So many negative comments for such a beautiful truck. These people cannot appreciate how advanced the technology in that truck was for that year (1964). Self-cancelling indicators, "autocruise", you could even mount a heater and radio in that truck. However, it didn't come factory fitted with heater and radio. No power steering but the steering can be turned by even a little child once the truck was in motion, that's how light it becomes when moving. You take off in second gear (pull the lever towards you and press down). First gear (pull lever towards you and lift up) is low range and the truck just crawls with very high torque. It is reserved for steep hill work with heavy loads, getting out of mud, etc. Inside is very spacious with the gear lever on the steering column. Very simple and smart-looking instrument and speedo layout. You don't "wiggle" the wiper button to switch the wiper off - you push it towards the speedometer to switch off! A very easy truck to drive and was very well suited for farm work and was also popular with builders in SA. Very pleasant appearance like all Toyota models as well.

60 years from 1964 would be 2024 so I guess 6 years ago it would be 54 years old. Great video, this guy is a real natural!

Pretty impressive camera work while driving that handful of a truck.

The turn indicators in the "tunnels" on the mudguards are an unusual styling feature.

That is so cool! I’ve never seen a Toyota that old in Canada, they all rusted away here already.

Same in central Europe - the oldest I remember are early-80s HiAces, LiteAces, Corollas etc. The only pre-1980 Toyota I've ever seen here was a pristine Cressida a few years ago. Two of my uncles had 1983 LWB HiAces, very nice barges! Both were sold in the early 2000s though. One was replaced by a new HiAce, the other with a Renault Kangoo that didn't last anywhere near as long as the Toyota.

99% sure Canada never got these. It wasn’t until 68-70 when the hilux was introduced
Stout was US only I think in lhd

You were thinking of the DKW “upside down” column shift pattern.

Our family had a 1957 Dodge with exactly that kind of speedometer. I remember being fascinated by it as a 9 year old.

This thing is beautiful. What an awesome project. There is a heavily modified project version of one of these stouts for sale near me for 8600 right now. If I were still single, I'd buy it in a heartbeat as a project to bring it back down to stock height or lower and clean it up.
I don't think I can fit in it at my height... But damn they're so cool looking... And being a huge Toyota fan anyway, this is just too cool.
Thanks for the video of such a rare bird!

My dad bought 1964 Datsun. It was smaller with a 1200 cc motor and 4 speed on the column like this one. It was rated at 60 HP and one ton load. It did carry one ton of grapes on at least one occasion.

Great video. Can you provide a little more info on the carb swap? My '66 Toyota Crown has the same engine. What is the the carb manuf/model, and what did you need to use as far as an adapter? Any other issues (linkage, choke, etc)? I know this is a lot to ask for..........! By the way, I don't think it's that ugly. It will look a lot better with the grille and headlight bezels and bumper back on!

This was the start of the real mini truck here in the States . The Americans did not like them . They was cheap and got fairly good MPG . These trucks was used in urban areas as delivery trucks for retail stores . Back them Even Toyota really made a good work truck that the average worker can afford . The USA made real trucks sense the 20's all the way up in to about 1972 . After that these US trucks started to be not work trucks but a luxury transportation . . I own a 2011 Ford F150 XL and it has 4 speakers AM FM radio , Power windows , ps , pb , pl , pm . it will tell me my MPG how many miles I have in my gas tank , Hell it even has a center arm rest that is so big that I can use it as a desk . This is just an XL . The things I did to it when I got it . New rear diff with 4:11 posi trac . See what the deal with the thumping noise from under the truck . ( It ended up being the transmission tail shaft and was told that all of these Ford 6 speed transmission do that . This was done by a transmission shop . It's been that way ever sense I own the Truck about 4 years now . It also has the 5.0 engine . The trucks today you cant get a plan jane tuck that has a manual trans , a inline 6 and manual everything else . Like a 1960 Chevy truck that had a good speed about 50 mph . The new trucks are junk I think .

A load of difference from my dads 2018 Tacoma. So long as you have the key fob on you, you can just pull the door handle to get in as if it's unlocked. ( I seem to have caught that feature off guard the other day and had to try twice LOL) Once in, hold in brake and push button start. The backup camera is great to have. My only peeves are backlights go off in the dials when headlights or park lights are off. Camera screen is too dim when they are on in the daytime. Headlights must be on during rain or snow in West Virginia. And, a note to self. Wait until the engine has started before taking out of park or you will cancel startup LOL.
