Just so there is no confusion. Cory’s commentary on Run The Jewels ‘Oh My Darling’ beat being used, was not a knock at anyone, especially RM. He was just surprised that it was not widely recognized that this was the underpinning of RM’s ‘Joke’. And when reading commentary from other reactors and fans, no one acknowledged it. Yep
Thanks for doing your deep research. I wasn't aware of the beat being used was from The Jewels "Oh My Darling". It's the first time ever hearing of them. I think people should be openminded to not take offense of being corrected with facts. You help educate people who don't have deeper musical history to learn these facts in a non-critical manner. Overall, Joke is still one of my favorite RM raps which shows this other side of who he is. If you listen to his 1st mixtape (RM) verse his 2nd mixtape (Mono), you see his growth as an Artist, which makes you appreciate him even more! His lyricism and genius wordplay shines through in all his music, whether for BTS or his own solo work. I guess you can say that RM is the "front man" due to the fact that he is BTS leader. Especially in Western Markets, since he is the only member who is fluent in English, he does most of the speaking for the group, so he is front and center. You should check out RM Do You (which is the official MV doesn't have English Subtitles and it's hard to find the one which has it, I know I've seen one with it. If I find it I will attach the link). I personally don't like lyric videos. Also, you should check out Augst D's Augst D MV which hits even harder than Daechwita. Here is the link with Eng. Subtitle (cc). ua-cam.com/video/3Y_Eiyg4bfk/v-deo.html
Actually when this song dropped everybody was celebrating because he chose this beat. He doesn't profit off of this song, it's available in SoundCloud for free and not on any other streaming platform. When the actual sample a song they do contact the og and get things cleared for example Jhope chicken noodle soup (he paid more than 3 Million dollars and the song was released for free on soundcloud along with Spotify, no physicals). Agust D's Agust D is also the same case like joke. RM's first mixtape was all homages, he chose his favourite artists and their beats to flow. It was mentioned in articles regarding the same and even on Wikipedia if I'm not wrong. His second mixtape Mono on the other hand is like an album and hence it's available on Spotify completely. It's also a chill mixtape.
If you're watching this video from bangtantv, their official channel, the song is fully credited in the description. I was also curious so I did a quick search and the song was mostly credited everywhere I saw. I'm enjoying your channel and I do appreciate all the research that you do beforehand. I don't know why this one was missed, but I hope you feel better knowing that the song is credited in the description of the video.
Agree with Tanielented - any time BigHit or their artists use a sample/beat from someone, you can bet that they have contacted that person and gotten full permission. They ALWAYS give credit where credit is due. They are quite particular about that.
i still remember that the reason he did this was because people kept saying he didn't know how to rap well or fast. people forget that this is the same RM/Kim Namjoon that was throwing down older and experienced rappers at 13 or 14 at the underground rap scene. like people were terrified of rapping against him, the rap forums were insane. at that age too, he was one of the smartest in the country rankings for studies. like he was a genius day and night, rap or studying. he's awesome.
@@rikhmjustsomeguywithmousta4971 hmmm agree on the fact but as bts isnt kpop in my perspective because of the diverse stuff including joon's joke~ true students of music, bts ♡
oh yeah.. if I'm not mistaken in one of the lyrics of zico or suprem boi; they mocked (sorry) one of the raper (hyung) who was knocked out in rap battle by a 13 yo kid and that kid was RapMon. They talk a lot about it.
@@chx1069 imagine, you getting dissed so hard by runch randa (RM) a teenager who at this point mastered rapping in two languages back to back that you end up laughed at in rap forums. like namjoon was powerful!
@@sixeyesheavens7 😅😅.. It's like "daenggg"... This reaction video made me look back at RM's videos performing underground and before his debut. it makes us missing the previous Namjoon but also very proud that his career is progressing so well. RM's lyrics that are always in my head when there is a lot of criticism are: Triple R, Rap Monster, Runch Randa your Appa🤣🤣🤣 .. Ups we are forget about Largo or just Randa 🤣🤣💜🙏
This is what RM said about choosing to sample this beat: “I normally enjoy Run The Jewels. There were a few songs I had recorded on the beat for Run The Jewels among the songs that weren’t placed on the mixtape. I believe that they make beats really well where the El-P is minimal, but is able to emphasize the auditory effect of raps. There were five song nominees to be used for “Joke,” but all five songs were Run The Jewels' beats. I normally thought that if a chance came to me where I could show off my skills, that I would use Run The Jewels' beats no matter what.” -Genius interview
RM did 9 different flows here. All of RM's work are based on deep lyrics but not Joke. Joke is full of word play. This song was a slap to haters who criticized that he cnt rap fast or flow hard as "he had become an idol rapper" n said his rap was based on only lyricism n delivery. Also mocked him for persuing his career as BTS. Joke was his answers to those so called " rappers" who only spit words like 'bibidi babidi' (basically just saying any word that would go with the rhythm without having any actual meaning). Like that through Joke he showed that he can rap fast but good rap ain't just about speed. Just being fadt doesn't make it meaningful. It was a clap back to haters!
I didn’t think this was an unknown fact. But there are ALOT of baby army these days who may not know things that us older army know, simply because we were around when it came out or soon after.
I'm a 2017 army, don't know if two years after is considered soon after it was released. But I thought this was common knowledge. I agree though that new armys just have so much content to go through that they often miss the earlier stuff and the details. Heck I recently learned of a bunch of collabs mainly Namjoon but also Hobi did back in the day around 2013-2015.
@@daniabelko1382 I think anyone who become a fan around then and before, probably was able to watch more from the beginning on, than new army. The older stuff had so much more details and extras put into everything, it really takes a deep dive to understand the meaning/universes they created back then. Plus (not all) but a lot of new fans seem to really love the new stuff and are probably less likely to be really into their older stuff. Like I prefer everything from the love yourself era back to the beginning over anything after. So I probably know less about the new stuff than I do the old.
RM did credit the original artist of the beat on the official video of this song on their channel BangtanTV. His first mixtape uses a lot of samples and that’s why its on soundcloud instead of Spotify like his later mixtape.
I think he's kind of a different person. I feel "RM" is a younger him who still believed he had to proof himself to others, while "mono" is a still growing but definitely more mature him who just wants to find his true self
It's true that there was a lot of change but when when u look at tracks like Life and Adrift in RM, u can see the signs of mono already. Joon was always kinda philosophical maybe just a tad defensive(as marina said he wanted to prove himself to others) his younger years. Borahae Army. 💜
@@meghanav3450 I agree! While RM did change over the years, there were signs of Mono even in his early work.I wonder what his next mixtape will be like😁
Honestly as newer (pandemic) army I just LOVE that I get to see the guys grow up in their music. You can see where they started and because they put themselves into their music you watch those people learn and grow. Especially RM and Yoongi.
RM is the official leader of BTS, which is a standard thing in K-pop. It’s a role with many responsibilities, including taking the lead in communication with media. He is also the only member who is fluent in English, so he speaks on behalf of the group even more in international interviews.
Joke is always amazing. The word play, underlying meanings and the flow and how it changes - Rm is such a lyrical genius. I haven’t watched the video yet, so I don’t know if you guys discussed this but Joke is supposed to be a kind of satire, mocking rappers who think rapping fast - yet without meaningful lyrics or flow - is cool and better. I think he got hated on from such rappers that he can’t rap fast, but in Joke RM not only proves that he can ( and that he’s better than them at it too (flow switches)) , while mocking those who think it’s cool or can only do just that, but that he can also rap fast with meaning and flow as well. He’s basically showing how he’s on a different level, incomparable mocking haters at the same time. The satire, the wordplay, the flow changes - Joke is absolutely amazing. Anytime I encounter a song or rap that has RMs touch, I’m more often than not amazed. Anyways, I’m sure u guys have a lot of requests already, so I won’t say much, just thanks for the reaction as always guys!!
Since you dig out the rap line of bts. Here's some of the recommendations for you to react. - Hip hop lover ( their story and inspiration why they love hip hop ) - Cypher 1- 4 "rap line " ( response to their haters) - ddeang "rap line" ( a word play that blows your mind tells about their success) - tear "rap line" ( a meaningful raps that talks about the "almost" disbanding of their group) RM -Monster SUGA/AGUST D - 'Agust d' and - 'the last'( talks about his anxiety and depression) J-HOPE - Airplane and 1verse I barely leave a comment but because I like watching your reaction that's why I send you some recommendations to react. Thanks for your time . Have a nice day ahead
You are correct BTS was built around Namjoon and he was the first member. Because he is the leader and fluent in several languages he is the main spokesperson, however he has no problem with any of the other members speaking up. As noted he is brilliant and that is important because he navigates interviewers who have their own agendas. Sometimes those agendas are to get a rise out of them… The thing about RM is he can shut people down (never rudely) and with his knowledge of multiple languages he can later slam you and you not even know what he is saying. He protects his team and as you get to know him you will see how he does this. The other members also fiercely protect RM back it is really a beautiful thing to see. What are are seeing is their duality. RM is laying them out here but when you hear Mono you will see the other side. Borahae 💜💜
Happy Birthday Cory!! 💜💜💜 If you like clever lyrics, you might enjoy DDAENG and UGH, but I would strongly recommend watching along with an explanation from DKDKTV, otherwise it will mostly go over your head.
@@BeardsBoozeBandsBS Yes, Please!! The wordplay in DDAENG will blow your mind and DKDKTV are Koreans that break the lyrics down perfectly. There's a lot of Korean meanings that go over western heads.
it's just so funny bcos Run The Jewels is credited in the music video itself in BangtanTV. There's a credit under, along with the description and hashtags. ig ARMYs just didn't looked it up or it doesn't matter at all bcos our focus is on RM's rap and lyrics. That we're all hype up that he answered all the haters with a savage masterpiece.
A must to read: "Q: There are a few songs that focused on rap techniques. For example, ‘Joke’ is like that. Could you talk about this song? RM: 'Joke' is a song whose lyrics were written with a stream of consciousness. That's why the title is called 'Joke' as well. There's nothing hidden behind the lyrics. It's 500% for the auditory pleasure of rap songs. Since the other songs have messages or emotions placed into them, I felt that it was necessary to add in a refreshing song without any thoughts. I put in a lot of what I believe are rap 'skills'. Q: What’s the reason in choosing ‘Run The Jewels’ as the beat for ‘Joke’? RM: I normally enjoy Run The Jewels. There were a few songs I had recorded on the beat for Run The Jewels among the songs that weren’t placed on the mixtape. I believe that they make beats really well where the El-P is minimal, but is able to emphasize the auditory effect of raps. I thought it was common knowledge around ARMY that this beat was sampled - I know RM gave credits for the song and that’s why this song was never included on streaming sites etc just on Soundcloud :)
It is common knowledge, I feel like most of us who follows the rap line know where all the samples are coming from, especially because they say it themselves when talking about their mixtapes.
I believe the reason why RM's first mixtape is only available on soundcloud and not spotify IS the amount of sampling he used. Unlike his second mixtape Mono, which he wrote, produced and did everything, the first one is filled with him rapping over beats from artists he really liked, like J. Cole. This one in particular like you guys mentioned is sort of a joke like the title says, its a comeback to the people who said he wasn't a real rapper anymore because he left the underground scene and became an idol. Its just word play after word play, flow switches and shit talking. Its basically him saying "yeah you think im not good? Then check this out and see if you can do any better". RM was extremely respected in the underground rap scene in korea, but because he joined an idol group people started talking shit about him "betraying hip hop", so this was his comeback to that. If you want something similar to this coming from Suga, who received the same criticism RM received after joining BTS, i highly recommend his first solo song self titled Agust D, from his also self title first mixtape Agust D. Just look up Agust D - Agust D, really, theres no way of getting it wrong. You will get to see the first Agust D, the blonde one referenced in the Daechwita music video as the mad king and the reason why he was depicted as mad. Just like Joke, Agust D is filled with shit talking and crazy speed, a proof that he is an amazing rapper regardless of what people think of him as an idol and member of BTS. Unlike RM's RM, the entire Agust D mixtape is available on spotify except for this song because of the sampling used, the main one being This Is A Man's World. Really looking forward to your reaction to that.
RM went 11.8 syllables per second and became the 2nd fastest rapper in kpop after his friend Zico. Yes BTS is present because of RM, JK joined BTS by seeing RM, Jhope almost left BTS twice between 2013-15 but RM made him stay and now there’s ofc strong BTS bond. RM is Main Songwriter of BTS, has 99% credits as main songwriter, co composer of all BTS songs since debut.
Yeahh he's the backbone of the group bts..its crazy like you said imagine people impressed by you and started to do something bcs you that good like.jk..man if not for rm there is no jk in these group..imagine from what you said from jk to jhope both of them played hard part on both singing and dancing on the group but still bcs of rm influence himself..man rm is the most i respect and grateful bcs of him now bts is standing still
When he did his mixtape, RM (2015), during that time ARMY was aware. RM especially talked a lot about his first mixtape so most older ARMYs will know. If you had watched this MV on the Bangtan channel, in the description the original artist is listed. However, there are no lyrics for the video. So I hope you understand that most of these fan translation MV are not concerned about informing audiences about the music production. They are only focused on putting out translation videos. It’s really up to fans whether they want to dig deeper on who produced the beat, lyrics, etc. Just like you do Cory, oh and happy bday!
Even though their solo music is different, they may go harder, be more personal and express themselves more freely, I wouldn't say they are completely different musicians. I mean BTS is in itself so diverse and really often not radio pop that you can find these versions of them also on group tracks. You could check out more rap line songs for example. Especially their cyphers go pretty hard against the haters. But I still love that they can do these solo projects and everyone is so supportive of that. I think it is really important for them as members of a group and an overarching project.
hi sorry i had to disagreed on some stuff. i am 2016 army, n learnt that this song is a sample from run the jewel exactly the time i watched this mv. bc armys explaining everything on comments n also in our army twt community. we armys share n teach each other alot esp in our own community. probably most armys that commenting abt this song without mention the source of the sample are new (no offense) so it just a matter of reading n learning. thats why i nvr finish watching reaction of this song right at earlier of video if the reactors didnt recognize the starting of the beat, ESP reactors that put "real hiphop fans" on title, obv a bs. but yea i totally understand u as RTJ fans if their song didnt get recognization as it shd. but u rly dont hv to worry bc we armys always, always recognize, acknowledge, learn n appreciate an artists if bts using sample/ inspiration from them bc bts does the same. they ALWAYS gv credit to artists of their inspiration. thanks for the reaction!
Happy Birthday, Cory! I thought it was common knowledge for ARMYs (except maybe for baby ARMYs) that majority of RM’s 1st mixtape was sampled (that’s why it was only available on Soundcloud). In fact, when you deep dive into rookie and pre-debut BTS, they created a lot of similar music (one of the many examples are Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools” which they used for “School of Tears”, or even “Graduation Song” based on “Young Wild and Free” by Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa & Bruno Mars). They were encouraged by BH’s CEO Bang PD to do this to develop their writing skills even more. All these are available in Soundcloud and are properly credited. In fact, one such song was “Born Singer” (from J. Cole’s “Born Sinner”), which they are actually releasing as a single in their upcoming album “Proof” (with complete producing credits to J. Cole and co.) Their Soundcloud is actually a treasure trove. They have a lot of wonderful covers, and most importantly, they have original music there as well which they wrote and produced (especially their most recent ones). “Ddaeng”, produced by Suga & written by the rapline, is actually an original which you guys might enjoy. There is a lot of Korean context and wordplay there, so if you’re reacting to that one, I suggest you watch the Korean explains Ddaeng video too.
As impressive as hard-hitting RM is on Joke and throughout his first mixtape, I think it's really important to view it within the context of who he was then and who he is now. He changed his name from Rap Monster to RM in 2017 because he felt it no longer represented him or his music. In a 2018 interview, Liam McEwan asked BTS what advice they'd give to their 2013 selves, and RM said, "Hey Namjoon, don't name yourself rap monster. You're a human, you're not a monster, okay? You're a beautiful human. I love you, bro." RM has been very vocal over the years about his struggle to overcome hate, feeling at war with himself, his journey to loving himself better, so don't get so focused on the Namjoon of the past that you miss out on who grows to be. Following this up with a song from his Mono mixtape is a shock to the system, but it's incredible to have this tangible evidence of his growth.

I think it is great that you pointed on Run The Jewels ‘Oh My Darling’ beat being used as a knowledge rap fan yourselves, this really helps in educating ARMY about this artist. This gives me the opportunity to reciprocate and educate you a little bit more about ARMY, huge BTS's international fandom. This is what the comment section is for, for ARMY to inform people just getting into BTS as yourselves, and yourselves informing ARMY, "Oh I recognize this beat, this riff, this melody, etc, it's from this artist and this album, released this year... go check it out" We are here to exchange information to each other, so we all gain something from watching these videos. I am a veteran ARMY (since 2013), in my 40s, a metal and Hip Hop fan since the 80s, born in Venezuela, living in Japan, English is my third language. I don't find it strange or disappointing that most ARMY who got recently into BTS do not recognize or write comments about the beat in a mixtape solo song released in 2015. I definitely do not expect MOST new ARMY (from 2017-2021, when BTS exploded overseas) to know or care about something like this. Because of the following facts about who ARMY is. The majority are not living in western countries (just think about the number of Asian ARMY flooding the internet with their English comments). Most of ARMY are not knowledgeable about the American rap scene and even less if these rappers are not mainstream huge. Probably, most ARMY are only casual listeners who likes the albums, the songs, the whole BTS concept, but they don't feel the need to read credits or even search for the very well-done lyrics translations of the whole BTS discography composed of how many albums? 16? I lost count. They just want to enjoy the music and go to the concerts and check UA-camrs to share their journey with them and learn from the comments. This is ARMY too, and I think it's great as it is. We veteran ARMY, are very much thankful to UA-camrs as yourselves and to the tsunami of baby ARMY because thanks to you all, we can have BTS for years to come, we had BTS doing concerts in the Middle East, South America, Europe! (before corona). "Thank you, you nice keep going". We, old ARMY knew, of course, we were there when this was released, and we know RM's first mixtape is a homage to all his favorite artists' when he explained on his lives how he used his fav beats as a base for his rap and lyrics, something he did a lot when he was a teenager practicing rapping and songwriting in his bedroom. RM along with Jankie (BTS rap trainer) took this activity to the BTS trainees and the guys released many covers like these (other artists beats, original lyrics).
Nice reaction👍 Every track on RM's debut mixtape has original beats from other artists. Definition of a mixtape: "A compilation of favorite pieces of music, typically by many different artists, recorded on to tape or another medium by an individual"
about the credits for the original owner of the beat, I think it is that the majority of ARMYs know it's not his beat because they always credit the original person in the information box of the videos when it comes to the use of samples so from the beggining we are aware easily if those are or not their own beats just checking the infromation box of the mv (they tell us also in the description in the souncloud audio) And also, if you check any other BTS or BigHitMusic groups you can have any kind of information from stylist, photographers, directors, dancers, producers and not just studios but also individually and I know this is not really common for the majority of companies but they have been doing this for a long time
Happy birthday. Thanks for having us in your shorts. For RM I would suggest Monster or Do You. His second mixtape, Mono, is chill and introspective and will show you why he's considered a lyrical genius. But I think you're onto something by starting with the first mixtape.
Every time I listen to RM's older stuff I'm in two minds, on one hand I really like this kind of angry and in-your-face kind of rapping but on the other I cannot not think about the reasons and all the suffering behind it. He has struggled for YEARS because all of the underground rap scene and all of his rapper friends rejected, mocked and insulted him and BTS. Not only he had to face the hate that he received from others but he also started to doubt himself, he was really conflicted, he reached the point where he himself didn't know who he was, if he was a rapper, an idol, an artist... For this reason I really appreciate songs like "Idol", reading the lyrics you can see how much he has grown and how he learned to love himself thanks to his journey with BTS: "You can call me artist You can call me idol Or you can call me anything else I don’t care I’m proud I’m free" If you want to listen to more RM songs I would recommend "Do you" from the same mixtape of "Joke", and "Uhgood" from Mono. "Uhgood" is probably my favorite song from his solo project, it's completely different from "Joke", it's slow and more melodic, the lyrics are intimate and very vulnerable. If you happen to listen to this song I highly recommend you to check out the lyrics from "doolsetbangtan", the person who translated it is korean and wrote some notes to better explain some things that would have been lost in the translation.
Appreciate your honesty and podcast style presentation. It is quite unique. I think BTS has reached the rare place where they can explore different styles. Too often an artist get typecast into one style, e.g. angry, soulful, soothing etc. Fans keep wanting the same thing, but RM and BTS can explore so many genres and different sides of their personalities. The fans get a richer experience as a result.
19:05 RM is the leader & main spokesperson for BTS, in addition to being the first member. I'd even go so far as to say that BTS, in its initial conception, was formed around him. Added to that, RM had a top-tier ESL score as a student & for many years was the only BTS member fluent in English, so he did most of the speaking in all of their English-language interviews. Just as each member of ARMY has their own bias, different countries & regions have their own favourite members. In English-speaking countries, if you'd heard of BTS at all before 2020, you're most likely to have heard RM. That said, he isn't a, "front man," in the way that Western bands are often structured - RM is well-known for having a horizontal style of leadership and he actively works at practicing humility. So, yeah, I think it's fair to say he's the, "face," of BTS.
Happy birthday Cory!! Thank you for this reaction, i always love your BTS reactions. Appreciate that you always took the time to do research before you do the reaction videos. I have never thought in my life specially at this age of 42 that i will ever enjoy listening and even cry to a rap song. Not until i fell deep in BTS rabbit hole. Their first song that made me cry was “Born Singer”, a sample of J.Cole “Born Sinner”. RM’s part in that song just breaks my heart..
Yeah u might have seen him in the front more , the reason is he is the leader and the only one fluent in English. Although everyone tries to take part in the interviews and stuff he still leads them in US coz of the language. Otherwise all of them are equally visible and admirable. And yes thanks to ur research we learn new information 💜
I have to say that I have watched this video several times and your analysis or reaction this video made me really LOVE it even more! He is considered the leader of BTS, so I think what you said about him being the “front guy” is an accurate description…..but I think that when they are on stage they share it AMAZINGLY WELL! No egos! Can’t wait for you to see SUGAs persona as AugstD or more of it! I think he has 2 mixtapes take a look at the first! Thanks for the reaction! (Oh yeah loved the jelly bean part) Happy belated birthday!
the official mv released by bighit has in the credits that it is beat from Run The Jewels. So I don't know if it is not being said, because it might be just common knowledge or people indeed don't know. RM insperation was NAS actually, but he did also listen to Eminem, Tupac, Etc. RM actualy means Real Me, He used to go by Rapmonster early BTS days, but he changed it as he outgrown it and says that he isn't a monster he is human. The reason why RM is spoken about a lot is because he is the only one fluent in English, so he has to do the most when there doing anything in the western music industry. (nothing wrong with that you see him the most though) Love your reactions!!
Doesn’t mean Real Me, was a statement he made when pushed by an interviewer for a meaning, there is a letter he wrote to fans on Weverse about the name change, and it’s just RM!
Happy Birthday 💜 Please be understanding that this is from RM's first mixtape, our fandom is big and still expanding... Is hard to keep up with everything BTS has put out. We also are really diverse in nationalities and a lot of us didn't have the opportunity to know a lot about hip-hop and the great hip-hop artists. I'm educating myself now because after hearing so much BTS (and loving it) I figured that I should learn and appreciate the culture itself and its history too. I think that most ARMYs suggested this song to show a little bit of RM's aggressive style and skills. He changed a lot, Joke is far from being one of my favorites, but the context behind the mixtape and RM's early persona is more than enough to make it really fascinating. I wish I could comment something better but trying to make sense in english is kind of tiring.
funny thing about this song he ended it with "hit me" as an open invitation to those who kept critisizing him to respond to him with a song or anything really but it was complete silence afterwards hhh. this man already had a loyal fanbase when he was in the underground scene at 14 , grown men were scared to go against him in rap battles cuz they knew they would lose.
I was going to agree with you Nina but seeing Diana's comment reminded me that pandemic armys alone are now more numerous than the size we were prepandemic. Joon's first mixtape was released so long ago and is solo work so it's a very deep dive now. Details may not be common knowledge anymore.
Your honesty is very refreshing. Thank you. And...happy birthday Cory. BTS is my first introduction to rap, because I have such respect for them as a group I have ventured to listen to some of their rap. Not my thing but I admire and respect their message (s). I just appreciate that they speak to their haters through their music...and their climb to the top. Take that haters.
Yes, RM's first mixtape is all music by a different artist but with his own lyrics. I think that most Armys are not really fans of rap, so most will not be aware of that. But if you look at official credits, the original artist is always credited. BTS did a lot of covers with their own lyrics when they first started out. These covers/samples are always released for free on Soundcloud, so BTS do not make money off it. RM is BTS's main lyricist. The CEO of Bighit, their record label, signed RM right away because of his talented rapping skills. His first mixtape was all about showing off is rapping skills and lyricism. I think rapping in Korean and being able to switch to English effortlessly and rhyming English words with Korean words and his lyrics still makes sense with his wordplay is what makes RM really special as a musician. You don't really have to be a rap fan to appreciate that type of talent. Anyways, it's good you mentioned that the beat wasn't RM's. I think some fans will be upset that you said 'disappointing' but I think most will understand that you were 'surprised' people didn't mention it wasn't an original beat. You can't please everyone on the internet and some fans are not native English speakers so sometimes words being used can be taken as offensive when it really isn't. You don't need to censor your opinions but also some commenters might not understand due to language barriers.
You might not see this comment since it’s been a few days, but I just wanted to give some context behind RM’s first mixtape which Joke is on. His first mixtape was created in his early early career in music. During that time, he was still pretty young and most of his rap was aggressive. His first mixtape does come with a very aggressive sound because of the kinda place he was in mentally. He has shared before that back then he felt like he had something to prove due to the hate and backlash he experienced from the people he use to consider his friends in the underground rap scene. Not only that, he was also battling depression and suicidal thoughts from it. So you can definitely feel the difference between his art then and now. It’s interesting to see the comparison between his old mixtape “RM” and the growth in his most recent one named “Mono.” Mono is softer, more melodic, and his rap style has a more relaxed sound to it. As you can tell, he is a pretty introspective person and it shows even more in Mono. Honestly I would recommend checking out both works. RM is literally a genius and Mono is a therapeutic masterpiece. It goes to show how he’s let go of the anger he harbored in “RM” and has just accepted himself for who he is.
Rm is a lyrical genius, he is credited with almost 200 songs. He wrote V's singularity, Jimin's serendipity, and so much more. Rm also has collaborations with Walle, Warren g, and some many more. Rm also has duets with every member. When I say genius, he has 148 IQ and tested in the top 1.3% in the country. He said himself that he reads about 50 or so books a year, more if they aren't on tour. He also loves art, in Korea the now have classified museums by one's rm has visited and ones he hasn't. The ones he visits have seen spikes in visitors by like 30% or more. This man is beyond talented but, he is so humble.
I think people’s experience differs when encountering this song. I am not familiar with Run the Jewels but I was very much aware that RM did not make this beat. Run the Jewels is credited by BANGTANTV, the YT channel where Joke MV is posted. Same credit also appears on the lyric MV I watched.
It’s quite common, especially in a mixtape. I am so looking forward to diving into RMs entire mixtape now if this is the type of work he’s putting out!
@@BeardsBoozeBandsBS His second mixtape is totally diff from his first. Be ready for a total whiplash. The first ‘RM’ is on SoundCloud and second ‘Mono’ is on Spotify💜 Have fun..
@@BeardsBoozeBandsBS his solo works are amazing. They shows his range as a musician. The difference in style between his first and second mixtapes def highlights that ☺️🥰
I was having a shitty day, got home, saw you were reacting to joke, and so far I'm just to the part you stopped the bean boozle challenge and I lol'd for real so thank you for brightening my day. 💜
ah, some people might overreact a bit to what you said about armys not mentioning the og RTJ sample but i do agree that typically not as many armys would know this these days. back when i joined it was a commonly known fact, but 2015 was so long ago now and many newer fans may not know! it's not a bad thing to say. always good to know stuff and say that people need to give credit where credit is due. :) but cory, many of us are aware of this fact, since all of rm's 1st mixtape uses other beats! and very happy birthday! 🎂🎉
I knew it was Run the Jewels and RM talked about using it when he talked about this mixtape back in the day. I feel like most OG Army knows this. Sorry you didn't see that when you were doing your research. But a lot of us are aware.
Happy birthday Cory.. Just an FYI, yes it was not mentioned by ARMY but it was fully credited under the official MV, if you expand the description you can find that the music was credited to Run The Jewels 'Oh My Darling' I agree that it should've been mentioned by ARMY in their posts but they probably didn't think they need to since it's already credited and most of their explanation posts are lyrics focused.. regardless of that I really enjoyed your reaction and I always appreciate your genuine opinions in all your reaction videos!!
RM started as an underground rapper and it's common knowledge that several of those rappers came down hard on RM for joining a kpop band saying he wasn't a 'true' rapper by doing so. This song in my opinion definitely showed those doubters that RM is not only a truly awesome and amazingly fast rapper but that he has the ability to be adaptable to both sides of his life, BTS and his solo career.
Another great reaction, guys. Thank you! And Happy Birthday, Cory 🥃. What's even more impressive is that RM's first mixtape is so different from his second mixtape, Mono - literally night and day. The maturity of his sound and lyricism in Mono is great. I would also recommend looking up the lyrics on Doolset, this translation was good but definitely some awkward translations in there, still.
Their first mixtapes are mostly on soundcloud, and RM made a ton of songs there on famous original beats. Because it's a quite known fact maybe nobody felt like mentioning it, but I get your point.
This is one of the reasons I like reaction videos because different people have different information and experiences, and their impute will impact and inform my consumption of the song and band. Thank you so much for telling us about the sample! I'm sorry you couldn't find an Army acknowledgement beforehand but I'm glad you let people know :)
Thank you for your reaction to this song, you are amazing. But I can certainly tell you that the live versions of the songs performed by the three rappers are a million times better. Ex. Happy Birthday Cory!!!! I was cracking up while I was watching you guys play bamboozled Ik it's disgusting! And also yall facial expression when RM started rapping was priceless! 🤣🤭💜
I've seen a TON of ARMY comment that this is the beat from Run the Jewel on other reactors channels... RM originally stood for "Rap Monster", but he changed it to "Real Me". He is the Leader of BTS so it makes sense you he would stand out to you when you watch interviews etc. He is also the only member that speaks fluent English so he often acts as a translator for the others.
nah we know the beats are sampled it’s just a known fact, maybe not exactly a sample of who or what but like we are aware, actually it’s the reason his first mixtape isn’t on spotify / apple music etc
RM is the leader of BTS. Also, RM started out as Rap Monster, changed it to just the initials RM, then changed the meaning of RM to Real Me. Also, remember that RM “Ranch Runda” was an underground rapper before he joined Big Hit now HYBE. There is a recommendation I have for you both. It’s the Rap Line RM, Suga, and J-Hope mainly but Vocal line also. It will give their influence in the rap world. HIP HOP PHILE (Lover).
Again, read the letter he wrote to fans on Weverse, it’s not Real Me, it’s just RM. He said it COULD stand for something like Real Me, not that it did!
@@larewi6765 “During one interview with Entertainment Tonight Online, RM explained that this new stage name “could symbolize many things” and that's why he liked it. At the time, he explained that it stood for “real me.” Since then, fans learned to adopt this new meaning to the stage name, using “RM” when referring to the artist.” Also, “On November 13 2017, Namjoon wrote a message on the group’s official fan cafe announcing he changed his stage name from Rap Monster to RM. Namjoon stated that “RM” stands for “Real Me”. I Googled it. It’s sited numerously.
Congratulations! And thank you for giving us another great reaction ☺ I really appreciate the research you do into every song. Seeing this makes me think that you'd enjoy Hip Hop Lover by BTS. It's basically them paying tribute to all the musicians that have influenced them and made them love music. Have a great birthday!
Happy birthday Cory!!! I recommend you check out BTS outro: tear and "UGH" next (those are rap songs by all the rappers of the group). Make sure to dig into the meaning, it's brilliant! Thank you!!
BTS are multi-faceted, multi-talented group... Their range as individual artists and as a group is insane! If you like these kinda genre then you can watch the Rapline's Cyphers (there are 4 parts), more AgustD nd more RM( old). Love your reactions 💜
this song came out at the time where RM couldn't breathe properly or had a hard time containing his breath because of his deviated septum. about 3 years later he had surgery to correct it, but even with that complication he was able to rap like this. if someone knows more about this, pls correct me.
Your pain was funny. :) Happy Birthday Cory! I really appreciate that you do your research because I'm similar. Also I love Joke. The range of RM and Suga/Agust D is amazing. Also their solo projects allow them to be so much more raw. Loving watching you guys get to know them.
Even though RM originally meant Rap Monster he decided as he went through different stages and writing that he is now the REAL ME. This was a real hard decision for Namjoon he struggled with being mocked by underground rappers as they asked if he was a kpop idol or rapper. He finally came to believe and accept he is an idol who raps... the real me.
It was surprising for me to know about the beat too. I just realized when reading the description in the official video where they only credit the owners of ‘Oh My darling’. But you are right, they should be credited more.
RM is the face of BTS in 3nglish speaking countries because he is the one most fluent in English. In Korea, he's not so much. I have always appreciated his wordplay and the fact that he switches effortlessly and insanely quickly between Korean & English. My brain always melts a little when he does that. I think the main reason why I love the three rappers of the group is because all three have very distinctive, separate styles and don't sound cookie cutter. If you ever want to watch the three of them go off, watch their live performance of Tear at Wembley Stadium. It is definitely a must watch, not just for their rapping, but their overall performance.
@@BeardsBoozeBandsBS I agree with Amber, BTS live performances are almost always better than their MVs. Here's the link to the performance with English Subtitles. ua-cam.com/video/a_3KCRAYAFQ/v-deo.html
I really think in a way his first mixtape is ahead of its time ;A; though it's very fitting to his self image, what he's been through, and the time/year it was relevant. You'd be surprised at how different his second mixtape is. But still very fitting to who RM is. I personally think there's no "main face" in BTS but I do see your point. Maybe because RM is what he had described is the past, "spokesperson" of the group. A lot of people gave different member that "face of the group" title lol so, maybe he's your bias? Excited for you to discover A LOT more from them as group and individuals 💜
RM and Suga received harsh criticism from the underground hip-hop scene not just because they "switched" genres, but particularly because idol groups are perceived as mindless singers/rappers, whose jobs are only to perform and look pretty, without any creative input in the songs themselves, which is the opposite of "real rappers", who are supposed to write their own lyrics. But of course, their perception of RM and Suga is far from the truth because they do write their own lyrics and, in fact, Big Hit's CEO Bang Si-hyuk insisted that the rappers wrote their own verses, which is why RM, Suga, and J-hope have writing credits in so many BTS songs. So RM and Suga sat on the boundary of rappers and idols. On the one hand, they were criticized as sell-outs and no longer real rappers because they joined BTS. On the other hand, they were criticized for not being pretty enough to be idols. Suga mentions this in his verse in "Born Singer" (remake of J Cole's "Born Sinner"); I LOVE this song, btw. RM also talks about his identity as an artist in "Do You" (uses the beat from "Aerosol Can" by Major Lazer).
When I think about RM and Suga getting hate for joining an idol group and then murdering haters in tracks like Joke or Agust D I think about the line from Rap God by Eminem where he is mocking his own haters saying, " 'it's not hip hop its pop' cuz I found a hella way to fuse it". It's basically the same deal, assholes who can't make it taking shots at the people who did by trying to be gatekeepers of music.
I like that You Voice your critic and don’t shy away from it - cause Army can get „intense „ 🙈 And it’s a very valid point you pointed out. Thanks for talking about that cause I personally don’t check this kind of stuff. Shows your love for music and that you know what you are talking about. The only thing I can say is that RM and all the guys from BTS always give credit we’re it’s due and that they would not ever sweep something like this under the rug or whatever😊 Reading the comments here I’m glad to see that RM talked about it so openly and gave them credit- like i knew he did.
Looks like everything was already covered so nothing for me to add but to say Happy Birthday Cory! I hope you enjoyed your day! I love your reactions and know I can count on you guys to give a true and honest take on what you're hearing. AND I always learn something new from you so I Love it. Don't change. BORAHAE!!!💜💜

Yes I also had this quote pinned when review Joke….
thanks for sharing! I did not know that!!
Thank you so much for sharing this 🙏💜
Yes I was just about to type this in my reply then caught your reply. Thank you
RM did 9 different flows here.
Great post Army 👏🏽👏🏽💜🙏

- Cypher 1- 4 "rap line " ( response to their haters)
- ddeang "rap line" ( a word play that blows your mind tells about their success)
- tear "rap line" ( a meaningful raps that talks about the "almost" disbanding of their group)
RM -Monster
SUGA/AGUST D - 'Agust d' and
- 'the last'( talks about his anxiety and depression)
J-HOPE - Airplane and 1verse

Borahae 💜💜

A must to read:
"Q: There are a few songs that focused on rap techniques.
I thought it was common knowledge around ARMY that this beat was sampled - I know RM gave credits for the song and that’s why this song was never included on streaming sites etc just on Soundcloud :)
Some armys don't pay attention they never do.

This is what the comment section is for, for ARMY to inform people just getting into BTS as yourselves, and yourselves informing ARMY, "Oh I recognize this beat, this riff, this melody, etc, it's from this artist and this album, released this year... go check it out"
We are here to exchange information to each other, so we all gain something from watching these videos.
I love the way RM plays with the words. His mixtapes are completely different, both imo masterpieces!
Oh! Happy birthday!! 💜💜💜
Nice reaction👍 Every track on RM's debut mixtape has original beats from other artists. Definition of a mixtape: "A compilation of favorite pieces of music, typically by many different artists, recorded on to tape or another medium by an individual"
about the credits for the original owner of the beat, I think it is that the majority of ARMYs know it's not his beat because they always credit the original person in the information box of the videos when it comes to the use of samples so from the beggining we are aware easily if those are or not their own beats just checking the infromation box of the mv (they tell us also in the description in the souncloud audio)
And also, if you check any other BTS or BigHitMusic groups you can have any kind of information from stylist, photographers, directors, dancers, producers and not just studios but also individually and I know this is not really common for the majority of companies but they have been doing this for a long time
Happy birthday.
For this reason I really appreciate songs like "Idol", reading the lyrics you can see how much he has grown and how he learned to love himself thanks to his journey with BTS:
"You can call me artist
You can call me idol
Or you can call me anything else
I don’t care
I’m proud
I’m free"
If you want to listen to more RM songs I would recommend "Do you" from the same mixtape of "Joke", and "Uhgood" from Mono.
The neverending research i had to do about this song back then. Just genius.
I love you guys because you do your research and you know your music. THANK YOU!
Army knows that the rappers use samples on their mixtapes. RM gave credit to the beat. But I'm glad you got that out there.
Rm saved the rap in kpop 🔥
the official mv released by bighit has in the credits that it is beat from Run The Jewels.
(nothing wrong with that you see him the most though)
Love your reactions!!
Doesn’t mean Real Me, was a statement he made when pushed by an interviewer for a meaning, there is a letter he wrote to fans on Weverse about the name change, and it’s just RM!
@@larewi6765 exactly! Was about to say this, thank you.
@@Bolachas25 Does my head in every time I hear it!
Happy Birthday 💜
Please be understanding that this is from RM's first mixtape, our fandom is big and still expanding...
I wish I could comment something better but trying to make sense in english is kind of tiring.
funny thing about this song he ended it with "hit me" as an open invitation to those who kept critisizing him to respond to him with a song or anything really but it was complete silence afterwards hhh.
this man already had a loyal fanbase when he was in the underground scene at 14 , grown men were scared to go against him in rap battles cuz they knew they would lose.
mostly everybody knows that rm’s first mixtape is from other beats that he just rewrote and rapped lyrics over.
I wouldn’t say “mostly everybody knows.” I’ve been army for a couple of years and I didn’t know that and I’ve gone pretty deep.
@@Beserious795 thats why i said mostly, not entirely everybody
@@Beserious795 It's still mostly. mono is on Spotify while RM isn't it's quite common knowledge
I was going to agree with you Nina but seeing Diana's comment reminded me that pandemic armys alone are now more numerous than the size we were prepandemic. Joon's first mixtape was released so long ago and is solo work so it's a very deep dive now. Details may not be common knowledge anymore.
@@daniabelko1382 it is common knowledge now, i can confirm since i became army march 2021.
"RM comes across almost like, the leader? Maybe? I could be way off base, but that's how it feels to me." 🤣🤣🤣
This is very late but Happy Birthday Cory!! 🎂
RM is the spokesperson for the group and the leader so its natural that he stands out, its his role!
Just checked the MV and it gives credit for the beat to Run The Jewell’s and the song Oh My Darling. Happy birthday Cory 🎉🥳
I absolutely love learning more about BTS. Thank you for your honesty, research, and love of music. Truly very enjoyable.
RM's lyrics have poetic moments that remind me of Mohammad Ali's (the boxer).
thank you, i knew the beat wasnt his but i didnt know that it was from a diff song. ill check it out
It’s quite common, especially in a mixtape.

HBD Cory🥳 You have much fun today. Thank you for support our boys.
It’s great to see people recognize RM’s genius in everything he touches. I love how RM is king of clumsy too. 💜
P.S. RM and SUGA both have great diss tracks, but they also have deeply introspective, philosophical, and poetic raps, too.
Ex. Happy Birthday Cory! Thank you for awesome review to both of you
Happy Birthday Cory!!!!
It's Runch Randa, I think autocorrect changes it for many people 😂
@@MarinaEariel Thanks I didn’t catch the error. I hate autocorrect.
@@OnnaL I hate it too. Specially because English is my second language so I get fake corrections in both English and Spanish
Always a delight watching your reactios, thank you for the amazing content as usual!
This song is amazing and this was a genuine reaction. Thank you for that! BTW HAPPY BIRTHDAY Cory. Wish you all the best!
it's so satisfying to see people getting genuinely shock by their diversity 😌
this song came out at the time where RM couldn't breathe properly or had a hard time containing his breath because of his deviated septum. about 3 years later he had surgery to correct it, but even with that complication he was able to rap like this.
if someone knows more about this, pls correct me.
HBD to you..🥳🥳🎉🍾
Thank you to educate us.. We learn something new everyday 🙏💜
It is definitely a must watch, not just for their rapping, but their overall performance.
i recommend listening to Hip Hop Phile by BTS bc they rap about their inspirations of hip hop
Love it. We definitely will.

I really enjoy your reactions. Love from Puerto Rico 💜
He crushed that beat flowing between two languages with command, speed and clever lyrics. Put a sir after his name.
Happy Birthday! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. 🥰
Happy Birthday ~ I've played beanboozle with friends before and those tastes get so stuck in your mouth lol

You guys always make me laugh. And the reaction 1000/10. Love you.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CORY! Thanks for doing this reaction. I hope you checkout RM's "Do You" mv at some point. Take care guys!
Best opening to a reaction ever! 🤣
