I like to think Cochrane almost immediately understood the significance of the Enterprise when he saw her through the telescope. It could have been anything...except he saw his own warp theory and design in the ship, even though it was 300 years ahead. Federation ships still have the classic human warp assembly and hull arrangement he pioneered right from the beginning. Of course, that ending though. I guess he wanted it much sooner in this timeline, heh.

One of the best star trek movies, and the greatest scenes are just the dialogue. The lore and implications of these scenes really bring the weight of the state of humanity, which is intrinsically tied to the them of the show, is just so well executed. And well acted. It takes a certain grace to act in a way that serves the script, but doesn't seek the spotlight from the theme which is more important than any one actor or ego.
I have this theory that the Enterprise going back in time and showing him what potential the future had was what made him act benevolent to the Vulcans. The very presence in history is what caused the divergence point between our universe and the mirror universe.
That is a good point. Frankly, given how humanity is portrayed in that setting, it makes more sense for them to attack the Vulcans, even more so after getting attacked by the Borg.
