Jjhoop C I really hurt my arm after paddling to get over a wave when I new I was not going to make it then I got dunked and the strap that you put on your arm took me with it and really hurt my arm
HI_5 Riding the friction less water feels great; i've jet skied before and it is very much different from riding anything on the ground. Cant imagine for surfing.
This video gives me chills and reminds me of the days I used to ride big (double overhead to me) waves. Much respect for these guys. They are riding way bigger waves then I have ever and it just takes a certain kind of person to do that. To me this is the most extreme sport ever. Hats off!
Sheesh! Some rough comments. I thought your clip is awesome. That intro really captures that mixed feeling of panic and split second preparation when you get caught on the inside. Yeah I get that the fisheye makes the waves look small but we know they're not. The board cam shots of going over the falls and getting caught in the barrel are wicked - surely that gives the viewer an idea of the extremity involved. Danilo's bail at 5:09 - Shane's takeoff at 8:17 - awesome stuff. And the behind the scenes gear getting the footage broadcasted asap - loved it. Maybe this is one more for surfers and photogs. Well done guys!
WOW! as a surfer and knowing the feeling of getting caught inside with small to medium waves (4 to 10 foot), that first segment was freakin terrifying!! Could'nt begin to think about being in that position of having a high heart rate and paddling as hard as you can and watching the ocean stand up in a wall of 25 foot or bigger.....
That moment when they are like "time to ditch the board" is so intense. BIG props to all the riders in this video -- risking your lives to get inside the biggest waves. Well done with this GoPro. Palms are sweating.
I recalled when surfing was a personal sport, a spiritual connection with the ocean. Now all this marketing capitalizing, using technology sprawl is just a shame. Results nowadays are; crowed beaches, pollution, no respect for the planet, etc. etc. I am not against tech. but I loath when is abused.
Surfmus Just can't escape progress I guess. One area though that I very much hate is the noisy, polluting jet-skis. Seems like they are everywhere in surfing these days. They provide safety for large wave riders but I see them at all contests these days.
To all you guys saying the camera makes the waves look tiny, get lost. If you had any idea how big these actually were you would not be complaining. This guys are risking their lives and you are just sitting there criticising.
they aren't only big they also make u go hella fast when u drop in I surf lil waves and even tho they are like 5 ft they still give me a huge push. Compare that to a 20ft waves those guys are going like over 15 mph also its cold AF there that's why they are wearing wetsuits (to keep them warm)
Nessim Debbaj well you can go skydiving any where in the world but you can only go surfing where there is water. The center of north america isn't the best place to go surfing
Sleeping Lion eh that’s debatable,,, you may be at the mercy of he ocean for surfing but where’s as skydiving your at the mercy of gravity and if you mess up once in the air you could possibly die
Sleeping Lion Not saying that surfing isn’t crazy dangerous but I’m just saying skydiving can also be hella dangerous And p:s I’m a surfer and it’s extremely fun to the point where it’s unexplainable
I'm not a surfboader, but I do a bit of surfing in my white water kayaks. I had the privilege to see this action first hand in 2004,5? Can't remember exactly the date. But, to stand on the beach and feel the sand rumble under my feet. As those big 40+ footers exploded. And see those guys dropping in on those big faces. Crazy respect dudes. Amazing athletes.
why not point the camera in the other direction so that we can see what the person is seeing (instead of just the person flailing about as they paddle?) . :)
yourfavoritekid youd rather just see water droplets from the front of the board skimming through the water? Idk anout you but id rather see SOMETHING than NOTHING 🤙🏽
yourfavoritekid yeah ive seen some videos that were fine but if you look up willy pov, most of his videos are just straight water while hes riding the wave.
Sorry Sunny that is not the K38 break. K38 breaks at the point into the cove on the other side of the hotel just south of that. I stayed in an abandoned house on the cliff in the middle of the other side of the cove the hotel was built on it breaks into before the hotel was built. There was a flat dirt field for camping before it was built too. I lived there for a summer when Iwas 17 too at the edge overlooking it. like 33 years ago. Good Times beer was a quarter in the bars food was good and cheap and I caught lots of lobster in that cove. PARADISE FOR ME THEN. Saw you shoot the HB pier twice on the same wave at an OP Pro many years ago at the contest. Way good I could never forget it.
Samuel Acosta Did you try heating your mount with a Lighter before you stuck it on? or you might of pulled it off the wrong way. Or maybe you were just unlucky man..
So I just spend a good chunk on a Hero 7, and was a little sketched out about mounting it on the board. I watched this and was like...Yea, no worries. LOL.
Too bad GoPros do such a horrible job filming waves. That fisheye makes everything look head high. That's why there's so little GoPro footage in this piece. Can someone please come out with an action camera without a ridiculous fisheye lens???
+Dead poolmonkey agreed about the small size, just get rid of the fisheye lens so it doesn't flatten the wave so much. That's a huge wave and it looks relatively small. Such a silly issue since gopros were literally invented to film waves. There's so many clones now, it's only a matter of time before one comes out without a wide angle lens so we can get some decent surf footage from water level.
every surfer knows that when that lip is coming down like that, you ditch, dive and paddle to the outside! you gotta respect the ocean otherwise you will get crushed
The best example of the weakness of that kind of shot angles. 1st person cam do not give justice to the performance nor the heaviness. IMO, the best movies are My Eyes won't Dry, that succeed to embark us into the fury with the performer.
It's impressive surfing however I think the GoPro infatuation does not do justice to the size of the waves and the hellacious conditions in the water. The GoPro does get us nice and close but the waves are so much larger than GoPro realizes in its angles. I'd be real happy with old-school boat shots and super telephoto lenses instead. Even drones with GoPros don't really help. When will this be realized by the watermen? They are doing something incredible and it is hardly being captured.

It was once called “the sport of royalty” for a damn good reason. It’s certainly something that you can not convey to someone else. You’ve got to experience it to really appreciate it for what it is.
I have never been to Mavs, but from all the footage/video I see it looks like everyone is just riding the shoulder? Wave breaks behind them they then turn of the bottom slightly and go over the back of the shoulder, nothing epic, actually boring to watch...
That first wave where Jamie got sucked back over, there was a guy at 0:38 who was probably 20 yards further inside that must’ve gotten worked over badly .... 😢
I was watching this video and out of no where did one of the surfers say @##$@## God..I wish people didn't blaspheme God the way that they do. this was so cool. I like the part when they were hustling to get dorian's footage to the tent....not common seeing what goes on behind the scenes during GoPro's filming/broadcasting

Unbelievable. The stamina these guys must have to fight waves like these...
The waves will always win in the end
Amazing opening. Looks so tiring and dangerous getting past those gigantic waves. Great vid. Really shows the awesome power of the ocean.
And the agility of those surfers too! Amazing.

Hold downs and destruction vary depending on location. A double overhead at your spot may very well be worse than Mavericks hold down wise

surely I'm not the only one that thought the waves were small from their P.O.V
TOTALLY CORRECT..BOGUS CAMERA ANGLE...POOR VIDEO..WEAK
Gopros and most POV views always make waves look smaller
Yeah it’s because of the type of lens that gopros use
Some of the footage they get when they jump off their boards to go under is lit
That's an insane intro, crazy footage, I don't understand how these guys do it
