That is an interesting take! I didn't consider Lane to be an extrovert until I was actually talking about her. It's funny what thoughts come out in a conversation. To your point, I think Lorelai said something at Lane's wedding about how Lane noticed Rory because of her band T-shirt, so your theory that Lane adopted Rory at first has evidentiary support.
Thank you! :) I'm glad it turned out that way, we didn't really plan ahead of this video, which I guess worked out for the better. We got to share our unfiltered thoughts with each other.
13:07 This is such a great take! I hadn't noticed but it's true, that's why Lorelai and Rori's support is so cute, because they never belittle Mrs. Kim in the process ❤
This was a great listen. My first instinct was to say Rory was a bad friend to Lane, but I was glad there were actually a lot of instances to pull from where Rory was being a supportive friend!
Thank you! I think that my friend and I also started off feeling that way but once we started looking closely at scenes, we found that our opinion changed.
Of course, since its a TV show, it will mostly show us the conflicts and drama, but in the end, I would say it did a good job of showing us, how their friendship would have been, if we wouldn't have focused on the drama. They seem very wholesome together, they know each other in and out and would go through fire for them, we see that actually quite sometime in the show like you said they were ready to punch the guys for mistreating their best friend, letting them stay at their places etc. Their friendship is pretty realistic in a way, that they needed to put work into staying friends after Rory switched schools. Of course life can get in a way of so many great friendships and friend break-ups are part of life. In the end its the love, effort and dedication to our friends that will make us make time for them, if its only one-sided, then it won't work, both parties need to work on the friendship. Also, a lot of credits go to Lorelai, without her, they still would be friends, but maybe not as close as they were.
I love how constructive this conversation is. You’re both listening to each other and genuinely care about the other’s opinions. I really admire this interaction. 🙃
Thank you! We plan on doing another one, but I’ll make sure the audio is different next time. She’s a really good friend and I respect her opinion a lot so it’s hard not to listen to her. 🙂
As an introvert similar to Rory, I never liked people to know who my crush was because that would lead to them pushing me to pursue them when I didn't feel comfortable *or* the embarrassment of them watching me get rejected. I always felt like until it was official there was no point sharing it.
This! I think a lot GG fans tend to put Rory in a bad light as a friend, regarding to the scene 01:46 where she seemed to ignore Lane's story about her crush. I don't think she's being ignorant but rather just couldn't multitask. Dean was her first bf, it's understandable that she tend to focus on him bcs it was new for her so she wanted to look perfect and avoid doing silly thing.
I feel that rory was a good friend to Lane. My friends from same culture with strict parents couldn't understand my situation and made fun of me which was really hurtful. They left me behind and put it on my face which was a real horrible move. Honestly, rory was there in many ways and I love their friendship
Thank you! I actually wanted to do a podcast originally. I never thought about making UA-cam videos, that decision came out of nowhere. The entry to UA-cam seemed technically easier. Maybe I'll try to do a conversational video at some point soon to see how I do in a podcast format.
I've always thought that Lane and Rory's friendship is very one sided. I don't think she always treats Lane right, or at least, as a best friend would.
Good topic. They do seem to have a really good friendship, but not sure if it is a best friend relationship. Staying with this topic, it would be interesting to see a video on the Lorelai & Sookie friendship.
I thought there were so many glitches because of you and your friend kind of talking similar XD I had to read the title to realize there were 2 people talking XD
@PensiveWhiskers I'm loving that idea 💯💯 But always do what you're comfortable with. Also I love love your videos, and I hope you're not insulted but I put them in my sleep playlist to listen while I fall asleep. You and KierraLovesTv are the majority of my playlist.
It was only in the comments of your videos that i realized anyone thought Rory was a bad friend to Lane. I always thought everyone loved them and thought they were so wholesome and cute. One thing that hurts so much about the end of season 3 is that Rory really wanted to go to prom with Lane. She didn't want to take Jess to the Chilton prom at all. She wanted to enjoy the Stars Hollow one with Lane even more than she wanted to go with Jess I think. It was so real. I like how Lane makes a point of decorating Rory's cast when she first broke her wrist too. That was a very classic Lane way to handle it. There was a plot where Lane was being sent away to Korea for the summer near the beginning of season 2 and Rory is supportive of Lane in that. Did you two prepare and rewatch Lane&Rory scenes before you recorded you two talking about it? Because you both remembered so many specific things to mention. I love it. I didn't notice anything wrong in the audio. I do think you two sounded so similar. I think i can tell which person is you but only when i really think hard about it lol. This was really fun. I would listen to you two do more episodes together!
I gotta give credit to my friend on this one. She offered to do a video with me as a birthday gift and I told her to pick whatever topic she wants. She decided that it would be suitable for two friends to talk about friendship and picked Rory and Lane.
When my daughter died, I had friends close by my side: my high school best friend, my college roommate, and my current best friend. It didn’t matter how often we had been in contact over the years.
Hello, I'm sorry for the delayed response. Your comment hit me really hard. I am sorry for your loss, and I didn't know how to respond. You are absolutely right that we all have friends in our lives that no matter how much time has passed, they will be there for you. I do think that Lane and Rory were set up as those types of friends. They may not have seen each other as often in the later years, but I think they would be there for each other in times of need. It is wonderful to have those people in your life, that no matter what, they will be there. No matter how much time has passed, when you talk to them, it's as if no time has passed.
@@PensiveWhiskers Thank you for responding, even though it may have been hard. When you don’t know what to say, you can always say “I’m sorry this happened to you.” And if it’s for someone in your own life you can add that you will be there with them as they go through. Not there “for them” but “with them” and that doesn’t have to be 8n person. There are no words to say many times: people want to know you will hear the story of their child over and over again and that 5hey are not forgotten. I was very lucky to have people then and now that continue to stand with me. Much love to you and you kind heart. 💕🐝💕
I think part of what makes Rory so private is because she has shared her life so intimately (and often inappropriately) with her mom. She's been forced to be the responsible one in that relationship and hears probably too much about her mother's personal life. Rory is embarrassed by this internally and doesn't feel as comfortable to share things with her mom or anyone.
and then Lane is so extroverted and loves to share bc her mother has repressed that inside of her. it's interesting how close these two are with such different upbringings.
lorelai doesnt really share inappropriate things with Rory? Usually moms who overshare inappropriately talk to explicitly about their sex lives. And Rory is never really forced to be responsible, Lorelai is incredibly responsible shes a single mom who has singlehandedly supported and worked hard for Rory. Because of this Rory has always had the freedom to be a kid and enjoy what she loves
@@AndreaLopez-nt1rn I think you missed the very 1st eps where they were in Luke's and Lorelai literally said dirty jokes to Rory about her didn't get to sleep with Rory's school principal.
I love Lane but I actually found her often times a bit immature and I feel like she didn’t listen to Rory just as often. There were many times throughout the series where Rory was clearly upset about some thing and either didn’t notice or it just went completely over her head like she wasn’t aware of what was going on. And yeah, Rory didn’t always share things, but Lane wasn’t always perceptive to things that were going on with her either. To me, lane and Rory are just the perfect example of childhood friends… You become friends due to proximity and you could have some deep moments but when you’re young friendships tend to be more shallow and they didn’t really evolve much, they stayed in that kind of shallow friendship as they got older. it isn’t until Paris that really gets a friend that is more like her. If you wanna talk about bad friendship, I think Rory treated Paris way worse. She was always denying that Paris was her friend at all, and yet Paris was always talking about how she was her best friend.!
I think Rory doesn't open up as much to Lane as Lane does to her because Rory has her Mom to talk to about everything and Lane doesn't have anyone like that (except Lorelai to a degree) Also, Rory was especially awkward and insecure when she first liked Dean, she didn't even tell Lorelai for a while.
My bff growing up was such a Rory, and there are even parallels to the revival "year in the life" and my bff now. Lots of victimhood and self centered nature. It took many years to realize that she wasn't a good friend to me and certainly isn't now. It's actually really interesting to see myself as much more of a Lane from this breakdown. I'd always been a more open person with my friends, and found that they never really reciprocated.
Now that would be an intense video. 🙂 My friend and I actually went off on a few tangents in our conversation and one of the tangents was about Mrs. Kim. I have so many thoughts. That video will likely be all over the place.
@@PensiveWhiskers She's definitely a complex character but i find her her character evolution very interesting. So I'd would totally watch a video on her even if it is scattered :)
Wowww I was so excited to see that you actually uploaded this video, and again you did not disappoint! Some time ago I suggested it in your comments, so seeing the title really made my day ❤ waiting for your future vids too:)
Exactly, 100%. I really wish the writers had Lorelai and Rory spend less time with each other because everybody felt like background compared to each other which ig is the point
I didn’t like how Lane just got married so she could have sex and that didn’t work out. I wanted lane to end up as a baddie rock and roll drummer living in NYC.
5:01 i also think rory was insecure about being obvious watching dean. If it’s two girls it’s way more noisy and obvious verses Rory’s plan to seem to shop (still obvious but she’s 15 or 16)
I hope I can word this where it makes sense, but can you make a video on how Stars Hollow residents are basically NPC's? Like, you hardly ever see anyone (or even Lorelei and Rory interacting with them), yet everyone is invested in their lives and they're universally beloved? 🤔 also, how they only see a character for plot. Like Rory seeing Lindsey outside the butcher shop trying to make Dean a good dinner, in the store with Lane, then with Lorelei when Lindsey's mom pops off. Other than that, they never see them again lol. I just always found that funny
That is a fun idea! I'm putting it on my "fun" list of ideas. My friend and I talked about background characters for a bit as well (I cut that part out since it was off topic). She brought up a really interesting point about the extras that were chosen for Rory's 16th birthday party. She said that it was an interesting choice to have mostly adults for that scene. It's as if Rory has no peers besides Lane. I thought it was kind of funny as well. When you're watching the show for the purpose of analysis, you notice so many funny things about the background characters.
When you’re from a small town, it’s very relatable. Everyone cheers for the local kids just because they want someone to make it big. Everyone is rooting for anyone who has aspirations to leave the town and do something with their life. Like everyone becomes your cheerleader. How they treated Rory is the norm. But it’s a two edge sword. If you do make it, you’re a hometown hero but also a sellout who isn’t really accepted anymore.
I thought there was something wrong with the audio because you and your friend sound exactly the same! This one was a little hard to get through for me
Thank you for the feedback! I completely hear what you're saying. I had to do a lot of post-recording editing which resulted in an odd sound. I never tried recording with a friend so the conversation is hard to follow. With the added audio issues, it is probably very confusing.
Have you ever thought about doing a take on Lorelei and Lane’s unique relationship? With the parallels/differences between Emily and Mrs. Kim? Just a thought 😃
Lorelai would be a great character to cover. I would like to improve technically (audio and editing) before I touch upon her character however. That is a very good suggestion.
Rory can be seen physically present for lane or helping her, but rarely she is emotionally available. She rarely listen. Generally, whenever lane needs to talk, rory, being a narcissist, is always preoccupied
I always appreciated the fact that while Lorelai will support Lane's dream, she never violates "mom code" meaning if Lane is straight up lying about something, she won't cover for her to Mrs. Kim. When Lane ran away from home and stayed with Rory at Yale, the second Lorelai found out she called Mrs. Kim. Respect to her for that.
My friend said the same thing! (I might have cut that part out, our conversation was an hour and a half long). Lorelai does balance the line between being Lane’s friend and an adult figure.
@PensiveWhiskers I remember a conversation Lorelai had with Mrs. Kim in her shop I believe in season 1. She tells her how much of a good kid Lane is and that she's doing a great job raising her. I believe Mrs. Kim appreciated that (in as much as she could show it outwardly).
I really wanted to see Lane involved with movie night or international grab bag night, game night etc. I always imagine she was first introduced to Rock music through Lorelai, although that’s just my theory.
Lorelai is Rorys bestfriend. so I think by Rorys logic she wouldn't confied in Laine what she wouldn't tell her mother. And yeah Laine is a lot more extroverted we know Laine Is the one who originally approached rory back in kindergarten and we know Laine started participating more in other things when rory left for Chilton. I do think they're not really compatible other than their long shared history. I also think if not for the sanctuary that Lorelais house represents to Laine, they might have grown more distant once Rory went away. that being said, both girls are amazing friends to each other. they both support each other unconditionally. But at the same time it's more of a friendship that grew into a "I'll hang out with when I'm in town even though we don't regularly speak." instead of a "I regularly send you memes " if that makes sense. also worth noting that Laine and Rory hang out more when Rorys relationship with her mother is strained. Laine was always number 2 compared to Lorelai in terms of how we expect best friends to act. And eventually goes down further as Rory becomes closer to Paris.
To be fair, I think I’m the problem. I should have checked the audio quality and the space in which we were recording before continuing on. I’ll work on fixing these issues before I do another conversation video.
I also think they talk about boys together a lot because Lane has nobody to talk to about it and Rory usually avoids the topic with her mom. With Dean she didn’t talk about it at first and then with the whole cheating scandal avoided talking about it completely; Jess was a sore subject because Lorelai didn’t like him and so was Logan because she didn’t really approve of his family and him being rich. It just makes sense for them to vent about boys together.
The Bechdel test. It's a test to measure how women are represented in film and other media. In order to pass the test, the tv/film/book has to have 2 women who speak to each other about something other than a man.
One thing I realized watching this video is that, it doesn’t seem like Rory ever has or experiences equal relationships. Like especially with the people who are her core community. Her relationship with her mother, grandparents, friends, and especially romantic partners is very unbalanced.
I completely fudged up the sound on this one. We recorded in a room that had a lot of echo and the speaking volume varied so I had to do a lot of post-production editing which resulted in a weird sound. I will work on the sound quality.
I don’t like their relationship not because it’s badly written, but because it’s too well written. Friends you thought the world of as a kid just kind of drift away. No fanfare, no big fight, you just stop being close, especially when you’re the one putting in all the effort to keep it going like Lane until you decide to stop watering dead plants. I’m in this picture and I don’t like it 😭
I think Rory got to be more spoiled esp after HS and left Lane behind ~ crummy though yes likely realistic but Lane's musical aspirations just ditched sucks imo
i always felt like they had each other's back no matter what, even when Rory drops the ball for lane when she's going through her own shit and becomes a bit too self-absorbed to me it's just normal teenager behavior. Sometimes at 16 you're not always good at managing your shit. But she always does the big things that matter for Lane without expecting anything back. We don't see Lane doing the same thing much to Rory, but i do feel it's bound to happen offscreen. That's just being a human. Through all their changes and diverging life experience, Rory ultimately tries hard to support Lane even when they're less present to each other.
Lane is Rory’s best friend not Paris. Your best friend is a title or position that you and only you alone can give another individual. Rory and Paris had a few years with some ups and downs. But unfortunately they had a lot of downs. Let’s face it, often times they were in a toxic relationship. If a male character treated Rory that way fans would probably see it much different. I don’t hate Paris and she does have her moments but you could say she can be a fair weather friend. Rory and Lane on the other hand have had a friendship since kindergarten. They also have a much more healthy and stable friendship. They have become more like family. Rory tolerates Paris partly because she can’t seem to get rid of her. Rory and Lane seem to always come back together. I can see Rory and Lane being besties in there 80’s with there children/grandchildren being friends. Paris I’m not so sure? I would also argue that Rory’s relationship with Lane has been her least toxic on the show. Even less toxic than Rory and Lorelei. Sorry if that was too long! I’m just a big fan of the show 😃
Hey! I agree with you there. I was trying to say that I've seen some fans say that Paris became more of a best friend towards the end, because they spent a lot more time together. I think that Paris and Rory did become a lot closer, but you're absolutely right in saying that it's only up to Rory to decide who is her best friend. I also think that Rory's relationship with Lane was a lot healthier. I think Paris tries to be a good friend, but she gets in her own way and sabotages the friendship. Your comment wasn't long at all! Thank you for sharing!

To your point, I think Lorelai said something at Lane's wedding about how Lane noticed Rory because of her band T-shirt, so your theory that Lane adopted Rory at first has evidentiary support.
I think this is one of the most nuanced discussions I've ever heard about Rory and Lan'es friendship.
Yes, I absolutely agree. I also think that Lorelai was a wonderful friend to Lane.
Are you going to do a similar video for Paris?
That is a good idea! I'll add it to the list.
@@PensiveWhiskersThank you.
Wait I am so damn excited about ur channel😭😭😭😭😭 many of my friends don’t watch Gilmore girls so this scratches the discussion itch so welllll
I'm happy that I am helping to fulfill that need. :)
As an introvert similar to Rory, I never liked people to know who my crush was because that would lead to them pushing me to pursue them when I didn't feel comfortable *or* the embarrassment of them watching me get rejected. I always felt like until it was official there was no point sharing it.
Same; I wouldn’t tell a living soul.
Crazy that you put this out today ! This was on my mind all last week 😂
This was so cute! Wouldn’t mind her back for other videos! But with this friendship video especially it worked
Thank you! I’ll pass on the message :). It’s a lot of fun to make a video with someone else. Maybe she’ll join for another friendship video
I feel that rory was a good friend to Lane. My friends from same culture with strict parents couldn't understand my situation and made fun of me which was really hurtful. They left me behind and put it on my face which was a real horrible move. Honestly, rory was there in many ways and I love their friendship
OMG I WAS HOPING YOUD DO A VIDEO ABOUT LANE THIS IS PERFECT❣️❣️❣️
if you made a podcast i’d be tuning in every time i love your opinions
Same
Thank you! I actually wanted to do a podcast originally. I never thought about making UA-cam videos, that decision came out of nowhere. The entry to UA-cam seemed technically easier. Maybe I'll try to do a conversational video at some point soon to see how I do in a podcast format.
@@PensiveWhiskersplease please make a podcast!❤
I've always thought that Lane and Rory's friendship is very one sided. I don't think she always treats Lane right, or at least, as a best friend would.
Yea. Rory being an introvert isn’t an excuse.
I loved this conversation, and the dynamic between Rory and Lane. I also wonder if you will do a conversation or video on Rory and Paris?
That seems to be highly requested! I will keep that idea in mind for a future video.
Good topic. They do seem to have a really good friendship, but not sure if it is a best friend relationship. Staying with this topic, it would be interesting to see a video on the Lorelai & Sookie friendship.
Cool conversation ! Loved your thoughts sharing ❤
I thought there were so many glitches because of you and your friend kind of talking similar XD
I had to read the title to realize there were 2 people talking XD
Hahaha, there's two of me. If I ever do this again, maybe I'll do a partial facecam to avoid confusion (and improve on the audio in general).
@PensiveWhiskers I'm loving that idea 💯💯
But always do what you're comfortable with.
Also I love love your videos, and I hope you're not insulted but I put them in my sleep playlist to listen while I fall asleep. You and KierraLovesTv are the majority of my playlist.
@@ViolexiaTnT Not insulted at all! Very flattered. 🙂KierraLovesTV has great videos! I'm happy to be paired up with her.
We did rewatch Lane & Rory scenes! Our discussion would have been abysmal if we tried to wing it. 😆
I might sound like a broken record, but I love how you pick topics ❤
I gotta give credit to my friend on this one. She offered to do a video with me as a birthday gift and I told her to pick whatever topic she wants. She decided that it would be suitable for two friends to talk about friendship and picked Rory and Lane.
I love the parallel of friends talking about friends :)@@PensiveWhiskers
@@AndreaLopez-nt1rnhave you seen Lorelai?? But she does make a point to max that she keeps her dating life separate from Rory
I think Rory doesn't open up as much to Lane as Lane does to her because Rory has her Mom to talk to about everything and Lane doesn't have anyone like that (except Lorelai to a degree)
Also, Rory was especially awkward and insecure when she first liked Dean, she didn't even tell Lorelai for a while.
I'd always been a more open person with my friends, and found that they never really reciprocated.
i would love to see a video on Mrs. Kim and her parenting style.
Thank you ☺
Neither Lane or Paris were Rory's best friend imo, it was Lorelei, but Lane is close second
Same; I think a lot of us were hoping for that. It was hard to watch her storyline unfold in the later seasons.
If you do make it, you’re a hometown hero but also a sellout who isn’t really accepted anymore.
loved this video!!
HELP I COULD’NT TELL APART THE 2 VOICES
I thought there was something wrong with the audio because you and your friend sound exactly the same! This one was a little hard to get through for me
Thank you for the feedback! I completely hear what you're saying. I had to do a lot of post-recording editing which resulted in an odd sound. I never tried recording with a friend so the conversation is hard to follow. With the added audio issues, it is probably very confusing.
Have you ever thought about doing a take on Lorelei and Lane’s unique relationship? With the parallels/differences between Emily and Mrs. Kim? Just a thought 😃
That is a cool idea! I haven't thought about that before, but that is a sweet relationship that's not discussed often.
Great video! I would love if you did a take on Lorelai.
Lorelai would be a great character to cover. I would like to improve technically (audio and editing) before I touch upon her character however. That is a very good suggestion.
loved this!
Love all your videos!!
Thank you for watching them! :)
Ok but, I can't be the only one who thinks you kinda sound like a calm version of lane, right? :')
You're not alone! I've gotten a few comments from people with that opinion. 🙂
Your audio is messed up lol I’m glad you fixed in the another videos
Yeah... I totally messed up the audio there. Next time I record with someone, I will make sure the sound is better.
Let’s be real, conversations between my friends and I most certainly didn’t pass the bechtel test when we were 16. 😅
Hahahaha, I think my friend's comment about taking the girls' age into consideration rings true.
5:00 Yes! I'm introverted and exactly the same! 😅
Yup, I was the same way in high school so I get where she's coming from.
I think the friendship is close to how sisters can be and maybe even like cousins. Lorelai acts like an aunt also.
I think your on to something with your stars hallow water theory.
I have so much appreciation for anyone who enjoyed that theory. 😄 I know how silly the theory sounds, but it's secretly my favorite.
I totally did the hair thing Lane did once oops
Love this series. Wishing you enough success to afford a new microphone.
I couldn't catch what your friend said - do Rory and Lane pass the (something) test. What test?
The Bechdel test. It's a test to measure how women are represented in film and other media.
In order to pass the test, the tv/film/book has to have 2 women who speak to each other about something other than a man.
Honestly there is no debate Rory is a good friend to Lane
One thing I realized watching this video is that, it doesn’t seem like Rory ever has or experiences equal relationships. Like especially with the people who are her core community. Her relationship with her mother, grandparents, friends, and especially romantic partners is very unbalanced.
Makes a lot of sense when you consider that Rory has been brought up in that manner.
With high school rory, im just like rory is a teenager. Most teenagers are selfish
Please fix the sound somehow
I completely fudged up the sound on this one. We recorded in a room that had a lot of echo and the speaking volume varied so I had to do a lot of post-production editing which resulted in a weird sound. I will work on the sound quality.
I don’t like their relationship not because it’s badly written, but because it’s too well written. Friends you thought the world of as a kid just kind of drift away. No fanfare, no big fight, you just stop being close, especially when you’re the one putting in all the effort to keep it going like Lane until you decide to stop watering dead plants. I’m in this picture and I don’t like it 😭
🥺 Sad but true. I feel this
On the hair dying... what kinda friends do you have? 😂 😂 ofc a good friend would do it again 🤷♀️
Rory is the protagonist so...she is self-centered. That's just it.
I feel like the actress who plays Rory doesn’t have good chemistry with a lot of the other actors, Lane included
