The thing I love about Sam's trains is that he can tear down Hornby and call them out when they try to pull nonsense, but doesn't hold a grudge when they put out a nice model. I've seen Sam say some really great things about Hornby. It's not his brand to just trash Hornby as some have claimed. Good on you for praising the good and discrediting the garbage, simple as that.

A bit unrelated Sam, but Broadway Limited Imports are selling their diecast Union Pacific Challengers for only £200 and their n scale big boys for £160 to sell their $30 a year collectors club! I just though you should know, as the value is incredible and a video from you may show people the prices that good models can/should be going for. Thanks as always Sam!

I got the swallow livery version and the paint job was a lot better than your one. I also got three coaches and all of them had incredibly stiff couplings. The hooks would stay raised and wouldn't come down without some help. Hornby sent me replacement couplings and they all worked well.
The sound version is incredible and worth every penny, you can even do a cold start! The Hornby app can't make a consist out of the two power cars so you have to change direction on both manually to get the lights right. They said there would be an update at some point but who knows when.
Overall this is my favourite TT120 model so far, bring out the APT, 225 and Eurostar next please.

I remember converting my old original release Class 43 HST to DCC a few years ago. Hornby sold the decoders as twin back at pretty close to the same price as a single decoder. Although only one car was driven, speakers were supplied for both cars, so sound and light was available in both cars. It use to be a faff to setup the CV's to get them to work. Hopefully the newer decoders are a bit better :)

Fun Fact, the HSTs used be classed as Diesel Electric Multi Units as seen with the either 253 or 254 number on the fron 253 being Western Region, 254 being Eastern Region, this can also be seen as the PCs are in the coach format of numbering in TOPS with the region also. However they were classed as Diesel locos and coaches when BR found it to be a pain to have them in fixed rakes instead allowing for PCs to be swapped between sets.

Is the pricing really that out of line with the other locos you already reviewed in the range? An A4 is about £170 (no lights) and a lit Pullman is about £50 which I would consider the closest to the non-power car (even though it weighs a lot less). That’s at least £220 right there

He always overlooks the marketing point of view. The price of something is cost plus profit PLUS what people will pay. I agree a driver and picked out cab detail.woukd have cost Hornby pence, but he would still have found some other reason to moan about the price. He should widen his horizons and look at what other European countries are charging, though I guess in countries like Germany they do have more disposable income, which again highlights the bit about selling price being influenced by what people are prepared to pay.

As far as value. You can expect to pay £140 for a steam A4 loco without lights but admittedly with detailed drive rods etc. Which puts the trailer car at about £50. Compare to a pullman with lights this is not far off. I think Hornby should make an HST starter pack which would be a brilliant entry in this scale, and far less fragile.

I'm old enough to remember seeing Mk1 coaches coupled to Mk3 coaches on the West Coast Mainline, and they were the same height. The HST power cars tower above those Mk1 coaches, so are the Mk3 coaches going to be as tall or are they going to be the same height as the Mk1 coaches as they should be...and in either case, which model has Hornby got their measurements wrong on?

Love a class 43, definitely one of the all time favourites, TT is an interesting scale but I don't see the point in it and I'm sticking with my 00 gauge, this was a very interesting and great review as usual keep up the amazing work! :)

The selling points are there (more space-efficient than OO yet larger than N, standardized features and quality, etc.) are there, but the question is whether it’s worth switching. And with a very minimalistic range, even the inquisitive will struggle to be motivated to make the tradeoff. Sam’sTrains video “Was TT a Mistake?” (or was that just the sentence from the thumbnail) analyses the predicaments Hornby will experience in selling the scale quite well.

    • @jonathanmillar1975
      @jonathanmillar1975 2 місяці тому +1

I have to agree that I don't really see the point of TT if it is purely on the space element. As others have said I will stick with my extensive 00 gauge layout and I make do with the space I have and compromise like lots of us in the hobby do.
I think TT is vanity project and feel they the 00 gauge range has suffered massively over the past few years because of this.
Most of the so called new modern image stock is just old Lima tooling tarted up a bit. Not saying there is anything wrong with that as I loved the Lima models back in the day. I think this the 00 gsuge old tooling locos could be a great way to get new people into the hobby if the prices are too correct. Sorry to bang on about prices again but it is an issue even though some in the hobby seem to think it is not an issue.

@@jonathanmillar1975 Here was the complete list of official reasons. I’m guessing people will beg to differ on the price, but if anyone wants to argue about any of the points being valid, it would be helpful if you watched Sam's video first so you know you're not missing any critical information (It is called "Hornby TT:120 | Was It A Mistake?" by the way).
Do more with a given space
      Less fiddly than N scale
Cheaper than 00, but similar detail
      Models in scale with track
Cohesive range (Referring the couplings, DCC compatibility, etc)
To be fair, Sam’sTrains suggested that there would need to be at least 20 engines in the range before people would start taking it seriously.

@Charmaster04 Just to clarify, I did watch Sam's video, which was thought-provoking on the subject, which, in my opinion, has resulted in both positive and negative responses from the railway modelling world.
Like anyone, you can make your own mind up on the subject. I have previously committed on Sam's channel that IMO Hornby and Bachmann have had a bit of a monopoly in 00 gauge, but in the last 5 to 10 years they have had a shock with the likes of Dapol, Accurascale, Cavalex and Revolution Trains coming onto the market. Hornby don't seem to be up for the fight, so to speak. The question I posed is, would Hornby have been better investing in the 00 gauge offering. As I have previously posted on a number of sites I have nothing against Hornby, and know that they can make brilliant models which are reliable, run well and have super detail when they want too (I am a diesel modeller Class 56 and Class 60 been good examples). Unfortunately, Cavalex have stepped up the game with their Class 56 and suspect their Class 60 will be equally as good and prices are less than the Hornby models.

I agree with you Sam that the finish should be more satin as on their latest OO scale locomotives. And yes, price is to high! A Pico TT DB ICE 3 with two cars comes at 182.5€ retail. But a single Arnold TT ( =Hornby Group ) diesel Bo-Bo loc cost 175€. Must be company price politics... Otherwise a nicely detailed and fantastic runner. Thanks for reviewing.

An equitable review again Sam. We have been wondering if H have their TT made by Arnold which are their acquired TT subsidiary. We question this because Arnold's prices seem to be far better whilst fidelity seems upping H's. A bit awkward but fidelity is difficult to compare on pictures alone. Prices however are contrasted easy peasy by looking into both's webshop. Perhaps getting some Arnold stuff for some comparison would be an idea Sam. It would be most interesting actually. Cheerio.

@@lindaoffenbach With Tillig most models work pre-order only, especially the so-called limited editions, that only get manufactured if enough pre-order is issued. About half the models that are quite generic models for the most TT-involved countries are manufactured in a way that you can either pre-order them, or you can place an order in the year after initial delivery, and a second run is going to be made 1-3 years after that. There are very few products that are available from the warehouse.

I have a 9 Car HST in Intercity livery by Hornby (7 coaches plus 2 power cars) and am absolutely delighted with it. It is a stunning model with excellent performance and wonderful appearance. I also have the sound version of the set you review here. I see that you consider this set to be expensive/overpriced. Indeed you mention this several times. Can I ask what you are comparing the price with ….given that you don’t seem to have any other manufacturer’s TT models???
As you are aware the Hornby Intercity 2 power car set with sound and 2 mk3 coaches cost £366 (From Rails). By way of comparison, my KRES Goritz 4 car express railcar with sound cost me last year £684 (price now is £741). My KRES Flying Hamburger 4 car set with sound cost £802. A single add-on coach for the Flying Hamburger cost me a further £140. Compare this with a Hornby TT120 coach at £34.10.
I have a sizeable TT collection and find the Hornby TT120 items to be really excellent value for money compared to other items on the TT market and I think your comments on value for money are misplaced here. (Note I live in France so there were no UK import duty charges on the Kres items.)

  • @switchgeer6519

near £200 for what is essentially a loco and a lit coach seems a tad ludicrous to me. it's a good loco, but I think if the second engine isn't powered it should be more around £150. either that or add a coach or two into the pack. that would've been a great deal! An inter city starter set i think would actually be a good idea for hornby. price it at 200 to 300 and give it a decent number of coaches. since it is a high speed engine some extra straights thrown in might be a good idea as well.
