Honestly, the only guy in Rory's life who had the potential to be comparable to Dave was Marty, who wasn't her boyfriend because she preferred Marty's bully Logan, just to have her drunk and crying on the bathroom floor a few episodes later because Logan didn't like her enough for her emotional well being.
I wish Lane had turned the antique store into a record store. Early on in the series, she took an aptitude test that said she was good at sales. So she could have combined her passion for music with a natural talent for sales. If she wanted her kids to grow up in her hometown, that's cool but why antiques?
Short answer: lazy writing. In a practical sense, because if you have an established store with a good inventory built up, a loyal client base, etc., it's a lot harder and costlier to switch to something else. Luke could switch businesses as a single man with few responsibilities. Lane, the mother of twins, has to be more risk-averse than that. I do think there should have been a way for Lane to pursue her music more. Maybe partner up with Sophie and offer to buy the music store from her eventually.
yessss! and have it still say "kims antiques" on the outside, as a reference to Luke who turned the hardware store into a diner. Like a little nod to the beautiful friendship/relationship Lane and Luke had in the later seasons, him being a little bit of a father figure or mentor to Lane.
This makes me think of another couple who deserved better: Paris and Dole. Yes, Dole was a bit odd, but when he declared that he would follow her to whereever she wanted to go after college, it showed he was willing to make that sacrifice just to be with her. And then for the show writers to have them DIVORCE in the revival was a slap in the face to Paris. Also if the show did come back, it'd be great if they brought Dave's character in as an adult (maybe after Lane finds out Zach has been cheating or something? I'm just grasping at any straws to get her and Dave back together lol). Also, I never expected Lane's band would become big rockstars, but at the very least make her a music teacher or SOMETHING! That's cooler than making her a clone of her mother! Gah!
It made me so angry that Paris and Doyle had to get a divorce! They were cute together and I was really happy they ended up together at the end of the last regular season…
I agree!!!! Although it does seem like an unhinged thing Paris would do (divorce him for stupid reasons) and if I remember right Doyle doesn't even want a divorce
Omg yes! Together with lane it seemed that in the Revival, nobody was allowed to have the same big lovestory as Rory herself. If she had happy stable relationships around her in her agegroup the question about the adultery would be far more questionable. This way its the only "romantic" story we get, so we are forced to root for it. They have eliminated the issues and tgemes they couldve worked on with dane and dolis and soley focused on rory. Which tbh was the same they did on the gg but bot as obvious. I get the Thing About her accepting her mother, but you dont have to BECOME her to achieve that. It almost seems that the Message is "dont Rebell on your mother and you will be like her, so be thankful". Which just doesnt sit right with me because it relevates all the emotional abuse lane had to endure as a child and teenager.
finally someone who mentions doyle and paris' dynamic! i feel like theyre both so similar to each other and they both lash out on each other quite often but they obviously love and care for each other. for me the best way i can describe paris and doyle is an old married couple. i enjoyed seeing them on screen nd i wish i could hear more fans talk about then
Hear me out: if not Dave, it should've been Brian. They seemed to actually care about each other and he was good with her kids. At least they would've been cute
I’m rewatching GG now and I try to make myself like Zach but I just can’t. It was the laziest decision to pair Lane with Zach, and it also bugs me how it came out of nowhere. In season one there is an episode where Lane went out with Deans friend, and didn’t like him like thought she will, and I feel Zach has similar vibes to that guy.
Yeah like one season we see Dave saying the speech how much he want to go to the prom with lane ( WHICH WE NEVER SAW BTW) and in the next season DDave's gone and immediately Lane catch feelings for Zach and not even break up with Dave
Love this! Lane totally should have been the charismatic music director at Stars Hollow High. I hated Zach so much for her. Even Brian would have been a better match. Mrs. Kim might have a soft spot for Brian, and I could see him running the antique store with her. Meanwhile Lane could be inspiring a new generation of kids and be the spiritual successor to Miss Patty.
The whole glasses storyline really bothered me. Lane was choosing to stop wearing her glasses, not because she was insecure, but for herself, and Zach just disregarded the fact that she liked it that way and sided with Mrs. Kim. If it was her being insecure about how she looked I would understand them disagreeing, but that wasn't it. She wanted to wear contacts, and Zach and Mrs. Kim being so strongly against it just seemed like another way she was denied self-expression and kept in a box. I'm pretty sure there's a line something like "you're not Lane without glasses" which is really sad to me. It really shows how people didn't really see Lane as someone who could live her own life. At the end of the day, Lane was always made into a fulfillment of others' expectations and decisions instead of being allowed her own life and choices.
"Argue with the wall" SENT ME But seriously, after Dave left the show, why were they so desperate for Lane to be in a relationship? And with another band mate? She could've just been a rocker living her life, and maybe meet someone later (like at a gig, or a bar, or literally anywhere other than the band) but she definitely should have stayed a musician. Why have all that character building just to throw it away? It made sense for Rory because her character arc focused on her entitlement, but Lane was always chasing her dreams
i’m so convinced that there was a scene in the revival where hep alien gets offered a record deal and lane shakes the big studio exec’s hand and the camera pans to his deskplate which reads “dave rygalski” and it’s really great cause it gives dave and the band the endings they both deserve
Oh my, you didn't even go into how her first time having sex was terrible and she immediately gets pregnant. I know that's how it goes sometimes but I was so disappointed that it went so badly for Lane. I feel like if it had been Dave it would have been better, but that is just my opinion that he would have made it wonderful and made sure she enjoyed it.
That's because Gilmore Girl's characters who engage in sex get punished with the storylines. I'll never forget Lorelai saying, "I've got the good kid" when she overhears that Paris slept with her boyfriend. Apparently Lauren G didn't want to say that line either.
Lane deserved someone new after Dave. Dave was a sweatheart, but not her endgame. I would have loved to see a Korean guy. Someone who also grew up in a stricter Korean household, but still managed to pursue his dreams. Someone rebellious, and adventurous, but still wanting to (re-)connect with the Korean culture. It could have been someone with career aspirations in music, or something else non-traditional, creative. Someone who would have lifted Lane up in her career aspirations and helped her reconnect with her roots? Mama Kim would have liked it too, but importantly would have seen that the Korean diaspora may do things differently, but that they're still thriving, doing what they love. It could have been a healing experience.
Yeah they could’ve…. And if that happened, I’m sure I would have struggled with it, in some alternate universe where I didn’t know about the horribleness of Zach, but it would have to have been better!
I agree. And about the rock star part... Yeah, maybe not that, but... maybe she could've own a music shop? Or... she could teach music? I don't understood why she ended up doing the same as her mom? Maybe you don't end up being famous, but you can do what you love? I hate her ending for more than one reason.
exactly! like they could've totally had her working alongside carole king's character in the music shop or being a music director at stars hollow high, or opened a record store or something - maybe a part time gig giving drumming lessons?
@@leilanyx Right? I love all your ideas. She desirved better in every aspect of her life. And even if she stays with Z, Dave could have show up, and inspire her to do more music related stuff. Maybe as a parallel to Jess, Rory, and her book...
We know Lane is based on Amy’s real life best friend and her friends husband is named Dave so I think that perfect fit writing that was given to them was inspired by the couple the characters come from. Maybe Amy was like if Lane can’t have her Dave I’m just gonna throw her with someone close by cause I can’t write someone better. I mean when Dave and her would come up with crazy plans to make drop offs or rehearsals happen it was so beautiful to watch like that’s what it like when you just click and it’s awesome and chill and you can for once let your guard down. In defense for Lane’s story, I did appreciate that it was Lane that came clean to her mom and stood up to be the person she wanted to be regardless of any man. Music was the love that made her brave enough to be herself and really she should have chosen music instead of getting married but oh well. And on another credit to Amy watching Mrs Kim be willing and able to grow past her reservations and the generational trauma that she had from her momma to love and keep her daughter in her life was really nice. At the wedding we see Mrs Kim is Lane to her mom but she stops the cycle of making a moms live conditional and embraces Lane for who she is. Maybe Lane’s story is about her and her mom’s relationship becoming what Emily’s and Lorelei’s never could. And how that love and an average life is a dream come true on its own. A Prince Charming or fortune and fame just may not be needed after all
completely agree with your opinion. while i do believe your hopes and dreams can change as you get older this doesn't really feel like that. the writers really fucked up her story and character. i think she probably had the most tragic story in the show. she really did deserve better :(
Yes and even if the show was trying to be “realistic” I really hated how they wouldn’t allow the show to be fictional in positive ways like having happily ever after in relationships ESPECIALLY for characters that have tried so hard to grasp that kind of life!!! Like Lorelai and Lane they BOTH just wanted to be free and have someone who loved them for them but they BOTH got the sharp end of the stick and had lame mediocre relationship story lines like dude why?? What happened there in the writer’s room I seriously do not understand it. It bums me out that it can’t be changed like it really bugs my entire soul
Even if in life not everything goes like we want, Lane still like music and still wanted to do music so they should use that potencial at least a little
I feel like Brian would had been a good match for Lane after Dave left. Brian is smart, sweet and considerate. I mean do yall remember he started writing a song called Lane just because Zack had written no sings with Lane's name ? I like him so much, he deserved more screen time.
The way I RAN to this video omg. Lane is awesome and you're so right. I never thought about Zach's issue with the glasses, but it makes sense that it'd be demoralizing for her to hear him agree with her mom, when she's trying to individualize via style choices. You're right about the sex thing too, and I think she would have gotten past the programmed response of "I can't til I'm married" if they had eased into it and talked about it more. And that would have been a healthier thing for her long-term because oh my God, her first experience was terrible! Zach at LEAST should have known not to try to have her first time on the BEACH! The only time I really liked Zach was when he wrote a song with Mrs. Kim. His enthusiasm was so pure, and it gave me hope that he and Lane would make their dreams come true together. I was wrong. 💀 Also yeah, the proposal was almost as lame as Max's post-fight proposal. (Maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I don't like Max at all. He was so damn impulsive, and would make things about him that weren't about him. In some ways he was a male version of Lorelai, which is NOT what she needed.) I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention something but my comment is so long already lol. Always glad to see a new upload from you! May the algorithm favor your channel, and may monetization flow freely to you!
Oh yeah, I was going to say that him hitting on Lorelai was, I think, just to show he was a creepy teen boy who was being inappropriate with her. I didn't get the sense he was a lot older than Lane, but I could be wrong.
@@Aelffwynn i feel like zach was maybe a year or so older than lane? so like, 19 or maybe 20, while lane was a high school senior. he always seemed a bit older than dave and brian. he strikes me as the type to have been held back a grade. i also agree with max - i liked him and lorelai at first and they were definitely cute together, but him proposing basically because he was jealous of luke, when i don't even think they'd been together for more than a few months at the point that he proposed, kind of soured him for me. i don't blame lorelai for breaking things off because that always felt like they rushed into it too quickly.
I actually like the aspect of everyone being in a kind of dead-end in the revival. How Rory is struggling in her career, Lane has become her mother and Paris is getting divorced. I like the premise in a 'where do we go from here' type of way. It's a shame they never actually do anything with it. Also I want a Taylor Doose crime drama spinoff because I know that man has killed.
I mean you hit the nail on the head. Zach was a terrible choice for Lane, and if anyone should have divorced in the revival, it should have been them. Plus... Lane getting pregnant after having sex ONCE was really messed up. There seems to be a whole theme in GG of "sex bad" and how women get punished for sex. Just wanted to also add that I love your videos and how kind and considerate you are to everyone. It's one reason that I always keep coming back to your channel.
That is so true! It was so depressing when Lane ends up pregnant with twins after one awful night on a Mexican beach! Plus Zach was a player. Like he's going to be faithful to Lane.
I totally agree! I always found Zach to be an easy writing substitute for a love interest. But ughh! You nailed it, he’s no Dave Rygalski. The way I understand it, Lane is based on Amy Sherman-Paladino’s best friend and Dave was based on her best friends husband. So, in fiction Dave was perfection for Lane, and she deserved nothing less than Dave 😞 and agreed her life should have been much more 😮💨
Dave is literally THE MAN. If I have a daughter (thank god I don't, I'm only 16) I would like her to date a Dave. A man who make an effort, who cares, who tries. Dave is perfect! At least as a boyfriend, and he seams like a very good friend to
gilmore girls is one of my biggest comfort shows but with every rewatch i feel like lane’s trajectory gets more and more depressing and zach gets more and more detestable
Thank You!!! I have always felt so disappointed with how they treated Lane’s character and story. Especially in the revival. Being as she was Rory’s bestie i wish they would have handled her with more care and showed more Rory, Paris and Lane situations. Maybe have a scene where lane and Paris go drinking and get tipsy and discuss the whole Jess, Dean and Logan stuff. You know, the way besties tend to have their own opinions about your love life. Nothing too gossipy but i mean, these are two of the people who know her the best and have literally been there for each of these guys entering and leaving Rory’s life. I felt like they just left Lane at the sidelines with too many important story beats with Rory. And you are 100% right about Dave. Even after he left i wish they would have given her a more serious contender for her affections. She truly deserved better. And all the untapped potential of having Dave and Mrs.Kim interactions. I think had he stayed, Dave could have helped Mrs.Kim understand Lane better. Could have been really interesting development for that family unit because i felt like Mrs.Kim really liked Dave and would have respected his opinions and views. Such a waste.
“A few weeks ago you told me that Lane had a crush on me. Well, I have a crush on her, too. Now, I know you have very strict rules about dating and boys, but I just want you to know that I'm a good person. I don't smoke, I don't drink, I've never gotten a ticket, I'm healthy, I take care of myself, I floss. I never watch more than 30 minutes of television a night partly because I think it's a waste of time and partly because there's nothing on. I respect my parents, I do well in school, I never play video games in case they do someday prove that playing them can turn you into a serial killer. I don't drink coffee. I hate soda because the carbonation freaks me out. I'm happy to give up meat if you feel strongly about it. I don't mind wearing a tie. I enjoy playing those hymns on my guitar, and I really, really want to take your daughter to the prom.”
Personally I loved Hep Alien and thought all the band members were fun, hilarious additions to the show, but yeah--Zach and Lane were totally unbelievable as a couple. Poor Lane, she definitely deserved so much better. (When I rewatched the series, I felt so sad watching Dave and Lane get together, knowing how it would end.) Couldn't they have brought Adam Brody back just for like the last episode or something so they could ride off into the sunset together? That would have been so much more satisfying than having her getting knocked up with twins at like age 20 and being a waitress in Stars Hollow.
I think that having kids and being a sahm/not pursuing a career is just as valid as any other dream, so it's not necessarily "wasted potential" but it feels like wasted potential because it doesn't make sense for HER and her character. I think it would have been great if she was a mom and ended up like Mrs Kim in a few (good and realistic) ways AND also ended up like the lane Kim she always wanted to be. This doesn't have to mean she became a rockstar, she could have even found new passions to pursue :/
They didn’t know what to do with her after Adam Brody left. I think they waited too see what’s happening with Adam hence the California storyline. They set up so for Adam to return. They decided to completely write him out after The OC got picked up. The OC ended around the same time Gilmore Girls ended.
Preach, while I liked Zach fine enough, I don't think that he was the best love interest for Lane. Dave was apparently going to stick around for longer, but then Adam Brody got cast in "The OC", so they had to write him out earlier than expected.
Zach wasn't the worst boyfriend on the show, but he was so mediocre. Up until he proposed he never seemed that into Lane either. And speaking of, I think the fact that it took him like 3 days to decide whether or not he had feelings for her says a lot.
Dave was the perfect mix of encouraging Lane’s individuality and getting along with her mom. They would have had such a great relationship that could have also brought Lane and her mom closer together and taught them to understand each other better.
Completely agree! Obviously it was out of their hands that the actor left the show, but they could have still written her an awesome love story, instead of just picking someone out of convenience. Her entire plot was pointless and did nothing but her the show.
Even though the actor was leaving to go to another show, maybe they could've looked into Lane and Dave having a long-distance relationship. The actor could've given voice recordings and not shown his face so they could 'talk on the phone' whilst he was filming his other show, and done cameos here and there to have one-episode limited storylines with Lane that fit into his OC filming schedule. Lane and Dave just went through so much to be together and to have it end so suddenly like that was unjust. They were too perfect together and it's sad to see how they fell apart.
I love Dave. I wish we could have at least seen them at the prom after Dave went through so much effort to convince Mrs. Kim to let Lane go with him. I loathe Zack with a fiery passion. Remember Dean's friend in season 1, I think his name was Todd, who Lane had a crush on until she realized they had nothing in common, and he was an idiot? That's Zack! When comparing Zack to others who foolishly proposed after a fight, he's not like them... They are better. Max and Chandler both have brains, and both did things for their significant others that Zack would be too selfish to do. Dean is better than Zack too. Other than being smarter, Dean made efforts for Rory that Zack wouldn't. Would Zack have learned to ballroom dance so that Lane could have a coming out? Heck, Dean even joined Rory in a grueling dance marathon, just to have her mooning over Jess while they did. Would Zack have built a car for Lane, when he refused to even write a song with her name? Dean reads books that Rory wants him to, even though a person shouldn't have to read the same books as their significant other, he understood the Rosemary's Baby reference, he learned how the Rory and Lor dynamic worked, even trying to educate Max on it, which if Max would've listened more to Dean, it would've prevented at least one of the Max/Lor fights. If Zack is like anyone on the show, he's more like Liz's idiot, bad tempered boyfriend/husband T.J. I could totally imagine Zack knocking a hole in the wall without thinking about it. The closest the GG writers ever come to making Zack look like he has a functional brain is when he talks about the book The Divinci Code, but he was just using that to hit on women. Zack's behavior towards Gil was appalling. Zack was sleazy and violent as evidenced by his behavior when he ruined the band's big shot. I've spent much of my life around musicians, and his behavior makes me livid. The band should not have broken up at that point. They should've kicked Zack out of the band, never to return, and hired a more dedicated band-mate who didn't have anger management issues. Lane being in a relationship with Zack crushed her spirit. She didn't need to become a rock star... she could've had a job to make money, but on the weekends had gigs at bars and clubs working with band-mates who had a passion and work ethic to make music. It felt like when Dave left because Adam Brody had the other show, the writers just threw her at a random band-mate. Brian would've been a better match for her intellect and musical passion. And she didn't even have to be paired with a band-mate... it could've been another musician, not in their band or someone not in music, but was her intellectual equal and supported her following her passions. What the writers did to Lane's character genuinely sucked.
I agree with everything you said in this video. I’ve always felt this way about Lane and Zach , he’s an arrogant asshole and it should’ve been Dave. The fact that he proposed after they fought and then the whole glasses thing pissed me off the post
Zach is a literally a child. He throws tantrum and wants to be taken care of. That's why he acted like the pregnancy was not happening. Lane will have to take care of everyone.
Ah yes! If I had to pick between Doyle and Paris or Lane and Zach on who’d get divorced it’d be the latter I mean she didn’t even like having the devils tango with him.
I feel like Lane was just always so forbidden to even be a remotely sexual being (and I’m not saying she should have been allowed to have sex or something) but she couldn’t even show that she had an interest in a boy or God forbid hold one’s hand anywhere her mother could possibly show up. I think Zach just was there when she was rebelling and he made her feel attractive and that’s just something she never really got to experience. I don’t love Zach, I did like Dave better but I’ve met girls like her that have been trapped in a box their whole lives and taught sex or sexual attraction is inherently evil and they tend to pick the quickest, safest bet available that make them feel desired.
I was about to say before this even started “I wish they made a prequel or sequel” about the Kim family…a Korean version of “fresh off the boat” but bit more realistic
my thoughts bc this vid has brought up emotions i thought i suppressed lmao: lanes story ending feels like it was supposed to be about the reality a lot of "small town girl, big city dreams" type women face- getting pregnant and married too young to the wrong person, and never leaving ur hometown (despite ur ambitions and prospects) bc of it. it feels like a "harsh truth" type thing. major issue with that? gilmore girls is ultimately a feel-good show. it doesn't mix w the tone of the rest of the characters, dialogue, episode plots, etc. Its legit so irritating to me bc its so so disappointing to see someone so passionate just fizzle out into a life she never really seemed to want :( its even more frustrating pre-revival bc it seems like rory gets so many second chances and lane just,, doesnt. (and this could be a meaningful commentary on class or intersectionality of race and gender, but nah, thats not done either) overall, probably the most enraging character arch on the entire show!! bc it felt like there was so much potential and the writers just like threw all of it away for some weak attempt at portraying a different reality w a character compared to rory (but then not expanding on the implications of it or even like writing it in a way that made sense lmao)
I really wish we would've had one more scene of dave saying goodbye to lane just as kinda closure, and well of course lane not ending up with zac cuz zac and lane just do not work together
Yes Dave was great, but I think we are all forgetting Henry Cho, the Korean boy Rory introduced to Lane, who was from Chilton. He was the real mvp and the one Lane should have ended up with, imo
They really could have done more with Zachs character - even though our first impression is an aloof flirt, he was essentially a blank canvas for the writers to expound on. While it should have been Dave, Lane and Zach could have still had a humble life while being a local success with small tours here and there across the East Coast. This is a plausible event considering that Myspace took off while they were young adults and could have capitalized on their internet success for the revival.
We need a whole video on how abortion is never an option for the characters despite being [cough Sookie] "accidentally" falling pregnant. What kind of best friend jumps straight to, "You'll be a great mom!"
Zach was always so blah to me, but when he purposefully threw a man-sized tantrum and ruined not just the band’s chance to impress a scout but Lane’s chance, his girlfriend, who he KNEW was really hoping to be noticed by the scout, I actively disliked Zach. The fact that he thought a good way to fix things was to propose to Lane afterwards was just…horrific. I so wish Zach had sought out the scout and apologized or begged for a second chance and won Lane’s approval back. But no. Ugh.
Thank you for this video! To me it shouldn't have been Dave neither Zack, I would have loved to see lane achieving her dream to a be a drummer. Not necessarily a rock-star or super famous just living her life doing what she loved the most, music and having man and the whole boyfriend drama in a second place on the list of hers priorities.
Could not agree more. Early Gilmore Girls Lane is driven, funny and passionate, but more importantly, she was going places! They writers gave the the most depressing story line, working at a dinner with a mediocre husband (not that being a waitress is bad, I literally am one but its not what she wanted.). Rory wasn't a good enough friend to her and always used her as a soundboard for her own problems! P.S Lanes mum always gets a hard time. I know she was strict and closed minded but she always wanted what was best for her daughter. I think its really unrealistic that she approved of Zach, not because hes white but because he was so average...
Thank you for this video, I feel relieve for the points you made. Zack was horrible to Lane the whole time, that episode about not writing a song for Lane was just... And no one pointing that to her. I'm sorry for Lane just like I am for what they did to Rory in the revival.
(using this comment section to rant im sure we are talking about the same stuff HAHAH) okay im on a gilmore girls rewatch and i’m very passionate about lane’s ending & lindsay’s character. a lot of people are against zach because they want her and dave to be together but I DONT EVEN CARE WHATEVER dave was great to her but i could care less about a love story. i just wanted to see lane succeed and go off and do what she loves. she never got to. zach sucked the life out of her & stole everything from her and she became what she resented. zach was so selfish and never really cared about her, there’s a scene where he thinks that him and lane are getting a divorce & HE BARELY CARES AT ALL. i just can’t even do this storyline it’s ridiculous.
The only thing I can’t hold against Zach is his reaction to Lane being pregnant, same with Jackson. Especially since the couples weren’t planning it, I think it’s okay that their initial reactions weren’t positive, it’s honestly realistic. People who are trying to get pregnant react with “OMG YAY WE ARE PREGNANT!!!” because they were trying for that outcome. People who get pregnant unexpectedly, even if they want kids, react with a mix of emotions.
I look at this two different ways. Narratively, I think they were lazy with this story and didn’t give Lane or Zach the time they deserved. They could have developed his character at least a little. They could have gotten him to the level of Jackson at least. Zach had potential to be an interesting character. He could have been a slow burn. He and Lane could have learned and grown from each other, but instead he stayed right where he was and she regressed into something she didn’t want to be. But if I put this in the context of the real world, Dave left and never looked back. This happens in life. People who you think are a really great match… who are attentive and considerate of your feelings… they sometimes aren’t what you think they are. Or you weren’t what they thought you were. And they leave and never look back. With that in my head, she shouldn’t have ended up with Dave or Zach. She deserved someone better. Honestly, I think she deserved to not get tied into a serious relationship so early on, and instead have the chance to pursue her music goals. It drives me kind of batty that film and tv push that narrative so hard… that success and happiness and fulfillment come from either romantic relationships or money and nothing else.
They did Lane so dirty. I couldn't stand Zack. Never mind him being a jerk, but what really pissed me off is that he and Brian went through her room to spend the band's money WITHOUT Her permission! Who would want to marry a guy who does that?
I agree with everything you. Dave was much more mature than Zach and dedicated himself to the relationship. Lane would have been happier with him than Zach because Zach is clueless and a bit dumb. Dave literally read the whole Bible for her in one night. Also, Mrs. Kim seemed to like him more than Zach and would have definitely approve of them marrying. Dave all the way!
Ok, I’ve heard the “that’s reality” argument so many times for Lane’s story or Rory’s shitty behavior (the affair with Dean & kissing Jess when she and Logan had a fight) but…my counter argument here is that it’s a show. Weave elements of reality in but don’t destroy beloved characters in the name of “reality.”
I know Brody was suppose to have a larger role on the show & I'm sure it was always suppose to be Dave but Brody had movie role aspirations & I believe ended up with larger roles on other TV shows but I agree, Dave should have been the one. Lane was one of my favorite characters on the show & it sucked that they regulated her as an afterthought.
The O.C. give Adam Brody the biggest job of his entire career. With Gilmore Girls he would have been boyfriend of the sidekick. I can’t be made at him for leaving.
Dave is the man of my dreams, but irl we end up with Jess kind of guys because they disapear... Not but really, Lane is my favorite character, in the later seasons when I *hate* Rory, Lane is my motive to continue watching. So seeing her not even being a music teacher or having a fullfilling relationship is harrrrdddd
I don't think we can really blame Brody leaving the show for why Lane's character was never centred around, oh idk, Lane herself and not her partners. That was why her story-line sucked without Brody - because he was the better actor and the story was very much about him and how great he was, not because the writing was better while he was working there
They really should have been endgame tbh & if not Dave then Brain & I hate how they wrote Lane's character. I agree with everything you said in this video.
Brian had more chemistry with Lane than Zack… and that’s saying something (although I love Brian). He loved learning about her culture and always listened to her. Obviously I wouldn’t have wanted them to end up together either, but I’m just saying. They could’ve had the music shop owner have a son/ nephew who worked there and Lane slowly fell In love with him and took over that shop. Idk. I just wanted so much more for her
Ignore the weird crop you guys. I’m still tryna figure out how to work Final cut pro & ily guyssss
Zach is okay, but Dave literally spend entire night reading BIBLE for LANE
i would cry ❤
So what anyone can do that
They tried to make Zack cool by writing a hit to be with Lane, but it was useless. We need Dave Ragulski🧎♀️🧎♀️🧎♀️

Dave is literally the best boyfriend in the show. he's even better then all rory boyfriends compared
Edit: omg thanks for so many likes
FR
You’re right AND Rory didn’t have the growth to deserve a Dave 🤐
So true, it was the dedication for me 🥲 he read the whole Bible for her 😂
Honestly, the only guy in Rory's life who had the potential to be comparable to Dave was Marty, who wasn't her boyfriend because she preferred Marty's bully Logan, just to have her drunk and crying on the bathroom floor a few episodes later because Logan didn't like her enough for her emotional well being.
I feel like it’s a bit absurd to act like Marty was some kind of prize. He was a horrible boyfriend to Lucy, and he acted so entitled to Rory.
I wish Lane had turned the antique store into a record store. Early on in the series, she took an aptitude test that said she was good at sales. So she could have combined her passion for music with a natural talent for sales. If she wanted her kids to grow up in her hometown, that's cool but why antiques?
ooh
@@verstrickt.und.ausgerechnet omg I absolutely love this idea
OMg its such a good idea
And the fact that Paris STILL had a crush on some random guy who was mean to her in high school.... Like what was the point?
At least they would've been cute
yeah I liked Brian way more
YES!!! Zach had "goofy uncle" vibes way more than "husband and father"🙄
Yes!! Zach is too ooga-booga caveman. Him and Lane had zero chemistry!!
yess! in that episode where zack thought that brian was into lane i was like wait that would acc be so cute!
when he wants to write a song for Lane so she can perform a song named after her.
I’m rewatching GG now and I try to make myself like Zach but I just can’t. It was the laziest decision to pair Lane with Zach, and it also bugs me how it came out of nowhere. In season one there is an episode where Lane went out with Deans friend, and didn’t like him like thought she will, and I feel Zach has similar vibes to that guy.
literally- the most lazy writing i swear
10000% agree!!! Ugh 😡😢
Meanwhile Lane could be inspiring a new generation of kids and be the spiritual successor to Miss Patty.
that would have been perfect
I agree! ❤ Writers were lazy.
"Argue with the wall" SENT ME
But seriously, after Dave left the show, why were they so desperate for Lane to be in a relationship?
I saw that scene omg I thought it was just me (joking for anyone else reading this)
No
@@lauriecarson6483no what? It is just an idea
the fact that Dave read the whole bible for lane got me my standards so highhh
Oh my, you didn't even go into how her first time having sex was terrible and she immediately gets pregnant. I know that's how it goes sometimes but I was so disappointed that it went so badly for Lane. I feel like if it had been Dave it would have been better, but that is just my opinion that he would have made it wonderful and made sure she enjoyed it.
I know!! That never sat right with me and it always stuck out in my mind as one of the most upsetting story choices in the show 😩
That's because Gilmore Girl's characters who engage in sex get punished with the storylines. I'll never forget Lorelai saying, "I've got the good kid" when she overhears that Paris slept with her boyfriend. Apparently Lauren G didn't want to say that line either.
@@sashatheelf ohh interesting, do you know where you found that she didn’t like that line?

@@vanshome7612 ?? I was asking for a source. I actually found the source so my comment isn’t relevant anymore but I don’t understand your reply
They could have just replaced the actor for Dave, since Adam Brody got casted in the OC, with someone else and kept the Dave/Lane storyline going.
Yeah they could’ve…. And if that happened, I’m sure I would have struggled with it, in some alternate universe where I didn’t know about the horribleness of Zach, but it would have to have been better!
I wanted to see an on-again off-again ldr I think that would have been cute and interesting to watch
I agree. And about the rock star part... Yeah, maybe not that, but... maybe she could've own a music shop? Or... she could teach music? I don't understood why she ended up doing the same as her mom? Maybe you don't end up being famous, but you can do what you love? I hate her ending for more than one reason.
!!!! Exactly. “Maybe you don’t end up being famous but you can do what you love”
@@kierralovestv 😊💙
exactly! like they could've totally had her working alongside carole king's character in the music shop or being a music director at stars hollow high, or opened a record store or something - maybe a part time gig giving drumming lessons?
A Prince Charming or fortune and fame just may not be needed after all
completely agree with your opinion. while i do believe your hopes and dreams can change as you get older this doesn't really feel like that. the writers really fucked up her story and character. i think she probably had the most tragic story in the show. she really did deserve better :(
Yeah like i wanted to see lane music career :(
Yes and even if the show was trying to be “realistic” I really hated how they wouldn’t allow the show to be fictional in positive ways like having happily ever after in relationships ESPECIALLY for characters that have tried so hard to grasp that kind of life!!!
YES totally agree here. And ty as always 💕
I agree with everything including max!
I agree & thank you!
I totally agree! Every character is punished for having sex, with the exception of goody two shoes Rory
That is so true! It was so depressing when Lane ends up pregnant with twins after one awful night on a Mexican beach! Plus Zach was a player. Like he's going to be faithful to Lane.
they should've just introduced a new love interest. was disappointed they settled for Zach. felt completely random
At least as a boyfriend, and he seams like a very good friend to
"argue with the wall"....hahahah love your delivery! So on point! 😂
gilmore girls is one of my biggest comfort shows but with every rewatch i feel like lane’s trajectory gets more and more depressing and zach gets more and more detestable
In alternative universe writers didnt earse Dave from the storyline and, him and Lane get married 😍
5:50 - so many people just faded from the show. It’s maddening.
Lane was done dirty 😞
I've never agreed with a title of a video more before I've even watched the video! Dave and Lane forever! ❤
They did Lane dirty. The whole series, after Dave left, she didn't have great story lines at all.
They didn’t know what to do with her after Adam Brody left. I think they waited too see what’s happening with Adam hence the California storyline. They set up so for Adam to return. They decided to completely write him out after The OC got picked up. The OC ended around the same time Gilmore Girls ended.
my favorite thing in the world now is singing along to your theme song. it's so happy-making
Love your take as always!! They could've had Dave hiding like Mr Kim 🤣 jk...
Exactly
Or just recast ? It’s not ideal but it would have been better that Zach
Yes! I was waiting for Dave to show up again ☹️.
I can't believe how prissy they made her look in the revival? she just got out of that a couple of year earlier, this is just so frustrating
Love adam in the o.c he was really great on the show I really was sad he left Gilmore girls
Ah yes! If I had to pick between Doyle and Paris or Lane and Zach on who’d get divorced it’d be the latter I mean she didn’t even like having the devils tango with him.
Lol the song in the end makes me think of Ratatouille and now I’m going to watch it on my way to sleep 🤦🏾♀️ why do I watch so much tv ugh
her story is heartbreaking when you think about it for half a second. she deserved so much better fr
I am so happy that somebody else feels this way.
I wish that they had created a new character to pair with Lane instead of just pushing Zack on her. He never made sense as a boyfriend for her.
Only going off of the title of this video but THIS 🙌🙌 more GG fans need to address this
It should have been David, they had so much chemistry
I was definitely disappointed with lane's ending for sure
my thoughts bc this vid has brought up emotions i thought i suppressed lmao:
lanes story ending feels like it was supposed to be about the reality a lot of "small town girl, big city dreams" type women face- getting pregnant and married too young to the wrong person, and never leaving ur hometown (despite ur ambitions and prospects) bc of it. it feels like a "harsh truth" type thing.
major issue with that? gilmore girls is ultimately a feel-good show. it doesn't mix w the tone of the rest of the characters, dialogue, episode plots, etc. Its legit so irritating to me bc its so so disappointing to see someone so passionate just fizzle out into a life she never really seemed to want :(
its even more frustrating pre-revival bc it seems like rory gets so many second chances and lane just,, doesnt. (and this could be a meaningful commentary on class or intersectionality of race and gender, but nah, thats not done either)
overall, probably the most enraging character arch on the entire show!! bc it felt like there was so much potential and the writers just like threw all of it away for some weak attempt at portraying a different reality w a character compared to rory (but then not expanding on the implications of it or even like writing it in a way that made sense lmao)
Best intro, I have ever seen
when they first started showing Zach as a romantic interest I genuinely thought it was a joke and I wish it had stayed that way😭😭😭
They really could have done more with Zachs character - even though our first impression is an aloof flirt, he was essentially a blank canvas for the writers to expound on.
@@radhiadeedou8286 Yeah, an unrealistic friend who has a very limited perception of life
I saw the title and immediately yes.
But no. Ugh.
I have never liked her husband's character! I agree with you! I am glad she finally made peace with her mother and her mother finally mellowed out! 💕
Agree completely with your evaluations. So disappointed how things ended up with Lane's character in the revival.
Yup I agree. Not a fan of Zack with lane, he just seems indifferent to the entire realtionship
You should do an episode on Kirk. I'm invested in theseGG series
i would never get why the fuck lane settled with ZACK after dave literally read the whole bible in one night for her that was unbelievable
i made a playlist for their love because they are the best couple to ever exist
The only thing I can’t hold against Zach is his reaction to Lane being pregnant, same with Jackson. Especially since the couples weren’t planning it, I think it’s okay that their initial reactions weren’t positive, it’s honestly realistic. People who are trying to get pregnant react with “OMG YAY WE ARE PREGNANT!!!” because they were trying for that outcome. People who get pregnant unexpectedly, even if they want kids, react with a mix of emotions.
Lane deserved so much more omg
They could've just changed the actor and kept the Dave storyline 😭
You should review the OC! Id love to hear your thoughts
For someone who doesn't watch Gilmore girls, I am obsessed with your videos analysing them
😊 thank you
Lane was totally done dirty.
This is exactly what I was thinking the whole time watching Gilmore Girls! Lane's story could have been so much better.
Fun fact: Lane is loosely based on Helen Pai (Amy Sherman-Palladino's best friend) whose husband's name is Dave Rygalski
I agree! when I first watched I thought this guy was the one for her…then she ended up with
I know Brody was suppose to have a larger role on the show & I'm sure it was always suppose to be Dave but Brody had movie role aspirations & I believe ended up with larger roles on other TV shows but I agree, Dave should have been the one.
That was why her story-line sucked without Brody - because he was the better actor and the story was very much about him and how great he was, not because the writing was better while he was working there
I miss Dave
They really should have been endgame tbh & if not Dave then Brain & I hate how they wrote Lane's character. I agree with everything you said in this video.
Brian had more chemistry with Lane than Zack… and that’s saying something (although I love Brian). He loved learning about her culture and always listened to her.
Obviously I wouldn’t have wanted them to end up together either, but I’m just saying.
They could’ve had the music shop owner have a son/ nephew who worked there and Lane slowly fell
In love with him and took over that shop. Idk. I just wanted so much more for her
i'm watching the show for the 2nd time and GOD i was thinking the same thing, zach is so annoying, i miss dave
I always felt so sad bc Dave didn't end with lane
She should've just stayed single if Dave's actor had to leave the show. But oh wait characters in this show cannot exist without a partner it seems
