Love 500 - Fiat 500 Basics - Checking your oil and coolant in your Fiat 500.

  • I often get asked how to do basic things so this is the first in the series of Fiat 500 Basics In this video we show you how to check your oil and coolant levels. How to top them up and how to bleed the air out of the coolant.
    Keep your fingers away from the radiator fan if the engine is running and never run the engine with the oil cap off or the dipstick out.
    Be careful. If you're not confident in doing these tasks, leave it to those that are. Safety first.

    you can use water for a few days when you want to wash the cooling system. Fill with water, drain, fill it again, drain, until the water comes out clean. You can see that the cooling system is dirty when the heater core gets clogged and there is no warm air to the passenger compartment.

    Hi there thank you so much for this. Today, I had an emergency when the car told me I needed to stop right now. Coolant levels. I had to put water in as ( emergency) didn’t know it should have been antifreeze coolant as I’ve now learned. Tomorrow I will check the levels . Can I put red/pink coolant in on top ?

    • @Love500
      @Love500  2 місяці тому

      Yes, red/pink is the correct one to use. Assume you have a leak if your engine got hot. Stick some cardboard underneath and run up to temperature and see if you can see it dripping. Cars do use it up slowly if no leaks so if you haven’t checked it for some time it may have just disappeared. Most likely a leak though.

    • @Love500
      @Love500  2 роки тому +1

      Brands are ok to mix but it needs to be the same type of coolant. Pink/red coolant is OAT - Organic Acid Technology. You need to top up with the same.

  • @mr.y.mysterious.video1
    @mr.y.mysterious.video1 8 місяців тому +1

    Good video. Will coolant fall naturally or does it mean you have a leak? Last few days when starting my 500 ive heard a trickling sound, people say thats air in the coolant and i probably have a leak. For the first time today i had a turn off engine now temp warning. Upon looking in the coolant pipe it doesnt look too low so im thinking does it just need topping up?

    • @Love500
      @Love500  8 місяців тому

      It does disappear a bit over time but if you're getting the trickling noise then there is definitely air in the system. The noise you can hear is the air and water pushing around the heater matrix. I would take the bleed screw out of the hose to the right of the airbag as you're looking at the car while the engine is running and top up the coolant until coolant comes out of the bleed hole, then replace the screw. Also give it some revs with the cap off which will help to push it round. If it doesn't look low in the tank, then it must just be air. It could also be a faulty thermostat too not opening properly.

    • @Love500

      No, water will corrode your radiator. Only use coolant/antifreeze. Either a pre mixed one or add water to a concentrated one. There’s a drain plug at the bottom of the left hand side rear of rad. Black bit you turn. When it starts to come out slowly release the cap to adjust the flow.

      Best way is to leave the cap off, run the engine, remove the bleed screw on the rear top above thermostat and fill until coolant comes out of the bleed hole. Replace the bleed screw and give some revs to push it round. Leave the rad cap off for a while you will see the bubbles rising to the top.

Quick question before I start “tearing down” - I have a 2012 “Baby Blue” 1.4 500C and am about to embark on an oil change. From everything I’ve checked on the Internet, the Oil Filter is to the front left of the block, a paper filter, and the filter housing accessible on a socket extension bar through the opening in the offside headlamp mounting frame - unless I’m going blind, there is no filter housing down there, all I can see is the exhaust heat shield - any hints before I end up pulling the entire front of the car off, and what’s left of my hair with it??!!

    My 2014 retro fiat 500 engine light is on. The dealer turned it off, charged me $254.00 It came back on again in two days. My coolant is from 2014. Should I purge all the coolant out and put new coolant in it? I am going to ask for a new thermostat, from a different mechanic then the dealer. The outside temperature gauge registers to be 37 C when outside is actually 18 C. Is that a separate thermostat? The triangle indicator also has been on for some time and stayed on even after the oil change. When I brought my car to the dealer, he said it needed the oil changed (it just was), but he could not turn it off. How do I reset the indicator? Until recently, everything worked well in my fiat, now three indicators are faulty and the dealer did not fix them. I would like these fixed, but need help to know what to ask for.

    • @Love500
      @Love500  2 роки тому +1

      The US and Australian cars are somewhat different from the European ones so I can only go by that. The temperature sensor for outside temperature is in the passenger door mirror (left hand in the UK). At the bottom of the mirror housing there’s a ‘nipple” which is the sensor. That is most likely what’s causing g the error. Turning a light off and not fixing whatever is causing it to come on in the first place is pointless. I would like to think they did actually do something, not just turn the light off. I would go back to them and say it’s come back on. The triangle is a generic warning light and will come on along with any fault. It could be something as simple as a blown bulb. Coolant has a life expectancy of around five years so it’s probably worth draining and renewing. I think you need to get some proper diagnostics to see exactly what is putting the lights on.

      Water will freeze and burst your radiator and potentially ruin your engine. You should only ever put water in as a temporary top up. Get pink coolant and drain all the water out and fill with coolant. You have most likely got air in it which is stopping the water getting to the heater matrix.

We were practicing doing parking today and clutch control and a warning light for high temperature coolant came up. 5 mins later the warning light had gone after switching the car off. Possibly, or the temperature sensor in the thermostat could be faulty or the thermostat stuck. They do tend to go but luckily are cheap and easy to replace. Shine a torch to the right hand side of the beige plastic pipe on the radiator and you should be able to see the pink coolant level if you then look from the left hand side. No need to take the cap off. If it's low, or you can't see it, when it's cooled down top it up, but check for leaks too under the car when it's up to temperature.

    • @Love500

      Sounds like someone’s overfilled the coolant. Check the level, shouldn’t be above the max as needs to allow for expansion. The triangle will be related to the warning.

    • @Love500
      @Love500  2 роки тому

      @@najhuet2294 well that’s odd. Maybe there’s air in it. Do you get a rushing sound from behind the passenger side dash when driving? Top it up and run it with the cap off for a while to vent any air. Obviously don’t drive it with the cap off. When filling remove the bleed screw on the pipe to the right of the airbox. Top up until fluid comes out of the hole then refit bleed screw. Do this while the engine is running. Also check the oil level.

    Hi Paul, think you need to rethink this video maybe with Loopy Harold ? First use checks should be done cold and on a level surface not on a sloped drive
    Yes we can see the oil level and it clearly shows its overfilled by the reflection . I think to demonstrate how to put oil in a an engine that needs a top up should be fully shown with small jug and funnel just to show how quick the level can rise by " just adding 1/2 litre as you mention" and show it on a old black oil ... I thought this engine was 5W-30 SAE oil grade ?
    had to stop watching the video to comment .......
    Basic under bonnet visual level checks also should include clutch and brake cylinder reservoirs and washer level fluid whist your in there then add more detail if top up required
    Oil leak ? sump damage / porous / loose oil filter ? etc. Coolant poorly sealing rotten clip ? then show how to bleed it ? Brake fluid low ... worn brake pads ? damp brake cylinders
    Been to to many call outs when a customers oil light had started flashing and they called in to the nearest petrol station and put the full bottle of oil in to top it up wether it be 1litre or 5 litres then started them up and paid the price of a damaged run on engine / caught fire and once took the garage forecourt with it as you could not see or breathe with the dense smoke to push the car away into a safe place ... too late

      I appreciate what you’re saying and I forgot to say flat and level ground however I’ve had many people with no oil whatsoever and also those with no coolant. This video is just about oil and coolant not a full service 😀. This isn’t a video to diagnose an oil leak this is for those people who only ever put petrol in their car and then wonder why the engine temperature is running hot.
