Tbh it's sitting really well if you think about it. Magic, Pokémon and YGO being on top 3 is basically given. One piece has this SUPER HUGE Fanbase thanks to the Anime/Manga. Lorcana has all the old geezer hype going around thanks to the Disney IP. So Digimon being above CG like Flesh and Blood is kinda amazing. EDIT: the price and artwork of OP is better? Dafuq u talking about? 😂 Artwork of digimon is FAR better. Most of OP are Anime Screenshots. And the pricing?? The decks are crazy expensive.
Most of the OP artwork is original. It being bad anime screenshots was a problem in the first few sets but that isn't a thing anymore. And $100 - $225 for top meta decks is quite reasonable across the TCG space. Pokemon is really the only Big game at the moment that's cheaper.
@@aidanklobuchar1798 I agree with you that price is extremely reasonable since Digimon is right there for most meta decks. People still acting like you can play anything other then kitchen table games for less then $100 just shows they dont play the game.
My GF doesnt play but only wants me to get OP cards cuz she thinks they look the best. Also hates that all digimon have -mon in the name. Gets repetitive and confusing lol I think digimon has some of the best art so I will still buy a pack here and there :P but I haven't seen any interest around me so I've ended up getting into OP only. Pokemon just for the occasional hit
This year's EU finals was in Bandai Card Fest and we had 5 events running for all card games. OP was 1st obv but DGM was 2nd at 768 players cap and sold out, the rest didn't fill and some had laughable numbers. At first the cap for Digimon was 512 and sold out very quickly, so Bandai actually increased it and for good reason. This makes me very optimistic when it comes to Digimon at least in EU.
Digimon being 6 when the top 5 contenders are basically all of the largest franchises/brands of all time is kinda an achievement of itself. Digimon beating out Star Wars and DBZ is not something I ever expected to see, even if one of those card games is brand new and the other is winding down. Since Bandai doesnt even bother to market digimon stuff half the time, I'm honestly surprised its even in the top 10. If Bandai takes a page out of Yu-Gi-Oh's playbook and does more reprints and slows down how many main sets the make, it will probably encourage a healthier game and market situation.
Another thing to keep in mind is how underprinted/underallocated digimon product was this year (assumably because their printing capacity was being used to print UA and Gundam). You still cant get ahold of BT16 or EX06 at Msrp. Would Digimon have been higher up if they were printed in higher? Also that thing you mentioned about collectors and UA applies to the players too. My understanding is that decks can only be from a single IP, so if a set (which are IP exclusive) isn’t meta relevant, the competitive players have no incentive to buy it., so more product won’t necessarily equate to more sales. UA is a weird one. I think TCGs as a whole are going to dip in 2025 onward in the US at least because the current political climate leads me to think there will be an economic downturn (not getting into it any more than that). Bandai will probably get hit the worst because they are already canabalizing their customers across all these IP.
One potential point on the data- our Digi group buys from the LGS and never from TCGPlayer. They’re cheaper and ready faster at the LGS. We even pre-order often. Without a lot of new players, I think a lot of us are in a groove on where we go to get our stuff.
Same here, I tend to buy everything from my LGS because I get along with the owner there and well, it's where I can play the game. I always prioritize buying singles there.
Lorcana being in top 5 instead of Digimon is crazy to me, maybe is a thing of the Us but here in Latam is hard to find people that play it or even finding new product of Lorcana in stores besides some older starter decks. I think what happened is Digimon is getting expensive in both markets making people back out from it beyond other problems the comunity have mentioned. One piece I am not surprised is that high since Bandai have been feeding it and reprinting to hell n back making some comptetitive decks easier to build. Vanguard I am surprised cause here in Latam theres no scene at all and in Us from what I asked there's barely any players. I am eager to see what happens to Gundam cause that's a big franchise and Bandai loves it
No way does OP have better art with all the screen shots they use on their cards lol. Honestly, as long as Digimon keeps 4th-7th place, I'm not feeling too worried about the games health.
I do think the data is really skewed away from sealed for Digimon on TCGPlayer. From everything I've seen travelling across the U.S., most Digimon product sells out via LGSes, and the way Bandai does print-less-than-demand philosophy for Digimon really minimizes stock going online. Digimon is 6th based almost exclusively on single sales and that's a very good thing as a stabilizer for the game's position. Really, TCGPlayer is a last resort for businesses because they take such a significant cut from sales, and Digimon players are instead using their money to support their locals and buy singles from other players. Digimon players spend a lot on singles and that shows we have a solid playerbase that are competing with brand-new games on raw purchasing power.
@moxmoonstone That's a cool way to look at it. I think that's a good point too. Just with how it was, like how did they have any sealed to sell haha? Also I feel like the frentic pace of 2024 releases for Global Release might have discouraged some people that might come back in April?
Yea like honestly being #6 is insane. MTG, Pokemon, YGO will never lose their top 3 spots. OP 1) has a bigger fanbase than Digimon and 2) took SOME players away from Digimon. And Lorcana is Disney, Digimon loses to the Mouse everytime. So being at 6 is crazy. I feel like we'll probably drop to 7 once Gundamn releases, similar to how OP did us, but hey, we're still on the list and thats enough for me 😊
I am curious to see what happens to Bandai games now that they are syncing the worldwide releases. It could either make or break the Digimon TCG. Lorcana will live for a long time with the adult Disneyers. OP will be interesting once the show and Manga actually end and Gundam is an unknown.
I started this year and needless to say It's been fun but frustrating. I was never into the TCG scene when I first got into yugioh and learned about the competive side of it. I loved digimon so learning to play a new game and card art was enough to convince me to take the plunge. It has been a major pain to get players if you missed boxes or came in late. Sure I won't compete every sets nor does my locals scene warrent it. I'm just really disappointed with the availability especially after it being advertised to me as being the cheapest and easy to get intoTCG.
This list is like Dead Dove: Do Not Eat. As in, "I don't know what I expected". Like it's kind of obvious. I love Digimon, but I don't think it'd beat any of those. But just comparison is the enemy of good. What's wrong with enjoying the game as it is? Also, at this point, I kinda I just want to see the other Bandai games succeed too. Then maybe Bandai will invest more in their card game division. Gundam looks really neat. TBH, if Bandai was gonna make another TCG, that property deserved it. I don't even know if they could even do another game after this unless they separated Digimon into two games like Dragon Ball. So maybe how they run the games will stabilize? Just I feel like ending 2024 on an optimistic note is for the best. (Also ew, show CSVs in Excel or an equivalent product for ease of viewing.)
I play star wars as well as OP and digi but I have to say, I feel the same amazing love and enjoyment playing SWs. And I love how different the gameplay is
I think number 6 isn't that bad, good to see that the game is still thriving. I think what Digimon is missing is maybe a new anime that could bring new players. if they turned Liberators into an anime That would be a great way to start. Personally I think we will be setting at 6 for a long time since the top 5 might never change with how popular they all are. Also I love you Mario. That is all
I am really surprised that it is sitting at #6. I just got into Digimon TCG 2 months ago. ( Though I had played the OG wayyyy back in 97). As a long time magic player I see a lot of struggles this game has. Most stemming from just confusion. Set names basically being ignored and going by BT#, a lot of sets feeling more stand alone then building off each other, the multiple cards of the same name making it hard to know what people have played just by then stating what they have played. The big one being trying to get anyone into it if they are not already a Digimon fan and then not releasing more Digimon content to help with that. All that being said I really enjoy the game and think it has a great play style but fear it will not stay around.
I love the Digimon Card Game, my only issue is I can't get out and play it much, and Bandai gives no incentive for IRL events, or even bothers to do many IRL events. Bandai always feels like they know Digimon can do better, but the marketing investment from their end is terrible. It just consistently feels like Bandai is shooting themselves in the foot with the franchise as a whole. We need more fun, gimmicky products that are priced like the average TCG and not some premium product. Most importantly: We need it in big box stores! Digimon also has so much more media to it that they can touch for the TCG but for some reason ignore it. They need to operate under the idea that Digimon is a Multi-Media franchise, not just an anime franchise.
Wait for the hype of the new games to turn off. Also, lets wait for the global Digimon release :D. Magic, pokemon, and YuGiOh are released more 20 years ago so I'm not suprised. We suffered a lot financially :P when digimon started to release new boxes every 3-4 weeks. I believe digimon will do better soon. It is so good in terms of gameplay and mechanics.
@noahdragoon1855 As someone who got burned out on card games playing Vanguard during early V format, I feel ya. I thought it killed my love for card games as someone starting out. But I do still have a little nostalgia for it haha.
Digimon is on managed decline. Take that as you will. I watched the South Jersey scene go from a healthy 20+ during bt12-14 at multiple locals to struggling to launch tournaments today. What they revealed as bt20 gives me zero hope in thinking Bandai has any idea of what the problem is on a design level. The game is no longer Digimon as it once was.
Sadly that seems to be Bandai's approach to digimon products in general. Theyve created a few mobile games they honestly could have kept running forever, but they ended up phasing them out despite there being people who still wanted to play those games.
