I like even the single-action holsters with a thumb break snap. It doesn"t look historically correct but I like it. I also wound up making a sort of hybrid flap holster with a flap that covered only the hammer and the cylinder of the single action revolver. About half of the grip was left uncovered by the flap. It didn't turn out to be a pretty holster, but it was functional in my neck of the woods. It keeps the sawdust off of the cylinder indexing cuts so the cylinder doesn't freewheel when I cock the hammer back. I've heard a bear in the woodcutting area a couple of times too many. When the chain saw makes so much noise it makes it sort of spooky to know there's a bear in the trees behind you.
Thumb breaks are a great way to add retention. They can be a bit tricky to get right for some pistols, but revolvers are not too hard. Stay safe out there, chainsaws maul more people than bears do.
@@bransonsgeneralstore Make the belt loop a square or your favorite shape. Run it up to the front side of the holster in a pleasing shape if you feel like it. Space it up a little if it's a cross draw. To allow some space for the belt point to fit into the holster belt loop if needed. Then sew on the belt loop before lining and use the extra leather up top for the snap locking straps. I don't use the metal tab to stiffen the inside snap for the locking straps. I don't really need it. If the leather is wet and then drys it's plenty stiff without the metal stiffened tab. But if you really want one Tandy sells them.
Sounds like a monster of a handgun. The biggest revolver holster I have made was for a Smith and Wesson 460 with an X frame. BFR would be even bigger with a longer cylinder. A couple of videos I have talked about how to make patterns, I don't remember which ones.
@@bransonsgeneralstore yeah, it's a massive revolver but I figure I'll make the holster with an open end so the 10 inch barrel is showing. With cross draw it'll be more of a carjacker holster when I'm out on the ranch or for hunting. Maybe for those rough trips to the local Walmart too.
Geeze..., You make it look so easy! I have a question for you. I've seen holsters that look almost an orange/red color or a glossy terracotta clay color. How do you get that color? Maybe you could do a video just on colors or mixing dye's for custom colors? Just a thought. Great video and thanks for sharing 👍
Most mass produced holsters are made with leather that was drum dyed at the tannery. Three colors are common. Black, British tan, and chestnut. British tan is a lighter golden brown with a bit of an orange tone. Chestnut is a brown that often has a lot of red in it. The gloss just comes from the finish sprayed on them.
You might try dying the leather with saddle tan to start with. Then let it dry completely. If you don't the dye will turn a dark color. Then dye the leather with mahogany dye or ox blood whatever you have on hand or prefer. Then let it all dry completely without polishing the leather by wiping it hard with a rag or whatever. The polishing before drying makes the color darker also. Then if you want to experiment with reduced dye. Reduce the saddle tan and or the reddish dye until you get the results you like. Some dyes can be reduced with rubbing alcohol. I am not a pro leather worker so you might want to do some research on how to reduce different types of leather dye. Some people might want to mix the dyes together. It's up to you.
I draw them myself starting with a tracing of the firearm. Usually I trace it, roll it over across the sights and trace the other side then add about half to 3/4 of an inch all the way around depending on the thickness of the firearms frame or trigger guard. Then just add on the type of belt loop, clip, or paddle I need for the occasion. I do sell PDF copies of the patterns I make on our Etsy shop. Link should be in the video description.
I currently am only selling the patterns for holsters online. Since I still have a regular full time job I can never find the time to catch up the work I get from local people so I haven't made that leap to online orders.

I need to make one of these for the Magnum Research BFR 444 Marlin I'm buying. Holsters don't exist for them so I gotta make my own.
