Thanks to ‪@TotalBoat‬ and ‪@bessemeter‬ for supporting my work! TotalBoat's Penetrating Epoxy was the mvp in preventing this piece from shattering, and Bessemeter's DS500 moisture meter was super useful. The 1/4 and 3/4 inch depth measurements were essential in determining how dry the final form would be. Bessemeter is offering a 10% discount for my viewers "DavidAdamsen10", so check it out! I get zero kickback from any sale of these products unless you purchase through the product links on this UA-cam page.
If you're interested in winning the ridiculous giveaway, leave a comment with the phrase noted in the video, but please do not fall for any scams. I will cover shipping cost. You must be over 18 to join the giveaway, and no purchase is necessary. The winner will be picked randomly on or after August 17, 2024. Good luck and thanks for watching!
This project was a result of me chomping at the bit to try something different. I have used this stabilizing technique on a few projects, and I wanted to try it on a larger scale. The chunk of maple I started with came from a tree that fell over 5 years ago, and it had been kicking around my shop slowly decaying, spalting, and rotting until I finally built a wood-drying kiln last year. Needless to say, this chunk of wood probably would have been rejected even as firewood given how much rot was present, but for my purposes that was what made it so enticing. The stabilization process of applying and cutting back many thin layers of epoxy ensured that the wood became more and more stable, and by adding color and pigments the grain structure absorbed and dispersed the resin in very unique "natural" ways. In the world of fine furniture, the staining effect that tinted resin has on wood is generally considered a negative. However, one of the advantages of using this "staining" technique is that it does not end up changing the original color from the entire surface of the wood. Rather, it chooses the path of least resistance, staining only the softer areas and leaving the harder areas virtually untouched. Let's call it an artificial way to enhance the natural variances in wood density.
I have a bit of a waiting list of commissions, but let me know if you want to see more projects like this. The ideas are limitless! Also, let me know what you think of that black interior. I have been wanting to try the Black 4.0 for a while, and I felt it enabled me to lean in to the rough and imperfect finish on the interior in a way that embraces the struggle... blah blah blah ok fine yes I was just trying to hide my lazya$$ tool marks and the ugly punky wood. No biggie, but I kinda like it this way.

As you so often do, amazing piece. A gentle curved shape broken by the voids, really well done. Really liked the layering of color with the epoxy to stabilize was great, gives such depth. Personally I liked the natural grain on the inside, but the flat black does a great job enhancing both the voids and keeping the eye on the outside shape.

First I didn't understand why applying a layer of color to the piece and then removing it by turning over it. Then the result began to appear, and I realized it was genius: the various successive colors that have penetrated unevenly into the wood according to its density and inclusions give it unequalled color and volume. Well done! Beautiful video again.

The keyhole and the view through it are quite mesmerizing! Someone did some great camera work.
Very interesting stabilizing method. Another turner I watch recommends using a silicone barbecue brush to avoid hairs getting stuck in epoxy.

Thank you very much! Yes, the silicone brushes work some of the time I’ve found that they aren’t as good at controlling the amount of epoxy as bristle brushes are.

It's beautiful, David. 👍 To my eye, it's evocative of a vessel from a bygone era in America's desert southwest.
