These tips seriously DO work. Yesterday I was too depressed to tidy the front room. So every time I got up for the bathroom, or to make a cup of tea, I picked up one item and put it away. By the end of the evening the front room was tidy and I got myself a nice early night 🌞
I can’t afford therapy, so everyday I’m gonna watch a video rod yours and write in my journal at the same time. This really helped me to tonight, thank you 😊
Yeah it’s a good way to do it. I did therapy but it takes a long time to find a therapist/ psychologist that works well with u. So if this channel works for u then thumbs up
I truly enjoy your support and your generosity of professional knowledge along with genuine tone. Adding your personal stories shows we are all in this together just trying to do the right things and strive towards our best selves to make a positive impact . You are so appreciated.
My husband joined or local youth baseball/softball board and that's been great for him. Giving back and having a sense of fitting into the community and getting out of the house and having some adult time away from the kids has all helped him tremendously.
Been struggling with major fear and anxiety. I do not know how your videos made it into my feed but I am forever grateful it has. I cannot afford therapy, it's discouraging. But since I found your videos a few days ago, they are helping me manage and now I'm learning how to change my brain. From my heart, thank you so much. You are truly a blessing. GB you. I've made notes of all your tips and gonna start my Joy Habit calendar. 😊
I don't like habit tracking, actually. I tend to focus on the missed days and I ignore all the checks. And if life happens (as it always does) and I can't cross off my goal (breaking a leg makes it a lot harder to reach your step goal), I'm demotivated. Instead, I have a "menu" of things that I enjoy (bike, yoga, walk, fresh fruits, reading, music...) and I try everyday to pick something from that list - whatever I have the energy for - and I simply focus on enjoying it in the moment.
I do this too! It really helps me focus on all of the things I have done instead of worrying about all the things I didn’t do. I use it for food as well. Instead of thinking about all of the things I shouldn’t eat I set a goal of eating the food I should be eating. It makes it a lot easier to eat healthy because by the time I’ve had a serving of carrots, or spinach, or whatever, I end up craving the bad stuff less and feel more natural motivation to eat healthy foods. Plus I don’t feel nearly as guilty when I eat something unhealthy.
I need reminders of things like this, I end up working hard to overcome depression/anxiety and feel good for a while, and then some kind of big stressful event happens and I just come crashing down. Its hard, when you are in the middle of it to pull yourself out and do 'normal'. Not having a support system also makes it hard, so coming to UA-cam to find people like you is extremely helpful. Thank you for what you do.
I have severe anxiety. Being able to work from home during the pandemic has done wonders. My stress went down significantly. I am worried about going back to work in an office.
Hi my name is Suzie. I have a panic disorder. When I feel that I'm going to have a panic attack I usually have to Stop what I'm doing and take slow deep breaths. I tell myself that everything will be ok. God tells me every time I feel one coming. Listening to Christian music usually helps me. I love listening to Chris Tomlin 😍 his music helps me a lot 😊😀
Gratitude when I find it within , oft mental assertion, but the actual awareness of what we’re grateful for is healing to the soul and elevates us in way we could do with anything else . Fullness of gratitude, is pure freedom
I’m severely agoraphobic, but I’ve set a goal for myself that works on both my Agoraphobia and my physical health. I’ve started talking intense, long outdoor walks. I’m motivated (don’t like that word but it’s the best I can think of) to do this because my Father passed away in December 2020 after a Pulmonary Embolism cause his already poor health to decline. I’m quite lazy and I don’t want a DVT/PE/Heart attack to take me out at 23
January is so dark, not much sunlight plays a big role in depression. This is what works with me… go to Home Depot, and go walk down the aisle with all the bright lights! They are always on, and they are so bright my goodness! You can actually feel the warmth, feels like you’re in Florida. It is so bright and I must say it does something to your mind. Just hang out in the aisle for about 10 minutes, it’s really amazing!
Worth listening to a couple of times. Full of good stuff - particularly like exchanging a beautiful photo each day, reading (Garrison Keillor!), writing down good stuff you experienced, bringing joy to others, rounds of full, slow breathing (do any time). PS. Try planting some seeds on your kitchen counter, nurture them, watch them grow. Extra - take lots of vitamin C and niacin.
Small things are making me despair today like my family selfishness but also a minor thing you said. You can't get worse than worse. Worser is not necessary or grammatical but thanks for your great help and advice.
I've had to change from extreme issues. It's about belief imho. The DSM has nothing on how to learn how to feel good about yourself. In the end, working with one very smart PhD, I learned to what I truly believe and spend my time thinking about. It's truly a habit. Joy and feeling good, cannot out-number constant conscious thoughts about the opposite.. Our unconscious gets programmed with *whatever* we spend our time on. It's a real trick to change.
I started recording good things and gratitude as a Lenten project. I've kept it up because it really does work, and the journal entries are lovely to read back afterwards. Thank you so much for these videos - - I love them!
I’m gonna get out and walk more👍 I do crochet which I love !!! that’s my passion so I just made a beautiful baby sweater for my daughters coworker for her baby which is coming in July and it just brings me so much joy to crochet I am a crochet items for friends and family all the time sometimes I give myself just time to relax! and watch a lifetime movie in the afternoon lol I’m trying to learn to go easy on myself and take it slow. Ps Easier said than done some days take care and God bless
I’ll write down these habit-ideas and my values and then schedule into my calendar one daily activity or task that’ll support me in living more in alignment with my values. I’ll tell someone I trust what I’m working on and ‘evaluate’ in 30 days.
I struggled for YEARS with the whole meditation thing...I now use guided meditations, self-hypnosis and yoga nidra sessions from the Mindful Movement channel and I can't recomend them highly enough. They have been life changing for me.
In the spirit of practicing happy habits, I want to thank you so much for your videos, Emma! Words can't even begin to describe how much they've helped.
I meditate all the time once you understand that it is a state of mind you can do it while walking. The best way to describe it would be to feel yourself floating in a way that is calm and quiet with the universe. Nothing distracts, sways or breaks that connection…..you simply stay in the moment. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for your channel. So much of what you share proves the Bible to be true. The JOY of the Lord is your strength!! Joy is different than happiness…
Mowing the lawn made me happy, it's a small lawn and I have a small lawn mower on battery, it goes very quickly, 5 mins and I'm done and it looks clean, fresh, and great!
Oh I forgot, I find my guitar, books, cat, Hong Kong movies, art, and just the accomplishments of my earlier years in taekwondo, drawing, painting and just writing I love the simply act of doodling and random jotting especially my plans and things to do….but I got to get exercising too. music and collecting books about quality also float me 🤩
Love this channel, has helped me a lot over the last year, my mental health has gotten better even though I still have bad days. However, I'm feeling quite sad today. I need lots of prayer for my dog, prayers he doesn't have cancer. Waiting for a test result, about a month later will be doing a blood work for another test. He's 12 years old and I can't bear the thought of losing my boy 💔 I've been crying last few hours. Sorry if this was totally off the subject from this video, but I needed to get it out.
I’ve been feeling overwhelmed with the things I’ve let pile up so I started an accomplishment log. I write down with bullet stars everything I accomplished during the day. I also write down anything that is bothering me in that day. A helpful thing is to go back and read what I accomplished and what was bothering me. I find it’s all so ephemeral and doesn’t matter much in the future what I was so irked by in the past. I will write down happy things too, but those don’t happen very often. I find I am wanting to do tasks as I want to have something to write down in the log.
People forget little daily rituals are so beneficial. While going away for the weekend is great happiness. It’s the little rituals you factor consistently that make you feel great overall.
You really have to find hobbies, habits routines and activities that support happiness and healthiness, brains and happiness both depend on what we do consistently. aerobics, meditation, making music, deep breathing strategies, reading philosophies, getting out in nature, also self love is huge help for me. also I quit other forms of social media four years ago (huge difference) and quit caring about the news in 2010. Also yes practicing gratitude helps me be less pessimistic or negative. So glad I have obtained a job last May that I enjoy for the most part. Also I'm glad I get to volunteer when I can. I try to laugh every day even if its fake or forced. Also dance more often if you can! maybe this will help others.
I am currently suffering of depressions and anxiety after my bf ghosted me on exact Xmas day. When I first watch your videos I was enlighten. And this new video helps to improve my condition. Tq so much
THANK YOU for taking the time to create such a beautiful and useful video and sharing your knowledge with us! As always, I am so very grateful to have found your channel. Much Love to you and your beautiful family
What an up lifting video! After seeing one of your videos last December that mentioned a gratitude diary I started doing it and have only missed a couple of days since. It has really helped with my walk through my experience of depression, I’m so much better than I was in December!
Love this 3 part series. I'd be ever so grateful for a few more like these. Merry Christmas to you, your husband and lovely daughters. Thanks for helping in the past 2 years. 😍
Yes! I do so many of the things you mentioned here. I especially love being in the outdoors - it's a great way to ground yourself. Happiness is so important for our well being 💛 - Julia
So, my days in college taking Psychology I saw aspects very similar to your lesson you shared with us. Plus, being apart of the Fire Department I still us all these positive aspects. Thank you very much.
@@sharynm79 You can create playlists within UA-cam! (I'm on a laptop fyi) Just under the video, there's the Like, Share, Download buttons and then a ... menu, right? Click that ... and there's an option in that menu to Save. Click Save, and there's an option to Create New Playlist. Give a name and then save your video! I have approx 500 playlists for different things, lol!
I struggled with meditation until I hired a teacher from the Transcendental Meditation organization to teach me. It was a course and the best money I ever spent. I started in 2009. I'm learning a ton from your videos. Thanks!
Adding something to my to-do list that I enjoy is something I never even considered. Instead I generally beat myself up for not getting everything on the list done. I will try this, thank you for the suggestion.
Your counseling is awesome,,some apply some don't but there's something for everyone,,mine is adapting to change "what use to be ",how to cope , has been difficult, .
In my case it is more difficult. All my life I suffer with Avpd, but now this depression destroying my soul, so I am looking for a way to help myself. Thank you so much Emma! Great help!
I'm happy by nature and I watch videos like this to remind me of the zillion ways to intercept a lower mood or thoughts. These things really work! Thanks.
I just found your channel and have to say that you are absolutely amazing! I've watched so many videos on motivation, how to snap out of a funk, etc. but every time there has been some sort of sales pitch or lack of practical application. You are amazing. Thank you soooo much for keeping it real and providing such sound guidance. Sending you a huge virtual hug! Keep fighting the good fight. :)
I will try to keep up meditation or one of your 9 minutes exercises, drawing something.. anything, and continue writing in my diary every day. I am very easy to fall off when starting to feel better only to end up where I started.
Write gratitudes on the bathroom mirror! I love doing that. Great books. All creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. There are 3 books are they are hilarious. Laugh out loud funny. I never read a book twice except Herriot books and the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.
Hi. I for one love the outdoor segments. What I am going to suggest, and I hate calling it it's name ( in the video/audio production industries), is a "dead cat" mic cover. They make them for clip-on lavalier and shotgun mics. It cuts wind noise to nearly nothing. Keep up the great work. And thank you for taking time to do what you do for us.
I love feeling happy and when around certain ppl they dont like to see me happy. I am going through alot but I am grateful for the smallest things in my life . I sing share with ppl kindness with ppl I think happy thought.at time I get down.
I love this Emma! ...how you focused on the solution rather than I problem! I have seen a need for that in my life lately! Last week I hung three pieces of paper on a door that's used often in my house with a pencil attached to yarn dangling within reach. I wrote on the paper "write down something you feel happy about " My family and I add things to the papers at random. It's been good to notice the happiness feeling and write it down and it's also nice to see what others are writing! ("Sleeping in", "dad jokes ", "singing in the car", "no dirty dishes"...) 🙂
You have helped me so much with your videos. Have you ever covered How to cope with someone who irritates you down to your core? Like on a molecular level? Someone you can't escape because married them and the divorce is still a little ways down the road? I find myself feeling near rage at the very presence of this man. When he comes in to the kitchen and starts crashing and banging around, running commentary on everything he is doing I have to grind my teeth to remain silent and not just scream at him. Or when he insists on blasting the tv at some insanely loud level while also watching videos on his phone at some crazy loud level, I just have to leave the house. Etc... How does one diffuse this intense emotional and mental result in the face of that which is inescapable? Have you a video for this? Thank you for all you do for us here!

This is an excellent idea! I hope you are able to find growth and peace for what is troubling you.

If you look around I'm sure you could find some affordable decent therapy.
Yeah it’s a good way to do it. I did therapy but it takes a long time to find a therapist/ psychologist that works well with u. So if this channel works for u then thumbs up
Agree!!
Dear Emma Your series has changed my life for the better. Thank you so much.

Seconded! :)
Never really thought about her videos in that way, her generosity. For that ,my gratitude is truly genuine, what a great person

I know how it feels. If you could afford massage or walk with someone who is close to you it makes all differnt. 💜
you might enjoy walking dogs for the shelter or fostering....
Sometimes when I don't have much energy I just clean the bathroom sink, it's quick and easy and at least something got done.

Haha! I have done that exact same thing in desperation! I LOVE the lighting aisle at Home Depot!!!
I head for the garden section. That always puts a smile on my face.

I started crocheting again and it brings me so much joy. I just made a flower brooch.
I am starting to work on this, that it is just feelings and it will pass and you will see tomorrow. BE HAPPY!!

"Feel worser" 😅, that brings me happiness and joy!! Love your channel!!
That was so cute! 😂 She is so cute!
When your wearing a winter coat and sitting beneath a rain cloud, while simultaneously saying it's a beautiful day, you know your happy :)
Every day IS beautiful, depends on our outlook.
My joy muscles are grown by my daily journaling. Journaling, for me, is very calming; very soothing. I journal before I set off for work for the day.
you! never stop doing this, no matter who or what discourages you. you really are making a difference in the world!

Gratitude is so wonderful. It refills your heart.
Mowing the lawn made me happy, it's a small lawn and I have a small lawn mower on battery, it goes very quickly, 5 mins and I'm done and it looks clean, fresh, and great!

This channel is the answer to some of my prayers. God Bless you! ✝️❤️
I like the idea of taking a picture of something I like and sharing it.
I'm going through the same thing w my dog. It's difficult.
What gives me joy is watching Emma McAdam's inspiring videos.
My therapist has me stepping up my gratitude game by adding in WHY I am grateful for things.
I agree that making things is awesome too!
Gratitude is so powerful! 💛
super insights, very practical approach to change things in small ways
thank you.
Just LOVE You!! Thank you for all you do and share!!!
Uploaded this to my 'daily self care' vids! Thanks for the Positive Boost, Emma!! 🤟❣️
Thank you so much for your videos! Take care, God Bless you and your family!
I find I am wanting to do tasks as I want to have something to write down in the log.
so good! i am trying to walk for longer and see different places, it definetly helps me😀😀
Spending time outside in nature always make me feel serine.
I made some muesli today with the oats i had,it didn't taste like the one I'm used to buying but I'm glad made it..
Doing things that makes me happy 😊

You are so amazing! I am so incredibly grateful for you and your free workshop videos 🙏🤗
Funny that the last tip is making something and I am crocheting roses while watching this video! 😁

Being creative grows my joy muscles
So, my days in college taking Psychology I saw aspects very similar to your lesson you shared with us. Plus, being apart of the Fire Department I still us all these positive aspects. Thank you very much.
Thanks! I plan to write in my gratitude journal every day, make some thing in my craft studio, and clean up some areas of my house.
What brings me joy is reading and my friend amber!!! She really helped me with some very difficult times and helped me get courage
This is a video that’s going in my weekly reset playlist! I really appreciate doable suggestions. 🥰
Great idea. How do you create a weekly reset playlist???
@@sharynm79 You can create playlists within UA-cam! (I'm on a laptop fyi) Just under the video, there's the Like, Share, Download buttons and then a ... menu, right? Click that ... and there's an option in that menu to Save. Click Save, and there's an option to Create New Playlist. Give a name and then save your video! I have approx 500 playlists for different things, lol!

Fabulous idea! Might have to look that up myself. 🙏
Great tips. I avoid the nightly news and meditate. Thanks
This is perfect timing I needed this video today.
Adding something to my to-do list that I enjoy is something I never even considered. Instead I generally beat myself up for not getting everything on the list done. I will try this, thank you for the suggestion.
Just started watching your vids. You're so real and down to earth and practical. Thank you. Glad I decided to click.
Gratitude tonight😊

Such a sweet voice and caring disposition. Thank You !
I loved this! Thank you. And the background duck noises were a great touch. Loved them too! Cheers & blessings.
I will try to keep up meditation or one of your 9 minutes exercises, drawing something.. anything, and continue writing in my diary every day. I am very easy to fall off when starting to feel better only to end up where I started.
Making joy a habit … that resonated with me . I am going to pick one joy activity and make sure I do it every day.
So good. Thanks, Emma. You've been such a blessing over the last year that I've been watching your videos.
@ 9:00...Sounds like that duck was in agreement with you...lol Happy duck!
I do appreciate the amount of work you put into your videos! So well constructed with valuable concepts! Thanks for posting!

great advice. I love that you make this so accessible. Clean one dish !
Write gratitudes on the bathroom mirror! I love doing that. Great books. All creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. There are 3 books are they are hilarious. Laugh out loud funny. I never read a book twice except Herriot books and the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.
Even the geese are getting happy with their hysterical laughter! 9:00-9:45
You are wonderful Emma. Thank you for making these videos that are so helpful.
Whenever i get disappointed with my anxiety , your videos save me 🌝

Setting people up to be happy, hey! Good work Emma!
I love this Emma!
...how you focused on the solution rather than I problem! I have seen a need for that in my life lately!
Last week I hung three pieces of paper on a door that's used often in my house with a pencil attached to yarn dangling within reach. I wrote on the paper "write down something you feel happy about "
My family and I add things to the papers at random. It's been good to notice the happiness feeling and write it down and it's also nice to see what others are writing! ("Sleeping in", "dad jokes ", "singing in the car", "no dirty dishes"...) 🙂
This is so awesome! It made me smile ☺️
Whatever this is, I needed it badly. Thanks. I'll be supporting!
Yes this please
14:45 I'm literally on the treadmill right now 😆
