Resilience is a skill that can be learned, and I was watching a creator who totally embodies it, Laura Kampf, she’s such a great example of resilience.
When it comes to being more resilient a lot of people probably think that being more resilient means “Just try harder” “Suck it up” “Get over it” or “Just push through”. They think that the way to be more resilient, the way to overcome obstacles is to just force yourself to be motivated and keep going even if things aren’t working. And, while grit is a great characteristic, just forcing it can’t be your only tool. If you really want to be more resilient, you’ve got to have a toolbox of skills to rely upon when it all hits the fan.
So in this video you’ll learn 6 ways to be more resilient. And I’m going to give you lots of examples of how to be resilient from Laura’s channel. Let's get better at feeling.
Resilience means to bounce back. So for example, rubber is resilient. Resilience means getting back up just one time more than getting knocked down. I think some people think mental strength comes from just being super tough, super strong. But I would disagree. Ice is strong, but it’s not resilient. Resilience is a combination of toughness and flexibility.
It’s not just trying the same thing over and over again. It’s not just trying harder. It’s not just willpower. It’s trying something differently. So let's watch some an example of a resilient person:
00:00 Resilience is a skill that can be learned
01:09 What is resilience- Resilient people have 6 characteristics:
02:06 1. A belief that everything is Figure-out-able
05:21 2. Resilient people ask for help
07:14 3. Resilient people build skills to tolerate emotions
09:39 4. They focus on what they can control
11:27 5. Flexible thinking is a sign of resilience
13:55 6. Laughter and resilience

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

1. Everything is figure-out-able
2. Looking for help
3. skills for tolerance, don't be ashamed of emotions, taking breaks
4. learn to focus on what you CAN control
5. flexible (mindset), accept failure
6. Laugh about it if sh*t hits the fan
You're welcome. You got this!
My biggest pet peeve is everyone always saying “seek help from a professional.” That’s like saying “go to the moon.” Unless you have $200 to spend per hour of help, or even $100 or even $50, which takes many many sessions to really build a relationship with the counsellor and work on things, then it is not accessible. I am not ashamed or hiding a need for help. There is just no way to “seek professional help.”
Anyway I do get good information online and your videos are super helpful and all of these online videos and articles are a blessing. I just wanted to say that professional help is not an option for most people
yes its like "hire a lawyer" Ok. right.
Sometimes the seek help from a professional means call a crisis line
I used to have that resilient mindset. I always said " you just have to be smarter than the problem." And somewhere along the way I lost that. Thank you for this video ❤️ it was much needed.
My favorite UA-cam therapist made a video about my favorite UA-cam maker. Pure happiness :)
I do enjoy Emma's content but this video sounds like a patronising Sunday sermon
she will be back to winning ways soon hopefully
For me, part one of resilience building is to understand and acknowledge your current resilience levels and tolerance
I’m stuck early on in this vid. So renovating a house you could afford to buy and alter to your liking is on par with wading through problems like war, racism, and poverty, which harm specific people on a global scale? I’m honestly not trying to be one-track minded, but the level of concerns certain people have are like a thorn in the eyeball to people with literal life and death issues to navigate- daily.
I'm such a huge fan of Laura's. I honestly don't know how she faces the constant issues with such good attitude. I strive to be more like her. What an inspiration.
True, but we also don’t see what’s off camera. That’s my thoughts.😅
Resilience = Adapt × Rebuild
Someone once told me ‘failure is feedback’
Which gave me a whole new approach to my studies, and while I still don’t love when I have to repeat an assessment, I’m not so hard on myself about it now
She is such an inspiration! I’ve followed her during the house renovation and I have been amazed how positive she remains and keeps on going!
If we ask for resilience… expect struggles to come in order to build it… resilience is a skill and like any other skill it takes time to learn 🙏🏽😁
Very GOOD
Of COURSE STRUGGLING IS A PART OF OVER COMIN THE PROBLEM DUDE
RESILIENCE IS A SKILL....
ALL ADULT CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS, DRUG ADDICTS, & MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE OF SICK PARENTS HAD TO DEVELOP TO SURVIVE THIS LONG ... ALMOST 60 YEARS ALIVE DRUG FREE, SOBER THIRTY YEARS, 1/2 MY LIFE...
VERSES BOTH PARENTS DIED OF ACTIVE ALCOHOLISM ,& ADDICTION!
NOW I WATCH MY BROTHER DIE TOO OF ACTIVE ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ADDICTION AND GAMBLING ADDICTION TOO.... NARCISSISTIC ABUSER ON TOP OF HIS OTHER SEX OFFENDER ISSUES
And expect for people to begin demanding it of you for the rest of your life.
This kind of mindset is very hard to train for me.
But I’m making progress.
I’m proud of that.
I’m slowly becoming more and more resilient.
It makes a HUGE difference if you have the finances in this case plus she has ppl willing to assist her. I have resiliency in general...yet there's only so many hard hits one person can handle at one time especially if there is not a strong support system as much as I keep assisting others. Where is the Pay It Forward program? We are all supposed to be in this world together... to make it a happier and smoother place for everyone❤
Even Laura's surname shows she is a fighter 💪🏽
Mr lady , you don't have idea how much peace you brings to my life, thanks a lot for everything ❤️❤️❤️
I go for walks to help with trauma, I agree with Emma if you don't reach out it can get worse and possibly even be the end for you.
It is so cool that you are using Laura Kampf as an example of resilience. I love her videos and yours and am not afraid to tell people about both of you! So cool to see you two here. I bet Laura was chuffed about this too!
Adversity is our greatest teacher, but it takes a real change in mindset to see it that way when in the midst, for me anyway. If we can distinguish minor setbacks from major ones, it's easy to get kicked to death by grasshoppers, as the Buddhists say!
Working on building my resilience. “Fail forward” is a term I recently learned. When things go wrong it’s a redirection to the solution.
resilience is sometimes criticised as not being good enough, now it is better to be antifragile!
This is great for young people. Not for post 60yo s facing no career and no money with 3 kids dependant.
Sounds like you’re in a hard spot. I am 60 with two dependent daughters. Things are tougher in many ways than when I was younger. And I get frustrated that life’s challenges never seem to stop. But I do find I have more wisdom & perspective on my side & that this helps to compensate for youthful energy. I rely a lot on dark humor just to keep laughing & try to find small ways to nurture myself every day - even a quiet moment with tea & toast & knitting or a hot shower. Cold showers give me an enormous boost as well. 😂 I want my girls to remember my example when they get to be my age - I hope it makes them smile. I hope you can find some comfort & inspiration somehow. 💗💗💗
@@SN-sz7kw Thanks for the kind words
I need to pull myself together.
Emma is only trying to help
cheers

Just like some others have said, I really needed this today. I'm 65 years old and I have cerebral palsy. The older I get the more difficult things become. I need to start working out again to strengthen all my muscles, especially my legs. I'm in a bit of a catch-22 because how do you strengthen your muscles when you feel you are too tired and weak to workout? After watching your video, I am determined to find a way to start again and build on my progress. Maybe isometric exercise is the best way for me to resume my workouts. Thanks again!
Do what you can. Only have enough energy to work out 2 minutes, then make the best of of those 2 minutes. 2 minutes is better than none and eventually you'll make it to a point where you can do more.
@@cheerbeerification thanks!
Little by little one day at a time x
Thanks for sharing Ken! 💙
Your welcome Charlie
I just do my best, I find if you ask for help it's hard to get it but when I do I am happy for the support.
Thank you ! You've helped me fill my bag of coping skills!!😂
This is so great! I really admire Laura and I’ve been waiting for someone to make a video about how she deals with failure and her general upbeat attitude during her builds. So cool!!
I Love this motion graphics , also recap at the end of the video is very helpful to recall the information and learn better. Thanks for your helpful content❤.
Laura sent me here, subscribed!
😊 this made me so happy. Especially cause Laura is also often featured in the kids program "Sendung mit der Maus" (the show with the mouse) and she's my daughter's favorite, as she's the one that always finds creative ways to build interesting things. Such a good role model 🎉
I watch Laura and I agree. I love that she doesn't give up and figures it out and always laughs even when she might want to cry.
This also made me wonder if I am resilient too because while I used to get depressed. I don't anymore. I thought I just grew up and decided to not give a flying .... Eff anymore. But I touched on at least three of those points. I'll have to check out your anxiety videos if you have any and send them to my daughter.
OMG! learned about your channel by watching Laura talk about how you had used her videos! This was wonderful... I've been watching Laura for years. She's a kindred spirit and I love her beautiful approach to life. I didn't realize it was resilience. Yes! I really enjoyed this video and look forward to spending more time checking out Therapy in a Nutshell❤
She is not alone, she has help, so it's not difficult to be "resilient". It helps not to ask people for help when nobody wants to help.
Thank you. I was thinking that I'm not resilient - almost - at all. But the renovation as an example made me rethink and gave a good example of the direction to develop.
I watched this video because I have been struggling lately and wish I was more resilient. What I realized is that I actually am pretty resilient, and doing research and asking for help is part of that. I’m down now, but I’m trying to get back up. Thanks for helping me feel a bit more positive about myself and reminding me that everything is figure-outable, even if I haven’t figured it out yet.
Oh wow! I've recently discovered your amazing channel and have learned so much from you and to see one of my absolute favorite UA-camrs - Laura Kampf just made me happy. Worlds colliding.
Now that's a collab I wasn't expecting! Haha I love Laura and her channel!!
Me too!!
We are makers and longtime fans of Laura and love her channel, laughter and resilience, too! This video you made is such a treat and we're so happy to have discovered your channel through her, thank you! 💕

Bless you for this video. Thank you.
Thank you for this very excellent video!
Love Laura & your teaching through her vid.
This video was great! It’s useful for everyone!
Thanks! I really needed this today! My resilience was seriously compromised from severe traumatic domestic violence and years of being forcibly held captive. It's a long and winding way back! I thought I'd bounce right back after I escaped him! Boy, was I wrong! I thank God there are people like you!!🙏💕❣️
Oh no I'm a survivor of DV TOO BY TWO MEN X
It takes time and that's okay..
Amazing video, thank you
This is the video I needed right now!! Thank you!!
This was such a wonderful video! Thank you for making it.
Great info and so needed.
Great video. ❤
The thing that stands out to me here is, she obviously has money to accomplish her desires
Makes a huge difference
I’m here from Laura’s channel! This is such a great video and such an important topic✨ thanks for making this!
Great video thanks for sharing
I really liked this video!! The structure and having Laura as the example was super helpful.
I absolutely love this. 🎯
Best video ever!
Thank you for these coaching along here. I am having the same issues going through a lot of troubles and I need to build that resilience and then thank you for being there
Discovered your videos by accident. Love them.
Very great video!
This is a wonderful video. Thank you so much Emma. Your videos have made me a better person and have helped me to deal with my mental health challenges with confidence.
Thank you for this! Been watching your videos to get through my bipolar symptoms and some resilience would be nice.
Thanks Emma
Thanks💜💕
Thanks a lot. These tips are very valuable actually. It's very important to know how to handle all this.
Thank you. Someone explaining how to develop resilience and guiding me on the how is so inspiring. You have made me realise how my reactions are sometimes repetitve and will not develop me.
I liked the video. She seemed a really chill lady.
I've been naturally anxious since I was a child and my Mum was super anxious. Everytime my parents had a setback they would be so stressed out, like the opposite of this video.
I'm probably even worse than my parents as I have depression too. Tend to ignore my problems and accept poor living conditions and some abuse.
I do think a better video might be following an example of someone who is really depressed and shows resilience to get better. Going from where I am to where Laura is seems like a lot of steps and it might help to see someone starting at a little lower point?
I'm commenting though as I liked the video and hoping for more
I hear you. I've been in that deep, dark place too, where instead of being able to feel inspired by those with well developed coping skills, I've felt a terrible sense of shame & alienation.
But the seeds were planted.. by being exposed to those further along with their skills, who encouraged by their example.
It was something like a light in the darkness, which I gradually grew towards.
I've been a long time growing and strengthening, but I have emerged into the light and warmth after somehow keeping going through all the hard places.
The encouragement came from those who had found their place in the sun, and often after their own struggles.
So keep on keeping on, Polly, and whoever else reads & needs some hope at this time ~ keep growing and reaching for your time in the sun✨🌼
Love and blessings to you 💚🌱🌿☀️🌴
You have helped me so much with my anxiety! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Yes!! Laura is amazing! Never thought I'd get this beautiful crossover of two of my favorite UA-camrs who talk about such different subjects (or do they?).
Hahaha. Great to see you analyze Laura
❤Thank you so much Emma🙏
Thank you for sharing this with us! I'm learning to sit with difficult emotions right now and it is both hard and helping me a lot. I'm going to try practicing /learning some of these other skills too. God bless you and keep you 🙌🏿💕🌿
I found this video helpful Emma. I really liked your analogies about building and renovating homes. I hope to buy a tiny home one day!
Congrats to Laura. Great way to live a life. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video on Resilience.. it has great messages I need... - from India.
This is such an amazing explanation of helpful approaches! I've watched all of Laura's videos about the house renovation/construction, and been baffled about how she manages to remain positive and navigate all of the issues. Now I feel like I have a how-to guide to do that myself. Thanks so much to both of you! PS. Found your channel through Laura's, and super excited to check out more of your videos!
I guess this video came up for me because I am subscribed to Laura. I enjoy her spunk!! Also my word for last year was Resilient. So your title doubly caught my eye. I really appreciate how you share Laura's perseverance and great attitude. She is a gem!
This is a great video, probably one of the best ones yet from you. Thank you. I needed this and so did my wife. We both will benefit from it.
you are the only therapy channel I watch now, you are helping people more than you know... thank you for what you do !
I’ve learnt a lot of these things from your channel! I just need to learn how to ask for help
your videos help me a lot
Loved this, Emma! My resilience has given me the ability to bounce back from intnese suffering pretty quickly all my life. I think it's genetic as well as experiential. Both my British parents lived through WW2 and they taught me to be able to keep going after setbacks by their example, when I was growing up. I am Australian, btw.
I've been wanting to build resilience for when I am overwhelmed and anxious, especially around my attachment issues. I was literally hoping to find content from you and opened UA-cam and THIS is what I see 😍
I'm a huge fan of Laura Kampf, and every week she models how to human with grace, humility, and laughter ❤️💕
I feel better just watching Laura. Thank you Emma♥️
Excellent advice! Thank you. ❤
Glad it was helpful!
I'm so impressed with these videos. Excellent, helpful information delivered with 100% authenticity, warmth and positivity. Thank you so so much
Love this video ❤, excellent approach used to explain. Perfectly and easily got the idea as you used real life examples to explain the theory...really admire the way you explain. Thank you so much 🙏, This is really helpful in life.
I was watching Laura's Lise Lotte series the other day and was just in awe of her resilience. I love her content so much.
It's both interesting and sad to read people in the comments who see this video as glib or oversimplification of a large problem. I recognise where they are coming from because I was there 6 years ago dealing with ptsd with a toolkit that was never filled as a kid. I've known people that have trauma and unsupported childhoods, yet are very much like Laura, and I always wanted to know HOW do they do it. To me it was like magic, something innate and not learned. And I was envious of them, and despondent that I could never heal my head, or move through life with such grace. Laura's life is not perfect, the reason for her tiny house is due to being homeless atm, and yet she makes it look so simple that people here are saying that she hasn't done it tough- but if you know anything about her story, that isn't true. It's one of the reasons why I admire her and her attitude and resilience makes her an inspiration of mine. I have had to learn all of the points raised in the video, it's taken years, and is still a work in progress. But if I'd had this simple list of what resilience is, my therapy would have gone a lot quicker because the steps would have made more sense. I hope that anyone who watched this video and feels it's too simple and that the skills and success Laura has can only be from a well-supported childhood, learns that it can be achieved. Best wishes to you all.
