Resilience is a skill that can be learned, and I was watching a creator who totally embodies it, Laura Kampf, she’s such a great example of resilience.
When it comes to being more resilient a lot of people probably think that being more resilient means “Just try harder” “Suck it up” “Get over it” or “Just push through”. They think that the way to be more resilient, the way to overcome obstacles is to just force yourself to be motivated and keep going even if things aren’t working. And, while grit is a great characteristic, just forcing it can’t be your only tool. If you really want to be more resilient, you’ve got to have a toolbox of skills to rely upon when it all hits the fan.
So in this video you’ll learn 6 ways to be more resilient. And I’m going to give you lots of examples of how to be resilient from Laura’s channel. Let's get better at feeling.
Resilience means to bounce back. So for example, rubber is resilient. Resilience means getting back up just one time more than getting knocked down. I think some people think mental strength comes from just being super tough, super strong. But I would disagree. Ice is strong, but it’s not resilient. Resilience is a combination of toughness and flexibility.
It’s not just trying the same thing over and over again. It’s not just trying harder. It’s not just willpower. It’s trying something differently. So let's watch some an example of a resilient person:
00:00 Resilience is a skill that can be learned
01:09 What is resilience- Resilient people have 6 characteristics:
    02:06 1. A belief that everything is Figure-out-able
05:21 2. Resilient people ask for help
07:14 3. Resilient people build skills to tolerate emotions
09:39 4. They focus on what they can control
11:27 5. Flexible thinking is a sign of resilience
    13:55 6. Laughter and resilience

The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

    1. Everything is figure-out-able
    2. Looking for help
    3. skills for tolerance, don't be ashamed of emotions, taking breaks
    4. learn to focus on what you CAN control
    5. flexible (mindset), accept failure
    6. Laugh about it if sh*t hits the fan
    You're welcome. You got this!

My biggest pet peeve is everyone always saying “seek help from a professional.” That’s like saying “go to the moon.” Unless you have $200 to spend per hour of help, or even $100 or even $50, which takes many many sessions to really build a relationship with the counsellor and work on things, then it is not accessible. I am not ashamed or hiding a need for help. There is just no way to “seek professional help.”
Anyway I do get good information online and your videos are super helpful and all of these online videos and articles are a blessing. I just wanted to say that professional help is not an option for most people

I’m stuck early on in this vid. So renovating a house you could afford to buy and alter to your liking is on par with wading through problems like war, racism, and poverty, which harm specific people on a global scale? I’m honestly not trying to be one-track minded, but the level of concerns certain people have are like a thorn in the eyeball to people with literal life and death issues to navigate- daily.

It makes a HUGE difference if you have the finances in this case plus she has ppl willing to assist her. I have resiliency in general...yet there's only so many hard hits one person can handle at one time especially if there is not a strong support system as much as I keep assisting others. Where is the Pay It Forward program? We are all supposed to be in this world together... to make it a happier and smoother place for everyone❤

Adversity is our greatest teacher, but it takes a real change in mindset to see it that way when in the midst, for me anyway. If we can distinguish minor setbacks from major ones, it's easy to get kicked to death by grasshoppers, as the Buddhists say!

Sounds like you’re in a hard spot. I am 60 with two dependent daughters. Things are tougher in many ways than when I was younger. And I get frustrated that life’s challenges never seem to stop. But I do find I have more wisdom & perspective on my side & that this helps to compensate for youthful energy. I rely a lot on dark humor just to keep laughing & try to find small ways to nurture myself every day - even a quiet moment with tea & toast & knitting or a hot shower. Cold showers give me an enormous boost as well. 😂 I want my girls to remember my example when they get to be my age - I hope it makes them smile. I hope you can find some comfort & inspiration somehow. 💗💗💗

Just like some others have said, I really needed this today. I'm 65 years old and I have cerebral palsy. The older I get the more difficult things become. I need to start working out again to strengthen all my muscles, especially my legs. I'm in a bit of a catch-22 because how do you strengthen your muscles when you feel you are too tired and weak to workout? After watching your video, I am determined to find a way to start again and build on my progress. Maybe isometric exercise is the best way for me to resume my workouts. Thanks again!

    • @cheerbeerification
      @cheerbeerification Рік тому +12

Do what you can. Only have enough energy to work out 2 minutes, then make the best of of those 2 minutes. 2 minutes is better than none and eventually you'll make it to a point where you can do more.

This also made me wonder if I am resilient too because while I used to get depressed. I don't anymore. I thought I just grew up and decided to not give a flying .... Eff anymore. I liked the video. She seemed a really chill lady.
I've been naturally anxious since I was a child and my Mum was super anxious. Everytime my parents had a setback they would be so stressed out, like the opposite of this video.
I'm probably even worse than my parents as I have depression too. Tend to ignore my problems and accept poor living conditions and some abuse.
I do think a better video might be following an example of someone who is really depressed and shows resilience to get better. Going from where I am to where Laura is seems like a lot of steps and it might help to see someone starting at a little lower point?
I'm commenting though as I liked the video and hoping for more

I hear you. I've been in that deep, dark place too, where instead of being able to feel inspired by those with well developed coping skills, I've felt a terrible sense of shame & alienation.
But the seeds were planted.. by being exposed to those further along with their skills, who encouraged by their example.
It was something like a light in the darkness, which I gradually grew towards.
I've been a long time growing and strengthening, but I have emerged into the light and warmth after somehow keeping going through all the hard places.
The encouragement came from those who had found their place in the sun, and often after their own struggles.
So keep on keeping on, Polly, and whoever else reads & needs some hope at this time ~ keep growing and reaching for your time in the sun✨🌼
Love and blessings to you 💚🌱🌿☀️🌴

This is such an amazing explanation of helpful approaches! I've watched all of Laura's videos about the house renovation/construction, and been baffled about how she manages to remain positive and navigate all of the issues. Now I feel like I have a how-to guide to do that myself. Thanks so much to both of you! PS. Found your channel through Laura's, and super excited to check out more of your videos!

I guess this video came up for me because I am subscribed to Laura. I enjoy her spunk!! Also my word for last year was Resilient. So your title doubly caught my eye. I really appreciate how you share Laura's perseverance and great attitude. She is a gem!

Loved this, Emma! My resilience has given me the ability to bounce back from intnese suffering pretty quickly all my life. I think it's genetic as well as experiential. Both my British parents lived through WW2 and they taught me to be able to keep going after setbacks by their example, when I was growing up. I am Australian, btw.

I've been wanting to build resilience for when I am overwhelmed and anxious, especially around my attachment issues. I was literally hoping to find content from you and opened UA-cam and THIS is what I see 😍

It's both interesting and sad to read people in the comments who see this video as glib or oversimplification of a large problem. I recognise where they are coming from because I was there 6 years ago dealing with ptsd with a toolkit that was never filled as a kid. I've known people that have trauma and unsupported childhoods, yet are very much like Laura, and I always wanted to know HOW do they do it. To me it was like magic, something innate and not learned. And I was envious of them, and despondent that I could never heal my head, or move through life with such grace. Laura's life is not perfect, the reason for her tiny house is due to being homeless atm, and yet she makes it look so simple that people here are saying that she hasn't done it tough- but if you know anything about her story, that isn't true. It's one of the reasons why I admire her and her attitude and resilience makes her an inspiration of mine. I have had to learn all of the points raised in the video, it's taken years, and is still a work in progress. But if I'd had this simple list of what resilience is, my therapy would have gone a lot quicker because the steps would have made more sense. I hope that anyone who watched this video and feels it's too simple and that the skills and success Laura has can only be from a well-supported childhood, learns that it can be achieved. Best wishes to you all.
