I think the story of SM2 is more of an introduction to Warhammer story, rather than trying to be a masterpiece of writing. Ultramarines 2nd company & Cadian 8th regiment, both the poster boys of Imperium, VS Tyranids, xenos enemy of latest edition, and the Thousand Sons... slightly spicy choice, as opposed to Black Legion or Word Bearers, but any CSM would suffice for to introduce the elements of corruption, heresy etc. After the main story, the other game modes introduce the variants of both loyalist and heretic factions, with little fanservice here and there. Of course, you could try to make a story that is both great AND great for newcomers... but perhaps writing a truly compelling story is more risky than a basic cookie cutter Space Marine tale, and they couldn't afford the risk. I would have loved to get more from the story too, but at the same time perhaps I'm not the target audience for the story mode.
Yeah, the first game was many people's first introduction to Warhammer. But that was 13 years ago. It makes sense for the sequel to try and replicate that sort of mass appeal to get people into the franchise.
I wish we could get the same level of customization for our characters as Moonbreaker allowed. Imagine being able to fully paint your own Space Marines.
