Awesome video! My son introduced me to the world of Jiu-Jitsu when I was 52 yrs old and I've never looked back. I'm now (59yrs) a blue belt and coach. Age is just a number!🧓💪🤙
GSP grew up doing Karate and never wrestled in high school or college. Yet, he became known as one of the greatest wrestlers in MMA. Forget the nay sayers. You wanna wrestle? Then go on and get some wrestling. Regardless of how far you go, you'll be a better athlete and fighter for it. Also, every year there is the US Open Veterans / Masters wrestling in Vegas. Lots of guys that didn't grow up wrestling learned and trained hard enough to become competitive. Start a club that goes out every year and competes at that tournament.
Yes, willpower is what will outweigh experience sometimes, wanting something bad enough will reward you if the same amount of work goes behind it , I started wrestling at 22, and have fallen in love with the sport, I train 3-4 times a week under a Canadian coach in Australia, and have guys in our gym that compete internationally, the goal is to get good enough to wrestle people in mma , and I’ll get there, or I’ll die trying
GSP isn't the good example you think he is. He started at 19 at the Montreal Wrestling Club under one of the country's top coaches who produced university, national, and world champs for years before GSP got there and got plenty of time with elite wrestlers.
No shame in learning wrestling late. Started bjj and wrestling sametime mid 30's. Boxed for years and absolutely love wrestling as part of a well rounded fighting game.
I'm 36. Started wrestling for the first time a few years ago, but have now switched to no gi BJJ. I still want to go back and do some more wrestling though, while I'm still "young."
Zachary, you're an inspiration. For most people age is either a barrier or an excuse but it shouldn't be either. After a lifetime in karate starting at 16, I started BJJ the week of my 60th birthday and trained for 3 years reaching middle bluebelt. I got so much out of it and did very well against guys in their 20s. Now almost ten years later I've started boxing and do perfectly well with the sparring. I could only dream of having started BJJ or wrestling at 28 like you did; just a kid. For me all of this throughout my life is me saying NO to 50, 60, 70 and who knows maybe 80 in ten years. All of my friends and family my age and younger think of themselves as old and act old. Your brain is the most important muscle you have and I love that, "Best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, next best day is today." Good luck and stay safe.
I started wrestling at 37. After years in judo and BJJ. Best thing I ever did. I'm now 43. I still wrestle 1-2 times a week. One thing that helped me. Is to learn wrestling as its own sport. Try to win a wrestling match. Switch gears to just wrestling to help your BJJ. Wrestle to become a wrestler. And it will help your BJJ.
I’m also a bjj guy and did not wrestle. Two years ago I started wrestling and fell in love with it. I started when I was 43 and still going strong at 46. Im in San Diego and wrestle under Ricky Lundell. Happy to hear of your success finding somewhere to train.
Man this helps. I'm 23 and just started wrestling. It's not really "hard". The previous martial arts I did would also make me gasp for air and make my legs useless for at least 3 days. So I'm used to the "difficulty". But I was always told by people that I'm too old and all I can really do is just learn wrestling for myself. I would like to get into competitions and go as high as I can with it. Thankfully, I have an excellent coach. Today, I sparred with him for the first time, and he squeezed the life out of me without trying.
@@QuitArchives im in the Netherlands, but im an iranian. In Iran, wrestling is a big deal. I have heard larger cities like Dallas and Houston having it. Either way, you're right about it being a great skill, and I'm blessed to add it to my BJJ game. Thanks for watching!
I was blessed to grow up in California where wrestling is a big sport. Bjj took its place and years of wrestling help a lot. You’re a beast for learning wrestling.
I started wrestling at 22, I’m 23 right now, and out of all MMA disciplines( as I want to be a fighter) wrestling has come to me easier and I’m gettting the hang of it much better than everything else, my coach was a good wrestler from Canada and told me himself that you’re only too old if you believe yourself to be so, I got told on question answering forums that I’m too old and it won’t serve me well in mma as a base because of my age, yet I can be in small scrambles with international level competition In my gym, and defend nearly all takedowns from experienced mma guys that have years over me in the mma class
It’s so important we spread this sport around the country. Who knows how many people like you weren’t given the opportunity in high school. A lot of schools in the south don’t even have a D1 program at all.
I started Jiu-Jitsu halfway through 36. I had NEVER lifted weights or wrestled. I played a few years of soccer with a youth club (not varsity). Grappling was an eye-opener for me. I'm still at it 3 years later.
Wrestled in high school and started late compared to my standard competition that started when they were 7, wanted to make it to regionals when I started, had doubters and haters but it didn’t stop me from achieving my goal of becoming a regional qualifier, keep workin you got it!

I just started wrestling at 33. I do it to be better a catch wrestling. I love it man. I don’t I e ever been this dedicated to anything honestly. I’m gonna compete. I wanna be at D1 level. Shooting for the stars I wanna land on the moon. Also as an adult they have masters and veterans division for wrestling so there is still wrestling to be had. It goes to age 75.
Got my black belt a few months ago. My takedowns were trash so I started a nogi wrestling class. Watching lots of videos and forcing people to drill with me at 35. It's hard as fuck but it's making my jits way better.
As someone that's older and considering starting wrestling in my late 30s I really appreciate this. I did Judo Sambo BJJ but never free Style of Greco Roman after a bad back injury 5 years not being able to grapple I now really want to try wrestling.
I’m 42 now. I have been interested in wrestling and fighting sports since I was 10. I watched the matches on tv and tried to learn the names of the technique/moves performed. my advice to you is to wrestle more in noGi (especially with freestyle wrestlers) to adapt your judo to noGi so you can use it anytime without kimono. And of course you can catch up guys who started young, just work hard and don't skip training days
