Just my opinion from my experience, (been playing for years now) You're actually hindering yourself if you take shortcuts playing chords. It will benefit you better in the long run if you just keep practicing switching. Also the best way for me when I was learning was to try and play along to a song I liked, much more fun, rewarding and easy than learning something you don't know. As for strumming, that was the hardest thing to learn. I think it's more about hearing the rhythm in a song and naturally strumming to the "beat". I think I'd still struggle now if I had to read "up up down up down up up" ect. Over time you just get an instinct for it. Anyway just my thoughts! Happy learning guys :)
Strumming is the kind of thing that once you've got the hang of it you don't even think about it anymore and it just kind of happens naturally.
Yeah I personally think it's the hardest thing to teach. You can play four chords for example many different ways with the strumming and you can't teach all of them, it's what the player feels. Another thing would be finger picking which I reckon is easier than creating a strum pattern.
totally agree thanks
No problem.
Also get yourself a capo, you'll come across songs with funny looking chords that a beginner won't be able to play, the capo depending where it's placed with change the chords to something you do know. Your fingers are gonna really hurt at the start aswell, over time they'll get thick skin on them and they won't hurt anymore. Just throwing out some more tips :p
Matt, your way of teaching is absolutely wonderful! A lot of people say your showing people wrong, I say if they want to learn theory than look elsewhere. I know for someone like myself, (just starting to learn after 43 years) your method is perfect. I just want to be able to sit around a fire with friends and have FUN playing. Keep doing what you are doing, people like me and plenty of others really appreciate the time you are willing to spend helping complete strangers learn to play. God bless you!
+cmoran80 awesome! thanks so much for sharing that! I sure appreciate you!
Praise the Lord....nice to see young man singing worship song and preaching
God bless you
oh the smile that swept my face when you sang one of my favorite songs at the beginning of this video!
thanks! glad I could make a smile on anyone's face! :)
what song was it? i liked it :)
sweatshirt029 it was "the stand" by hillsong thanks! that is a great song!
I know this video is pretty old, but man I couldn't agree with you more about the strumming. The "Down Down Up Down" does sound mechanical. Strumming a tune is how you express yourself in the music. I don't concern myself with sounding like the studio recording of a song, I choose to play the music I love and I put a little of myself into the music I love.
Great videos brother, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
i totally agree! thanks for sharing!
Cheers for the video content! Excuse me for the intrusion, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you thought about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (probably on Google)? It is a great exclusive guide for mastering guitar scales minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my m8 after a lifetime of fighting got cool results with it.
This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "simple lead guitar techniques" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Ganyatty Guitar Gainify - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.
Indeed, the key is the just let it flow and not think to much about while playing. Great video, you are a great teacher! Thanks for the uploads
Justin AndersonMusic awesome Justin..i appreciate the kind feedback!
I started on ukulele 3 years ago and started guitar 2 weeks ago. EVERYTHING you said made absolute sense to me. Thanks so much for the tips. Especially, the use of the capo and alternate C chord. Man, am I having a tough go of that one. Great bible verse too.
hey Jane, the song is "The Stand" by hillsong..check it out. i did a cover/tutorial for it. Check out all my songs in alphabetical order on the "Playlist" tab on my webpage. acousticselection. com God bless!
nice tip there friend, but the reason you had a promblem going from G to C was because you were making your G chord wrong, the best way to solve that promblem is to learn the other way of making a G chord, put your ring finger on the low E string 3rd fret, then your middle finger on the A string 2nd fret, and your pinky on the high E string 3rd fret. then all you have to do is one easy move down to the C. Many guitar players play there G chord this way cause it opens up your index finger to make other G chords, like G7 ect....I took leson from a pro when i first started playing 30 years ago, I use to make my G chord the way you show hear, and he said wooo!! dont make your G chord like that cause your not able to make other G chords as I already said plus its much easer to just slide down to an C chord when you make the G chord the way i just explain, people like neil young and many others guitar players make there G chord that way. And i was glad he corected me on that. plus i was just wondering if you play your guitar at church, iam a Christian and i know a lot of guitar players play your way during worship. have a nice time playing your guitar.
john dennis I agree. Just started learning this stuff myself a little while back and discovered this "short-cut" to the G and Cadd9, but I noticed that by fingering the G the way you described, it allowed me to embellish the chords a little with putting some hammer on and offs within a chord on my A, D and G strings that would otherwise be awkward with the short-cut fingering. Took some practice, but I felt it was worth it.
One of the vids on this site recommended fingering each chord and holding it down, then letting it off and repeating numerous times. Then switch from chord to chord that way. Within a minute I was already making an easy transition from G to C and a few minutes later had my G to D and back again down pretty good.
I would highly recommend that technique to anyone struggling with chord changes and it's worth looking into some of the runs you can make from one chord to the next that makes the transition even smoother and gives it a neat country feel.
triggerguard1 well iam glad it helped, it really is the best way to make the G chord, cause you can slide right down to the C chord, and also the open F chord. This is how neil young plays and he has been my teacher for 30 years.you can play G, C and a open F that way very easy., and of course they allways sound good together. Neil plays those chords in a lot of his songs. Good luck and have fun playing that nice Taylor.
john dennis Yeah, that fingering makes it easier at first, but then you have to eventually unlearn it. I'm learning classical, and I can say that learning proper technique is hard, but it is so very rewarding.
john dennis really? I have no problem making any chord that I know so far and I make them all the very standard way you'd find in any guitar book. Never taken a lesson and play perfectly fine. I agree it makes it easier and I have learned to do changes with these methods but I can do them both ways without a struggle as you make it seem like it would be.
+john dennis I've found its good to know both and be able to easily move in and out of them depending on what position your in and the desired sound your trying to get.
The best way to make the G-C switch easier is learn to finger the G chord with your pinkey on the first string, ring finger on the 6th, and middle finger on the 5th. The chord shape is harder to learn, but it makes transitions into any other chord so much easier, and the shape can be converted into a barre chord and moved up the neck.
thanks Tyler
paradise city by guns and roses utilizes this with the exception of keeping your pinky on the high e
hey Donnie...check out my website for all the songs I've taught. acousticselection. com You can play so many songs with the 4 chords. Try songs like trading my sorrows, holiness, blessed be the name of the Lord, lord i lift your name on high
Your advice about strumming has revolutionized my guitar playing. Thank you so much & God bless!
When I started with cords I would just do my best at playing along with songs and would simply practice a song in parts until I could play it all together. I played a lot of 3 cord progression songs like CCR and when a cord change happened I’d be about a bar behind the change but would keep playing and eventually the practice turns into mussel memory
What I'd recommend for beginners would be to play G (this one 320010) using the Middle, Ring and the Little fingers instead of Index, Middle and Ring. You can go to C quickly that way and have the index finger free to go over to the next chord, C or a barre.
love it! thanks for sharing..glad I could help
Thanks, you answered several things I had been wondering about!
Its important to not be taught that easy C early on, as it is also important to go through that struggle. Don't not do a hard thing just because its difficult, the only things worth doing are difficult.
+Matthew Gilmour you gotta keep a persons confidence too.
+Acoustic Selection Yes, I understand what you're saying, but everybody goes through that difficulty: it's about training your muscle memory. And it's something that you want to get out of the way as soon as possible. If you fall back on a shortcut, you are just putting off something that sooner or later you'll have to come back to.
C was relatively easy for me, but D chord was the hardest one for me 😂
+Matt Gilmour Not to mention the C chord in that voicing (known as Cadd9) isn't exactly the perfect interchangeable C to play for a C major any time. Sometimes it's not gonna fit with what you're playing.
Like barring
Hey Matt, came by to see what you had to say. Yes, the capo is a great tool. Yes, timing is really important, strum pattern isn't that important. Last thing, that is not a C chord Matt. That is a C9. There is a difference. The C chord to G chord switch is one of the most important switches we can learn in guitar playing. It only takes my students a few weeks and they got it down! Cool video! Hope you're doing well.
thanks bud! great advice!
That C9 is used in Green Day's Good Riddance
Yep, C add 9
C Maj add9
Loved your energy, & love the timing lesson. This is great! Thank you
great! that's what I love to hear! thanks for sharing
true said , esp the G D C chord progression, C is really struggling
Hey Matt, thanks for the video! Great tips, as the C chord, is my biggest problem at the moment, next ill learn how to do the strumming.... want to learn Canadian Girls by Dean Brody. Just picked up the guitar about 2-3 days ago....
Also, don't ever worry about being yourself, let the haters be haters (on the "Holy War" as someone called it).... The Stand is an amazing song... I love Chris Tomlin's "At the Cross"(Love Ran Red)
God Bless and thanks again for the videos....You're a great teacher for us beginners...
Wow thanks so much for this!!! Your explanations are amazing. I'm glad I found this video
OMG!!!!! As a beginner you have no idea how much this short video has helped me. Wow!!! This is almost like you've opened a new world. I have a capo but I didn't want to do with it, I've seen people use only no one ever really explained it. I'll play more bluegrass, but The flatpicking and capo using were very similar. It's like I've been to school for the first time and learn something, when you say it strumming is about timing that just clicked! Thank you!!
+jrcbear awesome! Glad I can help!
That isnt a C though, it's Cmaj7. Not only is it a slight stylistic difference, but it can sound inappropriate if your piece isnt in the key of G Major
I think it's actually a C9 / Cadd9
Benjamin Thomas you are right, I assumed he was playing a 320003 G but he was actually playing a 320033 G. If you play the former and switch your bottom two fingers to a C, then you'll be left with a Maj7th rather than a 9th
*****
lol
You are correct. The chord is a Cadd9, not an alternate C and not a
Cmaj7. It is not a C9 either. Just a Cadd9, with a G note on the top.
C9 needs a flat7 note (Bb) in it. A 9th chord is just a 7th with the
the ninth note added to it, very close to a dominant 7th chord. They
substitute for each other often especially in blues, funk and jazz.
He's playing the G like this: 2-1-0-0-3-4, likewise the Cadd9 chord:
X-2-1-0-3-4.
The first tip is not a tip theyre different chords a c chord and a cadd9 have different accents and could actually both be used in the same song if you wanted to throw in a mixture
***** Good point and correct. But to beginners reading this, in most popular music, just strumming the acoustic, they are plenty close enough to be used interchangeably until you can make the change..
***** Good point and correct. But to beginners reading this, in most popular music, just strumming the acoustic, they are plenty close enough to be used interchangeably until you can make the change..
Thumbs up i like the fact that you keep it simple and straight to the point. Great video!
Thank you for the Tips. I have also watched you lessons both guitar and piano and have learned several songs. Thank you for doing this for no charge. I appreciate the time you have given to share of your gifts. I'm not a professional musician nor do I aspire to be. I just like to play and sing to my kids. And its fun. God bless you bro!
Hey man, REALLY well done. And I LOVE the positive message along with it :-) If I could add two things to your 'top 3', I would say 1) buy a guitar stand.. don't "put your guitar away in a case".. buy a stand.. so it's Always there.. waiting on you.. there when you are sad and need to play.. there when you are angry and need to strum hard.. there when you are joyful and want to sing loud... those feelings may go away in the 3 mins it takes you to go get your guitar out of it's case... and 2) which is really a subset of your two... practice your strum hand about 3x more often than you think you need to. It's the Difference. Practice a "rake", practice a "triplet".. EVERYONE can play a G,C,D.. but it's HOW you play it that makes the song :-) .. God bless and good luck
Steven Clark great tips bud! thanks for sharing those!
Steven Clark
I see a lot of beginners had problems with switching G and C but I don't remember that ever being a problem for me.
MustObeyTheRules I have that problem right now
same
wow you’re so cool
Me too
I’m still a beginner (been playing about 10 months) so I learned G and C not too too long ago and I never had an issue with switching between them. Where I have trouble is transitioning to barre chords haha. But yeah C and G come pretty smoothly, you just need a song with them to practice to so that you get used to transitioning. (I find I get bored if I just randomly switch between them) for example I’m practicing barre chords so I’m playing space oddity since it has easy barre chords and the transition isn’t too hard, but it’s still there so it challenges me and gets me to practice.
Man u explained it the way I was looking for when I'm strumming I focus to hard on whether I'm up or down and my chord changes are all messed up and the strumming goes way off course I do get frustrated and want to quit but I know it takes years to learn thank u and God bless you he seen me frustrating and sent me to you!!
Thanks Matt. My daughter and I have been on your web site and we are loving it. She's already talking about singing and playing at her church. GOD bless her. Hey my friend I'm from Goldsboro, NC.
I've just started playing guitar but I have no problem with the C,, I actually have problems with G because my ring finger doesn't bend on the e string properly so it doesn't sound clean
im not experienced much only 4 years playing, but i can say that you dont have to press strong or too firmly, just press enough to have a clean sound. And use the top of your fingers, the part right below your nails, it will hurt at the beginning but after some months you will feel nothing
Luca Brandalesi thank you!
***** well hello to u too
Good advice there. I especially know what you mean with strumming. I'd never even thought of it that way until you said here. Nowhere on the internet or anywhere else have I heard strumming put like that. After a while it just seems click, it did with me anyway, but to say that its about timing rather than ups and downs is spot on. One thing I'd put in a list like this is to build strength and dexterity into your little finger (pinky). It might sound extremely basic but, for me personally, no one ever told me that, or ways you could do it. It was kind of expected because it was never mentioned to me and I found it quite difficult when I started playing and it makes lots of stuff much easier to reach. Anyway, great video, enjoyed it.
amen! thanks for this comment. You make some great points. :) Spot on about the pinky finger too.
Acoustic Selection what can we do for the pinky?
that's great! thanks for the encouragement! I am glad I am able to be a help. Good luck on your journey!
Refreshing to hear instructions with Praise and Worship songs. Thank you, thank you!!!
I'm a super beginner. I know next to nothing except about 12 chords and I was really struggling with C. My hand just didn't seem big enough to grab it. I'm a chick so I've got smaller hands. And even though I'm playing on a 3/4 scale acoustic, I still couldn't get it. Thanks for the tip!
Oh, and nice shout out to Jesus. It's nice to see another Christian on UA-cam! It doesn't take much to get led astray in here!
If only there was an alternate to "F" ...
Yalcin Yilmaz i get you
Yalcin Yilmaz Practice is important for F. I had a lot of troubls first but like all things with guitar, you have to make the uncomfortable comfortable as you play. No shortcuts
There are 3 alternatives.. which work in most songs.
play d minor lol
Just do the XX3211 and be happy.
You probably here this all the time, but as a person you inspire me beyond, watching your videos and picking up the guitar brought me through the loss of my children, the thought of not wanting to go on, nights sat alone with alcohol and drugs if you don’t know how special you are as a person and how much you inspire others then I hope you do now Matt you are an incredible person and have helped me beyond belief. So thank you for your time and your efforts.
David
Hey Matt! God bless you bro. I'm actually just running across this video you posted years ago. Thanks for the tips. I appreciate it and understand it.
+Augustus stovall II awesome man. glad I can help out!
that taylor tho
Great video, Matt, thanks! I wish I had learned the Alternate-C as well *before* trying to learn the intro to "Me and Bobby McGee" :-/ And don't worry about the haters. I appreciate your spiritual words of encouragement with the lesson. People sometimes equate a belief in God with membership in a specific religion. Not so. I wish more people realized that we *were* created, we didn't "just happen." Thus, there must be a Creator (God). Rock on, dude.
With youtube around it is heaven for anyone wanting to learn anything, when I was a beginner it was guitar tutorial books from the shop, I am still learning as to believe your not is dumb, also learning I found playing in bands and with friends was a superb way to pick bits up, good luck
Fantastic man , I love the way you keep it really simple and still manage to teach stuff which makes a huge difference in playing (especially for beginners ). Finally the verses or the spiritual insights you share at the end are awesome as well. Keep doing more videos brother, god bless ya!
thanks so much Manoj, I sure appreciate the kind feedback. Keep praising the Lord!
oh praise the Lord a Christian music channel
sweet! thanks for reaching out!
Hail Satan
Why is it that my playing sounds terrible when I use the pick bit when I just use my fingers to strum it it sounds smooth
kee henzi Is it possible that you are using a thicker pick? I use a thinner pick if I am playing alone, and maybe a thicker pick if I am playing with my brother and want to do the rhythm part. The type/quality of your strings add a lot to the tone, as well.
how thin? like a 0.58mm?
Basically i get clearer sound out of any pick i can easily bend.
kee henzi your not alone...........
You have to practice using a pick until you get it right, it doesn't sound right when you first start using one. So yea, practice makes perfect👍👍👍
Thank you so much! The strumming tip helped out so much. I never knew it could be this easy
Thanks for the lesson and the encouragement -lovely scripture. GOD BLESS YOU.
C chord is also hard because the finger touches other strings or finger nail in the way.
Yea
God bless you Matt... thanks for your tips!! I am a beginner.... so everything helps. Praying for talent!! hahaha...
+Jo dee (JK) you can do it! thanks for the feedback!
@Jo Dee (JK)Hi! I love this video.I have found more helpful for Skyarza christian guitar star (just do a search on google?) It's really extraordinary.
+mdarifulislamrasel4 thanks for the advice!!
thanks for the encouraging words! Glad i could help!
I started learning the guitar 2 weeks ago and use the alternative C chord ... Your next two tips are priceless ALSO! Im stuggling with my strumming and rhythm for the very reasons you stated. Now I will chamge practice techniques based on your advice ... Thanks mate !
Don't bother me if the guy is a Christian,Jew or any faith, he teaches in an understandable way , which is all right with me. I think he is human so that will do.
Hows about a lesson on how and where to place the thumb when playing no one ever covers this except for barre chords, I am sure it is important. Cheers.
philip parker great idea Philip! thanks for the suggestion brother!
Acoustic Selection No problem, thanks for the reply.
"I think he is human."
You sure? Could be the aliens are actually reaching us through music :)
philip parker How bout if he was a Robot, Android, Being that stepped off a UFO, made by Dr. Frankenstein's great great great Grandson?
Just kidding I agree with you have a great day--
yes. clearly you should learn chords wrong because they are too hard. thats helpful.
haha i laughed out loud at that comment Randall. Good stuff brother!
RANDALL Flagg well this "variation" are helpful for songs whose chord progression will be mostly composed of G and Em chords ....however for songs having D and Am etc chords ...the traditional (correct) method for a C chord can be used
Rishabh BanzTM..
you are missing the point. you must learn chords corectly in order to undestand the relationship of the variations you speak of.
Rishabh BanzTM..
watch the video. he is clearly instructing people that its ok to play chords wrong if its too hard to play them correctly. im sorry but, thats not ok.
Yeah the problem is it isn't C anymore but Cadd9. This substitution isn't too bad, but now the add9 Chord doesn't sound special anymore, and substitutions are there to create tension and make it sound special.
That was great, thanks . I have only had my guitar for one week ( but I did play guitar when I was 8-11 years old so it is coming back to me quite quickly. Hearing you play and sing like that made me really excited to be able to do the same . You have a very nice voice. ( I am a professional singer but I use backing tracks, and I want to be able to perform on stage with my guitar. Thank you for your useful tips . I will get a capo and take on board the other tips. Thanks.
awesome Joanne! thanks for reaching out! best of luck on your musical journey. You'll do great!
awesome! thanks Larry!
Thank you ! And God bless you, I think it's a great thing to see a young man not afraid to show his faith in Christ.
Brad Woodson thanks Brad...God is good brother!
I honestly learned nothing from this, sorry! I'm just too new at playing to understand this.
+Tristan Smith Agree, I've been playing for years and I was thinking he's come in at a level way too high for beginners
+Keri Lovell Honestly, I think it just depends on the person and how they have learned. I already knew some of these tips because of the way I was taught and I have only been playing for a few months. I think the actually playing he did makes it seem more intimidating than it really is but if you can see past it and take the tips and run with them, they are really usefull
+William Browne Useful like black internal wangers. This dude is going to get "Chicken wing" playing like that.
+Craig Elliott like I said, I've only been playing a few months so I'm a beginner at best, if you have helpful information, you should make a video
I know this video is old; but I still want to thank you for it and the encouraging scripture as well. I'm learning to play guitar for worship and your tips are very helpful......especially the about strumming. Going out to buy a capo later. Thank you so much and God bless you for your message.
Thanks for the tips, and the message, it's nice to be able to see musicians of faith in here, especially when they're genuine and confident in how they show their faith
takes practice to get speed up you still need to learn all versions of all chords eventually , some this standards dont sound right with some songs and some of the 4 fingered chords like your c and g and f also wont sound right with some so either way you have to learn them all either way . as for strumming thats a whole other thing
thanks for the feedback.
Kevys Rc & Music how long will it take to learn all chords? How long should it take
That is not C. That is C-9th. There is a huge difference...
really ? you like missed the point completly........ the point is that its EASIER so later down the lane when you are better you can start doing more difficult things. Because if u start with something and you feel like you can play something that sounds okey you will get WAAAAY more motivation to continue practicing.
Actually, it's Cadd9, which is different to C9 which implies adding the 7th. Cadd9, on the other hand, is only one note difference to C -- the added 9th note which is a D.
C9 and Cadd9 is same, which is playing C, E and G, along with high octave D together.
Matt, thank you for sharing your love for God, and for using your God given talent as a gift of teaching to others... Your ideas are most helpful!!!!
Thank you! I have been playing on and off for a few years and two of these issues (D/C change and strumming) have been a major issue for me. Blessings to you and your family!
+Teracyn Rich thanks bud!
Your first tip; for the G to C chord thing is wrong.
That's not a C major chord, it's a Cadd9 chord.
nuberiffic true...i said it's a version of a C that's quicker for beginners...this really helped me out. Hopefully it will others.
Acoustic Selection
No dude, it just isn't.
A C major is CEG.The chord you are playing is CEGD.
That's not a different version of the chord, it's a completely different chord.
I know this is kinda nitpicky, but unfortunately, I see this with many of my students who've come from a previous teacher, they've been given all these little shortcuts, and I have to waste time getting them to unlearn all thsoe shortcuts, and then teach them the correct theory and method.
There are no shortcuts to becoming a good guitarist. Just put in a little effort and learn the correct way to do things.
I think you're actually hindering a students progress by doing something like this.
***** No, they are not similar.
That's why people specifically use them to create different sounds.
I would argue that a C major and a D major chord are more similar sounds because they are the same note intervals all shifted up a tone.
Yes, some tutorials say you can substitute one for the other, but they are just wrong.
These are two different chords with two different sounds.
nuberiffic What about just using a different fingering for the chords that he is using. Where he is using the pointer and index to hit the two top strings and the ring finger for the little e, why not just use the ring and middle finger for the top two strings and the pinky for the little e string at the bottom? I find this makes it really easy to change to the C chord from G, and I'm using the actual chords not a short-cut chord like he recommends. Is this okay, or is it a bad shortcut too? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I swear I'm not, I just don't know music theory very well ... yet :)
*****
No they don't
A Cadd9 has 4 notes (CEGD) and therefore requires at least 4 strings to play.
A C major only has 3
And there is no such chord as a Cadd7
Yes they are both C chords, but so are Cdim and Cm.If you are substituting these chords for one another then you are just doing chords wrong.
THANK YOU
YOU SAVED ME
THE C CHORD IS SO HARD
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME HOW TO PLAY IT DIFFERENTLY!!!!!
you're welcome! Glad I could help!
Rainy Bañìnjâ Lørd Wait, the C chord? Try F for the first time!
Rainy Bañìnjâ Lørd
Wait for barre chords! Seriously Bm is the best to learn. But make sure your guitar is setup nevertheless.
My beater travel guitar has never had any matinence. Need to lower action with truss rod. But I'll play Croce's "have to say I love you in a song" with the high action. Its a fight. Where's my Guild dv52?... oh yeah, safe at home.
Honestly F that I play isn't bad. Thumb on low E. Barre high e and b. Middle on g and ring on d. Thumb is optional... some what.
hahaha
Matt, I've been watching more of your video tutorials and I love them!! I've been struggling with my guitar chords as my fingers are so short and I could NEVER form the C chord! But with your help I can do the "alternate" C chord that you show. Also loved the strumming info--so true to just apply the rhythm and not be so concerned with all the up/down arrow stuff! THANK YOU so much. You are the bomb! 💜
excellent brother thank you for sharing!!!! and happy new year's to you and the family!!!!!
Sorry, learn how to play the C chord. If you keep at it for little bit, your chord changes will be seamless in no time. That chord that you are playing is not a C chord. It looks like a Cmaj7.
+O'Brien Gerald it's actually a Cadd9.
Good tips on the guitar playing, I could have gone without the Bible lesson. I like your guitar tips, but for future reference, don't mix the two.
Mitch Williamson haha you're not the first to say that brother...but this is what God has called me to do and I have my success from this channel because i do mix the 2. I probably get 50 to 1 people telling me to never stop preaching the gospel. That's what i'm going to do.
Acoustic Selection It’s your channel brother. Keep doing what you feel should be included. TY!
Jesus is fake bro if it was real my cousin would have been cured of her disease.
Good stuff. You're a wonderful human being Sir! Thank you
great tip! thanks!
Great Tips, thanks so much, please keep doing what your doing, it's helping a lot of people !!!
you're welcome Joy...glad I am able to help and I love what i do!
Thanks for the tips, played keys since youth but at 30 years picking up guitar. Great help, keep going! Greetings from the Netherlands
awesome Dutchie....glad I can help. good luck!
awesome! glad I can help! thanks for the encouraging feedback
Brilliant video! Especially your message at the end!
Francois van der Merwe thanks! glad I can help!
Nice videos buddy, I've learned a lot about keyboard and I'm looking forward to what I can learn on the guitar. And that was a nice touch on the scriptures in romans. Some people might not understand but keep doing what your doing.
Shane Wood thanks Shane
God bless & thanks for posting this video.

Matt, great video, strumming seems hard for me being rather new at guitar. I think it's about a lot of practice and feeling the music. God bless for you sharing this info.
Dude. These are some awesome videos. I bought my first guitar about 9 months ago but its been sitting there the whole time coz my very first lesson was tough. With your vids I'm inspired to try again. YOUR REFERENCES TO PRAISE AND WORSHIP------PRICELESS. God bless and keep it up.

Tinashe, may I ask you if it was a cheap (inexpensive) beginner guitar???
Did you have it professionally "set up" when you bought it?
Is the action too high?
I've only been playing for 2 years (I wasted many years on 2 junk guitars - I bought them because I thought a beginner should learn on an inexpensive guitar - in case I don't like it then I wouldn't have wasted a lot of money. However, for me the opposite was true. It turns out that what I needed was a NICE guitar. All those years I thought I stunk at guitar, but it wasn't ME - it was THE EL CHEAPO GUITARS that were holding me back - because the ACTION WAS TOO HIGH - so I wasn't able to press down easily on the strings to even form a chord - PLUS the darned CHEAP guitars would NOT TUNE properly or STAY IN TUNE.
These are the kinds of truly "beginner" tips that I wish someone had taught me when I was first starting out.
Beginner does not = buy inexpensive guitar. You need a NICE guitar with nice action that stays in tune - otherwise you might think it's you that's the problem, then get frustrated and quit playing - all because the guitar is junk.
Brian Clark I bought an inexpensive one but I had a guy from our church tag along when I went shopping coz I trusted his taste. Turns out it wasn't such a bad choice after all based on the feedback I have been getting from other people who have played it. I kinda enjoy playing it now that I discovered these tutorials. I fully intent to replace it with a much better guitar soon now that I'm getting better at playing El Cheapo. If your advice hat come a year ago and I had the cash I would definitely do things differently. I have been playing in church for the past two weeks thanks to Acoustic Selection. Yesterday I actually started a song instead of just playing accompaniment. Woo hoo!
Amen to that
I’m about a year and a half in, and have that trouble w G to C transition, but a teacher has suggested last few weeks that I use 4 finger on high e, 3 on low E, 2 on A (instead of 2, 1 on these). I’m struggling to unlearn and learn but already easy to see that transition to C chord will be much easier. Only have to move 3 and 2 fingers down the fretboard one string each. And it’s seems to make some of the other transitions easier as well. Nice playing, appreciate the strumming advice.
Great lesson. Been playing a couple of years and just now starting to use the different C chord fingering. I have also been too mechanical with the up down pick pattern. Thanks posting
you're welcome! Glad i could help
This is really great!!!
What a blessing
Thanks God and thank you

WOW! Wish I could "SEE" more of the finger action, will subscribe!
Thank You Brother!

awesome! thanks so much for the kind words of encouragement! I sure appreciate that. Have a great day!
Awesome tips . thank you man.. God bless you
thanks Anthony, i appreciate it
I liked this. Thanks. For me the number one thing I wish someone had shown me was the alternate way to form the open G chord: 4th finger (pinkie) on 1st string, 3rd fret. 3rd finger (ring) on 6th string, 3rd fret. 2nd finger (middle) on 5th string, 2nd fret. This allows you to easily move back and forth between G and C as well as G and the dreaded F chord. I took lessons for six months and my instructor never even mentioned this. I stumbled across it in a video and have been trying to master it. It's not easy, but if I had started doing it from the beginning my life would be SO much easier.
Awesome tips... I am just a budding Guitarist and these tips are really helpful. God Bless...
you're welcome Shekar...glad I could help!
