That little trick about screwing in a 2x4 half way through the cut out of your countertop is just plain great!!! Thanks for sharing.
That’s so nice to hear Jerome. Thanks for letting me know! I’m happy to help. Good luck with your install!
Thank you for this!! I was so worried about spending tons of money on custom countertops and realized I could get these laminate countertops for a good deal. But I don't have any major tools so I was worried I wouldn't be able to customize these to my kitchen. Your video shows me that I don't need anything crazy other than a jigsaw (which i actually have!) I feel so much more confident tackling this on my own now. Thank you thank you thank you!
You can get an amazing kitchen with laminate. Yeah, you have a jigsaw that’s great! Take your time, you’ll learn a lot and believe in yourself. You can do it! Thanks
I have been doing this work professionally for decades, and I really appreciate your videos. I believe many people are encouraged to take on projects they would otherwise not. And they do so because of your easy-to-understand explanations. You are a credit. Just a share: I polyurethane the entire underside (especially above the dishwasher) and any cut edges, both ends and cutouts. I have found that to work better than silicone. Keep up the great videos.
Hi John, thanks! I appreciate you sharing your advice and tip on polyurethane and going above the dishwasher. Smart. 💡Keep up the good work!
Thank you for guiding me through this and showing how easy it is. I had installed the rest of my ikea kitchen but for some reason was so afraid of cutting the counter to length and cutting the sinkhole. I was able to complete my project. My sinkhole came out perfect and so did the side cuts. It turned out so great that I bought the matching counter to use as a backsplash which I will need to cut to height. Thank you so much.
You rock Melissa! Thanks for sharing your experience so you can inspire others to do the same. DIY is one of the best ways to grow your confidence and skills. You also get to enjoy the benefits of your work which is amazing. Well done! I’m inspired by women like you who have the courage to try something new! ❤️👏🏽
Nice job with the narration…..to the point, clear, concise. It’s appreciated.
Thanks Ken, I’m happy you found it helpful. To the point is my goal.
Great work showing how to avoid the most common installation failures. Fine tooth saw blade, pre-drilling jigsaw pilot holes, using tape to reduce laminate finish chipping. Another amazing, quality production!
You’ve got a good eye for detail Mihr! 👏🏽Thanks!
How do you cut laminate for a corner if you’ve got a curved edge??
Love the videos! Excellent tutorial!!
Glad you found it helpful Jeffrey! Thanks for letting us know!! 👍🏽
Girl I stumbled on your videos to see if I can do this install myself. I feel inspired. Liking and subscribing.
You can. And you will. We can learn to do anything. Believe in yourself!

Very helpful video
Nice Daru, the only suggestion would be to go more into the end caps of how to trim it neatly because if we don't do a good job there it will look really bad. But again, nice video and right to the point!
Thanks for the suggestion! I agree that it would be helpful to go into more detail there. Your feedback is helpful for improvement!
Another winner Ma'am
Thanks, great to hear! I'm working on a video in the coming weeks that you should find interesting.
Can you install an undermount sink on these ikea laminate countertops?
I need to get silicone to seal my sink as well.
Didn't help me . I have metal ikea FIXA strips, 39cms long. I need to know where to put these. Do I need one or two for each cupboard. Where do I attach them?
Id love to see you do a Van camper deckout!
That would be amazing!
You should not feel bad about this. I just did the same thing. Sh_t happens! TY for the video.
Wise words thanks Joe
♥️
Extremely Good ! Packed with Information. You mentioned Laminate Blade for Jig Saw. Do you recommend Reverse Blade or Straight Cut and what thickness to prevent Drift. Do IKEA sell the Contact cement to glue the Edge Strip. Thanks a mil.
Excellent question about jigsaw drift! It’s important you have a sharp blade. Don’t push the saw, let it do the work. Make sure the blade is installed straight and take care in the corners. Change blade as needed. The blade I used is linked in the description box. It’s a good laminate blade. Good luck with your project Brendan! Thanks for watching. 👍🏽
contact cement you can get at Staples Target, HD or Lowes or a craft store
Great video! Where did you get the edging band from? Or how did you choose the banding so that it matches the countertop finish? Thanks in advance!
Hi Nour, the countertop is from IKEA and most countertops will come with the laminate edge. You'll be ready to go. Thanks for watching and good luck with your DIY!
Each ikea countertop comes with two pieces of about 30" long each.
Thanks for the info.
How big is your sink? And is that Sektion base cabinet?
Hi Theresa, the Sektion base cabinet is 24” with a 21” sink.
I have a question i'm having trouble getting answered. I have an L shaped counter so I need to cut for a corner. Now i'm pretty sure i should do a 45 degree angle cut on both pieces and meet in the corner right? The IKEA instructions say to only do straight cuts. Can I do a 45 degree angle cut without messing up the counter?
Yes you can cut on a 45. I don’t have a video but hopefully you can find one on UA-cam. Good luck with your project!
How many teeth on the saw blade? The hole for the sink should be undersized by how much? Any words of wisdom on prep for the faucet?
I should have the saw blade link in the description. The kitchen is compact so it is a smaller sink. As big as could fit. Tape the countertop first with painter’s tape and drill through the top carefully with a hole saw. Have a photo of it on Instagram. All the best Karen!
👍😘
How did you get the sink to stay when you flipped the countertop?
The sink clamps that I screwed down - hold the sink in place. They clamp and hold your sink tight with your countertop. You can also run some silicone around the sink opening before dropping in your sink for additional water protection. Thanks for the question Mariah!
Will the exposed surface of the cut needs water proofing to prevent water from sipping in and cause swelling and warping?
You should protect the cut edge with silicone
I've installed 3 of the Ikea laminate ,and they are very prone to water penetration, not only on the cutouts but on the cut ends and bottom edges. After returning one for warranty, due to water damage, I decided to seal every joint and the under the edge all the way around. They're probably best used in dry locations in my experience.
using the MDF as a guide for your saw is a great idea. however, is there a reason why you didn't use the same trick as a guide for your jigsaw?
I didn’t use a guide because I installed a drop in sink and the cut edge is not visible. You could always use one if you find it helpful.
If you haven’t used a jigsaw before you could also test out your cuts on your old laminate countertop if you’re doing a replacement. Thanks for the question!
@@DaruDhillon would it be okay to install an undermount apron sink with the IKEA laminate as the countertop?
@@anthonywallace2129 Hi Anthony, they make undermount sinks, designed for laminate countertops. The brand Karran makes them. They look great but I haven’t tried them. I would check the manufacturer’s requirements to see what they specify. It’s important to have a good watertight seal around the sink opening so I would opt for a sink that is designed for laminate. Good luck with your project!
Are you soliciting offers for installation?
I’m always working so I don’t seek out work. But I do enjoy sharing what I’ve learned on the job. If you like DIY projects please consider subscribing! That’s my only solicitation 😉
Which counter top model is that one?
Hi, this is the Lilltrask IKEA countertop.
@@DaruDhillon Is it strong? I have been thinking to use it as a desk 🤔
@@sumasawa7101 yes it’s very strong and durable.
@@DaruDhillon ❤ thanks
the instructions suggest coating the sink openning to prevent moisture and bulging when wet. You neglected to mention this which would be crucial for the long term of maintaining a laminate countertop. i only clicked on your video to see what you did but it doesnt seem like you did anything. I'm going to use flex seal instead of the caulk recommended in their provided instructions.
You must have missed the graphic in the video that says to use silicone around the sink opening. IKEA recommends using silicone. Silicone is typically used for wet areas like sinks, tubs, countertops and showers - in high moisture environments. I can’t comment on the product you want to use because I haven’t used it. A siliconed sink will last a exceedingly long time. The product you want to use contains high VOCs so be careful using it indoors. Good luck with your project!
@@DaruDhillon Don't pay him no mind he's from NY.
@@DaruDhillon you are so classy.
also, might this (possible future swelling) be why with a ceramic ikea sink the instructions have me cut a hole into the counter that is slightly larger than outside of the sink? i couldn’t understand why i’d need to silicone the hole if it wasn’t going to touch the sink!
You get sink clips with an Ikea sink, NOT the counter tops
Yes, that’s right! 👍🏽
So i need to buy two different saws☹️
Do you have a friend who’s saw you could borrow? I hear you. I’ve been there too.
@@DaruDhillon I was just in Lowe’s and Home Depot and they don’t do the job he said I would need to hire outside contractor… so I said let me check it out on UA-cam this looks pretty straightforward…. Yes I’ll ask around friends and relatives about the saws thanks!
It’s straightforward. Take your time on the cuts and if you have a sink with a template it’s much easier. Good luck! 💪🏽
