Peter Mel is widely known as one of the best big wave surfers on the planet. His performances at Mavericks, including winning the 2012/2013 Mavericks Invitational, are the stuff of surfing legend.
What you may not know is that Peter comes from a strong lineage of Santa Cruz surfers and is proudly keeping the surf gene in the bloodline with his own son.
Peter's father, John has lived in Santa Cruz, California since 1969. He started Freeline Surf Shop not long after to showcase the boards he shaped and he raised Peter between racks of surfboard blanks and wetsuits. After a successful competitive and free surfing career, Peter has stepped back from the limelight to help coach his son, also named John, who is entering the professional scene in a big way.
Check out the Mel men's approach to family, fatherhood, and wave riding in this moving episode about one surf clan's passion for the sea.

I remember when John senior was taking Peter down to contests in SoCal. Peter was around John Jr's age. John senior had a brother David. Thrusters were just invented and David was the first to shape and sell them in Santa Cruz at Freeline. I bought one and got a lot of ribbing in the water over it. A year later and everyone was riding one. John senior is probably the nicest person you'll ever meet in the surfing world.

I’ve followed surfing for about the last 23-24 years and love to surf. I’ve seen plenty of footage of Peter, but didn’t know about his father and son. Cool!

Love to the entire Mel family... I was inspired watching John surfing the Hook; then Peter excelling everywhere from big airs at Sewers, to huge Mavs, to Waimea; and now John jr. who is already a very exciting surfer in his early teens. Stay on it, and stay healthy y'all!

Freeline Design was such a great shop - John made me my first kneeboard - a Steve Lis fish.

John Mel has his grandmother's freckles. I worked with her 20 years ago, may she rest in peace. Kim would be proud to see how far he has come.

Early 70's SF Ocean Beach kneeboarder tube hounds were getting their boards made by John Mel Freeline Designs.. beautiful refined progressive flawless gem boards, guns and funshapes. These guys weren't kooks; they could make it out and snag late drops, tons of body english and style. SF was a hot bed of innovation, and Mel's boards were a big factor.

So if I ever have kids some day, I will also be taking them to the sea as soon as possible! For now, with so much inspiration from all the pros and even the groms out there, it's time I learnt,,, Wish where I live in the UK was better for surfing,,,

So many good places in the UK. Great memories of Newquay and just northeast of Little Haven in Wales.

background music / noise when people talk is very annoying .... it sends a message that the person talking is so boring - we need to spice things up with random noise .
