@YeOldeGeezer Yes. The Challenger, the 5511, the Centennial 6936 and a bunch of passenger cars were donated by the UP to the same company that owns and restored Milwaukee 261. They bought the old Rock Island shops here in Silvis, IL and have already started stripping 3985 and 5511 down for rebuilds. They're doing those two at the same time.
Daryl, I’ve been watching you and the layout progress for the last 18 months. I’m in total awe of what you’ve accomplished to date. The new 4x8x4 excursion train is just beautiful. It will be exciting watching this train go along especially once you finish with the scenery. Happy railroading !!!!!!!!!
Actually the whistle goes just behind the smokestack like it is on the Big Boy and the Challenger. Where you have it in the video is where some excess steam or some type of foam comes out. I don't know the specifics of how it works
12:20 that is the whistle, somebody may have already said something but here you go. It sits right behind the stack just before the smoke box transitions into the boiler.
Great looking train Daryl! The Challenger, UP 3985, was pulled from service ca. 2010, as it needed repairs, and all the steam program time and money went towards restoring Big Boy, UP 4014. UP 3985 has been removed from the roster and was donated to Railroading Heritage of Midwest America. It now is awaiting restoration in the old Rock Island shop complex at Silvis, IL. By the way, UP 844 is the only mainline steam locomotive in America to NEVER have been retired. It has carried several numbers, but never left the UP roster. It was built in late 1944 as a passenger engine (like all the FEF's on the UP), went into freight service in the 1950s and was held for use with an experimental; snow melter at North Platte (which kept it on the roster) then the requests for steam excursions started coming in and UP kept it around. Very impressive and handsome model of the Union Pacific fef locomotive 844, hopefully I will be able to purchase one of these models for myself in the future as I really love the UP fef class series. Athearn Genesis and BLI have both produced models of the UP fef class Northerns, I want a version of the fef 4-8-4 model in the "greyhound" paint scheme as that scheme is spectacular looking. This was an enjoyable operation session of the UP special excursion train tour and the 844 model is fantastic, Tom.
Really impressive! I model old and new Lionel in O gauge. I can't imagine taking 12 minutes to lap my layout at 40mph. I can't wait to see your layout finished. Very neat!
Very cool! In regards to the headlight, June 2013, the locomotive's gyrating Mars Light, installed in 1946, was removed because its mounting bolts had deteriorated. I think the headlight that is on the model is the same from original production. I would not run a diesel behind it....Steam locos are more reliable anyway. :)
Hello Daryl, I’m Kevin and I live in San Antonio since retiring from the Army (Infantryman). I’m a first time visitor to your channel and I’m impressed with your work. I picked up a second hand Athearn FEF-3 that’s about 6 years old and it runs great like yours. In my opinion you’re great at public speaking and you don’t use “filler words” that makes videos somewhat annoying as the presenter discusses things in their videos. I think you’d be very successful at doing interviews or talking on topics we enjoy in this hobby. Some people are able to convey a well energized tone that keeps people attentive throughout the video which is what I’m experiencing watching yours now. Thanks for taking time to make a great video for us during your busy schedule working on your layout which is amazing. If you’re here in San Antonio, please stop by our train club called SAMRA, you can find some videos on YT showing our layout. Thanks again Daryl.
Daryl, what a great addition to your railroad, it looks amazing and sounds amazing too. An excursion train on you layout? We’ll done, I’m liking it it! Ron
Howdy Daryl! Very cool excursion train! I wish I could recall the specifics, but I remember a couple of times in the 90's when I was still a firefighter we would have to go out and fill a pretty big steam engine that always stopped for water in one of the yards on the edge of town. I remember thinking 'wow' lol. Thanks for sharing!
Excursion train looks great so happy you were able to get one I do think it needs a few more cars. With that being said I am really enjoying watching every week seeing how far the layout has come and watching it on the big screen makes it even better. Keep up the good work. 😁
Hi Daryl from a cold wet mid Winter in New Zealand. I've been watching your channel since you started and it's been great to watch your journey with this layout. I've long been a fan of the UP heritage fleet. I couldn't imagine our government run railway doing that. The part you mention looks suspiciously like the steam whistle, as I couldn't see one during your review. Keep up the great work mate
Hey, I know I'm a bit late to the comments here, but that piece that came off is the whistle, and yes it goes there, but the black part goes in the hole, not the brass painted part. That part is the whistle itself.
Daryl, beautiful train, in particular de engine! UP does run their excursion trains w a diesel on the consist, so…that may help the locomotive go up the hills on your layout! Just a thought…so it does not get worked too much!! Congrats and enjoy!!!
They do not always run a diesel with the loco. When it's there it's just in case the steam engine has maintenance issues and does not get stranded on the mainline. The steam loco has plenty of power.
@@EvanstonSub Another explanation I've heard is (in the case of 4014 anyway) that the diesel carries the full complement of PTC equipment which in turn feeds data to a PTC display in the steamer cab. Also, having the diesel means you have access to dynamic braking.
Love your layout immensely. I see you double lay your gauze, which is great. Since this is the same old school cast material doctors used for casts.
