- Problems with lights on the dash? Starting problems but battery is OK or has just bee replaced? Problems with power steering? These are all signs that your main earth strap is corroded or broken.
This video will show you how to replace the strap. Very detailed explanation of how to remove the battery and tray too, so you can skip that bit if you don't need to see it.
The strap is available here for £4.00

Many thanks for this video was exactly the problem above and fixed within 15 mins. Really appreciate your time making the video. Ended up buying same product from Halford’s so not to wait for delivery and for same price!
That’s good to know they sell them in Halfords.
Great video. Plan to change this lead later and hope it solves the intermittent steering warning message and steering going stiff on my other halfs 500. Wish me luck.
Classic symptom so I reckon it will. It’s very unusual for steering motors to break.
Thank you so much! Wifeys 2010 500 1.2 got just this fault and I tried to pull the earth cable and it broke lose easy as a paper. Then all sorts of error started to show in the display so it clearly had some contact left. Changed the cable and its good as new! On the 1.2 I didn’t even had to move the ‘clutch thing’ you got. Kudos man!
How on earth did you get to the bolt without taking the slave cylinder off?
@@Love500The construction was a bit different so the cable was easier to access on the 1.2
@@bu11etman all of the ones I have done are on the 1.2
Hi Paul, the earth cable is that red colour because it is copper, that is why it goes green when oxidized. Like St Paul's Cathedral, which is copper clad.
I had hill start assist show up while driving and sporadically, “reverse gear switch low” would appear on my CANBus code scan. I made my own replacement cable. I’d also get ECUs bricking while flashing tunes.
Not common faults by any means but thanks for mentioning
Nice one Paul what a place to put a stud
Hi. That can be problem with fault “fuel cut off” and ABS light on dashboard? I could start engine when I connected one of the jump lead to minus on battery and some metal place, Additional earth.
Definitely a common issue. Stud snapped on mine too when I was replacing the battery, although I wasn't using an impact driver at all 😆 So mine was a combination of stupidity and rust
I have a Ford Ka RU8 1.2 from 2015 that have the same engine and quite similar engine bay setup.
I've often had my car go into limb mode when the engine was just at idle stopping for red light and that send the revs to 1500rpm. Had to turn off the ignition and on again to exceed the 1500rpm and now engine light, no ECS, no hill assist, no ABS came on. My simple error code reader gave me P0101 ( MAP or Mass sensor error and on a more expensive tester I also got C1221 fault.
I've ruled everything else out and cleaned the crank vent hose the vacuum hose, new air filter, spark plugs 6month old, cleaned the TB and intake with a special intake cleaner, put on a new Bosch MAP sensor. NOTHING helped. But changing the braided ground cable to a new round ground wire for €5 (similar to the one in your link) and cleaned off the ground terminals did the job. THANK YOU.
Wow that was a lot of things before you finally found it was just a simple earth strap. Good news you sorted it.
@@Love500 And thank you for putting up this video. It's actually more easy in a Ford as you dont have to remove the slave cylinder.
snapped pmsl that was funny Paul lol
Hi. I have ordered one of those cables. I believe mine was not great the last time I changed the clutch.
However I seem to have compression issues and all of a sudden it takes an age to start. I have seen oil pressure, or as I have an odd coolant leak that is nowhere to be seen I'm wondering if that's a Head gasket.
It's a 0.9 twinair.
I don’t have much experience with the twin air I’m afraid. Always worth changing the cable anyway. If you think you may have a blown gasket get yourself a sniff test on eBay.
Honestly i build my own earth strap with heavy guage insulated cable and ring terminals going from the battery to the chassi and gearbox
I followed this. BUT, when I removed the clutch cylinder bolts, it rapidly and unexpectedly sprang backwards under hydraulic pressure and although the cylinder didn't come all the way out at either end on, reassembly I find the clutch pedal now has no pressure and I can't engage any gears. I expect I've just got to take it apart again and bleed the clutch. So, when you do this, tie the slave cylinder lengthways to the gearbox arm to prevent it springing back BEFORE fully removing the retaining bolts.
This shouldn’t happen and normally the side of the car acts as a barrier to stop it moving. I imagine you’ve got air in it. Easy to bleed. Just need to get someone on the pedal whilst you do it.
Hi Paul, thanks for the link to a recommended seller. Do you have a preferred supplier / brand for rear shocks? Need to replace some soon and there's too much choice!
To be honest, no. They seem to be consumables on these cars so I just buy mid range ones.
@@Love500 OK, thought it would be worth an ask. I’ll do likewise.
The cable coming up from underneath to the bolt, rather than down to the fixing bolt may be part of the corrosion issue, any water will drip down into the cable, if the cable comes from above to the bolt water cannot go into the cable
Good point
Hi. Just thought I would get back to this issue since the fault came back after a month of driving.
I tried to clean up the contact point even more from rust etc but faulty again after a week.
Then the car was checked for vacuum leaks, manifold gasket leaks etc etc at the garage. No issues but they told me that the Ford Ka 1.2 2008-2016 had some bulletins and could result in error codes p0101, p0106, c1221. My 2015 Ford Ka 1.2 has p0101 and c1221.
Engine light on, ABS/ESP light, Hill assist, start/stop and limp mode.
Cause could be a faulty EVAP placed under the TB connected to a blue hose.
Have you ever changed a EVAP so that you could give me some pointers?
I haven’t changed one I’m afraid but issues like this could be so many things. If you haven’t seen my Loopy Harold series, have a look when you get a chance. I changed almost everything. After months of trying I gave up and sold it. The buyer put a new/used engine in and all was good. Those p codes don’t really mean anything to me I’m afraid. Multiecuscan will give you p codes but also a plain explanation and point to a component that might be at fault. Not so much when it comes to the engine. It’s strange that it went away for a month and then came back. Keep us updated.
@@Love500 I've ordered a new EVAP from Ford (part nr. 1562726) and will do the install next week. Fingers crossed AGAIN 😝
If you would have cleaned the stud that the 13mm nut was on that holds the battery strap down with a wire brush then it may not have snapped the stub due to the fact that you were trying to move the nut over all the rust on the stud!
You may be right, however trying to film and do it one handed at the same time I didn’t give it a thought. Just shows how easy they snap.
Hi - do you know if it's the same process/part for the panda?
I don’t know for certain but they are basically the same so I would imagine so.
Hi great video , i have a grande punto 1.4 tjet abarth , i am having some electronic problems at starting the car, asr disconected , hill holder not available , ans sometimes check steering .
I got the (c0051 and c1002 steering errors angle sensor) .
But the steering never felt bad or heavy and only happens at trying to start the car( new battery) could be a ground issue? Or no chance?
Best regards
Yes, most likely especially as it’s intermittent. I’ve recently been advised rather than replacing it.just run an additional one terminating on one of the slave cylinder bolts. For £4 it’s worth trying.
@@Love500 yes i think it might be , it happened on turn the car in the check up and only if i restarted it becames ok , now gives the warning when check up but became ok when the car turns on.. also had flickering headlights once.
What aditional ground do you recomend?
@@luiscaldeira7458 get the one I've linked in the description and put it between the normal earth point on the chassis rail and one of the bolts for the clutch slave cylinder.
Hi Paul, this video was so useful! I have a few questions, as having some issues with warning lights flashing on right indicator (which i understand is a common fault from another one of your videos) but I also believe it could be to do with the blue and me module. Appreciate any advice as most mechanics just hate my 500L so arent much help!
Only flashing mileage is the blue and me unit. The dim and flashing lights usually when indicating right is a fault in the Speedo.
Hi Paul, please I’ve got 2009 fiat 500 1.2 and it keeps coming up with downstream sensor bank 1 sensor 2 issues triggering the engine management light. I’ve so far put 4 sensors but the light keeps coming back. The error code is a P0136-1E and indicates issue with ground voltage which I don’t understand. Please have you come across an issue like this and any idea what might be causing the light to keep coming back. Thanks
When you say you’ve replaced sensors are you talking about the lambda sensors? Anything to do with ground and it’s time to change your earth strap.
Hi Paul, great videos. Replaced my horrible green earth strap but still no electrics… totally dead. Was working but doing weird things like no windscreen washer or rear hatch working. Brand new battery, any ideas? Or trip to auto electrician? Thanks!
Assuming your hatch wiring has been checked and is ok, then it sounds like something more serious such as the BCM. Broken hatch wiring can cause all sorts of problems and has been known to fry the BCM with wires touching each other.
Hey Paul do you have any social media account where I can send you a video on my problem with my abarth. And may check what might it be?
Instagram, love500salvage
I just added you Paul thanks
The earth strap you recommend didnt fit my 2019 Tourismo MTA. It a 15mm bolt at gearbox end and 13mm on the chassis. I bought the recommend lead and has to drill one end out.
Also. This didn’t fix the fault. Just saying. Still get the battery light up after a short drive and loss of power steering. Battery is charging at tick over at 14.4v.
Also. It’s a hard job. ECU etc has to come off and the gearbox end is on the side. I managed to crack it off from the top and remove it completely through the wheel arch. I’ve photos if you want them
I guess it’s different on the auto then. I imagine it’s your alternator then.
Even though it’s charging fine and no battery drain?
Just followed this video changed earth cable and battery also and still wont start. No click no sound when trying to turn over and all lights and electrics work any ideas?
Assuming your battery is good, I think the next thing to check is the starter motor.
they use braided cable so they're more flexible
And break.
Hi ya paul,
Just a quick question, where are you based mate ? Which area ? I could do with the blue and me changing on our abarth 2014
I don’t change them I only repair them. You would have to take it out and send it to me.
@@Love500 oh my mistake mate, I thought I watched a video of your where you changed a blue and me on a 500 for somebody on your channel ?
@@joobie1000 yeah, that was my neighbour.
@@Love500 OK mate no worries I just thought I could have driven to you and paid you to do the job, as I'm not great at mechanical repairs and I don't have the patience either 😁
Hi Paul I need advice / help .
Stop start has stop working with the message stop start unavailable, anti stall management isn’t working when engaging 1st or reverse. Any ideas ?
I replace with brand new Battery, also plugged ob2 and no codes , any ideas at all on as I’m stumped by this .
Many thanks. 👍🏼
I have no idea what any stall management is, never heard of it but stop start unavailable is sometimes caused by the brake light switch. Normally does show up a code. What are you using to diagnose? I'm assuming not MultiECUScan?
@@Love500 thanks for the quick reply , anti stall is when you engage 1st or reverse, the revs slightly rise to around 1.000 rpm without touching the accelerator pedal
I’m using Streetwize OBDII Fault Code Reader I’m sure if it’s multiECUscan
@@paulb9630 generic obd readers aren’t much good to be honest. Multiecuscan is 50 euros and can be downloaded at www.multiecuscan.net. You need a laptop and a cheap elm adapter and cables from eBay. It’s near dealer capability.
@@Love500 thanks for that info will look at getting the adapter and cables and can get the software downloaded on my laptop , hopefully can get to the bottom of this as no EML light is on just stop start light and yellow warning triangle .
I went to Euro car parts and picked up a brake switch, and it turns out that was the fault, I just wanted to update in case anyone else has this issue, thanks again, Paul for your help, you help me in the past as well about things from the Fiat 500, keep posting keep up the good work. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
i keep having my "hill start unavailable" code popping up on my 2014 500 turbo. i heard this could be the issue.
Possibly, but could be your brake switch too. Needs diagnostics really.
Great Paul, I’m doing it on my Abarth tomorrow and doing the brake light switch too. Do you offer a service to do a proxy align as I’m disconnecting my blue and me?
Not as such but if you drive here I’ll do it for you for free.
Just done the earth cable it looked ok but replaced it anyway but steering fault is there, I’ve replaced the rack and subframe and front suspension after an accident, yet to do the brake light switch but doubt that will cure it
@@leebod7558 I don’t think the brake light switch will have any bearing on steering problems. Very rare for them to go. Battery ok I assume?
@@Love500 yeah brand new battery, although I hit a lump of concrete in the road which snapped the track rod end and lower arm hence replacing the rack and subframe
I’m doing the brake switch as it says hill hold abs and esp unavailable, also replaced the abs sensors, probably gonna have to replace the column
2015 Fiat 500 1.2 hill hold and esp unavailable coming on dash. Brake like switch changed and only one fault code stored of bcm open circuit. Could it be this earth cable?
Often voltage related so possible. For a £4 cable it’s certainly worth a try.
Tried it mate didn’t work. Any other ideas?
@@mazda6sakata worth a try. What’s the open circuit showing in?
Says BCM open circuit. Soon as I go to drive off hill hold / esp unavailable comes on dashboard.
@@mazda6sakata must be a BCM fault then I imagine. Have you checked relays?
Is this the same for punto as well?
I don't know, I've never had a Punto. If its the same engine then yes, if its a different engine the process will be the same but things may be in a different place. For example, on the 1.4 fiat, the Slave cylinder is within the gearbox so the earth strap goes elsewhere.
@@Love500 it’s 1.2, had issue before and RAC just sprayed some WD40 on the ends and it started fine after now few months on and same issue, believe the earthing cable is much longer and reaches behind engine mount so will have to disconnect everything and follow the cables round . Thanks though
@@Aaa-rj9zc the cables I buy are 300mm long so have to loop round. You can get them in various lengths but you don’t have to terminate it on the same place. Any external bolt on the gearbox would be fine.
