy? Not even in the same conversation. Jimmy is light years better, Neil is very overrated IMO
He's a jazz drummer trapped in a rock band. Without Jimmy, SP would've been a boring noisy alternative band.
@dgonzalezm145 what are you on? I want some!
This is one of the best drummers alive at this moment. I should point out, he has been this good for 20 plus years. All skills, no hype.
true words. If Billy Let him have more of a word in the pumpkins musical direction they might still be making good music
30 years*
He was that good before The Smashing Pumpkins. Dude is a jazz drummer that happens to be famous for playing alternative rock music.
30 plus
His drums at the end of Everlasting Gaze are just absolutely mental.
Yes, his jazz background is so obvious on the entire song, still it fits perfectly with the metal distortion riffs.
Mental or metal
Geek USA is a total drum workout.
My favorite drummer. I love the way he injects jazz elements into big rock rythms. His drum sound is also amazing
Amen sista!
A true original, and he sounds even better now than ever, and ALWAYS with his own sound. Jimmy’s an artist
Such a recognizable signature touch. One of the greats of all time.

My favorite drummer. Few drummers are a significant part of a band’s sound, and he is one.
Even Billy Corgan, a noted ego maniac, gives Jimmy credit for how influential he is on their sound.
No disrespect to Dave Grohl, I love his force. But I'll take Jimmy Chamberlin all day every day.

It was fucking crazy seeing him live a few days ago. He laid down some of the cleanest chops I've ever heard with barely any effort.
It's insane to see them live in Montreal and hear the drums be that close to the album sound. Jimmy didn't need production to shine. He's so good.
